Hello there. I'm new to bonsai. I've seen quite a few videos of people doing trunk chops and never really understood why they're doing it. When people do trunk chops like this, does that usually mean they are satisfied enough with the thickness of the trunk to start developing the branch structures and ramification?

In indonesia we called it serut and its not sandpaper as we known becos we have another tree that called amplas tree(mean sandpaper tree) and we have amplas putih and amplas hitam(mean sandpapaer tree white and black)
