Boss woman moves! When i was growing up my mom taught me a lot of handy work and said it would be good for me to know just in case. Worked out because my husband isint handy at all lol. Im trying to learn more as we are buying our first home a fixer upper soon and want to do some of the work myself.
Thanks for making this video, because you made this project look so easy. I've been wanting to remove our carpet from the stairs, and was trying to find an easy way of doing so. You've done a great job.
So good. I have very similar carpeted stairs and I hate them. This video has given me the courage to finally get rid of them. This just came out so nice.
Wow!! Amazing job! I'm a finish carpenter for a living a very impressed with what I see here! I like the bead board rips for your riser pieces...nice idea! Might have to steal that idea from ya ;)

Did this on my upper hall and stairwell for the same frustrating reasons this woman did. But I had the addition of two sets of paws living in my 60s trilevel. Because of age the wood beneath the carpet was a nice oak in very good shape. A couple of stair treads had dark water stains on them but I removed that with wood bleach, sanded everything well, cleaned the dust well, then stained, then sealed with poly (not water based stuff). The hallway floor was a bit larger so I rent a floor sander. I rented over a holiday weekend so I got an extra day because I couldn't return because of the holiday. For the stairs leading down to the bottom level the wood was in good shape but it was basic builder poplar wood and loaded with rusted staples, carpet fibers, and nails. I did not replace this because I was doing a budget reno. It took a weekend to get rid of that stuff and then I sanded smooth. For any noticeable holes I filledwith wood putty. I used floor paint on the tread and proceeded like this lady did. The cove molding was essential as there were slight gaps between tread & riser. So yes I agree with others what you find under that carpet could be a surprise. I was very lucky but houses from the 80s yep manufactured would is most likely. I steered clear of homes built 1980s plus specifically for this reason as I knew I was going to do updates and want to put as little $$ into my projects as I could. That was the best advice I ever received from an uncle who flipped houses before it was a "thing." Regarding slippery? Yep, I agree the refinished stair treads can be slippery & had the bruises on my tuchas to prove it. When I planned this project I'd considered using something in poly to increase traction but ultimately decided not to do it. But as my pups got older they had a hard time navigating the stairs. My solution was to use washable stair treads with a backing that keeps them in place (improvementscatalog.com). Pups can navigate stairs now and I've not slipped on stairs taking laundry down since I put down treads. One thing I've learned with projects like this is to pick my tools wisely. Get the best quality you can afford but make sure the weight and size is a good fit & weight for your hand. Oversized tools could lead to fatigue or possible injury. FWIW I did this as a 45 year old 5'8" woman who was routinely working with a personal trainer so I had a bit of upper body strength. But dragging a floor sander up and down a flight of stairs was no easy task. Also sanding those stairs took some time. Last wear personal protective equipment especially for demo and sanding. You do not want to get this stuff in your lungs (especially if paint could be lead-based).
I would suggest investing in quarter inch oak plywood for the treads and solid oak strips for the bullnose. It’ll cost a little more but you’ll have stairs that will be much more durable because oak is hardwood and pine is really soft so it will dent and get marks in it very easily.
The REAL budget and amount of work will completely depend on what's under the carpet! If your house is over 20 yrs old, chances are you will have treads that need to be completely replaced. You may also uncover a MESS left by the builder when they were messy with applying paint, ceiling texture, etc. Just don't expect this under EVERY carpet! I am a bigtime DIYER and we ended up outsourcing this, spent $1000 to have the stairs completely rebuilt. So fair warning to those ...you may get lucky but be ready!
honeybrowne24 I’m so scared to rip up my carpet. I live in Phoenix and my house was built in the 70’s. I’ve got Spanish tile on the main floor of the house but the previous owners installed carpet. I think they installed it within the last 10 years, but I’m terrified to find out what’s under it lol. One thing I do appreciate about my house is that it’s because it’s older the house is actually made of wood. All the newer houses in Phoenix are stucco 😖
honeybrowne24 My original stairs were built out of 2 x 12s ... I had all the new treads and risers cut, stained and ready to install .. But ripping out the old stairs was at least 5 times harder than I anticipated.. they were nailed on each side thru the stringers with five 3 inch threaded nails glued on every single seam with construction adhesive.. holy shit
there are tread covers made of prefinished oak to go right over the nasty plywood stairs, you can also get the prefinished risers, or DIY some thin plywood painted or stained, like she used the beadboard here, which I think is super cute. Should be way cheaper than a tear out and rebuild
Thank you so much for this video! The most straight forward video I’ve seen on TH-cam. I was going to paint my risers white until I seen your video of the bead boards and it was so much easier. Thanks!!
You did a great job. Let that person who said they would have put sand on the stairs, then you go over there and redo the stairs. Good grief, can't we just give the woman credit for tackling a job that could have cost $1,000 if done by a contractor.
