  • Freediving the Niagara II shipwreck under ice was on our minds for a while. Andrew Ryzebol and Geoff Coombs set out on an expedition to accomplish a goal they had set three years ago, to freedive the Niagara II under ice. After two unsuccessful attempts to locate the wreck in 2019, and a poor ice season in 2020, they finally became the first to dive (scuba or freedive) the Niagara 2 under ice. Lilly Ryzebol joined them to enjoy this amazing shipwreck under the ice.

      Thanks a lot Dan! Definitely took a lot to pull it off, especially with such a short ice window in this particular spot most years . Can't wait to go back!

    Subbed. This video's views should explode. One of the best concept videos I've ever seen for freediving. I've started a channel next door in MB and have 1TB of quality dive footage to edit so big things coming haha. There's more beauty in canadian lakes than people realize!

      Thank you so much Nolan! Really appreciate the kind words. Looking forward to seeing what you come up with from that 1TB of footage and upcoming footage 😁

    Horror. Darkness. Cold and silence. We need one slogan at the beginning of the video: watch this video to the end and you will get rid of claustrophobia. 😁

      The biggest things were developing our comfort freediving deep over a few years, then memorizing the wreck by diving it as much as possible in warm conditions, while in the winters developing our ice diving skills and comfort in the cold. Important to also do that with the same team members so everyone is developing the necessary skills (team is only as strong as it's "weakest link")

      How thick is the suite need for diving in frozen water? Other than climatized to the cold water, what are the other challenges of diving in frozen water?

    • @androopr
      @androopr  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      5mm is a minimum to be able to last for an hour or longer. 7mm is better.
      Safety concerns are the other big challenge in diving in the cold but too long to type all of the considerations, I could do a video one day on it

    Was your wetsuit 5mm thick or 7mm? Also is this total thickness or combined over the overlaps? (ie 7+7 = 14mm
