WELCOME TO THE 1980s Steering racks that were hard to turn when cold were a thing for GM vehicles made 43 years ago (Chevy Citation; Olds Cutlass Ciera). I guess GM turned to 43 year old designs when making their EVs. (Failure was called Morning Sickness)
Yes it seems to be a common issue. I have a 2019 Chevy Bolt and mine went bad at 34,000 miles. Dealership wanted $3000 to repair. Luckily my son knows his way around cars and he was able to fix it. He also did a TH-cam video on the repair. I think Chevy should do a recall on the part.
We just got another bolt EV with the same problem. But the rack was replaced just a year ago and it was paid by the sales department. Sent it back to Chevy for parts warranty but they declined it cuz it's been like a few weeks over a year. So I'll be doing another one on a different bolt.
Nice job. 👍 Back in the 90s owned a Pontiac Grand Prix 3.8L, especially on cold mornings, steering got very stiff, don't recall any clunking though. Had the rack replaced, then not long after sold the car and haven't owned GM vehicle since. Bolt steering issue reminded me of that vehicle. Hopefully repair will last a while for the owner. Stinks can't get new OEM replacement, though I imagine it would be significantly more expensive.
Probably AllData is 9.8 hours Canadian and ProDemand is 11.1 hours US. 😁 I just came across a used 2022 Bolt EUV, 47,000 mi, and spouse noticed the slop and noise. Boy are they glad they bought the 3rd party warranty, because the replacement was covered (minus $200 deductible). The dealership quoted about $2K, plus $50 extra because the insurance won't pay for an all-wheel alignment (only the toe-in) and for whatever reason the shop doesn't do toe-in only.
Just an FYI the bolt EV has a torsion beam solid rear axle and has no adjustment anyways you are basically only doing front toe adjustment only unless the rear is so far out you have to put alignment shims behind the backing plate.
@@theoffroadingmechanic Thanks -- I think that's been true on all the front wheel drive cars I've had! I suspect it has more to do with the equipment. Snap-On makes alignment machines in my town and the lasers etc. probably need to have the gadgets on all four wheels no matter what, so the shop charges you for a "four wheel" alignment no matter what. The insurance company is in the business of controlling claims so they agreed to pay something bizarre like "5/7" of the alignment charge!!🧐
I came here as im searching for problem with my 2017 bolt, at hwy speed i get a chatter as if a plastic spoke was hitting a wheel, the sound is coming from the steering column area and if i slightly turn the steering wheel it stops then comes back when i go straight again. its not constant.. it comes and goes but only at higher speeds above 60 mph.
Not to sure unless I have a the vehicle in front of me looking at the issue. But I can give you an educated guess. The steering shaft that connects to the steering rack is collapsible I'm thinking the grease is all dried up and is causing some slack. Kinda similar to the Mazda 6, Honda Odyssey, pilots, I'm not sure if there are video online about it but basically packing that shaft that has the U joints on each end with fresh grease that's able to shorten and extend.
If you've installed a WeatherTech floor mat and not fastened it down properly to the fasteners below the removable carpet, your steering column will make a clunking noise when the wheel is turned. The WT matt is rubbing against the steering column,
What are they quoting for labour and parts? I don't think there is a labour time for that mount on the rear. Mitchell only shows the left and right mounts.
We are a Honda dealership but I have replaced 3 racks so far on the bolts. I have also replaced sway bar links on one. And also found the steering shaft closest to the steering column pinch bolt backs off slightly causing play and causing a clunking noise.
We got a 70 cent raise which is below the inflation rate for this year. Lol The sales department is paying for it since it's within the 90 days and sales is also taking care of a rental vehicle.
@@theoffroadingmechanic It's been interesting learning about flat rate mechanics at a dealership. On the jobs I've watched you on, seems not fair many times. But, to use cliche, it is what it is.
@amrit10 was probably a used vehicle that got sold from their dealer and thd customer brought it back to the selling dealer, within certain time frames the sales department may cover it

I saw his video. It’s actually the first Chevy EV video I have seen worked on. He did a great job.

Brand new was around $450 cad at the Chevy dealer it didn't sound too bad.
Thank you for the video.

It's possible to drill and tap for zurt installation? Grease points.
my car is having these issues. Could you tell me the part number for the rack?
I put in a used rack no eta on a new rack due to the strike going on with gm. So don't have a part number.

@@theoffroadingmechanic Thanks! thats a good idea and something i can easily look at.

ohhhh now this i will check... i have a chatter noise at hwy speed. goes away if i turn slightly.
Is it hard to replace the rear motor mount?
Once you drop the subframe with it supported and a jack to lift up the motor the motor mount can come out fairly easily.
@@theoffroadingmechanic Thanks, I'm having a local shop replacing it. I hope it not too hard for them.
@theoffroadingmechanic The Local Shop is charging me $925 to replace the rear motor mount. Is that too much?
What are they quoting for labour and parts? I don't think there is a labour time for that mount on the rear. Mitchell only shows the left and right mounts.
@theoffroadingmechanic the part is only $60
The clunk on mine was from the swaybar link drivers side apparently that's an issue also

I wish they would just triple your pay and put you in charge...
So does the dealership bill for the "11" hours??