Must be nice to have a builder actually use real wood’ round here asshats cheaped out like crazy all osb stairs that sag and creak they saved themselves a lot of money’ these days wood may be. Healer than osb 😂
Very nicely done and you inspired me. Removing carpet was easy. Yet, after spending 4 hours stripping, I did more research. Another video showed how waiting on stain to try properly can take days so now I'm thinking about just purchasing pre-finished tread caps.
Hi! I was searching for DIY makeover videos for my stairs and your video was the first one I clicked on. After watching your video, I don't need to look any further. This was just what I needed. You did an AMAZING job! Thanks for sharing!
Great job Madame. Wish my stairs were like yours. I have plywood with wide gaps like someone else commented about. Haven't decided what to do yet. Anyone have some cheap suggestions?
I did pretty much the same thing to my stairs last year except my stairs underneath aren't pretty so I sanded and painted down the sides and rises and put 1/2 carpet tile on each tread. Cost overall £100 for two fights, inc. paint. Job done.
Stairs looked great.. quick question. even though the spacing on the landing gives a nice dimension wont it be hard to keep dirst and sand out of each crack? a vacuum wont get everything.will it?
Well done! Stairs looks amazing. I also have an old carpet from the 80s. I'm thinking about using laminate floor boards. I'm not handy at all, but I am honestly a little bit excited to get this little project started. Thanks for sharing your video. Best regards from the old north
Great work! Love that weathered grey color against the white. Can you give info on both tools, the floor sander and "Brad Nailer." I am a female and want to know what I should look for when I buy those tools.
I have the Bostitch air compressor and brad nailer. I bought my tools in a kit from Amazon and it also included a finishing nailer and a staple gun. I rented the floor sander from Home Depot. I think it was $20 for four hours.
Perfect video and definitely going to use it as a reference when I get around to doing my stairs. Probably going to leave out the bead board and paint instead as I want to try and expose all of the original features in our cottage. But great video, short sweet with plenty of information. Especially the every other step reminder.
My husband would be the same way. But first he would want me to make a list of what changes to our house are most important in order and get an idea for how much it would cost (since we just got a house, we do have such a ljst). And this would be low on my list. He isn't handy, he is techy. However, for us, we figure sometimes we can pay people so he could instead consider that time to work (he works from home), and he makes more than the price we would pay for someone. It isn't intrinsically bad to off load tasks to others. Plus, in my opinion, having wood stairs would look weird since our landing has carpet, I would want them to match. Our current house makeover task is changing all the blinds on the first floor to vertical and we are getting devices on them to make them open and close on their own. This has a practical purpose and a measurable outcome (better moods by being bright when we go downstairs in the morning, for instance) and right now we don't usually bother to open all the blinds/curtains up. Just offering a different perspective.
I do this and alot more, throw his ass away....IM KIDDING!!. i do this for a living and HATE doing it at home......i think its cause i just want to chill when i'm there lol
I agree with others that you can do it. I don't understand the judgmental comments, though, that's unnecessary. I do most of the renovations around my house, because my husband works long hours and I'm at home. In addition, my dad has extensive building experience, so I get him to teach me things when I can't figure them out myself.
Oh WOW!!!!! ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL! You've totally inspired me to do my stairs. I hate carpet especially with kids and a dog in the house. You are an amazing woman.
You have given me a great idea for my stairs!!! When you picked up that can of stain, I held my breathe…..CLASSIC GREY!!! Excellent taste! You do wonderful work Lady 😁
Dana B My My stairs had ugly plywood and a un-even floor, Ugh! I bought cheap laminated wood flooring (due to budget)and I was so disappointed when it couldn't stick to the damb plywood. I gave up and my floor is still in need of a make over 😔😭
Dana B Those stair caps are only pine.. decent but not hardwood like oak or maple. $10 each at Home Depot .. you need 12 for a flight of stairs, $120, you can do it, you’ll be alright
So question what did you use for the riser because looking at Home Depot and lowes they are selling them for 13 dollars each which adds up to over 200 dollars!! Help me out please lmaoooo
Hey I went to Lowe's, you have to buy the sheet it's long...than you will have them cut it to the size you need the , sheet was $26, you give them your measurements that's how she did it..cutting is free when you pay for the material
The problem with putting poly on staars, is that you can easily slip and fall. Especially if you're just wearing socks. I would have put a little sand in the stain to give it some grip and make it slip resistant.
Came out amazing. I'm about to take the carpet off of my stairs so I came here for ideas. I'm 100% using breadboard. You did a fantastic job it looks fantastic
Actually, I work for a homebuilder and that would have cost about $1 to $2K for a contractor to do and can add anywhere from $6 to $8K to the overall value of a home at the point of sale (not on property taxes). The weathered country chic look is really in style right now and hard floors are always a plus.
