How a Steering Column Works

  • Here's how the steering column works to turn the wheels on your car.
The steering column connects the steering wheel to the rack. It also houses the airbag, controls for turn signals, cruise control, audio, wipers, ignition switch and steering lock, all of which are discussed in this video.
The bottom of the steering column is splined where it joins the intermediate steering shaft into the rack. A universal joint allows it to be mounted offset to the rack's pinon centerline.
Further up the shaft, is a collapsible portion that telescopes after a certain amount of force is applied. This prevents the steering wheel from being pushed up into The drivers face during a severe collision.
The steering lock consists of a tab that sticks out and engages a hole on the column, similar to a door lock. The mechanism disengages when a key is inserted and rotated, allowing the wheel to spin freely.
The ignition lock consists of a tumbler, the starter switch, a key detection switch and a lockout solenoid, all to ensure the off, acc, on and start positions of the key work safely.
Next up there's the turn signals, that use a cam-tongue mechanism that sticks into a rotating collar on the shaft. This allows mechanical self cancellation of the turn signal.
Finally there's a clock spring that allows 5 rotations of the steering wheel, while preventing tangling of the airbag and cruise wires. The steering wheel itself is a steel ring padded with colored foam, or is sometimes leather stitched.
This was performed on a 2001 Toyota Corolla.

great video. even as an engineer that specializes structural strength I'm always amazed by the amount of complex mechanisms inside machines we use daily and take for granted. An automobile is made possible by mechanical, structural and electrical engineering combined. Often times it includes computer engineering.

Nice breakdown and explanation. Some thieves trying to steal my airbag broke my ignition switch/cylinder and the security screws that hold it on. Probably used a crowbar. They also removed the electronic switch (held on by two screws) that activates in the starter on the start/on position. I knew nothing about my steering wheel column and ignition until now. Thank you.

I didn't have full coverage on a 17 yr old truck. I'll be finding an after market CAT+ Exhaust pipe, and pulling from a junk yard or eBay an Ignition Switch/cylinder or the whole steering column if I can find it

Hello from 2022. A burglar (leaning on the steering wheel for balance?) broke my steering column. I had bits and bobs lying around and didn't know what was broken. I did test the key and found I couldn't turn the key in the ignition. I now know the bits and bobs were the solenoid/housing so this was very helpful and informative for me. Thanks for making this video.

Also, the steering wheel endlessly turns in either direction (i.e., there isn't any resistance when turning... steering wheel will allow wheels/tires to continue turning beyond what they should). The steering column u joints are very important because they're mostly there for collision safety. Without the u joints in a front end collision the steering column would shoot past the steering wheel and impale the driver. The ujoints are designed to break.

So I was changing the driver window regulator today.
The bolts that hold the glass to the regulator stripped and it now spins.
I called 5 dealers and checked online and can't find them. :/
On this 1997 Lexus es300, when you mount the glass to the regulator it had a lot of play in all three fasteners. How does one align it perfect.
I am lost and need help.

speedkar99 If you ever come across it, it is very difficult to alright the bolts just right. There is so much play yo deal with.
I went to my local junk yard and no luck. This junk yard could be the worst junk yard in the world. The owner there said "we don't sell the bolts, you would need to buy the whole door" I was shocked and left never going back.
I called all the dealers in Atlanta and every single one hit me with " you can't get the bolts" which you can. I found them online.
But Thank you for your reply.
Lexus is easy to work on. But on this es300s, maybe others, when you install a window regular there is so much room to play to set the window glass just right.

    2) I'm able to turn the car off and remove the key while the transmission is not in the park gear. Is it just the solenoid you mentioned in the video that needs to be replaced, and can it be purchased by itself? What is the exact name of that solenoid?

Speedkar99, I just have a few questions. What do you with all the junk you take off this Corolla? How are you disposing of it?

Some mechanic hammered the metal where the sensor nut lay (0:45) and caused the steering wheel to be stiff and grind everytime against the plastic it sits on. Perhaps the collapsible steering column got a bit shorter or moved ? is there a way to undo this ?

Once it's collapsed there's no easy way to reuse it

Is it possible to fix the thudding noise from the steering column while the car moves through some rough patches. Since it is gonna cost a fortune to replace the steering column itself... Wud appreciate ur help

its kinda rattle sound from the steering column. actually I took experts advice earlier and got the steering rack replaced, but the problem persists sir. then they told me that its from inside the car under the steering wheel. EPS needs to be replaced too. but I am not convinced.

I am having a very similar problem. Some rattling from steering column when hitting bumps. Turning the wheel a few inches side to side also reveals some noises. Local dealer is recommending replacing the entire column which is expensive. Not sure if it needs to be done.
