Repotting and pruning Adenium

  • Today we will tend for the Adenium plant I purchased some time ago. I was not intending of doing anything this year, until I got more used to it. But things are never as planned.
    ▼▼▼More info bellow!▼▼▼
    The Adenium is doing ok, but due to the string winds and flimsy pot, it fell on the floor and was rolled around my terrace, so the tip broke. For this reason I decided to prune him quite short and try to obtain a more compact shape. Remember, Adenium sap is toxic so wear gloves just to be sure!
    Also I decided to repot him into a clay pot, which will keep the roots a bit cooler in the heat of the summer. I also raised him a bit to promote a thicker base (think it's called uproot) we shall see how that goes.
    So far the roots look good and the new branches green. We will see how this guy will perform.

    I have an Adenium and I live in South Florida in Zone 10a. The plant loves water in this climate and sun. I water it every 5 days otherwise the leaves turn yellow and drop off. From December to February I water it every 10 days. :)
    I love your videos as always and look forward to watching!

      Hi, I noticed that with mine too, he likes to be watered more frequent than a cactus, at least mine does. After watering more frequent he started to produce nice glossy leaves :)

    I'm so glad you are doing adenium. one thing I would recommend is a little bit of cinnamon where you cut it.

      Luke it a 50/50 according to how you treat the piece of plant also if the piece does grow there is the great disadvantage of not getting the massive caudix which makes this plant look awesome yet beautiful

    I w plenty water it after repotting. They like being stressed out so wait about 4 days depending on the size of your pot. When they are stressed they will retain water which will result in a thicker trunk and even flowers.

    That soil was pretty moist. Be careful with water. Dryer the better. When in bloom water more. I use orchid mix.

    Thank you for your video! The only thing missing, I think, is applying a heavy coat of cinnamon on the cut to avoid any bacteria infecting the plant. What do you think?

      I think in the wild where they first thrived did not have cinnamon powder and other such powders.

      I was waiting for the cinnamon. If water gets into that part of the plant it will rot

    • @michaelkeele8077
      @michaelkeele8077 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That and the fact she shouldn’t water within the first 7 days after repotting, especially with the media already being moist. That only will increase the percentage of root rot during its recovery time.

    • @michaelkeele8077
      @michaelkeele8077 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PapaOsmubal.OscarBalajadia yes, but they are no longer in the wild when in cultivation. So as responsible owners we have to make up for the missing things nature would provide.

    Hi Danni, just prune the damaged part off the top of the cutting. If it was rotting make sure you cut all the way down until there is only pure white stem,
    no brown rot left. Don't forget which end is up though if both ends are cut lol. While it will take a long time a cutting can grown fat roots and have an interesting base also. I have a cutting a few years old planted in a shallow pot that is getting some very interesting fatter twisty roots. Good luck!

    • @MissOrchidGirl
      @MissOrchidGirl  8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Danny,
    Thank for info. I also repot in clay (terracotta) pots like yours. 17 cm upper diameter but a little short and with large base. For a better stability. The only difference is in Seramis pebble dimensions. I ordered from Germany and was disappointed by quality. They shipped in ordinary plastic bags like send me their rests. Amazon UK don't ship to my place.
    Have you a nice day.

    • @MissOrchidGirl
      @MissOrchidGirl  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, where di you order from? orchitop has them in normal plastic bags yes, but that is because the normal bagged seramis is smaller. They have an exclusive product for seramis and is the one I use, the bigger granulated one.

    Hi sis Dani, the cutting of the adenium stem can be planting in another flower pot, then you will get another plant. Usually I will do it like that when I cut the stem. When the stem establish it will has it bloom also.

    How come you did not put cinnamon on the cut and then it has to stay without water so it can dry out and then you put the wood glue on it and let it dry out. you cannot eater the plant right after cutting it.

      Agreed! Once the cut has dried it should take root quite easily and after some months produce more of those beautiful blooms. I have read that cuttings do not grow the bulbous base like your original, only seed-started Adeniums do. But more flowers is always nice, right?

    danny, i have two terribly sick phalenopsis. one got an inside crown rot (first i notice some dots on the orchid leaf, i cut them and put cinnamon by the cut are) after two weeks the leaf fall, in the stem i had notice a dot before the leaf had fall(the newest leaf) after it fall i notice the leaf was rot on one side(the second newest) i put hydrogen peroxide every two days. for week and a half at the damaged are. three days ago two other leafs began to die the oldest and the third oldest(yellowed). i notice the second leaf was a bit curved to one side(i push it up and it wasn't attach to the stem) it was very green but out side the plant. this was the one with the rot. the orchid has only one leaf. i don't think it will survive. the damaged leaf (green)had a worm like organism that wanted to scape from hydrogen peroxide. the crown rot was only visible until the newest leaf had fall. i have a similar problem with other phalaenopsis which has a floral keiki that has been there for about month and half and hasn't produce any roots. the mother plant had a not visible crown rot with the same worm like organism. what should i do with the keiki to save it, it has no roots

    • @MissOrchidGirl
      @MissOrchidGirl  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh my sorry to hear :( I don't know what this worm like thing might be, maybe a caterpillar? I think that you really did everything you could, usually the combination between hp and cinnamon gives results, unless we are dealing with a weak individual. About hp, there is no need for so many applications, better once and then cinnamon powder inside the crown. Make sure to remove all the water after a few minutes, as hp transforms into plain water after the reaction is over. About that worm though, do you have a picture? also some pictures of the diseased orchids would help me see better what's going on. just upload a picture to photobucket, flickr, instagram, imgur or g plus and share the link in a comment here, I'll take a look :)

      +MissOrchidGirl Was wondering if you needed to use anything to dress (seal) the wound (cut) against infection. Though I have a potted Desert Rose, I never pruned it nor was even aware of the sap until you mentioned it... so I did not know if you used some form of protection after the video; like wax or pruning paint... Mine remained small even though it's 20-years-old and has been in the same pot all those years... :)

      +John Benedict ORCHIDS Now I read further down the thread and realized your plant is maintained indoors... as I was under the impression from your first video that it was going to be in the garden where rain would get on the cut, but not the case here, I guess, since you said you will not get the cuf area wet.. :) If I misunderstood, please do not even bother to respond; not important. :)

    • @MissOrchidGirl
      @MissOrchidGirl  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oooh ok :D no I didn't use any sealant because this plant doesn't get water on it :) it is on my terrace but it doesn't rain here almost at all in the summer so we are ok. I also water it myself with a watering can. I think some people do use a sealant, but it depends on what you know will happen to the plant water wise.

      Simon Smith ... are you keeping up with fertilising your desert roses Simon? They like to be fertilised every fortnight with either 5 in 1 or Powerfeed liquid fertiliser or some sort of liquid fertiliser ... It also depends on your weather (if it's dry, hot, rainy, not much sunshine and so on) ... sometimes they can take a little while to flower, but one thing to remember is not to over water them as they will get root rot. Also just by looking at a plant, you can not tell what colour it's going to be ... I've got over 270 desert rose plants and I can never tell what colour they're going to be until they flower ... I hope this helps out a little ... Cheers 🕊

      I only ever lost 1 plant and that is due to a bad graft which resulted in total melt down when water reached the graft spot. Whenever pruning adeniums becarful to not let water on the cut area as (very rarely) it may cause plant to melt down. This is just caution to not losing a plant

      also you don't need to see fresh growth any where to prune. I prune me adeniums hybrids at that and they send out there own new growth afterwards. so off you feel to prune you can but DON'T over do it or do unless you are training your plant