Yes I too am a single female divorced and I’ve done everything from building a bookcase, laying Lino, carpet, cleaning piles under sink and reassembling, I.do everything. I’ve a 21 yr old 6ft6 who still screams muuuuum when there’s a fly in his room. Jeez! Well done
That’s amazing! You did a fabulous job. I was wanting to redo my stairs the same & was hesitant but after seeing you do yours do beautifully I think with a little help of my dad I will give it a go!
Hello.. I want to remove my carpet. I have a landing at the bottom and that stair doesn't have a lip.. Can you show step by step how you added the lip then boards to fill the landing? Thank you
I'm looking to remodel my staircase as well and I this video gave me such great ideas. You did a great job. Thank you so much for your video, It's pure gold!
You should have seen the floor we found underneath the carpet in our cottage. Original stone floor. It goes right the way through from the front door to the back door. Exposing it has added value to our home. And it looks amazing!
@@polluxtroy69 I don't understand the desire to cover hardwood flooring! I can imagine some area rugs over stone, to warm it up, but to cover it completely is absolute insanity!
@@toyadesigns7617 I just pulled out 20+ yrs old stair carpet, now not sure should I do what u did or just put new carpet in because it's a rental unit and every one scare me that plaint wood/hardwood floor (HWF) stair can be slippery cause tenants fall then they sue landlord, and also some pros are CARPET REDUCE NOISE, also comfortable to climb stair and won't fall down easy - just change carpet (cost $200?) every 7yrs is cheaper than 1 tenant fall/injury lawsuit. So I'm confused at this point should I go plaint wood/HWF or put new carpet? Another Q is should I resurface 20+ yrs old DIY 4 bedroom 750 sq-ft of hardwood floor, sand it 3x from 36-60-80 grits then put in 3 coats to save a $3k job or hire a HWF refinishing pro because all of my friends said no landlord or homeowner they know will DIY for HWF, they fear of leave scratch make, they always hire HWF Pro. I look at youtube learn if it's possible DIY to save $3k. What do u guys advise for both stair+HWF jobs? Thx. FYI: SF the extreme Libtards city has all rental laws against the LANDLORD or capitalist or rich, honest, smart, strong ones in favor to help the poor, dumb, vulnerable, druggies, LGBTQ, and illegals - they make laws forever believe+help the tenants b/c tenants are weak/poor/victim of the landlord who was depicted as strong, rich who take advantages from vulnerable ones - Libtards make laws everything UPSIDE DOWN. My friends hate it so they move to TX pays 0% tax=TX rewards smart, honest, capitalist, private home-ownership, personal property rights (pro landlords), and rewards legal citizens who hard work. I've to pay $11k to evict bad tenants - Rent Control/Eviction Control laws punish landlord's rent will never able to CATCH UP WITH INFLATION by Rent Control law. It's so hard to pay tenants $11k to $1M to leave (yes, pay customer=tenant to go away is LIBTARDS law LOL; ppl ask is this landlord's private building or govt subsidize housing help the illegal/poor/dummy/druggies? Lib=Dem=Commies=Everything UPSIDE DOWN! Free market is the best Mother Nature law, even China do NOT have Rent Control law but only 1 or 2 child policy birth control to ensure people not stupidly mass produce at public's resources to foot the bill!). Anyway, get back to point/Qs lol. Finally, we paid tenants $11k to go away then city put a stamp on our property as a punish landlord do not rent to old tenant. After they vacate it, we can remodel it finally. Ppl hate Libtards for big reasons. Soon I want to move to TX joint my friends too :)!
Thank goodness I found your video. I've been looking all over TH-cam for a way to redo my stairs that did not require a significant amount of reworking, like installing new treads and risers over the old. I never considered staining the existing treads. I'm going to give your solution a shot. Thanks
With all due respect. I really don’t like people give out false hope. Because with all tools you are using is not just $80. Plus the wood is not just $80.
You can always use old fashion way. A brad nailer is simply the replacement for traditional hammer and nails. Look in the description for the breakout cost.
Love this! My husband and I are putting in new laminate flooring on the second floor but the stair treads are a fortune! We were just going to leave it as carpet but after seeing your video, I think it is just what we need!

Most don't have nice pine under their carpet. Thats rare. It's usually plywood or fiber board.
It’s soft wood. It’s only meant for carpeted stair treads.
Can you do this with plywood or the fiber board?
@@shaunabee I'm wondering the same thing...I think I'm just going to put vinyl planks down over the plywood instead.

I ended up pulling up the landing and closing the gap. I wanted the lined of separate pieces of wood.
