The Remarkable and similar devices are made for a single or maybe 2 purposes: 1. Taking notes and 2. Reviewing documents. The reason that it does not support audio, video or installing of apps is that You do not want to be disturbed by music, pop ups and other annoying things. Backlight is also not supported as it will have a drain on the battery. I think that many users are returning it as they were expecting an all purpose device which it is not. I am buying it as i need to take notes for my work and i hate paper that gets all curled up and lost :-)
I was debating getting a scribe or Re Markable, but I ended up settling on my iPad Notes app. I have a Paperlike screensaver for it which helps with the experience. It's color, I can organize, sync, change handwriting to text, add pictures, draw, add grids, change fonts, import PDFs, and its FREE with my iPad!
The iPad Notes app with the Paperlike screen protector gives you that nice, natural feel. These features-handwriting to text, drawing, PDFs, syncing across devices-make it a powerhouse, and the fact that it’s already included with your iPad is a massive win. You’ve got everything you need in one place, and it sounds like it’s working perfectly for you!
Thanks, the video did indeed help feel me better about the reMarkable I just bought (20 minutes ago). I was starting to have second thoughts. But, I don't use kindle books so you actually gave me an extra pro to get the reMarkable. It is indeed expensive which stopped me for a long time from getting it. I'll admit though, I'm disappointed they have no backlight. So I guess I won't take notes in the dark and I'll be keeping my kobo reader as well for nighttime reading.
Thank you for your comment! I'm glad to hear the video was helpful and helped you feel better about your purchase. That lack of backlight is a disappointment for many, including myself. It seems keeping your Kobo reader for nighttime use will be a good complement to your reMarkable for now. I’d love to know how you get on with it. Happy note-taking!
I appreciate this video because I have been curious about the Remarkable but in my ignorance remained skeptical about its value to me, but watching this video clued me in on the Kindle Oasis and Scribe; that they may very well be the device I am looking for. I am heading over to your other video concerning these devices. I have had a Kindle Paperwhite for a number of years and have read extensively from these readers. Thanks for posting the video.
Thanks so much for taking time to leave a comment. I’m glad the video was helpful. It’s always good to hear other thoughts and opinions before you splash the cash isn’t it? I hope my other videos are as useful and please don’t forget to subscribe if you haven’t already 🤩 Let me know which device you ultimately decide to go for.
I don’t feel the paper feel with my RM2 but I am also not using their Marker. I really wanted the friction feel, but I don’t feel it. But I love the RM2. Got it refurbbed. 3rd party case and pen. I really want it to have that rough feel. Backlight don’t bother me cause I knew coming in that it wont have one. I have a bed time routine so I am switching to sleep mode around the time the sun comes down any way
Thanks for taking time to comment. Maybe the feeling of pen on paper is more subjective. Like I say in the video I thought it felt better in the remarkable than the Scribe and I’m a big Scribe fan! I didn’t think the lack of backlight would bother me but it really was the deal breaker for me.
My wife is going back to college and her birthday is coming up in a few weeks, do you think the remarkable two would be a great gift for her? She already has an iPad Pro with a pencil and she takes great notes on it. But I think the remarkable would feel like paper and a notebook for college.
Thanks for your comment. The reMarkable is a great tablet but, as I mention in the video, the lack of backlight is an issue - at least for me. I can only give you my thoughts which I have done in the video but I’d still pick the Scribe over the reMarkable.
Which is better, using paper and traditional writing in paper Or use electronic writing such as devices E-ink tablet to taking note and wiriting, I am confused and I do not know what to choose, but I feel that the old traditional writing is better What advice can you give me based on your experience ?
That’s a great question and honestly, it’s a tough choice! Both traditional paper writing and electronic note-taking with devices like E-ink tablets have their unique advantages. Traditional writing can feel more personal and tactile, while electronic writing offers convenience and easy organization. In my experience, it really depends on your personal preference and workflow. If you enjoy the feel of pen on paper and don’t mind organizing physical notes, traditional writing could be more satisfying for you. On the other hand, if you value having all your notes searchable and in one place, an E-ink tablet might be the way to go. Have you tried both methods to see which feels more natural to you?
