This album was Marvin's take on the state of the world at the time. His heart was heavy. The Vietnam War was in full effect, American soldiers were dying in droves, there were protests, inflation was high, and people were struggling. A lot of soldiers came back from war wounded and got hooked on drugs. It was a hard time in the US.

Dude. I love that you took the time to experience this album. If i were trapped on a deserted island with nothing but a record player and one album this is the album I'd choose to bring with me

Marvin would practice with the Detroit Lions Football team back in the day, in fact two of the Lions at the time (Mel Farr and Lem Barney) sang background on this LP. Eddie (Bongo) Brown- Bongo's-Congo's & The World Famous James Jamerson on Bass.

This song is so relevant to all that's still going on on College campuses...in warring countries etc. It wasn't meant to be " moist" or "sexy". It's a message song! What's going on?..as in "what's happening now in 2024". I think it was on the Motown 40 video where they actually showed how he recorded each layer of instruments (Of course James that's Master Bassist James Jamerson on the Bass Guitar), and vocal tracks. Berry Gordy shelved this album at first because he didn't want the brand to get too political! But Marvin persisted and the Album was very well received and soared!!! Everyone could relate due to the riots and war going during this time. It was a genius move for Marvin to go out on the limb with this new direction in his music.

Excellent album and my second favorite of all time (after Lauryn Hill). Its relevance is a testament to how music can really make such a grand impact.

This is epic ground breaking for music, social commentary, AND for recording technique while utilizing all the instrumental resources of HITSVILLE Motown recording studios. Some of the conga & bongo playing was done by Marvin himself. The overlapping of his own vocals was also a new thing. The master of soul Motown bass playing James Jamerson as such a major part of the orchestrating the vibe, in addition to foundation. It’s necessary to trace Marvin’s journey as an international treasure & pillar of American music, vocally, socially & musically. Check his soundtrack score to the movie, Trouble Man, his ‘60’s collaborations with the late gone too soon fem vocalist, Tami Terrell, who’s death he never got over, & ven his incredible vibe in Heard It Through The Grapevine.

Forgot to add. Marvins sings ALL the Vocals on the entire album and then edited and produced it HIMSELF while BARRY GORDY rejected it for Years until MARVIN won out in 1971! Thank God.
P.S. you TALK too much and do NOT LISTEN enough!
No SHADE just speaking MY TRUTH! Yeah and I'm a 70 year old Black woman!!!!
