    Good talk there Christian,
    I only collect the coins I dig up metal detecting,
    It shows the history of my local area where I live here in Oxfordshire England, so Iron age, Roman, Saxon, Medieval, Elizabethan, Georgian, Victorian etc,
    the best bit is finding a coin I haven't got yet.

    Almost my entire collection is from coin roll hunting. We were able to complete the early Kennedy half dollar book minus the elusive 1970. We’ve also completed the later Lincoln Penny book that starts in 1975 and almost completed the 1941-1974 book. It’s been a lot of fun as a new collector on a budget. We’ve found some foreign coins from our CRH and from coin machines, and that’s given us a taste of the world coins. Thanks for the new ideas for collecting!

      That's really cool! Infinite ways to do so. I like the Type Sets and actually just started doing folders for my penny hunts to see how much I can fill up a wheat penny folder with $1000 FV pennies.

    I personally don't understand those collectors who only collect coins from their own country, or those who only collect
    very certain coins just to make a complete set of that specific type.
    I myself collect every and all coins I don't yet have in my collection, no matter what currency it is, how old it is, or what it's composed of, as long as it's new to my collection.
    All coins from every date and denomination, as well as all commemorative coins.
    That way my collection will never have an actual limit, and my hobby won't come to a sudden halt. I don't ever need to ask myself questions like "now that I have collected every single American silver dollar, what will I do now?"

    • @TreasureTownCoins

      That's a cool way of thinking about it! Some good points. I like having some direction which is why I'm doing a full US Type Set - probably will never complete it!

    Knowledge is nice when you can use it to buy cheap, and use it again to sell high. It can kind of be thought of as another "premium", but one paid to YOU.
    Keep up the great job!

  • @edbooth946

    Thanks for the video. One way to collect coins that I like is to look for coins with ships or boats on them, or wildlife, or horses, etc. Yes, it's world coin collecting, but it has a theme, rather than just one from every country (which is a theme, too, I guess.) Just have fun with whichever way you choose to collect - you don't have to make money at it.

    I'm (slowly) putting together a 1942 collection. 1942 has my favourite penny, dime, quarter and half dollar designs. 1942 also has 2 different types of nickel and the major 1942 over 1 Mercury Dime variety. I'm also a Douglas Adams fan, so that might have something to do with it!

    For the past several years now, my numismatic passion has driven me into the direction of focusing mostly on and collecting medals.
    While medals may not necessarily be considered by some to be pure numismatics (exonumia is often the term used to describe medals), in my view I do put it into the general category of the hobby of coin collecting.
    Sure, I enjoy my collections of American circulating coinage, my ancients, and my modern bullion coins......but none of that has given me anywhere close to the enjoyment of collecting medals of various types.
    My medal collection is fairly diverse and significantly large and yet I have barely scratched the surface of the array and diversity of medals available to collect.
    I think medals is perhaps the most under explored genre within the general hobby of coin collecting; after all, compared to topics such as coinage of various types, I hardly see any focus on social media or in coin collecting forums on medals.......comparatively speaking. And in one way, that's actually a good thing because otherwise prices of medals would be considerably higher in the after market if there would be comparable attention given to medals.
    Now, why do I enjoy collecting medals so much more than coinage? Namely because, by-and-large, medals are generally so much more interesting and appealing design wise and in terms of commemorating or depicting historical events, important issues, or fascinating topics like aviation history, architecture, or accomplishments of humans as just a few examples.

    • @TreasureTownCoins
      @TreasureTownCoins  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is actually really cool! I agree though... sometimes we get some old Napoleonic medals in the coin shop and they are very intricate with great detail... so fascinating. Not something I've even gotten into whatsoever - would be interesting to know more about them though. Thanks for sharing... a really interesting comment to read.

    I was always told to collect what you like, even if you just buy one coin a year or just go to a bank and get rolls of change to find good coins at face value to put into coin folders. Once I made good money I started buying year and mint mark sets.

    • @TreasureTownCoins
      @TreasureTownCoins  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Probably the most important thing. Gotta have fun with coins. Only problem is some people spending money they don't have on coins that will not appreciate (or are overpriced) when they are thinking it's an investment.

  • @greghomestead8366
    @greghomestead8366 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I collect a few of the ways you mentioned. Let me add another...
    Metal detecting. Most copper coins don't do well in the ground, but silver most times comes out of the ground in the same condition as when it was lost.
    I enjoy your videos.

    Hey there, Treasure Town! I'm a fairly new collector, and I personally collect coins with some cool history behind them, no matter the face value, resell value, or even the immediacy of their story. Like, I have this pretty poor-looking Philippine peso (1997) that I recently got from a relative once I told them that I've taken an interest to coinage. It's a really badly burnt piece, and has little to no eye appeal whatsoever--you can't even see much of Jose Rizal's face anymore, and his name is completely gone--but its story is fairly interesting. See, in September 11, 2001, as America was hit with one of its biggest tragedies to date, my grandparents were monitoring the news 'cause we had relatives (at the time) who were in New York. They were so transfixed on the T.V. that they didn't notice that a small fire had broken out in their small mom-n-pop shop that was across the street from where they lived. Thankfully, the fire didn't erupt into anything too dangerous, and the store was okay--save for a small tin can where my grandpa puts aside spare change for various reasons. The can was half-melted, and almost all of the coins in it were either melted too, or disfigured too much to be of any use... except for a few peso that would later be passed down to other family members out of the belief that they were 'lucky money'.

    • @TreasureTownCoins
      @TreasureTownCoins  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a super cool story! I definitely think that there is something special about coins with family history behind them. I save a lot of the ones that have been passed down, even if there's no real extra value (or significant value).
