I agree that iPad is more of a companion device not a replacement. I agree paying 1500 dollars for iPad Pro is stupid. But I think Austin is in a tech bubble of what iPad use case really is. Being able to edit, write, take notes, and draw with the iPad is still the best and necessary for some people’s work. Until apple makes a 2 in 1 touchscreen computer (which they probably won’t), ipad is still vital. iPad is still the best companion device

    • @sodapone
      @sodapone 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

They won't - Apple hates the compromises that'd be necessary to make a 2-in-1. Think about all the boneheaded UI changes Microsoft keeps making to Windows; they do that because they need to make Windows easier to use for touchscreens, and oftentimes UX design choices for touchscreens are at odds with UX design choices for mice.

I personally love that the iPad is not quite a two in one. I love just detaching the screen from the keyboard when it gets in the way of reading or drawing. I had a two-in-one and it worked really well but the ability to detach it entirely prevents me from going back.

I agree. I watched so many iPad reviews where the reviewer for some reason feels the need to focus on the fact it doesn’t have pro editing software. I mean yeah, it also probably doesn’t have pro CAD or architectural software.

Ok this subject I have to comment on. I’ve been working in tech support for years and have worked with so many older people. They think iPads are a laptop replacement. Like Austin said it isn’t. So Austin is right. People think iPads are replacements for laptops and when they go to certain sites they run into issues. Nothing to do with being a tech enthusiast. I feel like it’s quite the opposite. People who are trying to make things convenient and easy by just using an iPad are the ones who suffer because they don’t realize it just doesn’t cut it and just is not a true replacement for the laptop.

It can be though. I have a professional work flow and it works. Safari does force websites into a desktop version in the app settings. The thing is that it isn’t a replacement for everyone but CAN be a replacement for the people that want it or can have it be one.

I have used the iPad Pro as my main computer for 5 years and I haven’t run into a website that doesn’t work on it for at least 6 or 7 years. I sold my Mac 5 years ago because I prefer the iPad for music production. I started using GarageBand and some features have limitations compared to other programs on the Mac however the tradeoff is worth it for touch and the portability.

Mate, I don’t know why you even bother trying to justify your thoughts by giving useful real-world experiences from your *actual personal experience* (not just theoretical examples).. Austin is one of the people who believes his opinion is the dominant opinion. Of course, it’s good to be confident in your own opinion, but I just wholeheartedly disagree that the iPad is in a dead spot. The wheels are in motion with the M1+2 processors, important to note that these are they same silicon as used in their other machines. More and more pppl are attempting to use them as computer replacement and the changes in the iPadOS are symptomatic of this. I would also disagree that they have marketed it as a desktop replacement/computer replacement. They are jus two ridiculously wealthy.. that they can be theoretical in their marketing approach, letting ppl play along, whilst remaining in main control of the direction. It’s a theoretical rhetoric, the complete opposite of the MAC VS PC ad campaign they used those years ago. So I completely disagree with Austin’s point about that. Entirely.

Not much else needs to b said than you did there, iPad never been even marketed as laptop replacement, pro versions a more extension that work well between Mac and iPhone.
Their stream they did could been done through an iPad as well edited and be just as good but faster if one use 2 devices of course.

Well a new channel for me and was nothing enlightening at all, though I agree pricing is on a hard place on some models.

I agree that iPads and tablets in general are rather the companion pieces instead of the main devices. I use mine to watch YT and Netflix, take work meetings (the camera is much better than on my work laptop), read books and comics, draw, make notes, and browse the web.
I actually loved my iPad mini 4 to DEATH (just as I loved my iPad mini 2, but I killed its screen by removing its old case and not having the new one ready the same day) - and I would still continue to use my Mini 4 if it wasn't for its poor battery life after a long time of daily use.
And I was going to actually buy the iPad mini 6 after the refresh when I discovered that the version I actually wanted (256 GB, 5G - I always get the cellular version) - actually has the price of a base model MB Air M1 in my country, especially with the purchase of an additional pencil and a new case - BTW, it used to be a LOT CHEAPER for the older versions to get a reasonable mini model.
I decided against the mini 6 and I actually switched to the Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 - and I LOVE IT! The included s-pen, the multitasking, the bigger (but not too big) screen - and even with a case it was cheaper than the iPad mini 6 I was eyeing to buy!
I definitely agree that people at Apple should actually consider making the iPad line a lot simpler. And I believe all models should have a ready cellular connection in the base version, with a bigger difference in price between the models. In my opinion, it would be logical to maybe have them in mini + Air + Pro versions - and that's it. The current lineup is too convoluted, pricey, and usually just doesn't make sense.

