So Family Crest came out in 2003, in Runescape Classic, and at that time, all the desert area south of Al Kharid didn't exist. It's one of those things where at the time of release, the hints in the text do the job just fine, but 20 years on, it offers barely any real advice
Ya but even then, the fact that you need to randomly speak to the gem trader first is dumb, and could leave you lost and wandering. Either the quest should tell you that he went to buy some jewelry in the desert (prompting you to go to the gem stall) or you should be able to spot and talk to the brother without the gem traders help.

For what it’s worth, the Gem Trader in Al Kharid was released the same day as this quest. A major issue is that Family Crest was released 9/4/2002 while everything south of Shantay Pass came out 14/4/2003 or later, so the clue of "talk to people in the desert" was a much shorter list of people, several of which were added in the same update. This is something that comes up in a lot of the older quests where they make some measure of vagaries about describing people and places and were never touched up to be more specific as the denser world now requires.
I saw the thumbnail and the title and *knew* I had to click this video. Scanned the world map in awe of this wild goose chase, but then remembered that I'd been through Al Kharid a hundred times and has always seen some noble-type gentleman in the mines, so I figured that must have been him. Talked to "Man", got the whole "I'm busy" dialogue. Examined him, and it gave me the same examine text as the other brother, so I was *sure* he had to be the right guy. Tried using Caleb's crest piece on him. Nothing interesting happened. Tried using a gold ore and gold bar on him. Nothing. Went back to Catherby, talked to Caleb again, then talked to "Man" again. The moment I saw shanty I knew this was gonna take forever. This quest is incredibly old. It was released before Uzer or polnivneach and Al kharid is part of the desert. (not sure if Shanty pass or the desert prison were released yet.) So I guess a tip is knowing the age of a quest helps with vague Quest dialogue. the older the more likely it is towards the F2P area.

The "desert" when Family Crest was released was nothing but Al Kharid, so narrowing it down was super easy back then. But now it's way too broad to reasonably solve it with nothing but the information the game gives you, you're 100% right about that. The entire problem could easily be fixed by just slightly updating the dialogue to specifically mention Al Kharid, instead of just "the desert," but I highly doubt Jagex would go back and make minor corrections like that, specifically because of the existence of online guides filling in those kinds of gaps. Unfortunately, that's a problem I expect you're going to run into again in the future. Jagex just doesn't really update quest dialogue for new additions to the game.
Exactly, if we think about it, almost no players are ever going to complain about it, and the change would likely require testing which could hog up to two developers for maybe 30-50 minutes. That's a lot of money in developer time. Not only for their salary, but how much money they could make doing something more important like bug fixing. Maybe if it was part of a bigger overhaul of changes to old quests. But I doubt that would be prioritized, and it's not like "the desert" is impossible to scour through, it'll just take longer. Not only that, but given how "beyond White Wolf Mountain" literally just means Catherby, the entrance to what is beyond White Wolf Mountain, it can reasonable be assumed that "The desert" also means the entrance to the desert. At least it can be inferred.
@@mikkoitasalo8940 Youve clearly never worked as a developer at an established company. A "simple" 5 minute change to the code requires a lot more time in bureaucracy. They would have to convince investors this is worthwhile and then poll it. A mass QOL update to old quests sounds much more likely.
@suparki123 lol investors are not involved in the minutiae of dialog fixes or minor code changes. A change from "desert" to "Al Kharid" would be something 90% of players wouldn't notice given most people use guides or plugins to begin with and Jagex has done way bigger changes unpolled before.
Oh, and quick tip that doesn't violate your rules: check the quest release dates on the info page! Family Crest was released in 2002, which means you could have quickly ruled out your theories about checking content from later releases like Tourist Trap (2003), Below Ice Mountain (2021), or Icthlarin's Little Helper (2005).
I'd actually prefer if he didn't do that so we can really see what an actual blind play through would look like, rather than using anything that's a bit more meta.
@@amorty456 The release date is available in-game. I don't see it as any different than, for example, looking at the Magic level requirement and realizing you have to use Fire Blast. The info page is a surprisingly useful resource for getting unstuck.
@@stephenberg6438 The average player is not going to look at release dates for quests. The average player isn't going to know when Shanty Pass was even released.
