A new follower from a little boy who grew up on the Kentucky side of the Ohio River, an old garden by our house gave me arrowheads, fired marbles, and ground spherical objects, I don't know if the Native Americans played marbles or it was from the settlers. I have seen what appeared to be stone fishing weights for nets and an old guy told me. Can't confirm or deny that I will be watching you have fun my old back won't take.

You might want to carry some Zip Bags, so you can bag the organic finds, you can Carbon Date wood and Charcoal. I would encourage you ti get a few Archaeologist Tools. Like a Brush, "a digger's shovel", short with a sharp point, , and a "Trowell". ☀️ These are light in weight. Take Picture with your phone and (record the (Latitude/Longitude), just in case you also unearth a Major Ancient Find, so you have proof of find and details. You may want to take a class at your local Community College, or University. (a Class, but, ... (🔺 "don't stay too long or it might compromise your logic and uninhibited natural honest Thoughts"), as they are quite set in their "Mainstream Academic/Archaeologist" "beliefs". They hold a "19th Century Theory based Paradigm and Linear Timeline" as their "Foundation of Facts". Most Dogmatic about their "Idea of Factual". The "Standards of Science and Research" prohibits using a Theory as Fact. Not Judging, just Discernment You seem to have a great Passion for the work, and I would love to see ya discover something that really makes a positive influence on our True History. 8:10-ish. As soon as you find it’s possibly organic, determine length, carefully dig AROUND the artifact while leaving a small amount of soil matrix to support and preserve anything important around the item, and try to maintain same temp & moisture as location conditions until proper preservation can occur. One of the most important rules with wet organics is to preserve moisture, not dry them. It can create more loss of artifact material, fading of inks and dyes, and even total loss of the artifact. Still a find of a lifetime. You should get it verified by an anthropologist or archaeologist, then you’ll have a scientifically important find with a provenance record.
@@billshamblin5103 That's a good sentiment, except for two things: The river keeps eroding the site, and the kind of archeological dig you're referring to, i.e. the formal excavation of one partial, isolated fire pit without any settlement context isn't going to interest any archeology programs. Perhaps you should consult an adult about financing and resource allocation for archeological research - while bearing in mind that those things couldn't be drummed up for the excavation of the Steamboat Arabia, a major find, with a well-documented history and found in an actual context. I'd have put it more politely, but since you slung the mud, you deserve some of it on your face, too. Archeology has no place for sneering purists who have nothing of note to contribute beyond the sneers.
I had to come back and watch this again. That's really something special. We see a lot of stone and occasionally bone... but wood... now THAT is a rare treat. Thanks for rescuing and sharing it with us