The iPad can work as a perfectly fine computer replacement, it just doesn’t work for people in the tech space who do a lot more with their computers than normal people.
My iPad has Microsoft Office, can download movies, browse the internet, and works with filing taxes. That is all I need it for.
Edit: I primarily used an iPad Pro 10.5 from 2017 until a month ago when I updated to the most recent (as of September, 2023) IPad Air. I updated it solely because it was on sale and had the M1 in it.

It can be a laptop replacement, but a iPad Pro just does it worse for more money. I paid 600$ for a iPad Air with a 100$ apple pen and 200$ keyboard case so I spent 900$ for a worse version of a MacBook, the MacBook Air is only 750$ on Amazon and a base iPad Pro is 800$

      @roperaustraman4445 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@johnpoe3012 I think a big difference is you are comparing what you spent buying expensive accessories versus someone casually entering the market. In 2017 the iPad Pro 10.5 was $650 and the MacBook Air was $999, I didn’t need an Apple Pen and bought a keyboard case of Amazon for like $50 so it was around $700. The iPad Air I bought in September 2023 was $500 and again the case was about $50, that still ends up giving me everything I need a few hundred $s below the MacBook Air.
I do agree if someone is willing to or needs the extra features it is worth it to get a MacBook, my point was more that an iPad works fine, isn’t price prohibitive, and they last a long time.

The main magic off the iPad is when it’s used naked - no keyboard, pencil or for that matter a case! It’s just an amazing display that’s light and direct. Apple never intended the iPad to replace a mac , it’s a quality of life improvement in certain categories.
I love using my iPad 11 inch - it’s the ideal weight, the multitasking is on point and it’s fast. Love reading, watching content and occasionally drawing and note taking on it. I was excited when they introduced the Magic Keyboard but soon realised that it’s stripes away the main essence of the iPad. Honestly I feel the only iPad that should be allowed to have a keyboard is the largest model.
The 11 inch is just perfect! Is synonyms to burger melting in your mouth expect here it’s the iPad in your hands
Its fundamentals sound and as years go by can morph into anything your life needs - for being a notebook/sketch book, amazing media player, best possible mobile gaming machine to best kindle there can be, best place to browse your photo albums and music. It’s just an amazing screen- first appreciate that. It’s a quality of life improvement and now a days it’s worth the cost since so much of our lives are digital. Your wrist, your eyes and your back perhaps will appreciate it.
Next, it’s extremely compatible with your Mac. This is new and is still work in progress. There is a certain movement in freestyle creative apps are are starting to rise- a scrap book kind of aesthetic- that’s iPads forte and post processing can then be done on the Mac.
I’ve also noticed that each size of iPad has a certain implicit multitasking gestures that are suited best for each respectively while still being available in all. I think somebody need to dwell into that more. The 12.9 is not the best iPad anymore in my opinion it’s the 11 inch pro - extreme light, fast and nimble

For me, my iPad Pro suits my use cases very well. As a student, I find myself using the Apple Pencil alot. That’s my use for it, Apple pencil, g docs suite and microsoft’s suite, plus entertainment on the side. I don’t edit videos on the go (and actually I don’t like editing videos anywhere but my home) but when I do need to edit videos I have my windows pc for that.
However, I do agree that the iPad does need some sort of a more desktop mode that you can switch to anytime like Samsung’s Dex. That’s for a very specific set of power users, but if Apple wants the iPad Pros to be a laptop replacement then it needs a feature like that. Not everyone will use it but its good to have that feature available for when you need it.