I look forward to your upload every week. Honestly best new series I've seen in quite some time :) "Right, that would have been a fairly straightforward quest if I didn't walk around the desert for two fucking hours." God that sent me to the moon
While the effects on your own sanity will vary, it is nice to see people appreciate everything that goes into these quests. Most people doing Tourist Trap just come in, bum rush the captain, then overlook everything about bribing guards and the nomads. Also when this quest first released they had to spawn multiple mercenary captains because everyone had to wait around for the one captain to respawn so they could do the quest. It was a lot like the lesser demon in wizards tower when leagues 4 released. That's also why there's multiple bankers in every bank.
This gave me similar vibes to when you were searching every single square meter of the f2p area for planks to repair the boat for dragon slayer. Sitting here having a blast. Thanks :)
and the weekend begins. well i have no idea why they have done that. might send this on to my mate who works there. when i watched you enter the wildy i got worried you would get lost again :(
First video I'm seeing of you. You will likely fill a lot of my bored hours at work. I love that you are actually figuring out the quests and getting the real, intended experience with the, the way I got to do when I first played the game. Compared to something like J1mmy's series, I think this focus on the quests themselves fills a gap that we as a community were sorely missing. Thanks for that!
As someone who just finished Mourning's End II for the first time, getting very pissed off the whole time in that light maze, this gave me some relief knowing that it could be worse. I wish you the best of luck when you get to ME2.
I'm convinced MEP2 will break him. He's incredibly dedicated but that fucking puzzle combined with the aggressive NPCs and the obstacles...I can't see that happening lol
@@JM-mg4el The puzzle itself is a fun challenge if you draw out all the temple layers on a piece of paper, with colours and everything. It's the shadows that make it so unbearable though...

I know others have said this but this is my favorite series on TH-cam at the moment. Thank you for all the hard work you put into this, it absolutely shows.
dude, loving this series. Youre great, love the format and you just seem like a really chill dude. binged your series while working the last couple of days and subbed. keep them coming :D
Came here after reading a discord suggestion post to rework some of the dialogue here. Definitely a rough experience, glad you got lucky eventually. Also crazy how at time of release "desert" probably just meant Al-Kharid but now it more implies the rest of the desert where you take damage.
Your rant is justified. The Avan Fitzharmon part is just stupidly designed :). It was just a lot easier when this quest was released. The entire Desert south of Shantay Pass did not exist yet.
Ironically, this actually is what I ended up using as a guide for Family Crest because I watched this before I had the requirements because I can’t stop rewatching the entire series so far!
I recently completed all the quests with guides, and your series makes me wish I didn't. Great editing by the way, the old f2p music in the background is such a nice touch.
Everyone is saying you should check release dates to narrow it down. For me I actually enjoy you raging about certain things (sorry) and it makes me so happy that you eventually get it. Thats what makes quests feel great to me, even if theyre poorly designed. If you would have 0 trouble than it would be less fun. Anyways great video! ❤😂

Love this series ❤ Makes me want to start a new account just to see if I can also complete quests without guides, but then I remember that Im not a masochist 😅 Keep up the great work!
ngl I'm enjoying watching somebody with no understanding try to figure out a quest without a guide, this is quite refreshing, even if you were way off course.
Highly recommend at least trying without the massive todo list of the quest helper. Try figuring out what the next step is. Go ahead and look up information for limited things. You don't have to go full "alien food" on it. But the quests are some of the best in the business. They do attempt to make it figure outable. They released Slayer specifically such that "kill 17 gargoyles for their tongues" quests can't exist. The quests are weird, yes. But that's why you play anyway. You are playing a medievel point and click adventure simulator game thing...Embrace!
I was very lucky when I did this quest unguided myself. I had noticed the man in the yellow cape several times during my visits to the mine, and his examine text mentioning him being noble had always stood out to me as odd. So when I got to that part of Family Crest, he was immediately who I thought of. And even though I was thrown off a little by being unable to talk to him at first, the gem trader was basically the next closest NPC to talk to, so it didn't take me long to resolve.
I just found out about your channel thanks to the youtube algorithm and I gotta say thank god for that! You have something unique from other rs youtuber that they can’t ever have: novelty! Seeing you struggle for NOT speaking to npc x-y-z is the exact reason I despite quest in general google it up 😅 But I hope you keep it up as it is super entertaining to see
Your frustration is valid. They actually changed this in the RS3 version of the quest! You no longer need to speak to the Gem Trader first, and his name is Avan, not Man, so you can just go talk to him. OSRS needs to make the same change.