Hi Scott , I was unable To sleep , I turned on you tube , and there was your smiling face . Congrats on finding the piece of bow ..that is a very rare find . It shows the passion you have for finding artifacts Of all the people on you tube , hunting items you are by far the most knowledgeable person out there . For The young , and those just stating , to hunt artifacts you you are a wealth of knowledge to help them in there new adventure , a guide to many happy times . I'm an artifacts hunter up in northern New Mexico in the mountains. I have a whole wilderness of land that I can search on and I've found tons of cool stuff. My 5 year old son is hooked on it just like I was when my dad first took me out on our first hunt. He's already found a handful of nice arrowheads and he has a good eye for them. Nothing brings me more joy than watching him find something cool. Keep up the great job and as always good luck in the future!
Very Much Appreciated! I bet you find all kinds of good things out there, very low humidity. Around here, everything is always wet. Even in the driest part of the summer, you go outside at night and the grass is wet from the dew. Very little biodegradable stuff survives around here, unless it’s preserved in a shell dump or, in this case, a fire.
When I was a young boy around 10 or so, we would stay with our grandparents. They lived about 200 yards from a main river in Alabama. Their neighbor had a huge field on the river bank where they used to plant a massive garden. When they plowed the field every year, I would walk along and find 20, 30, or more just like you show in your videos. I had no idea how old they were, but I had hundreds of them. I remember getting tired of picking them up and leaving a large pile. Someone knew their value as they were stolen when I took them to school. I always admired those arrowheads and wonder if there are any left as that was nearly 60 years ago. When we can hold in our hand items we know were used over 1,000 years ago it is special.
I agree, it does look like the end of a bow. I am a rockhound and a avid Native American tool and points hunter . I watch your show more than any other artifact show ,your joy and enthusiasm is exactly how i feel when im out hunting ,even if i dont find anything. Finding a piece of a wooden bow that may be thousands of years old is an amazing accomplishment! Kudos to you, Sir! Last Summer I bought 20 acres with a couple old homesteads. I spent most of the Winter cleaning up glass dumps and hauling away remnants of old houses. I dated them to the 1920's -1930's. Even though my findings were very recent compared to yours, it was still fun finding little clues and piecing together objects to tell a story.
Have you ever taken anything to the Moundsville museum? They have a lab there with guys that would love to identify and verify any finds that you may have questions about. I love your content! Your enthusiasm and knowledge is amazing!
Put it into acetone and Duco cement and you're good . Even if there is some dirt in it you will save it ! MASON JAR ABOUT 3/4 FULL AND A 1/3 TUBE OF THE CEMENT ! SOAK IT FOR 24 TO 48 HOURS .
Native Americans used to build a fire and then put their chert "flint bearing rock" into the hot coals then cover the fire and chert with dirt to temper the stone before they began the process of "flint knapping" to make various points, spear points, and flint knives and hide scrapers. The rocks you were removing and stacking into a pile, sounded like flint rock when they would touch each other as you tossed them. The areas that they knapped the tempered flint rock was generally fairly close to the tempering fire. I found a site once, back in the '80s near Laredo, Texas that had 6 knapping sites that contained a good number of failed points caused during the knapping process. Also found 4 good hunting/ fighting arrow points outside the campground. Also found 10 preformed flint trade blanks that they'd use to trade with other bands. Too old and crippled up now to get back into the field but sure did enjoy coming across these accidental treasures. Keep at it and have a great time hunting. Keeps you young and excited. 7:21 g
@@cleggsadventures Yes I did, in varying terrains here in Texas. The South Texas brush country, the Central Texas Hill Country, and sections of the West Texas plains country(Llano Estecado). I seemed to just have a knack at recognizing old Native American "mounds" that had been somewhat overgrown with brush or grasses. Pretty lucky I guess. It was interesting to know that I was probably the first human being to touch these artifacts after the last person had actually used them. Quite a humbling privilege!
In most plains tribes, when a person passes away, they'll usually burn all of their possessions. This might be a theory of why you found burned remnants of a bow. My tribe's history is that we'd burn everything that was theirs.
@@williamkious5349so what he may not be going about it correctly but the river was going destroy the "possible" burial anyways. It's not everyday you find wooden artifacts and many don't know the procedure for preservation especially if its wet. Atleast he is trying to preserve artifacts. The leave it alone crowd would cause us to learn nothing and the donate it back to modern indigenous tribes crowd are ridiculous. Since it's not likely the same tribe and if they want to preserve artifacts, knowledge and history then they can take there asses out and find it themselves.
Thanks! I’ve developed a keep eye to anything out of place, and different shapes. You’d be surprised what I’ve found following others that just don’t look well enough.
A. Very cool potential find! B. As an archaeologist who is used to meticulously, going down 5cm at a time, document everything, retain soil for analysis, piece plot important artifacts and features etc.. this excavation gave me trauma I and a twitch 😂
These fire pits show their selves multiple times a year along this muddy riverbank, I find several each year. As quickly as they appear, the river comes up and washes them away. All they usually ever contain is a little bit of charcoal and few dozen hard stones (cooking stones) as I like to call them, as I believe multiples were were left constant around fires for warming water and such. This pit was lost a few days later in the next high water. I never find anything in its original place around here, as you know all this stuff gets washed out and lays in the creeks or on the river bank where I can just pluck it off the surface or sift it beneath the beach sand and mud. If I was ever to go up above the beach where the fields and livable areas were, and did an excavation, the artifacts would be in situ, and there I would definitely document all finds and depths. Just everything I find has been moved from its original location by natural or man made destruction and erosion. I’m not a looter and don’t cause destruction, I’m just a hobbyist that likes to learn with everything I pick up.
That's awesome! I wish you'd do a close up of the stones from the pit. Several years ago we were on the bank of the Ohio River at an artifact show and I found some red rocks on the beach close to the water's edge. I asked one of the women there (I believe she was one of those working the show) about the red. She couldn't remember what it meant. I've been thinking maybe it was a fired rock like what you're finding. I've kept some from the beach that day. I think it was Manchester, Ohio - the event was at a place called The River Barn, I think.

