Hello from 2022. A burglar (leaning on the steering wheel for balance?) broke my steering column. I had bits and bobs lying around and didn't know what was broken. I did test the key and found I couldn't turn the key in the ignition. I now know the bits and bobs were the solenoid/housing so this was very helpful and informative for me. Thanks for making this video.
great video. even as an engineer that specializes structural strength I'm always amazed by the amount of complex mechanisms inside machines we use daily and take for granted. An automobile is made possible by mechanical, structural and electrical engineering combined. Often times it includes computer engineering.
Nice breakdown and explanation. Some thieves trying to steal my airbag broke my ignition switch/cylinder and the security screws that hold it on. Probably used a crowbar. They also removed the electronic switch (held on by two screws) that activates in the starter on the start/on position. I knew nothing about my steering wheel column and ignition until now. Thank you.
I didn't have full coverage on a 17 yr old truck. I'll be finding an after market CAT+ Exhaust pipe, and pulling from a junk yard or eBay an Ignition Switch/cylinder or the whole steering column if I can find it
Very thankful for this video I had my 01 Camry stolen and I recovered it I’m fixing the steering column assembly because they broke the steering wheel lock this helped me understand how it should work thank you so much sir !!!

Thank you for this video. Been having some steering issues even after replacing entire front end, rack and pinion and intermediate shaft. Looks like i might have a bad column.

Some mechanic hammered the metal where the sensor nut lay (0:45) and caused the steering wheel to be stiff and grind everytime against the plastic it sits on. Perhaps the collapsible steering column got a bit shorter or moved ? is there a way to undo this ?
A superbd video. I am hearing a 'clunk' sound when I rotate my steering wheel all the way to the left or right in my 2004 Toyota Corolla. I still have steering control of my vehicle. Should I be concerned? I will check under my hood today for loose components there. My braking works fine. Thanks for any information. Peace.
The steering column u joints are very important because they're mostly there for collision safety. Without the u joints in a front end collision the steering column would shoot past the steering wheel and impale the driver. The ujoints are designed to break.
1)Is it possible to remove the steering column assembly without dismantling the steering wheel and the air bag, so that the whole assembly can be removed as one unit? 2) I'm able to turn the car off and remove the key while the transmission is not in the park gear. Is it just the solenoid you mentioned in the video that needs to be replaced, and can it be purchased by itself? What is the exact name of that solenoid? Thank you very much!
Hello @speedkar99 . I have Lexus GX470 2004 just recently bought at auction. It is clean car , running with no damage history. When I get to pick up the car , I detected that steering wheel is not turning the wheels. It is free soft turning either side with no respond from tires. But if I remove key 🔑, it is locking the steering wheel. It feels like steering wheel has been unbolted from joint or something. Also air bag sign on and when I turn steering wheel I can feel that wires inside steering wheel is ripped off. Can you please tell me what it may be before I disassemble all front of the car? Thanks
speedkar99 thanks! I found that my clock spring is damaged. All buttons are not working on the steering wheel, so it is definitely clock springs issue. And I saw that steering rod is playing free . Thanks again!
Once the security shear bolts are removed with a punch & a hammer: 1) Could the same ones be reused to reinstall or are new ones required? 2) To install the shear security bolts, is the method also to use a punch & a hammer, but in a clockwise direction? 3) To install the security shear bolts, alternatively, is it possible to use an ordinary bolt where a socket & ratchet could be used? 4) Why are those security shear bolts used instead of ordinary bolts? Thank you very much!
They can be reused. They're there for security...to slow down someone trying to hotwire the car. Of course since your doing this to your own car you can take your time, right 😉
The security shear bolts are "one-time use" and are fitted like regular bolts (clockwise rotation), the head is designed to break off when tightened with the prescribed amount of force. They are used as an added security feature to deter thieves from tampering with the cylinder assembly.....Yes, it is possible to use regular bolts but I would suggest sticking to the shear bolts.
Hi, I want to replace the steering column of my toyota corolla E120 D-4D (2002) which has NO telescopic adjustment of the steering wheel and I want to use a steering column from the later facelift model that has the telescopic adjustment.
