  • Late Night Intruder | Vanlife Nightmare
    In this USA vanlife travel vlog we continue our journey north in our campervan to Michigan's Upper Peninsula - starting in Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, where we announce our biggest challenge yet!
    After leaving one of the best campsites we've stayed in so far on this trip, we made our way to Mackinac Island to try the famous fudge and soak in the surroundings before continuing north to meet with some locals! Alex goes morning kayaking on one of Michigan's many lakes before we have our worst night's sleep in the RV so far due to an intruder in the night.

    Hello Beans,
    I’ve been using a product called Fresh Cab in my 27” Lazy Daze RV since I brought it home from the manufacturer back in 2015.
    Fresh Cab is available in Amazon and at many hardware stores. It is basically a packet of balsam that smells like a pine tree and it’s scent throws off the nose of little critters like mice.
    Mice are reliant on their sense of smell to alert them to danger. Fresh Cab hinders their ability to smell danger and thusly they generally won’t stay near the scent and avoid the area.
    Buy several packets and set them around the rv. Outside storage bays, inside cabinets and under kitchen sink. I’ve never had an intruder and have traveled to many National Parks throughout the years.
    Fresh Cab videos are in TH-cam. Very interesting and safe for everyone even the mouse. Good luck.

    Hi Guys, just a quick tip, mice hate peppermint oil. You can diffuse the oil and splash some around at their entry points. They hate it and it’s not offensive to us. Love the channel. Enjoy your trip! When you get to Maine look us up

    You can try to stop them from getting in by blocking holes but I will tell you from experience that they will always find a way in. Best to deter them from looking in the first place. We have had really good luck with Spearmint oil, mice don't like the smell of it and we put some in a spray bottle and dilute it with water and just spray a circle around our camper every couple of days. Smells nice, no poison and we haven't had a mouse since.

    I always wondered why some folk put lights on the ground around their rig. I was told to distract rodents. In my opinion the western part of the US is the best. Make sure to stop at as many National sites that time allows. We started off with just National Parks in mind. Then we purchased one of those huge National Park books to get our “stamp”. National Monuments ; why not. Turns out the monuments are just as spectacular. We allow our cool National park book to dictate our route through a state. Don’t forget to participate in the park ranger talks. Park Rangers are so passionate about their park. Statue of Liberty- National Monument-part of the U.S. National Park Service.

    Peppermint oil is fantastic for repelling all rodent pests. We spray all the exterior openings, the wheel wells, some parts of engine bay. At home we repell field mice by dousing the exterior door thresholds. Has to be replenished every fall as the cute lil' mamas are looking for good nesting sites. Non toxic as alcohol diluted essential oil. Happy Camping!

      Then,take a piece of duct tape, roll it so sticky all around. Then set it on newspaper,then set trap on top of tape.

    rodent prevention . . . in addition to the mesh for the openings, get a peppermint based spray. Whenever you stop at a new location, use the spray around your van, on the tires and also in your engine compartment. Most hardware stores carry a version of the product. Another technique is to get Irish Spring soap. You then take bits of the soap and place them in various areas of your van such as all compartments, drawers, cabinets and so on. Good Luck!

We all settled for a nice rest when all you could hear was scrambling, squeaking and gnawing in the rafters and walls. Dad got with the owner and three nights with a dozen mouse traps later, problem solved. We could hear the traps when they went off with a . It was quite entertaining. Yep! There went another one! What we did with our travel trailer to prevent mice coming in. First, when it's dark outside somebody be inside shining a flashlight and the other outside looking around and underneath to see where there might be holes. Mice don't chew through steel wool usually so we just plugged those holes that we found with steel wool. Also we use these bags that are called Fresh Cab.... They actually smell quite nice to humans. If anybody recommends Irish spring bar soap or dryer sheets... Well let's just say our friendly Intruders used both of those things to make a nest. 😂.... Safe travels and enjoy your stay here in the great USA. 🤩

    I'm so jealous of your time on the UP--groovin' on your content and your 5-yr challenge idea. For mice, who also really enjoy a good meal of electrical wiring; I distribute dryer sheets (fabric softener) liberally throughout the spaces and cubby-holes where mice could enter or call home. They are very effective, available anywhere and cheap, cheap, cheap. Since I began this practice in 2019, I haven't found a single trace of a mouse in our camper in Mexico, which sits vacant seven months of the year. While all around me fight mouse infestations, I don't. Who da thunk?

