I agree that there isn’t a big enough change to upgrade my 4 to a 5. I don’t think you mentioned it but there is a firmware update for the action 4 specifically for the new battery.
Thank you very much! You are the only one on TH-cam who did the test, I asked for a test like this on several TH-cam channels and none did it. A really surprising result, I thought the battery of the 5 could last longer using the DJI 4. And I was also really curious about the battery of the 4 in the 5.
@@WheelieGoodTV Hahaha yes it will! Good companies like honest reviews. I saw information that despite the same sensor, the DJI 5 has a 4-nanometer processor construction, which is why it achieves better energy efficiency.
Thank you! finally somebody did the test that actually useful! I did the live streaming test at 1080p30 the other day with the old battery and I got interesting result. Before the firmware update, I got about 100 minutes, and after the firmware update I got 115 minutes. No overheat. I know the new battery wont helps much but having exactly the same recording time is abit bummer!!
Darn it! I bought 2 of the new batteries for my Action 4 before seeing this video. If anything, Ive found them to perform slightly worse than the original batteries! Definitely not worth buying. Thanks for confirming my regretful suspicions 👍🏾
This video is really very helpful, because I just bought an action 4 and have plans to buy an additional battery belonging to the action 5 pro and use it in my action 4. I was very lucky to find this video. So I can save money because there is a price difference between action 4 and action 5 batteries. Thank you very much for making this comparison video. 🙏🏻 And I will subscribe to your TH-cam channel. 🙂
@@94ryanrichard yes there are a lot of users including myself who can’t justify the move to the 5 but would have liked the longer battery life. Well at least we all know now that it doesn’t work. I truly suspect the 5 is running a lower quality/bit rate to prolong the battery life. It’s very naughty of DJI.
I am wanting to do 66 for my 50th in a couple of years . Can't wait to see your updates . As you know I'm likewise a DJI osmo fan , the 5 hasn't really blown me away enough to change up. That said , as I'm still using (and happy enough) on the OA3 . As I have got a mic 2 it will be time to move on for next season.
Brilliant to know Dave, thank you. I am one of those vloggers who records A to B, but certainly do still have a lot of editing to do. I record at 2.7k which is more than adequate in my opinion, even for big screen tv’s. Battery life out of my OA3 truly is amazing. Thanks again.
Hah ! As soon as I read about the new battery capacity THIS very thought went through my mind 😁. Thank you for answering the question. BUT, what did make me consider upgrading, correct me if I'm wrong, is that you can now connect BOTH MIC 2 mics via Bluetooth to the Action 5 Pro camera, no need for that receiver which is only held in by the USB C socket and does not fit when you have the protector cage on. So one can, with ease now, record one's verbiage 😉 AND engine/exhaust sound.
Interesting test! Sir, new battery need 4.45V, when old need 4.4V, it mean new battery with "old" charger or "old" cameras would be uncharged to full capacity
Agree with you on this 100%!! thanks for confirming. Only thing i find interesting is those newer 1900mah batteries that work with the 4 👍 I greatly appreciate your input Dave especially when it comes to film/camera info.
Thank you for this vid, I bought a new battery when they came out and found exactly the same. I thought the battery was faulty so I contacted DJI who sent out another battery and its the same.

Thank you for the test. To me this is not a conclusive test since batteries behave differently as they approach empty charge. Id like to see the same test with a fan blowing on each camera. I didn't have a dji camera but i know different settings on a GoPro cause different levels of heat generation. Could your camera in the test have had 2 different settings?
No, I made sure my cameras were both set exactly the same. I tell you what though, why don’t you go and buy two cameras, two batteries and two fans and put your mind at ease.
@WheelieGoodTV didn't mean to offend. I'm a bit overkill when it comes to scientific method. certainly there is value in the work you've done. I think you have the only video on TH-cam right now doing this test.
Do you use the MIC 2 with your DJI Action 4? Did they ever update the delay of the mic 2 turning on when you hit the quick record button on the camera? I do it of off road ridding in Florida on my Tenere and trying to decide if I should add the osmo action 4 with the mic 2 Bluetooth mic.
@ I’ve been using the DJI Osmo Action 3 with the receiver attached to the camera and followed your lead on placing the wireless mic in my neck gator. I definitely capture great audio that way. I haven’t had luck with using a wired mic. Love your channel. You are a professional and a master in your craft. Your videos have definitely inspired me and have provided me with some great knowledge and insight.
Is that why they dropped the bitrate? Overheating? I've got the 3, the 4 and the 5 Pro, and tbh I find the 3 is still a great camera, but at the moment I think the 4 has better video quality than the 5 Pro
On a side note, the image quality in this vid was spot on! (Although the facial tracking was a bit over sensitive/reactive). I thought the new 5s had a larger size battery. Not backwards compatible
Interesting that you're recording in 50 fps. Given that most monitors are running at a 30fps or multiples thereof, im using a 30/60 workflow. I can't find a reason to use 25/50 any more. Interested in your thoughts on that.
I’ve made a few vids on this but at 25/50 European format, everything talks to each other when I need to insert footage from drones/cameras that I might have already previously shot for my TV work. The other thing and perhaps the main reason is that the frame rates were designed to match the electrical frequency in the country they were used in hence why in all modern day cams even action cams like GoPro it is now called system frequency rather than frame rate. The biggest notable thing here is when you’re shooting inside a garage or your house using the ceiling lights powered by your house electricity, they will flicker a lot if you’re shooting 30/60 and you’re in Europe/UK. Select 25/50 and this will smooth out the flicker a lot.
At 30/60 fps here Europe and the UK you will see flickering from any sort of artificial lighting as the mains frequency is 50hz. The USA uses 60hz mains and so 30/60 fps is fine over there.
Flickering, indoors. OK. We have a 30/60 process at work (Germany) and don't have problems with flickering but maybe we're lucky. Personally it annoys me as a user when the 25/50s play on my 60fps monitors but maybe I'm just over sensitive to that.
@@WheelieGoodTV Wow that's some handy info on frame rates/frequency and indoor lighting.