This is awesome, I have always wanted to watch a video of the dialogue/story of all the quests, and almost went as far as making my own series but it looks like this series is just as good or even better then what i was making! I was going to put text to speech & try and match the npc’s dialog with a voice tho
Very entertaining episode, as always. Thank you. I think you forgot to label this as #29. I do like the numbers in the title because they help me find the next episode in the series.
I did some digging for you bro. Because that man questline was genuinely infuriating. It seems that Caleb previously mentioned that the gemtrader would have known more. The family crest quest is developed by gower himself, in a time where al kharid was all the desert there was.
Having playing this game for thousands of hours being maxed its so fun to watch you miss little things and struggling but in the end getting it. I am jealous of not being ever able to play like this.
You've already beaten a few quests that broke my unguided streak, so I was surprised this one gave you such trouble. Maybe it's just because I spent a ton of time in slumming it in f2p, but I immediately thought of the Al Kharid mine and found Avan very quickly. Of course what you did also makes sense in retrospect, it really is hostile quest design. He should absolutely not have different dialogue just because you haven't "asked around" yet. I can kind of understand what the dev must have been thinking -- there are a few other times you're supposed to do the RPG trope of asking locals for rumors or whatever -- but it was a bad decision. Don't worry, you only have like 5-10 more insane moon logic quests before they start getting more reasonable lol. I'm sure you'll feel Jagex's quest design improving over time, or at least shifting to "figure out the PVM puzzle" instead of "figure out the loony adventure game puzzle".
You are totally justified in being confused. My Fiance has been playing runescape since forever, and without watching the video i told her the title and what quest you were doing and she immediately called how bad finding him would be.
The moment the quest said about the desert & you put in for longer than you think.. I immediately knew I was buckling down for a wild ride 😂 it's funny as all hell, watching you pass the place you need to be and go off on a 2 hour long tangent
"Just give me like a mil, you must be fairly minted" 😂😂😂 I can't wait until you do Family Pest and find out just how minted he is! I'm binge watching this whole series after seeing you in the castle wars video with Chunk Yanille! It's great! Keep it up!
No you are totally right and you should make a forum post about this. I checked and when family crest was released, there was no desert south of Al Kharid. Outdated quest dialogue needs updating!
That rant is VERY valid. There could/should be an update to fix this. HOWEVER I think this is also another bit of evidence that you should stick to doing early quests first? Or something. Not sure. At least keep in mind where/when new places came to be. This is at least the 2nd if not 3rd time something like this has happened to you. As mentioned by others. The state of game as the quest was released was part of the quest. New area released, So you know where/who to talk to. It should be updated now after 20 years to help with exactly your rant. Add additional dialog to more people and/or fix "man" himself. But until then, you will just have to play by your rules...while being aware of just what parts of the map actually existed back when the quest was done. Which will be difficult i'm sure without...you know, the wiki to tell you. Oh well. Your pain is our entertainment. Explicitly part of this series. :P Also, he explicitly says the gauntlets are magical...so don't forget that. Obviously I won't say more. But that's on you to figure out. Oh. and for my little bit to add. In RS3 there is a sequel to this quest. You just bug the guy until he gives up and throws you at a problem. Can't be worse then him dealing with it. right? :P Oh, and RS3 is KINDA in the middle of fixing things like your rant. Going through all the quests and updating quest requirements to make more sense after 20 years of things. Like no longer needing Priest In Peril to do some of the quests in Morytania now that The quest is no longer the only way to unlock and to get into Morytania. Adding in dialog and making some referencing dialog or removing. It's a big job with 20 years of history, so it's going slow. Any idiots out there who think it would go fast have never had to deal with 20 years of history in a program. Yikes. Honestly kinda impressed with the single dude who's job it is really.
"For longer than you think pal" discovering it was the gem trader all along must have been simultaneously excruciatingly painful and a huge relief after aimlessly wandering beyond the shanty pass and half completing a completely different quest for over an hour
I also spent hours wandering the desert when I did this quest. I just didn't think of Al Kharid as being part of the desert. People tend to say you'll get stuck on something like MEP2 but I find any well-defined puzzle, no matter how difficult, is never as bad as something where there's a bad hint and massive scope for searching. The quests that come out now are so much slicker, well-designed, and well-hinted. But a sick part of me misses getting stuck for a while on the old ones with their weird logic, vague hints, and no respect for the player's time.
