    At the start of life we put more ability points into intelligence, while other animals placed theirs in speed and strength

      Humans also put more points in endurance, that means that while we can't run as fast we can run a LOT longer than 99% of animals.

      +EH CBunny incorrect. Human beings are still the greatest distance running mammals on the planet. No other animal can come close to running as long as the top marathon runner can without needing to stop & rest. Tribes in africa still hunt this way, essentially running after an animal for 2-3 days until it dies from exhaustion. Properly conditioned humans can outdistance the best 4 legged mammal by a factor of 3 with ease. So long as the human can track the animal, he will run it down every time and win. The animal only wins when the human loses the track.

    It's actually pretty amazing how good humans are at endurance. But that said, we are actually pretty damn strong, too. Especially our legs and feet. Our feet bones and tendons are immensely strong, and our leg strength by weight is off the charts! Coupled with our natural resistance to diseases, our ability to heal quickly, and our brains...we're kinda terrifying.

    Here's how I see it. Every animal has its niche for survival, hawks have super vision, cheetahs have speed, gorillas have their strength... etc. but what makes humans special is our brains, and it has allowed us surpass every species on the planet. We take our minds for granted but no doubt if we were animals we'd probably be dying to be a human.
    Our mind is our niche ability.

  • @Hathur

    I saw a fascinating video by national geographic (i think) of a small tribe in Africa that hunts only with a traditional throwing spear. No bow, no javelins. They catch prey by using 3 men to pursue it. One is the "chaser", he runs & tracks after the animal and essentially chases until the animal dies of exhaustion. The other two catch up later to carry the animal back to the tribe. While humans are slower and weaker than other animals no other mammal can run as far as a human can without resting (that is, a properly conditioned & trained human). Breaks down to two simple factors - sweat glands. Many mammals don't have them and the few that do, no other animal has as many sweat glands as a human being. Thus we can regulate our body temperature much easier than any other animal and exert longer before overheating. A gazelle can outrun us easily, but it will have to stop and rest & drink much much sooner than a human will.. so long as the human can keep tracking the animal, he will eventually catch it within 2-3 days. The other factor is we can carry water. Even the earliest man learned to use waterskins made of animal bladders & stomachs to carry water. This allows us to keep moving and hydrate. All other mammals must stop and find water, frequently.. we can carry our own. Each time the animal stops (And follows a predictable path of finding water), the human closes in more and more for the kill. We win by attrition, not strength and speed.

    • @Jenovasreunion
      @Jenovasreunion 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      are you factoring carrying the water into that? that would be ungodly. And you're already sweating, so, there's no way you'd replace that water with what you were carrying. I'm still not convinced if the running ape theory in that humans would be much more uniform in body types, at least in Africa it were true. Stumpy weight lifter guys would never have been able to run down food. We have chimps today that have entered into a stone age. But those tools they're using are weapons, not shoes. If we are anything, it's weapon chimps, that fucked bonobos

    • @Hathur
      @Hathur 8 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Jason Sieckmann There is no question whether humans can run down other animals. Tribes in Africa are STILL doing it today (though less and less as their country ever so slowly modernizes, but they are still very much have tribal communities with no ready access to technology). Keep in mind, it is not being done alone - they utilize the other key advantage humans have over other animals - community, the ability to co-ordinate and work together in ways unlike any other animal can. One man is the chaser, the other 2 or more men are support carrying supplies and they follow at a slower pace far behind the chaser. An animal needs to run to a source of water to rehydrate and cool down (no sweat glands, they have to pant or immerse in water). A human can carrying a moderate sized waterskin to replenish some of the lost water and is also heating up 4x slower than any other animal. This isn't myth, it's proven fact that humans are the supreme distance runners. Yes we're immensely slower than any other mammal, but our bodies are vastly more efficient at cooling down, which is the ultimate factor in an endurance test as it is a body overheating (too much water loss) which ultimately causes you to stop running. Also worth mentioning that human beings hold more water per pound of body mass than other mammals - we have deeper reserves to draw upon when under strain.

    • @Jenovasreunion
      @Jenovasreunion 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Hathur I still question the running ape theory. Agrarian society predates not only modern society, there's a potential that it predates these methods of hunting. I just don't think that there is a uniform way to explain how humans obtained food at any point in history. Our varying body types may have a lot to do with this. Most people excel in some form of athletics and not necessarily endurance. So, either genetic predisposition for explosive and maximal strength bodies is a phenomena that arrived after this form of hunting or it existed at the same time for evolutionary reasons that don't fit this theory

