Thanks so much Devin. Dont be so hard on yourself! That last one was epic too! Also this is and the other video in the package is the ultimate guide of Clouds for me, a guide to not get frustrated. Clouds had been a missing lesson on my art career. Coming from the world of comics (line) and jumping now to concept art for videogames and such, found painting clouds as hard as painting a an apple studio. I always get so messy and muddy when I try to take shapes seriously. Im going to try harder to study with your great advices and with some references, and see if I can be friends with the cloudy fluffy skies. Thank you!
It totally makes sense that clouds would feel especially challenging for a line-heavy artist! They're about as far as you can go in the other direction! I don't have any video content about this, but maybe I should - it can be valuable for people who struggle with clouds in this way to try painting some clouds with hard edges first! You can learn a lot about cloud shapes & color transitions by doing hard edged color blocking / shape blocking studies first and then slowly transitioning those into softer edged studies. It may make form creation feel easier, and most digital smudge tools are powerful enough to blend out hard edges after the fact. Best of luck!
Your brushes helped me SO much through getting my biomedical art degree, I just have to tell you! My BFA thesis project was about bobcats, and my illustrations wouldn’t have been nearly as realistic without your incredible fur brushes. I am so excited to have even more amazing brushes of yours to try! Thank you always
Wow I just found your channel, and you have restored my hope in this animation industry and my place in this world as an artist. You are a really good mentor, and a very generous one at that. Thank you!
I don't really like my clouds yet, but I feel better knowing that you are experiencing some of the things I am too. I'm going to keep painting clouds until I have a study I love. 😊
I appreciate your brush pack, used it just to give a background some juice (prior to watching this and using brushes at random to try them out) and it lended some serious gravity to the otherwise amateurish piece that I added them to. At many, MANY points throughout the studies you did in this video I thought to myself how happily I could have called each one finished, and then you only went and made them better with each addition!
I'm really happy to hear they've been useful!! I also love watching other people do studies for the same reason, I think we all see different things in the reference and can learn from each other!
amazing studies! I'm doing a world building project that will have me explore environments a ton. This is going to be super helpful for all kinds of sky paintings! I'm so excited! Thank you for the lessons, and the free brush pack!
Hello Devin, thanks for the video and the brushes. For some reason, I didn’t even know you had a TH-cam channel (one of the very rare occasions I’m glad TH-cam recommended me something) so of course, I had to subscribe. Keep up the amazing work.
Thank you very much for the brushpack. I hope 10$ is enough as I can't afford to give more atm. I'm very thnkaful that you were willing to share your brushes and your workflow! Have a really nice day.
Watching you draw,, makes me want to draw again... I left drawing because of my creative agency career... But tbh I always felt empty doing the graphic part only and leaving the drawing part.. I hope I get as better as you!
Thanks for this. Sometimes textures in my paintings look too "real" (and that includes clouds). The other day I was painting a wooden fence and nailing the realistic looking textures etc, but I hated it because it looks too real. So I had to start again. Sometimes when I am painting metallic things like pots it is tempting to use an airbursh but I'm thinking a painter using real medium wouldn't do that, as it feels like cheating? Any tips? Using a painterly brush on parts?
I think using some painterly brushes to break up the natural textures with some more artistic textures could be a really great solution! That is what I tend to do when I'm feeling like my painting is looking to uncannily real!
Holy crap you are an effective communicator. Everything was explained so thoroughly without being confusing or distracting.

Amazing studies! You're always soooo clear, thank you so much for both this kind of videos, your kindness and your wonderful brushes of corse ❤

Thank you so much for these tutorial/studies. I think your paintings came out much better than the original pictures, especially the last one.

stars shine brightest in the dark
the pretty colors in clouds won't look pretty without the "ugly" colors. you need both
I love your study videos and brushes, thanks for making these.

Just got the brush set! Great video, I can't wait to finally put my (way too many) sky photos to use :)