32:50 It wasn't to this extent but during the dwarf sub quest for recipe for disaster, the dwarfs father was actually named "an old dwarf" before you spoke to him and he told you his name. It then updated in the game after I believe. It at least updated in the quest chat
In retrospect it would've made a lot of sense when I was doing RS waaay in the day to do the sort of thing you're doing of "oh, this quest requires X smithing? I should probably make sure I have some bars of that tier and bring a hammer." I remember getting so much mileage out of the multitools from rogue's den.
Thank you so much for the generous donation!! Seriously means so much to me, I struggle to express my gratitude in a single comment back, but thank you! I’d honestly love if they changed anything, even a single tiny thing due to my vids, would be so cool.

I think if they just changed the dialog to "Al Kharid" instead of the desert it would be fine. If a JMod sees this video I bet they'd change it.
@@freshairkaboom8171 not true. They can just tweak quest log text/npc dialog fast into next update. Doesnt take longer than solid 5min of work.
Honestly best new series I've seen in quite some time :)
"Right, that would have been a fairly straightforward quest if I didn't walk around the desert for two fucking hours." God that sent me to the moon
Another Friday, another Unguided video. Makes the start of my weekends so much better. Thanks man, love the content.
Thank you for watching 🫡
While the effects on your own sanity will vary, it is nice to see people appreciate everything that goes into these quests. Most people doing Tourist Trap just come in, bum rush the captain, then overlook everything about bribing guards and the nomads. Also when this quest first released they had to spawn multiple mercenary captains because everyone had to wait around for the one captain to respawn so they could do the quest. It was a lot like the lesser demon in wizards tower when leagues 4 released. That's also why there's multiple bankers in every bank.
Can’t watch this because I’m not caught up yet but pumped that there’s a new episode. Gonna try and binge the rest of them!
I just started watching your series (love it) and finally figured out your outro song. The Rugrats theme song!
Haha that is similar!
I legit hoped you'd upload and checked when you last uploaded like half an hour ago lol
So glad to see uploads so often!
This gave me similar vibes to when you were searching every single square meter of the f2p area for planks to repair the boat for dragon slayer. Sitting here having a blast. Thanks :)
Honestly, so much commitment to fight your way through figuring out these quests. Very entertaining and impressive!
and the weekend begins. well i have no idea why they have done that. might send this on to my mate who works there. when i watched you enter the wildy i got worried you would get lost again :(
First video I'm seeing of you.
You inspired me to do the same, except I watch you before doing the quests. :) Currently working towards getting all level requirements done for doing all quests in a row. Keep it up man!
My man Alien Food bringing me yet another wonderful episode. Time to make some popcorn!
I know others have said this but this is my favorite series on TH-cam at the moment. Thank you for all the hard work you put into this, it absolutely shows.
Yay I get always so happu when I can watch these while trying to catch sleep
dude, loving this series.
Omg I love this series. Is anyone else screaming at the screen trying to help him figure it out lmao. Great videos man you are awesome
How am I just finding this series now, the patience is insane lol good job man!
I absolutely love this series, I've watched every episode within 2 days I cannot stop! Please keep up the amazing work Alien!!
Thank you so much for the kind words! I really appreciate the support
working through this series and I love it... the "Look at me! Look at the way I'm dressed!" hit me so hard lol
Man ive absolutely blitzed through this series, you are gonna hit it big! This is the freshest and most original OSRS content since Swampletics
This ia probably the most interesting osrs series going on atm. Keep it going all the way to the end bro 🔥
Love all your videos, and I very much admire your playstyle. It is very refreshing!
I did not expect the whole episode to be about family crest lol. Great series
Hey at least you got 'er done! Very good job. This series is very beloved and was a dream of mine for a while haha. Keep up the good work!
This series was my daily ritual for a while but now that I'm caught up I'm missing having more to watch ;(
J1mmy's got a questy series, much more off-the-cuff and riffy though. Hits different, for sure.
@@thewolfin is it similar as in blind playthrough? Or does he use wiki, plug-ins etc.?
It's a kind of skit-blind. He might know the answer, but almost roleplays as a noob or some kinda alien that just appeared one day and didn't grow up in Gielinor@@vgamedude12
Well that was a lot of desert walking! Keep up the great work my man!
It was indeed! Thank you
Protect from melee doesn’t protect against eye pokes, got it.