11:05 I’m watching about the fourth video from your library. I’ll turn 55 this year and I’ve always loved history and artifacts since I can remember. I was a History Minor at Fairmont State. However, looking back, I wish that becoming an Archaeologist would have been more of a passion for me. I was always worried about the income and location of where sites may take me and my biggest desire was to raise a family. Anywho, long story short, we’re retired now in Kingwood and we live near the Cheat River. I would love to get any direction from you on your thoughts about the Cheat and how to proceed as a beginner. Thanks Joe! I’m over in Tyler County on the Ohio River. I’m not sure what type river the Cheat is, swift or dammed. The Ohio has almost zero current but fluctuates in level a bit. I’m not sure my river videos would help much if not the same conditions. But, I have several how-to’s videos in my library for other places to look besides rivers. Several tips and tricks they may help. I wish I could help more but I’m just not familiar with the terrain in that area.

@@cptjshaffer Anywhere near water is a good place to look. If you can find out where the native trails were/are, that's a good place to start as well. Old Stagecoach roads are a good source as well..

i remember watching a video of a guy in arizona finding a complete apache bow in the desert, really interesting how some stuff gets preserved and other stuff disappears almost immediately, good stuff man
That's awesome Scott, I hope you can preserve it. I found what I think was the middle section of a bow but there were no tool marks and it was deteriorating quickly. GL next hunt 👍
What an awesome find. I just started digging a spot in my back yard that's producing tons of charcoal flakes and some big, whole branch chunks that are like partially fossilized or something. No clear fire pit or major flakes yet.
One more thing that I wanted to tell you about digging in North Carolina, I found a Kirk site that was really awesome, not only did we find Kirk points scattered around the area but we found a cashe of first stage kirks that contained 73 points and blades. It was about the most amazing find that I have ever discovered. Things like that just don't happen every day and for me it's been a once in a lifetime find, counting everything that was found, there was over a hundred artifacts found on that site, man it was a awesome day hunting artifacts
OMG Scott that was an amazing find! I knew what it was when I saw you hold it up. Back in my younger days we would dig by the Coosawattee river hear in NW Ga and we found charcoal fire pit as well only found points and pottery but it was fun. Amazing you found a piece of a bow! keep digging Brother

At 1:37, that "stone" you tossed was not JUST a heating or cooking stone. That was an artifact. You could CLEARLY see the holding spots and chipping or sparking corner. I hope you find it😊

I think you're probably right about the bow end. I found three campsites with the coals and wood in solid clay on my property. All three had flakes surrounding them as if a small hunting party made blades while they camped. One campsite did have a large rock that looked to be used to sharpen something causing grooves all over it. I'm thinking the party used my hilltop land as a stopping point to stay overnight. Then head back to village over by what is now Bainbridge Ohio.
Amazing find. To hold an old bow piece still intact after 1000 years...maybe dip it into a good varnish ? It would harden and seal it for preservation? Keep up the good videos!