I swear I couldn't get my husband to do this. He would pay some one and waste all that money. Smh u did an amazing job.
This is A DO IT UR SELF VIDEO LADYS... Not Tell ur Husband to do it video smh....
Then you do it!
Wth...i hate people like you...i feel sorry for your husband.
Great job! How are they holding up?
They have held up fine
Wow, great job! They turned out so perfectly. I love that color, too.
Using this as inspo for my project! I’m so excited!
You did a great job!! Looks nice and professional
The bead board is a great idea! Thanks for sharing!
You are so lucky that you had actual solid wood underneath. Most are crappy partial board like mine. $80 is like 2 steps for me....
Truth.
Dana B My
My stairs had ugly plywood and a un-even floor, Ugh! I bought cheap laminated wood flooring (due to budget)and I was so disappointed when it couldn't stick to the damb plywood. I gave up and my floor is still in need of a make over 😔😭
Same here!!!
Same the wood is all old and tear

Those stair caps are only pine.. decent but not hardwood like oak or maple.
That looks amazing I’m going to be doing my railing this week and now I’m like ummm what’s under my carpet
Awesome job I’m so impressed
I never thought about using beadboard for risers. That's a nice look. Great job.
You are one cool lady!!! Good job!
@ mwa
Excellent work,, looks professional and the video was detailed and not too long.
That looks fabulous. Makes the staircase look wider. ❤️👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Beautiful ! Very gorgeous ! Wonderful ! Fantastic looking ! And the stairs cane out cool also .
The problem with putting poly on staars, is that you can easily slip and fall. Especially if you're just wearing socks.
I would have put a little sand in the stain to give it some grip and make it slip resistant.
j Huh?
JT, What's so hard to understand?
I’ve been doing this for 7 years the poly coating does not make your stairs slippery lol
Mario, try walking on them with just socks, it can get slippery.
oh, please please please don't put sand in a finish.
Came out amazing. I'm about to take the carpet off of my stairs so I came here for ideas. I'm 100% using breadboard. You did a fantastic job it looks fantastic
I can’t wait to get my first home! I will be doing DIYs like these. Thank you!
Looks awesome.
THESE ARE BEAUTIFUL! Awesome job & great vid! 👍🏻
Awesome job. Once the kids get a bit older, this is exactly the look we’ll be going for.
Gonna “favorite” this vid, and see you in a couple years!
This has inspired me to do the same
Girl you are a boss! Awesome job!
Damn girl I was wondering how I was gonna finish my stairs! You just inspired me!!!!
That came out really nice, and the price point is even better.
Beautifully done. As a realtor, I can tell you that's more or less a 8000 dollar job, and you did it for 80 bucks!
She did a nice job, but an $8,000.00 job that is not.
Jeez! Well done
Yes queen...a girl after my own heart. Tools and heels. 😍💪🏾
Amazing work. I've watched this video several times to see if this would work in my home. ??? How did you cut the beadboard down to size ??
measure then used a mitre saw
That’s amazing! You did a fabulous job. I was wanting to redo my stairs the same & was hesitant but after seeing you do yours do beautifully I think with a little help of my dad I will give it a go!
Great job Toya. I'm inspired.
Girl...can you come to my house...I'm serious. That looks amazingly
Hello.. I want to remove my carpet. I have a landing at the bottom and that stair doesn't have a lip.. Can you show step by step how you added the lip then boards to fill the landing? Thank you
Good job 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻♥️
1.3 million views and only 15k "likes"? How is that possible? Very helpful video. Thanks for sharing.

💃💃💃👍👌👩😱😍You go girl looks awesome
I'm looking to remodel my staircase as well and I this video gave me such great ideas. You did a great job. Thank you so much for your video, It's pure gold!
this is lovely
Great video. You did a great job. I am going to peak under my carpeted stairs & see if I can replicate.
Why on earth would someone cover that beautiful wood with carpet?!
@@jessicastillwell2222 easier for kids to crawl on, no worrying about chips, ...
nice work! what is a "b board"?
beadboard
those look great
Keith Reynolds talking about the stairs right?
Keith Reynolds general 0q is
I’m back!! Just got around to doing mine!! Thanks again Queen!!
I think both stairs are nice carpet is more comfortable but wood is easier to clean if something spill
The carpet was getting pretty dirty, so that is why I went with this easy clean solution
It’s still a very inexpensive way to redo the stairwell. It looks good
You might as well forget about doing a DIY project if you don’t have any tools.
Love this! My husband and I are putting in new laminate flooring on the second floor but the stair treads are a fortune! We were just going to leave it as carpet but after seeing your video, I think it is just what we need!
Before: ... ... ...
After: !!! !!! !!!
I love this this is beautiful. And my kind of colors. I’m going to do this in my salon.
