- “Who wears Birkenstocks with socks? I guess I do!” says Gisele Bündchen as she studies Juergen Teller’s iconic Polaroid photo of her younger self. The legendary Brazilian supermodel describes some of her most famous outfits in this edition of British Vogue’s Life in Looks. Watch as Gisele recounts the story of her $15,000,000 ruby bra - a garment so valuable that she had to be accompanied by security guards while wearing it - and the time she graced the Oscars red carpet with then-boyfriend Leonardo DiCaprio. Gisele also tells an anecdote about her decision to sign a lucrative Victoria’s Secret contract, a commitment that she feared could result in her leaving high fashion forever in favour of commercial work. I think we're really glossing over the fact that she was a 17 or 18 year old girl made to walk topless on the runway. Crying because she didn't want to and now calling it one of the "most traumatizing moments". I think it's nice that she's able to draw something positive from the experience and say that it made her stronger, but I just see it as a clear example of the way the fashion industry is perversely exploitative of young girls. I don't know who in their right minds makes a crying teenager strut around topless. You can't tell me there isn't something else she could've worn!
I am so glad you picked this up as I was distressed hearing her speak about how traumatized she was. Also it is sad her stating that at aged 19 she didn't know how long her career would last when she signed with VA. The models who had entered and left, my goodness I was in shock.

I love how, at some point, she says she wouldn't run for VS with her bottom out as opposed to how she was forced to walk topless at a very young age. It shows that one of the reasons they go for young girls is because they don't have a voice yet, so it's easier to exploit them.
She wasnt "made" to; she was chosen to, she stated that she had been to over 40 castings and hadnt booked one at that point and Alexander Mcqueen who was an Artist put her in something she would Never worn for many reasons, 1 being her dad seeing it, but she made a choice that ultimately skyrocketed her career, so I think were glossing over the fact No one can make you do anything you dont want to do, you make a choice that you can walk away form, and she didnt she did it through her tears, like shes said these are the things that challenge you, it made her one of the greatest supermodels of all time.

What happened to her at the Alexander McQueen show is absolutely not okay. I know she seems at peace with it like she found her own justification of it making her stronger but wow. No girl should ever be put in that position. Agencies are usually required to ask your consent for lingerie or nude jobs beforehand and the rate is supposed to be much higher. What a shame that she was put in that position so young and being foreign. Not okay.

My in laws immigrated in their mid- twenties and now speak fluent German albeit with a foreign accent. And there are many immigrants just like them. I think if we push ourselves , learning a new language and being able to speak fluently even in your 30s is possible.

If you go deeper into Gisele’s history, you’ll learn she was in Elite’s Look of the year in 1994. She was 12 years old modeling swimsuits, and competing with girls all over the world to win the title. I can only imagine how uncomfortable she must’ve felt. Then to be 16, crying because her first runway show was her topless, and barely spoke English. She had to adjust her entire way of life at that time. But to then be THE most successful model in the history of the industry, she invented her own walk, and so many girls after her and today mimicked what she created. Living Legend and ICON. Love you Gisele.

She was the only model whom had graced the runway of VS that I truly love. She understood the assignment. After she was gone, the other models can never replicate her. It became too pageantry with the waving, flying kisses, flirting with the singers on stage. VS 2006, when she walked past JT like as if he does not exist, well that was an ICONIC moment.

In year 2000 she had over 25 Vogue covers. That’s more than many models have in their whole career! To have that many in one year is still a record. She was called “model of the millennium” and they were very right. She was everywhere in 1999/2000. Then by 2001 she already slowed down because she needed a break. Lol. I’ve loved watching her career while all the celebs took over the covers. She was able to take covers from the celebs. Loved it.
At her Peak. Gisele was earning $40 million a year. That's more than alot of singers and actors make. Her Day rate was anywhere from $125-$200K a day. Gisele even demanded to be paid in Euros cuz that's worth more than the dollar. She knew how to work the business so well at that point. 🙏🏾

It's sad how women in this industry are groomed so they will comply with being exploited. Years after this, she's done even more nude shoots and is seemingly ok with it. It reminds me of how the Game of Thrones actresses all claimed they were ok with shooting explicit scenes and how it's "empowering." Years later, they admitted that they felt exploited and manipulated into doing those scenes.

However when she spoke about the trama of a runway show, how she thought that at age 19 her career may not last, I really was taken back. She seems to have had a great escape from no longer taking part in runway shows anymore as the way she speaks about them, they seem in real life not as much fun as we would think. That's a fair point, but I think that these looks were chosen because they were "moments". Obviously Giselle has done many red carpets and covers, but not every look made the cut. What makes them iconic is the context and in that dress she went to the Oscars where she was not a nominee but the date of somebody else, so it makes sense to put it into context and show a foto with Leo.
11:15 I was lucky enough to be in the audience during the Opening Ceremony to watch Gisele’s last walk.
When I tell you, the crowd cheered SO loudly, the NBC broadcast did not do it justice. I’ve been a lifelong fan of hers and there were rumors that she would be appearing somehow, but it wasn’t official. Once I learned she arrived in Rio, I just HAD to take my chances and go to the show. 😂
As you know, the gamble paid off. And the fact that it would end up being her swan song from the runway has made it a special life memory of mine.

I remember seeing her for the 1st time in some minor fashion feature in Vogue, and immediately thought this is something very special!
I worked with her on a Steven Klein shoot. All of the male photo assistants were pushing one another out of the way to be closer to her. She knew her stuff. Moved differently than other models and wanted it to be good. I liked her for the short time I met her.
Not only everything worked out but you paved the way for more models to be able to do both catalog and high fashion, you were that iconic to change the game and you elevated victorias secret to a new level as well.

There are so many pictures of her by herself at that Oscar's carpet, why choose one of her with Leo? You can hear the change in her voice, she was not happy about it
You can tell her professionalism and graciousness at this moment. The change of her voice is very subtle - and she could have easily shaded him but she didnt. And she has told over the years that she has kept in touch with Leo's mum. She also has no reason to be bitter since shes got two beautiful kids with Tom. Leo has been a part of her life, she looked at it with fondness of that time, it's a beautiful dress, why does everything have to be dramatic all the time? It's called maturity. Something that the tiktok generation and the models of this time need to take note of.

Kendall could never. Gisele got her place for being actually good at her job. Strong and unique runway walk, amazing body, and she knows how to connect with the camera when taking a photo. Her eyes are always smizing, and she has one of the best body languages of any model when it comes to photos. Kendall looks pretty much like any Instagram model in her printwork, and her runway is decent at best. Her high salary comes down to fame really more than the talent.