@@cleggsadventures Please make sure to do an update video when you do! How far back was that fire pit dated to? I'm willing to bet that this find is THE oldest Indigenous American bow remnant yet discovered in that part of the country! Since it was already starting to come apart I'd recommend getting a hold of someone soon for preservation sake. I know they have methods for that but to heck if I'm that familiar with it. I would love to be able to do what you do. I live within the Red River Valley (Red River of the North.) The soil here is entirely dark brown clay since this is the ancient glacial lake bed of Lake Agassiz. I have no idea how deep the clay layer is here in the Valley. Any indigenous artifacts would long since have been buried in layer after layer of mud by the frequent flooding the valley is (in)famous for before turning back into clay. What's worse is that the clay is so sticky & dense that it would be impossible to use your techniques to search for anything. There are practically no natural stone formations, besides stones or boulders deposited by glaciers, in this part of the country. What on Earth would they even have used as raw materials for points in this region? Would they have had to trade for it from people far removed from this region or perhaps resorted to using bone?
Wow Scott! Just think of the last person who touched that fire wood and that bow limb. What would their life be like. Just imagine. Wow. I live in central Texas and also like to find bits of history, but nothing like you have found. Thanks for sharing.
You can preserve the charcoal by heating bees wax up and brushing it onto the charcoal. It dries clear and holds the charcoal together well. I'm sure it would help the bow peice also.

Awesome! Was walking at a park here in Iowa along the Des Moines River, camping and hiking area and 1 burial mound along the trails that they keep up. And there was a fire pit that started to get eroded out of one of the hiking trails, a nice clump of fire cracked rock!

Finding a piece of a wooden bow that may be thousands of years old is an amazing accomplishment! Kudos to you, Sir!
Last Summer I bought 20 acres with a couple old homesteads. I spent most of the Winter cleaning up glass dumps and hauling away remnants of old houses. I dated them to the 1920's -1930's. Even though my findings were very recent compared to yours, it was still fun finding little clues and piecing together objects to tell a story.

Don't let it dry out. It will disengrate. Keep it in ionized water.
Put it into acetone and Duco cement and you're good . Even if there is some dirt in it you will save it ! MASON JAR ABOUT 3/4 FULL AND A 1/3 TUBE OF THE CEMENT ! SOAK IT FOR 24 TO 48 HOURS .

Native Americans used to build a fire and then put their chert "flint bearing rock" into the hot coals then cover the fire and chert with dirt to temper the stone before they began the process of "flint knapping" to make various points, spear points, and flint knives and hide scrapers. The rocks you were removing and stacking into a pile, sounded like flint rock when they would touch each other as you tossed them. The areas that they knapped the tempered flint rock was generally fairly close to the tempering fire. I found a site once, back in the '80s near Laredo, Texas that had 6 knapping sites that contained a good number of failed points caused during the knapping process. Also found 4 good hunting/ fighting arrow points outside the campground. Also found 10 preformed flint trade blanks that they'd use to trade with other bands. Too old and crippled up now to get back into the field but sure did enjoy coming across these accidental treasures. Keep at it and have a great time hunting. Keeps you young and excited. 7:21 g

@@cleggsadventures Yes I did, in varying terrains here in Texas. The South Texas brush country, the Central Texas Hill Country, and sections of the West Texas plains country(Llano Estecado). I seemed to just have a knack at recognizing old Native American "mounds" that had been somewhat overgrown with brush or grasses. Pretty lucky I guess. It was interesting to know that I was probably the first human being to touch these artifacts after the last person had actually used them. Quite a humbling privilege!
In most plains tribes, when a person passes away, they'll usually burn all of their possessions. This might be a theory of why you found burned remnants of a bow. My tribe's history is that we'd burn everything that was theirs.
Which makes his careless approach even more annoying... this could be a burial site
@@williamkious5349so what he may not be going about it correctly but the river was going destroy the "possible" burial anyways. It's not everyday you find wooden artifacts and many don't know the procedure for preservation especially if its wet. Atleast he is trying to preserve artifacts. The leave it alone crowd would cause us to learn nothing and the donate it back to modern indigenous tribes crowd are ridiculous. Since it's not likely the same tribe and if they want to preserve artifacts, knowledge and history then they can take there asses out and find it themselves.

