    Why do you think this happened?

    • @bundysgarage
      @bundysgarage  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      These coils are really sensitive for some reason. When they begin to fail or have fail and current is applied to them they get really hot. That heat builds up and builds up and eventually warps / melts the coil pack in place. The only reason I know this is because a 04 Accord V6 came in with a misfire on no 2, she drove it over to me and I popped the hood. Put my hand on all the coils and #2 was scolding hot, almost burnt my hand. Since it was still hot I pulled it out with vise grips right away cause I knew if I didn’t it would have gotten stuck like the one in the video. Also if the oil tube seal is leaking oil down into the oil tube, the oil will cook the coil pack as well, causing the same issue(s). Hope this helps and thanks for the question.

    • @mikealkarout9555
      @mikealkarout9555 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      this happens not because of the actual coils it happens because of loose spark plugs . The loose spark plugs will allow a tiny bit of hot combustion to get past the treads and slowly cook the coils over time and cause them to expand in the coil tubes and get stuck. 100% if you got a stuck coil in a Honda V6 when you get that coil out you will find the sparkplug is loose and you can unscrew it by hand.

      2 moths ago I was driving and heard a popping sound and like 5 minutes later my car died and would not start. I actually thought it was the timing belt that broke so I left it alone got it towed home . 2 months later I checked the timing belt and I looked good , I was thinking that I was gonna need a new engine . so today I checked my plugs and found a blown coil and the spark plug is gone!! I wonder what happened there. I hope if I replace my plugs and get a new coil that will fix it.

    • @mikealkarout9555
      @mikealkarout9555 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@randygonzales6559 The spark plug just came out or unscrewed it self and the compression of the engine blew the coil and plug out the tube. A new plug and coil will fix your issue for sure but I would also check the other 5 cylinders and at the very least change all the spark plugs and torque them to spec. Trust me if you had 1 spark plug pop out ,you have other spark plugs that are loose for sure and won't be long until it happens again. But if you tackle the job and have a few coils stuck it the tube they can be a pita to get out. Some come out easy with a needle nose pliers and other will take you hours of using penetrant and picks and screwdriver ,pliers and heat to break them out piece by piece . But stick with it and they will come out .There are vids on TH-cam on this exact issue giving you tips how to get them out.

    Just ran into this problem on my 07 Odyssey. Was gently trying to pry the coil pack out since it was stuck and it snapped right off flush with the spark plug tube like yours did. I tried putting two long wood screws into it and clamping vise grips across the screws, then prying on them with a 4ft pry bar. I couldn't get it to move at all. I figured it was just stuck to the spark plug somehow, I never thought it would be melted. Figured I might have to replace the spark plug tube if that's even possible. Thank you very much for this video, I already have a map gas torch as I live in the Ontario rust belt, everything here needs heat if you don't want to snap bolts taking things apart lol.

    • @bundysgarage
      @bundysgarage  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hope it helps you out. It’s caused by a leaking oil tube seal and the oil “pools” up in the tube and “cooks” the coil pack.

      @philmacdonald2087 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the response, I was doing this job to adjust valve lash but I bought all new valve cover gaskets too, the rear valve cover looks a little wet so I suspected something was up, I guess it really needs them!
      Any idea if the melted coil would cause this problem: If I try to pass on the highway by flooring it, once the rpm gets high enough the van acts as if the fuel is being cut for a moment and then comes back over and over again until I let off the gas. It feels like the whole van is bucking and you loose power enough that you can't accelerate until you let off the gas.

    I just had the exact same thing happen in a 2007 Honda Odyssey. Honestly, without this video I would have been lost. Thank you so much! I followed exactly as you showed and was able to remove the broken coil pack. I will say applying heat to the bottom of the tube was the most effective. Pulling actually didn't help as it was literally welded in there. Once you get the heat high enough the plug push out. Again, thank you!

    • @bundysgarage
      @bundysgarage  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are welcome. What I figured out later was that the oil tube seals at the top of the valve cover (on the inside) were cracked and leaking. Over time the spark plug tube filled with oil and the oil ended up "boiling" the coil pack. Like an egg in a pot that you are trying to hard boil. So it cooked the coil pack in place. So my advice to you is to pull both valve covers and replace the valve cover gaskets and oil tube seals with a quality gasket. Mahle or Beck Arnley. Stay away from fel Pro for the valve cover gaskets, I have had multiple issues with them. Hope this helps.

      @@bundysgarage Just as a follow up I was able to get most of the boot out with heat. However, I still had 2 inches stuck down inside around the spark plug. The boot and some plastic separated. I tried heating a spark plug socket red hot and dropping it in there hoping to melt my way down to the plug....no luck. I heated the lower part of the tube with no success. I finally got a 1/4" wood chisel and cut the handle down to fit the tight area and slowly chipped around the plug. Used a vacuum to get the chips out periodically. Oh, I also ground some teeth into a spark plug socket and put it on a drill with a swivel bit trying to cut my way down to the plug....that didn't work. Eventually, the chisel and patience got enough of the pieces out where I could get a socket around the plug. It came out. I rigged up a long tube to the vacuum and inserted it into the cylinder to hopefully get any pieces that fell down. Then, I put the valve cover and intake back on. Started the motor without the plug in that cylinder. The compression should blow any pieces out that were left behind. It's been running just fine since then. What a nightmare! I was almost thinking a mechanic was going to have to take the head off.

