While I do agree with you the best thing I could suggest is not to get emotional involved and just go after $100 boxes and start pulling and selling/flipping up to better, better, better. Also focus on buying 3 or 4 $30 or $40 cards and then use those to get more items and then eventually your past the ‘glass ceiling’, and dealing with the high end stuff.
Orrrr just buy that cards you love :) and start buying more Pokémon too bc I only collect high value pokemon cards/sealed vintage and I’m kinda just a troll who loves all things cards
I agree with you on the hobby prices, but I only open retail and I pulled many high dollar cards from blasters/mega boxes. Nothing crazy, Under a grand but a few hundred-dollar cards. This is a HOBBY not an investment.
@@johngrant8473yea. Big part of flipping is realizing when u lose and just sell to cut losses instead of waiting. So many people bought high pop cards for 100 bucks, and might be worth 20 now.
"Worth grading" is subjective. If you like the card and/or just want it graded, then it's worth grading. If you're grading it to increase the value, then it's usually not worth it financially to grade an ultra modern base. Yea, there are probably too many base cards. But if they print less, boxes become impossible to find, and the price of the base card gets too expensive for casual collectors. I personally think it's bad for the future of the hobby how disrespected the low-end stuff is treated. Just because something only costs $20 doesn't mean it isn't cool. Honestly, there are soooo many parallels, sp's, ssp's, 1 of 1's, case hits, and eccetera nowadays that most casual collectors don't even know wth their looking at. You don't have to explain a '89 Upperdeck Griffey, or an '11 Topps Update Trout, or even '18 Prizm Luka to a casual collector. They just know it's important, even if it's not as valuable as some hippopotamus parallel numbered to 46 or whatever lol
I feel once grading fees settle back to $8 or less, then getting base or any cards graded is worthwhile and we’ll see set registries for the hobby by collectors and the less experienced resellers leave the hobby
283k subs and counting. Sheesh! Congrats geoff. Looks like ull be at a million in a couple years. Ur a great ambassador for the sports card world. Wish u and ur team nothing but the best.
If the base card debate is from an investment perspective, then the answer lies in production run spikes (aka availability). So basically, if it’s a base card from late 80s/early 90s OR from any year after ~2019, it doesn’t make mathematical sense to grade in most cases. Only exception are the outlier scenarios (I.e. Tiffany, Desert Shields, etc)
Im a terrible collector i buy as many variations of my favorite players who i idiolized as a kid and make binders for each one. 😅 sometimes i think there are thousands of people out there crazier than me that if one day i choose to sell the binders those type of collectors will buy them 😅
Base will always have a place in the hobby! Collecting/Investing in a base card, grab the highest and best conditioned version. Which would be a BGS Black Label.
I think grading base cards is good for selling. Buyers want to know the card is mint. For collecting id rather buy a better raw card. Love the videos!!!!
Base cards are undervalued! 😀 Hardly ever agree with Geoff but I do when it comes to the kids and having a very good player's rookie card as a PSA10. With grading fees to much lower and the pop being so high, it truly makes it way more affordable for kids and others that enter the hobby to have a card they want. It's the smaller known cards that helps kids and others have a good/fun starting point and strive to move up to better cards. Is the fact that Zion and Ja having 30-40k graded cards going to help the hobby, it just might.
Whenever people say base cards are worthless i just answer and say give me any Mahomes, Brady,Ohtani,Trout, etc rookies you have, since even a base Donruss Rated Rookie of Mahomes goes for north of $200. I'll even take your base Prizm T-Laws,Burrow and Hurts.
When grading was $50-75/card, you can absolutely argue for low-dollar cards having value, because it cost that much more to grade it. Now that grading costs are lower, that same $5 base card, graded by PSA, only carries a monetary value of $25, because that's all it took to get it graded. The 10 does give it a boost, but not like it used to.
Besides Mike trouts topps update rookie most base cards are not to sought after to much. Everyone wants an auto on there rookie nowadays or a parallel.
Grading base cards takes up time that numbered, autos, SPs, and memorabilia can be graded. If it's not vintage don't waste your time. Also the pop report gets crazy.
... the one thing is that base cards are pure. When we grew up, there is no doubt about what Topps card was the true rookie. A base set, even to this day, is not contrived. A base rookie does have meaning to me even to this day. That said, what T-pot said about having a high-end 2022 Zion versus a base Zion RC does makes sense, and I have always lamented that the hobby is so rookie-oriented.
My opinion. Old collectors who have cards that are not shiny with glitter and are as bright as a sun do not want a modern that will blind you next to a base card. Why? Because that card will take the attention away from all the normal base cards.
Here's a question, is it better to collect the Bowman pre-rookie or actual rookie card of a baseball player? Acuna's bat up card is just really dull compared to the Bowman Draft versions.
.....sad that no one mentioned base carss for theor roghtful purpose. To collect and to build sets. 😢 This video is an example of what is exactly wrong with the indistry. It's a HOBBY.....Have fun ..... Not a grifter con job.
No, Geoff has a hard enough time pronouncing normal names like Walter Payton that he pronounces Walder Payden.🤦♂️ Also the NHL cannot possibly make the same mistake three times of putting an unwanted team in Atlanta.
@@carolinatarheels7903 Have you seen the Hockey collecting 101 vid in the SCI University playlist? The way he pronounces Rocket Richard is all-time level stuff.
I like base card psa 10s. Just hard to wrap my head around how it can be worth to grade. Like if it’s 10 bucks raw, and it’s a psa 10 pop 23k, how can it be worth more than 40 bucks? And if it’s a psa 9 then it’ll probably be worth less than the raw. I would say stick to grading rare numbered cards that can’t have a high pop. Unless it’s like a wemby or corbin Carroll, somebody u know is going to be an icon. Somebody u know will always have a demand.
Why grade a base card, if it was a rookie card of a well known player but like Purdys, I would get it graded but I would recommend to go to your local card store for their opinion but if u can sell raw at a high price, go for it. You can also try breaks that have a full case of $5k or more hobby boxes but low income ones and pick up a few of the inserts and u can pay, u can buy a $50 team and score a 1/1 and it paid for your spot in the break and value of card can few hundred to thousands but of course it depends on player.
Question, I'm a huge Steph Curry collector, do you think there is any room for profit buying Curry cards at the moment? He's still banging 30-40 point games regularly and his cards are at a premium and seems stable being a future hall of famer but is there any meat left on the bone? Obviously if he wins another ring we could be looking at a profit but will they rise between now and the finals when he is always playing so good particularly at the moment?
I actually grade base cards.. some of the modern card are really ultra flashy looking.. a curry base Prizm PSA 10 can go between 35-80 bucks… I grade any Lebron , giannis, or curry.. plus I use my base cards as a learning curve to find out how PSA grades certain cards and what mistakes I possibly make.
All of the base cards graded from 2020 forward, including now will provide lots of cards for collectors to target in $1 bins in the future. Any advice advising folks to even CONSIDER grading base cards is irresponsible. The Zion base card will continue to decline, no doubt.
I would invest in him… he seems legit… I wouldn’t pay 2 grand though. He will never be a steph or Lebron … I would put him in the Jalen Brunson category .. star but not a superstar

Noob question ... Let's say you have a 1990 Ken Griffey Jr. card at a PSA 10 (yes, I get that's hard). How can we say that in 20 years that card won't be worth anything? Wouldn't that just be guessing? Asking respectfully of course. Love your stuff.

Two words: market manipulation. I think population count will matter in the longterm, but true scarcity is never based on a numerical grade. I think the market will look more at population count in the future and will gravitate and expand towards more rare categories in the hobby like original photos and game tickets.