    Great vid! I had two large “breeches” in mouse security in my “over the cab” compartment. Close to the cab doors and “closest to you” corners. Steel wool filling in the space with spray foam on top. At least that’s one spot that looked like a way in. I’m sure there are more to be discovered unfortunately. I was just in the U.P. and saw Bald Eagles and Golden Eagles! Have fun!

    Hiya Beans, you need to cover all vents with fine mesh and remember where there's one mouse 🐁 there's probably more, I would not poison them incase they crawl somewhere and die and your left with a terrible smell.
    Peanuts work well in any trap.
    Good hunting, and stay safe 🙏.

    Great videos Travel Beans. Keep up the good work 👍 now about your mouse problem your best bet is to get some spray foam from a home improvement store and just crawl under your van or find a lift and look for any crack or holes and fill them but try not to get the foam on you for it is very sticky and always use the gloves. Also keep it off the exhaust pipes, sometimes they miss sealing around the holes of pipes and wires at the factory. Best of luck and Thanks so much, I can't wait to see the next video. Safe Travels and Take Care.

    Love your videos. You guys are fresh and special. As for your mouse - please be very careful with this critter. Yes, seal up everything you can - but removal may be a real problem because the damage they can and will do to low voltage wiring can be very extensive. You do not need that kind of repair - especially since your last fire. I don't like using them, but they work and that is the sticky pads. No need to bait - but it surely is difficult to dispose of. I am praying your live traps works quickly.

    For the mouse - Check where your water drainage lines leave the bottom of the van, if you have any. We had an issue with our travel trailer with a mouse and the only spot we could find where it could have gotten is was the lose spray foam around our water line drainage valves. One thing you could try as well, at night close up the van as tightly as possible, but have all the lights on. Then crawl around the bottom of the van to see if you can find any light leaks. Good Luck!

  • @mawvius
    @mawvius ปีที่แล้ว +13

    As an Englishman grown-up amongst the lush rolling vallies of the South-West, we would often share our home with field mice. A well nutritioned mouse will turn its nose up to most bait but will struggle to resist protein in the form of meat such as mince or the best, alive like worms or insects. We always used humane traps similar to that in the video but much smaller and triangular for skirting board corners.
    Whilst a smidge of a laborious pain, you can engulf the inside with a non-toxic smoke machine to discover every gap in the van, which can then be sealed, one-way valved or covered in mesh.
    Good luck beans!

  • @kayjay9516
    @kayjay9516 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    We’ve had an infestation of mice and we ending up having to kill them, they mostly ignored the live traps. The pest control lady from the council said if a biro can fit in a gap, a mouse can. Only when we’d been round blocking up tiny holes and gaps in the exterior of the roof and house did they finally stop coming in. With one mouse, make sure any food is sealed and inaccessible and hopefully it’ll go for the live trap. Ours liked chocolate spread.

    Hi guys, there is something called tracking dust (fluorescent) that's used together with an UV light. Sprinkle some dust in and around the area u suspect of being an ingress point and leave if for a day or so then come back with your UV torch and u should see lil tiny foot prints indicating which areas need to be proofed and sealed.
    Your welcome 😀

    Robin from Creativity RV just had a YT video about getting rid of mice. Lots of information and advice. If you aren't too tender hearted, her suggestion of the mousetrap set up in a brown paper bag is great- after the snap, just roll up the bag and dispose of it. Keeps things tidy.

    • @Sweetpatches24
      @Sweetpatches24 ปีที่แล้ว

      Those snapper traps don’t always kill the mouse. They can snap on the foot, tail, or end of the nose causing great suffering. They are very cruel.

      It’s not illegal to film in national parks, just maybe illegal to use a drone in national parks. But Kara and Nate got a permit too.

    • @jessloudermilk6935
      @jessloudermilk6935 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      There was a court ruling that allowed it, ruling the need for a permit unconstitutional. I believe the ruling was in January 2021 (after Kara and Nate were fined)
      Edit: though apparently after reading other comments and looking I to it that was reversed in August 2022. Would be worth reaching out to each park and documenting their responses!

    A storage box with a balanced beam (maybe a wooden ruler) works. Balance the beam over the edge of the box, bait the inboard end with peanut past *way better chan cheese). Mouse walks out to taste the paste, the beam tilts and tips the mouse into the box. Made properly, it's self-reloading.
    Feed them to the fish in the lake.