I’m happy to say I worked out all the way through watching your video so I feel like I walked the desert with you, a bit.
Though hopefully none of the silent black screen quips had valuable info as I couldn’t always catch them.
Haha it indeed does not.
Hey you did more than I then 💪
Love this series ❤ Makes me want to start a new account just to see if I can also complete quests without guides, but then I remember that Im not a masochist 😅
Keep up the great work!
This was the funniest episode you've had. Loved every minute of it. :D
ngl I'm enjoying watching somebody with no understanding try to figure out a quest without a guide, this is quite refreshing, even if you were way off course.
Never expected to enjoy a 45 minute video about family crest 🤣🤣
Recently ive been doing quests. I cant imagine life without quest helper. Major props for enduring 29 episodes of this.
Seeing you struggle for NOT speaking to npc x-y-z is the exact reason I despite quest in general google it up 😅 But I hope you keep it up as it is super entertaining to see
43:39 is so damned funny knowing about the sequel miniquest.
genuinely love this series, wish more people did it. Sorry for your struggles but they are indeed funny lol
Your frustration is valid. They actually changed this in the RS3 version of the quest! You no longer need to speak to the Gem Trader first, and his name is Avan, not Man, so you can just go talk to him. OSRS needs to make the same change.
Another great video mate! Top quality as always
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it :)
Really goes to show how dependant jagex is on the wiki guides
😂😂😂 when you put in your own text has to be my favorite parts always got me dying laughing thanks for the entertainment man!
This is awesome, I have always wanted to watch a video of the dialogue/story of all the quests, and almost went as far as making my own series but it looks like this series is just as good or even better then what i was making!
I was going to put text to speech & try and match the npc’s dialog with a voice tho
I feel like some time by the end of this series unguided is going to have to name change to unhinged from this torture xD
I'm going to use this series as a guide to do the quests and you can't stop me.
😂😂😂
"why is everyone called ali?" foreshaddowing...
29:49 funny cuz that guy there SELLS bronze bars :D
Having playing this game for thousands of hours being maxed its so fun to watch you miss little things and struggling but in the end getting it. I am jealous of not being ever able to play like this.
bittersweet to be caught up on this series but it's been very good! cheers!
There might be more to those gauntlets than you think… Love the vids, trying to give a cheeky hint without giving too much away
The moment the quest said about the desert & you put in for longer than you think.. I immediately knew I was buckling down for a wild ride 😂 it's funny as all hell, watching you pass the place you need to be and go off on a 2 hour long tangent
25:52 I love how while all this is happening there just a guard standing next to the two of you just watching.
Man's gonna know every nook and cranny of Gielinor by the end of this series
Always a happy Friday when Alien Food uploads! Stay awesome!
"Just give me like a mil, you must be fairly minted" 😂😂😂
I can't wait until you do Family Pest and find out just how minted he is!
Also, he explicitly says the gauntlets are magical...so don't forget that. Obviously I won't say more. But that's on you to figure out.
Oh. and for my little bit to add.
In RS3 there is a sequel to this quest. You just bug the guy until he gives up and throws you at a problem. Can't be worse then him dealing with it. right? :P
Oh, and RS3 is KINDA in the middle of fixing things like your rant.
These are great, laughed my arse off when you talked to "Man" and said, nah that can't be him.
Tbh, the only hint extra hint: "He has an expensive taste" would maybe, mayyyyybeeee get me talking to the gem trader
Such a great series! Keep it up! Can't wait till you reach MM2 and DS2 different levels
My god the crazy things that happen to you without a guide hahaha such primo content!!
40:34 i wonder how many new players have randomly died in the wild with this line of reasoning
Love watching your videos, some of this makes me think jagex should watch your videos and look at updating some of these older quests
Thank you so much for the generous donation!! Seriously means so much to me, I struggle to express my gratitude in a single comment back, but thank you!
I’d honestly love if they changed anything, even a single tiny thing due to my vids, would be so cool.
your character got new information through the gem trader, makes sence
I did the quest blind aswel and it was done in no time
This is probably the one time so far where the quest is legitimately broken design that can't possibly be solved without pain and suffering.
Woo! More unguided! Commenting before watching, I wonder how you'll figure out the demon kill, is the quest obvious enough? :)
*after watching* Wow. I had no idea finding the 2nd brother would be the difficulty
Haha when I started playing this game that’s all the desert there was, and that mine was PACKED, every ore was a fight to get 😅
