Swiss Airbus A330-300 - Massive thunderstorms upon landing in Miami

  • Flight LX 64 from Zurich to Miami / July 31 2015
    HB-JHE
    After a 9 hour 45 minute flight from Zurich Switzerland, Miami welcomed us with a front of severe thunderstorms, hail and high wind gusts, prompting Miami International Airport to close for more than 2 hours. Many flights were diverted to Tampa or Orlando that afternoon - we were lucky given the circumstances and just vectored around Florida towards the Florida Keys, Cuba and than upwards the Florida Gulf Coast before final vectors for a landing on RWY26R. Look at the amazing waterspray caused by the reversers, giving in impression about the amount of water on the runway.
    Total airborne time was 10 hours and 50 minutes and then another hour of hold and taxi on the ground until we reached the gate.
    Kudos to the pilots really - manual landing / autopilot disconnect sound at 21:48, and then nicely correcting a strong windgust / nose-up pitch at 22:34 - great flight and amazing landing

    They went to great lengths to avoid flying directly into the storm. They first flew past Miami on the East Coast all the way to the West Coast (Notice Marco Island on the West Coast of Florida where I live). Then flew back to land in Miami. This is not their normal route, but this way they avoided having to fly directly through the storm into Miami. Great job.

    Wow, this is simply magnificent structure showcased by these mature cumulus congestus that are seemingly advancing towards cumulonimbi status! The individual deep convective towers are absolutely mesmerizing to look at from this perspective, as well, leaving much to be admired. Absolutely fantastic footage shown here, and many thanks for sharing!

    The crew seemed to do a good job of diverting from the worst of it. Nice video, it is cool to see the water streaking across the window pane, its direction clearly showing the angle of attack, significantly higher than the mild deck angle throughout the descent through the rain.

    I wish I wasn't scared of flying. It's been over a decade since I was last on a flight. We flew through a storm. I froze stiff. I couldn't move any part of my body. Couldn't speak. Scary. That's when I really understood the meaning of that phrase 'scared stiff'.

    In 1966, I was on a 707 returning home after 3 years in Germany. We flew into a 'massive thunderstorm', and believe me, there's nothing massive about this. In addition to biblical rain and lightning bolts, the aircraft felt like a carnival tilt-a-whirl.

    • @heatherstub
      @heatherstub 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh I love that ride. But I'd compare what you went through to the revolver or ferris-Whirl. That ride pulled some serious Gs. You just had to relax and go with the flow, because if you didn't, you'd lose breakfast and lunch. Not fun! It really felt like you were in severe air turbulence, and the last spinning nose-dive you take on the Ferris-Whirl was weigh too much. I'll never do that again. I also won't ride the Octipus. I actually had to ride the Tilt-A-Whirl two times to overcome the severe headache and the scare I got on the Octipus. I almost came out of that ride, and then, my twin sister, Maggie, almost fell from it. My Uncle Kenny caught her hanging on for dear life on the bar over his seat! I really hope they've closed that ride for good, because too many people got killed from falling off that ride.

    • @davidbarnett9312
      @davidbarnett9312 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think I rode the 'revolver' in B'haven. You're held in by centrifugal force, and it tilts over on its side?

    I know people are pretty critical of Airbus due to their use of composites and not being American-made, and that is all warranted. But from this video alone, that looked like a damned good climb. Since aerodynamic drag and wing tip vortices have given rise to the winglets, I question the much smaller winglets on this jet. Everything else being equal, this airliner does rattle a lot but it's impossible to tell whether it is the plane itself or a rough runway surface. Great video! I enjoyed watching and the audio is especially "clean." My favorite plane sounds here are the takeoff "buzz saw" and the engine sounds as the pilots flare the aircraft for landing. They are very quiet but you can tell there is a lot going on!

    I am glad that you made it through it! These can be very bad storms, seriously, especially around Miami. Sometimes, Planes may land and take-off again because the end of the landing strip is obscured by a rainstorm, in which case, your plane will take off again, and spend 20 minutes circling Miami Airport for a place to land. NO KIDDING! That is what happened to me!

      I echo that! What type of camera did you use? It sure wasn't the GoPro. If they could make the GoPro sound as good as this, I'd be very happy! Here's the funny thing. I'm totally blind and have been since birth, so why should I care? Haha. Well, for us blinks, it's all about the sound. Sweet music to our ears, and yes! I do feel like I'm riding with you in the next seat. As soon as those engines spooled up near the beginning, I knew the pilot was preparing to fly through some pretty crummy weather. Those pilots had some experience with them. I was on a flight to Chicago when we got caught in massive thunderstorms. Our pilot had over 30 years of experience, including having been a fighter pilot during WWII. Nonetheless, once we landed, we all had to be checked out, because we hit such severe turbulence that we lost our landing gear from the intensity of the turbulence. We were on a DC-8, and even though the pilots did everything they could to avoid these storms, we didn't have the radar we have today. One drop took us down 6,000 feet in 10 seconds. I researched it myself, and I could hardly doubt it, because we had lots of popping in our ears, bruised ribs and sore muscles for several days after that. Everybody who wore shoes that couldn't be tied or buckled had to remove them, because anything that wasn't stoed or strapped down would be thrown about the cabbin. I had to get on another plane later that evening. Thank God, because I don't think I'd be able to enjoy flying again if I hadn't.