From the perspective of a student, an Ipad is great as a primary device. Since most of what you do is in a browser and the respective apps, (which works fine, quite nice not to be only in a browser tbh) while having super low friction in terms of being able to both write and type notes, annotate as well as write essays is great. At the end of the day, though, it’s just super easy and more importantly fun to use, with the versatility calling back to the low friction and fun to use aspect. As an all in one device that matches with your iphone well, honestly i’ve not seen an issue really yet 🤷‍♂️

My current job works out of Microsoft Office suite so honestly my work issued laptop could not be replaced by an ipad nor is most of my work compatible with ipad if I work from home. But we have designers in the design department who’s workflow is ipad heavy. And the most they need from the microsoft suite on a daily basis is their outlook email and teams, which they can add as apps.
There really is no universal answer. Some people can work and just own a tablet/ipad without hiccups. Heck, my ‘personal’ laptop is currently a chromebook and for my independent creative (non office work) and at home needs it covers me just fine. A year ago my life and job was very different and I needed a full on laptop.

$600 Flex 5 will do the same stuff a lot better. And when you're done with that, you can do some light gaming or edit some video. Tablets are literally a pointless market segment. Some legit use for business and commerce but most people are just sacrificing a bunch of features either to have something a little thinner or, more probably, people buy an iPad to look cool and just settle because a tablet from Apple costs what a laptop does from any other manufacturer. It is the Apple device they can afford and they buy that instead of buying the device they actually need. Then they go on YT and sing its praises because they're just desperate to validate their objectively poor buying decision.

    • @alejorag

@@SomeOldGamers A $600 Flex 5 will NOT handle a DAW better than an (admittedly more expensive at $800) M2 iPad Pro by any measure. Also, that's why I said it is a niche product, I already have both a custom built desktop and a Macbook, I did not "settle" for an iPad, I got it to make music on the go and to use it as a portable second monitor (among a few other things). There's a whole lot of assuming in your comment.

When it comes to iPad I've only used the 12'' 3rd gen Pro version with the magnetic Apple Pencil. It holds up pretty well and I hardly use it as a companion device. In my use case I used it as a photo editing device(photoshop, Affinity Photo, Lightroom, Linearity Curve) and I used it as a (4K) video editing device with a mouse and with drawing I used the pencil. Apart from the horrible Apple files-app integration it performed pretty well. As a leisure device I use a Samsung tab A device and I've recently gotten an Oneplus Pad with keyboard. I'm not planning to use it as a full blown drawing device but with this device, I see more of a companion-like experience. I can edit 4K with proxy but I wanted to use it purely for small projects and as a travel size device to do some editing on the go. I also find the filesystem on Android devices easier to handle at times.

I found a brand-new iPad mini for dirt cheap a few weeks back and I'm honestly really loving the form factor. I mainly use Samsung devices, so it's been interesting learning about iPad OS fatures and functionality after not using an iOS device since the 2nd Gen iPod Touch back in the day. If anything, it really makes me with there was a good Android tablet in this form factor that didn't skimp out on performance. Closest thing would be the Legion y700 and even that is quite a bit larger due to the aspect ratio. There are also the folding phones but the price + potential durability issues are big concerns.

I can have a dual monitor setup if needed and if not I can easily pick up where I left off on the other device. I also decided to get the Pro versions of both because I previously had a Windows Surface Book and at times it would lag, so I was tired of that and yeah not everybody would need or use all the capabilities of the Pro versions, but some would. I believe getting either one is great and they can be used perfectly fine by themselves but the experience is enriched if you have both, at least for those that can afford it.

My number one complaint with the ipad eco system is the pointless complexity with pen support and app support it's always felt very akin to the 3DS and *New* 3DS where because they put a bit more of a stronger chip in the newer ones suddenly you're locked out of being able to use an app AT ALL on the regular ones. I had a mini 3rd gen, back in 2014 which is what got me hooked on ipads and my current one is the latest mini which I got day 1. It is absolutely a companion device. I'll use it for media consumption, starting artwork while on the go and then have my Zephyrus laptop for when I need proper PC programs and Word to type up documents, and then at home the gaming PC for the heavy stuff. More advanced drawing applications, 3D modeling, and Unreal Engine.