    • @Hathur
      @Hathur 8 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Jason Sieckmann You're mistaken in assuming I or anyone else said that this form of hunting was the predominant method of hunting of early man. It was A way of hunting, for some humans. The primary method was clearly tool useage - the sling, spear, javelin and eventually bow. Groups of men would organize and hunt together to bring down a beast in swift time. But in some communities on the planet they couldn't or didn't use that method and instead used the endurance method. You forget that humans were a nomadic species far longer than we were a settled species. We spent the bulk of our existence wandering. It was only the advent of agriculture about 11,000 years ago that humans began forming settled communities. Prior to that we were great walkers, wandering endlessly in search of food, resources - never staying one place for too long. Our supremacy in endurance is simple genetics, there's nothing about it that is difficult to understand. We simply have sweat glands (or vs animals that also have them, we have thousands of times more glands than they do. I.e. a cat only has sweat glands in its paws.. a human has sweat glands over almost every inch of his or her body). That's all this breaks down to, the ability to regular body heat and cool down. An experienced human traveler can walk about 40 miles per day in a 12 hour span. An average human can do about 28 miles and a typical athlete can do around 32 miles. A gazelle can only cover about 18 miles per day in a 10 hour span before they have to stop for the rest of the day to cool down and sleep. The gazelle can run absurdly faster than we can, but it cannot cover the same distance per day and does not recover as fast as a human. No mammal can because they cannot cooldown fast enough for the simple fact they have no glands or not enough of them. And while 4 legs are superior for speed, they are hindrance for distance movement as they require much more energy to move. A bipedal animal expends energy much more efficiently, at the cost of speed.

    • @Jenovasreunion
      @Jenovasreunion 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Hathur your argument isn't komplex it's just repeating what was saved in the video. there's nothing I fail to recognize in terms of in terms of how Evolution played out. It appears to me that they are attempting to make an argument that humans evolved to represent these genes that allow us to have great endurance, that suggests the humans evolved to have predisposition for endurance and not other types of athletic capability. my easily understood argument is that uniformity in evolutionary priority is inaccurate. I'm not interested the tribes which most likely have interbred to produce their offspring produce similar types of athletic capabilities. regionally humans would have spent a great deal of time doing many types of things other than running or hunting. again it comes down to athletic adaptation mixed with genetic predisposition. not all people are genetically predisposed to endurance in fact very few people actually are and you start to cross a greater threshold of humans that have existed than just people who lived in that particular tribe in Africa. I would argue that many scientists were studying evolutionary biology May in some respects be out of their particular field when they're discussing athletic adaptation vs. say someone that's an exercise physiologist

    One serious flaw in the endurance hypothesis is the fact that we only started eating meat 2my ago. We only started hunting a while after that if anything we have more copies of the starch digesting enzyme than chimps so it makes more sense we evolved our endurance for finding starchy food. Hence why certain parts of our brains can only use glucose for energy.

In USA alone, considering the % of obese people, i doubt most can outrun a bunny even if it has a basket full of chocolate as prize, much less something with a decent amount of stamina...

    What do you mean if you ever raced a cheetah and are not named Usain Bolt, you'd lose? A cheetah, at 75 mph would leave Usain Bolt at 27.8 mph in the dust. It would leave most cars in the dust.

    Most animals run on all fours. If we grew up walking on all four Limbs, we'd be waaaay faster than we are now.

    I think a big dude who is proportionally well formed and has muscle power towards the explosive side (and a bit more muscle than average) could match a chimp very well (by which I mean: is able to keep himself alive)

      MikeProductions1000 body builders arentneccesarily that strong. Interpretend it like roads building a road ormuscle mass is harder than building electric generators your actual strenght. you need more roads for more generators body builders just build more roads simply creating more volume to their muscles a body builder is only a bit stronger than the average male or female

    chimp twice as strong than a human is proved to be a hype. their muscle produce similar strength (equal muscle mass) but theirs have more type 2 fibers whereas we have more type 1, which is way better in endurance and precise moves (like writing)

      Me too, I can relate. Most humans are horrible at running very long distances.

    I have another answer,
    It is because us humans were not designed to run fast or even walk.
    We were desinged to climb but that went out the window when we started walking with 2 legs

    Are you saying the average chimp is twice as strong as the average human or that a human sized chimp would be twice as strong as a human.

    *A lot of wild African tribes still hunt by chasing an animal untill it collapses*

      +Nathan Jones yep, saw a video of it awhile ago.. Was one of the most amazing things I've ever seen. Three men chased it down for 2 days. Only had spears, but they didn't even need to use them - they just ran after the animal until it fell over, dead from exhaustion since the human hunters wouldn't let it stop to sleep or get water.. and since humans can run longer without overheating or needing as much sleep, they just kept catching up and forcing the animal to keep running. Was awe inspiring to watch those three men hunt it and track it.

    We want to survive trauma, bullets? We build armor. We want to travel long distances that no animal can? We build cars. We want to fly? We build aircraft. We want to eat anything? We produce it in seemingly limitless quantities in an industrial food source. We have effectively conquered the hardships of nature simply with our intelligence. The most advantageous trait we possess as a species. We look up and wonder what it would be like to be a bird or a shark. But you have your intellect to thank for that thought process.

    We are not weaker. We have the power to move boulders and cars, our brains stop us from doing so. Our brain is concerned that we might pull or tear a part of our body.