@@mark_kelly Sorry for Late Replay Yes I Tried Both methods E-Ink and Paper but E-Ink is the best I have Onyx Boox Tab mini c I love it so much Thank You
What I would like is to buy books, preferably in Danish, and I would like to hear sound-books read on my device. I would also like to write my WiFi codes and call them out when needed. My wife bought a sound-book but was not able to listen to it!? My future reader should not have such a problem. The book has to arrive easily to the reader and "Play" by a press of a button! Which one should I buy??? Thanks for the wise review! Happy New Year!😊
Thanks for your kind comment. I’m afraid I’m not sure what to advise in this instance. Maybe someone from the channel’s lovely community might be able to chip in with some ideas? Happy New Year! 🥳
The lock screen is ad-free and can display the book cover of whatever I'm presently reading. Of course, it will suggest books when in the Home section.
Hi Mark! Thanks for the review. I bought a ReMarkable2 for my wife for Christmas and I own a Kindle Scribe (which is how I came across your channel) so I'll get to compare them side by side. I'm not much of a note-taker, having bought the Scribe mainly to have a large e-reader screen. I agree that the Remarkable2's lack of a backlight would tip the scales in Kindle's favour.
Hey Ron. Appreciate the comment. I hope she enjoys her reMarkable, loads of folks seem to love it. It just wasn’t for me. I’d be interested to hear what you think. Merry Christmas!
Really helpful, thank you. As an older person who writes a lot I'm looking for something to avoid more note books and diaries. Something simple for people not very PC savvy. Unfortunately I am not in love with Amazon, or the Kindle. I prefer the Kobo for an ebook. Carrying two devices would be fine. Did not know about the yearly cloud subscription. Back to the drawing board!
I think that you had just different expectations. Remarkable is just a paper-like note and we should think about it like about the expensive sheet of paper. Any other usability is just a bonus.
Thank you for your review. I already have a scribe and the remarkable's fake screen real estate was tempting. Thank you for saving me the frustration and time and money :-)
True. Still puzzled whether to buy it as I have iPad Pro but need a simple portable device for note taking. The problem is I can’t sync these with one note app
I have watched sooo many reviews for these Eink tablets. And it basically comes down to personal use-case and what you want the device for. To add a backlight to the Remarkable requires an extra screen layer, which takes the pen tip further away from the writing surface. The main point of the Remarkable is the pen-on-paper feel. So adding a backlight would prevent that. And as you said, for those who already journal or write on note pads, the lack of a backlight should be no issue. Just buy a clip-on book light. I have also seen the argument of buying an Onyx Boox because they want all the fancy features, but that just seems weird to me; just buy an iPad. 🤷♂️ For me personally, I love journaling, goal setting, and ideation, and have a copious amount of note pads and paper scraps in cupboards and drawers, so I’ll be buying the Remarkable. I lucky enough to already own a Kindle, and an iPad. So I just want a device that I can grab and scribble in that feels like a notepad, but syncs to my Google Drive.
Hey Jamie. Appreciate you taking the time to comment! Of course, you’re absolutely right, use whatever device fits your use-case for it, as simple as that isn’t it? We all have our differing thoughts on things but folks ultimately should get what works for them. I hope, however, my little offering helps in that decision making process. I take your point about the LEDs adding an extra layer, but I honestly can say I didn’t notice it. Amazon have done such a good job with the Scribe I didn’t register a difference between the reMarkable and the Scribe when looking at them both and it certainly doesn’t affect my writing experience. I also take your point regarding the Boox. I personally don’t want all that distraction (I too have an iPad for that), but some folks in the comments really want it to be the be all and end all - but again, each to their own and I respect their power of being able to resist distractions! What Kindle model do you own and what do you love about it the most? Happy New Year! 🤩
Hi Mark Yeah, I think you did a good review, and had some valid points. I have a Kindle Paperwhite. I’m a vivacious reader and get through a sci-fi or fantasy novel every couple of weeks. I like to be able to just download a book at the touch of a button, wherever I am. I’ve been known to download a book whilst on a train or even in a queue. Easy to hold with one hand, lightweight and not having to attempt to hold open or turn pages. (Lazy, I know 😂) The only physical books I have and read are non-fiction. I like to take notes on post-its and stick them in certain pages, and many of my non-fiction have graphs, charts, photos or various visual stimuli which just don’t work as well on a Kindle. And with non-fiction I tend to flip back and fourth through different pages to refer back to.