    Thanks for the info still can't find much on these engines. I got 10 TSX 3.5 and it melted in cylinder 1 on the backside so I don't want to torch it due to the wires. The reason it melted is either an open in the signal wire or short to ground. My car was started and shut off. The key switch was left on and it melted the coil while checking the codes

    • @bundysgarage
      @bundysgarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most likely it melted because the spark plug tube seal cracked and let oil in. The tube filled with oil and cooked the coil or you have some cheap coils in there. Stay with Denso or Hitachi coils.

    This just happened to me with my 07' Honda odyssey touring. It was cylinder #4. It took a few days and only a couple hours after work to get it free. Used some pb-blaster and some small flat heads, needle nose vise grips and trying to free it up. Long story short I was able to get it free and out by drilling a hole through it using an extension on a drill and impact drill bits. Grabbed my long needle nose pliers and was able to get it free with a couple good pulls without taking the valve cover off.

    • @brandono.4945
      @brandono.4945 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Get as much of the copper wiring out as you can of the old coil which will help free it up. Get all the plastic from around the hole, spray lube really helped once I was able to make some room between the broken coil and the spark plug tube hole. Most importantly take your time and come back to it if you have to.

    • @bundysgarage
      @bundysgarage  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Make sure you don’t have oil down in the spark plug tube. That’s what “cooks” the coil packs and they swell up. Causing them to get stuck. If yo do have oil down there make sure you replace the valve cover gaskets and the oil tube seals. You don’t want to cool another coil pack. Or if it’s just gone bad and you have been driving around with a check engine light on.

    I've got a 2005 Odyssey. This exact thing happened to me while driving down the highway at 70+mph! Coil on #5 just blew up/melted! No one I approached for help had ever seen anything like it. Ended up having to re-thread the spark plug hole (the plug fried as well). The more I check into it, the more I discover that this is not as rare as one might think, especially with these vTech engines. Do you know what causes it? I used to think Honda was the Primo vehicle. But, I've had so many problems with this '05 Odyssey and an '09 Pilot that I'm now looking at NOT buying a 2018 CRV due to similar engine problems. I guess Toyota is going to have to be my next go to.

    • @bundysgarage
      @bundysgarage  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Right! Can you image the back one. Make sure you check your spark plug tube seals. If they are leaking and causing oil to fill up the spark plug tube, you need to change them or it will happen again. What happens is oil gets in there and cooks the coil pack.

I don't think he had to go to as much trouble as you did, but he did have to break it to remove it. I would like to know what caused it to melt. I was having an EGR code and replaced the EGR valve, but apparently the ports need to be cleaned out because I kept getting the code. Man that’s a bummer. Well if you need help taking the head off I have some videos on how to do it. And if you need more help we can jump on a phone call and I’ll help you out as much as I can.

    Should of put a moist rag on the lower part of the tube so it only heats up the tube

    Yeah I have 3 packs like this on a 2001 Jeep Cherokee 4.7 and my problem is they are in the back 🤬 I'll have to try this method. Really sucks!! Bought the Jeep and the previous owner never mentioned it, but I seen they did try to remove it.

    • @bundysgarage
      @bundysgarage  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It sucks when previous owners don’t tell you everything that’s wrong with the car. But then they are trying to get the most for their vehicle. So it’s a catch 22. Good luck in those coils.

      How did you do it in your jeep? I'm having the same problem with my 4.7 in my durango.

      @Ponchyotaco 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Moparman58 I actually used a Dremel with a drill bit and screwed a screw into one, but then didn't work on the rest. So I Dremeled around the center and used the needle nose vise grip to pull it out. Jeeps running great now with some new fuel injectors too. I hope this helps cause I was so close to calling it quits.

    • @Ponchyotaco
      @Ponchyotaco 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh and with the Dremel I just kept poking holes around the center and twisted back and forth while pulling up slowly.

    • @JamieMelhuish
      @JamieMelhuish 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      My coil pack head pulled off. I had to take off the intake manifold and rear valve cover. Then used a propane torch to heat the spark plug tube (top and bottom, both sides). Much smoking from the coil pack but no fire. I was able to use needle nose vice grips to clamp onto a metal core in the coil. Initially could not move it at all, had to apply a lot of heat, then suddenly it released. I had the additional problem of the plug being held in with JB weld, which failed. Plug is out and it's either insert a thread or junk the car. (It's 210,000 miles and rusty)

  • @stephjax93
    @stephjax93 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Which bank do you think mine broke at?🤬🤬🤬 if you remove the valve cover couldn't you just remove the spark plug tube with the coil in it? Figured it be easier to grip.

    What part of the cool got the hottest? (MELT)

    • @bundysgarage
      @bundysgarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      What happens is the oil tube seal(s) fail and the tube that the coil pack sits in fills with oil. As the engine warms up and get hot it boils the oil, thus “cooking” the coil pack. A high quality coil pack, Hitachi or Denso, won’t cook like that unless it’s sitting in oil. As far as cheap coil packs, they can do all sort of funny things but usually you will see a misfire first, if ignored it will cause the coil to heat up and swell and fail.
