Great video! I have the first 12 issues of Dual Magazine that featured VOTOMS, from the 80s. Great model builds, dioramas, show art...even strategic simulation boardgames!

Absolutely love videos like this! Although they make me sad that American hobby stores don't have selections like this, especially with Dunbune and Xabungle kits. 🤣

Agghhhh! That Megazone Garland! If I had found that kit in Mandarake Akihabara when I was there this past February, I would have picked it up without a thought! It is so expensive to try and get it and import it here in the US.
    Thank you for sharing!

@@pixxellie I was also in Shibuya but had no idea there was a Mandarake at that location as well! So sad. A missed opportunity. I'll bet that Garland was still at that shop when I was there too! :(

Thanks for this - I love these model shop videos (the slower the better and great to see the prices - that Zelena kit is over $60 in the UK!). I used to buy Hobby Japan on a monthly basis back in the late 80s - the colour pages are fantastic but, for someone who can't read Japanese, there's a lot of black and white / text page padding.
BTW - Votoms are massively underrated!

    • @pixxellie
      @pixxellie  21 วันที่ผ่านมา

The hobby Japan mook books are great because they basically trim out all the text from the magazines to make a book of nearly 100% photos.

My apologies if someone else has already elaborated on this, but yes SF3D are the OG Hobby Japan Ma.K kits made by Nitto. The pronunciation is an onomatopoeia in Japanese; SF for "Sci-Fi", the number 3 being pronounced as "San" and the letter D said with the "Dei" pronunciation, becomes a word pun for Sci-Fi San Dei "Sunday" since most modelers would enjoy the hobby on their time off on Sundays lol. Don't take that for truth as it may just be hearsay in the community, but it's pretty nifty if true :) The SF3D/Ma.k stuff is awesome, truly fun little kits. Heads up to anyone looking to build them, the SF3D PC joints will likely crack due to their age, and may require more seam-line removal rather than the modern Wave/Hasegawa Ma.K kits.

This is true as you explained. Comes straight from the mouth of Yokoyama-Sensei’s mouth. The boxings that @pixxellie showed in the video might be vintage, but not necessarily. Several of the older kits have been reissued in recent years with the old box styles. I didn’t pay close attention to the boxes themselves to tell if they were newer or older, but anything newer should (I think) have the Kow signature or a Ma.K logo in a corner or somewhere…even if the box style looks like the old kits.

Thank you for the wonderful content. These are honestly some of my favorite kind of videos the ones where you go out and you are just shopping for model kids and even if you buy the name don't it's still such a fantastic experience. 😊 I think what personally draws me to building.A kitt is always the box art.A box art can really capture the model and the mobile suit in a way that makes you really want to try it out.

    • @pixxellie

thank you for another great video! im making a list of all the cool shops you've covered for my eventual trip to japan.
would you ever consider doing gunpla tutorials? i ask because i loved the showcases you've done with your previous work, and would love to learn how to level up my gunpla game. so far i only know how to waterslide and panel line, and i feel intimidated by airbrushing, panel scribing, etc.
either way keep up with the awesome work!

thanks for making these videos! nitto was the first to make SF3D kits so those are vintage (later kits are called maschinen krieger not SF3D for legal reasons) - kow yokoyama's book "two factory" with kobayashi is super highly recommended too! mandarake had a shop in santa monica USA briefly, but i was a broke college student back then. it was about 10 years too early, a mandarake in manhattan or santa monica would absolutely slay now

what the heck, that glimpse of 'stargranger' looked so cute now i must research! I have a question; do you have a technique for looking inside the magazines? I gambled a few times buying books based purely on cover designs, until i realised i could ask at the counter to look inside. Was super awkward having to hand everything back though because none of it tickled my pickle (> w < )

SF3D is the original name for Ma.K. Nitto is the first to manufacture the model in the 80's, and then due to copyright issue the series is not manufactured. In late 90's/early 00's and series was rename Ma.K and manufactured by Nitto once again. The current Ma.K models are mainly manufactured by Wave and Hasegawa. So those model kits using the name SF3D in the video should from the 80's. I am not sure the one manufactured by Wave, because I did buy a Fireball SG in the early 00's that is manufactured by Wave. I am going to Tokyo tomorrow and planned to go to Shibuya on 15 and Akihabara on 16.

Thank you very much for sharing this wonderful video! Although I must admit, it was quite short 😭. I would greatly appreciate it if you could revisit the store once more and spend as much time as possible exploring all it has to offer. Regarding the Ma.k kits featured in the video, it's worth noting that those made by Nitto are considered vintage, dating back to the 1980s. In contrast, kits produced by Wave wouldn't quite qualify as vintage. On a related note, I recently purchased the new Abitate F44B Tequila Gunner in 1/72 scale, along with almost all of the older Tequila models and most kits from the same series, "Fang of the Sun Dougram." I'd love to see another extended tour with a more in-depth exploration and showcase of the store's offerings. Thanks again.