Thanks! I’ve developed a keep eye to anything out of place, and different shapes. You’d be surprised what I’ve found following others that just don’t look well enough.
A. Very cool potential find!
B. As an archaeologist who is used to meticulously, going down 5cm at a time, document everything, retain soil for analysis, piece plot important artifacts and features etc.. this excavation gave me trauma I and a twitch 😂
These fire pits show their selves multiple times a year along this muddy riverbank, I find several each year. As quickly as they appear, the river comes up and washes them away. All they usually ever contain is a little bit of charcoal and few dozen hard stones (cooking stones) as I like to call them, as I believe multiples were were left constant around fires for warming water and such. This pit was lost a few days later in the next high water. I never find anything in its original place around here, as you know all this stuff gets washed out and lays in the creeks or on the river bank where I can just pluck it off the surface or sift it beneath the beach sand and mud. If I was ever to go up above the beach where the fields and livable areas were, and did an excavation, the artifacts would be in situ, and there I would definitely document all finds and depths. Just everything I find has been moved from its original location by natural or man made destruction and erosion. I’m not a looter and don’t cause destruction, I’m just a hobbyist that likes to learn with everything I pick up.
That's awesome! I wish you'd do a close up of the stones from the pit. Several years ago we were on the bank of the Ohio River at an artifact show and I found some red rocks on the beach close to the water's edge. I asked one of the women there (I believe she was one of those working the show) about the red. She couldn't remember what it meant. I've been thinking maybe it was a fired rock like what you're finding. I've kept some from the beach that day. I think it was Manchester, Ohio - the event was at a place called The River Barn, I think.
I find a lot of them, they are scattered everywhere here on the river. I give a demonstration here.

11:05 I’m watching about the fourth video from your library. I’ll turn 55 this year and I’ve always loved history and artifacts since I can remember. I was a History Minor at Fairmont State. However, looking back, I wish that becoming an Archaeologist would have been more of a passion for me. I was always worried about the income and location of where sites may take me and my biggest desire was to raise a family.

Thanks Joe! I’m over in Tyler County on the Ohio River. I’m not sure what type river the Cheat is, swift or dammed. The Ohio has almost zero current but fluctuates in level a bit. I’m not sure my river videos would help much if not the same conditions. But, I have several how-to’s videos in my library for other places to look besides rivers. Several tips and tricks they may help. I wish I could help more but I’m just not familiar with the terrain in that area.

@@cptjshaffer Anywhere near water is a good place to look. If you can find out where the native trails were/are, that's a good place to start as well. Old Stagecoach roads are a good source as well..

i remember watching a video of a guy in arizona finding a complete apache bow in the desert, really interesting how some stuff gets preserved and other stuff disappears almost immediately, good stuff man

What an awesome find. I just started digging a spot in my back yard that's producing tons of charcoal flakes and some big, whole branch chunks that are like partially fossilized or something. No clear fire pit or major flakes yet.

One more thing that I wanted to tell you about digging in North Carolina, I found a Kirk site that was really awesome, not only did we find Kirk points scattered around the area but we found a cashe of first stage kirks that contained 73 points and blades. It was about the most amazing find that I have ever discovered. Things like that just don't happen every day and for me it's been a once in a lifetime find, counting everything that was found, there was over a hundred artifacts found on that site, man it was a awesome day hunting artifacts

At 1:37, that "stone" you tossed was not JUST a heating or cooking stone. That was an artifact. You could CLEARLY see the holding spots and chipping or sparking corner. I hope you find it😊

I think you're probably right about the bow end. I found three campsites with the coals and wood in solid clay on my property. All three had flakes surrounding them as if a small hunting party made blades while they camped. One campsite did have a large rock that looked to be used to sharpen something causing grooves all over it. I'm thinking the party used my hilltop land as a stopping point to stay overnight. Then head back to village over by what is now Bainbridge Ohio.

@@cleggsadventures Please make sure to do an update video when you do! How far back was that fire pit dated to? I'm willing to bet that this find is THE oldest Indigenous American bow remnant yet discovered in that part of the country!
Since it was already starting to come apart I'd recommend getting a hold of someone soon for preservation sake. I know they have methods for that but to heck if I'm that familiar with it.
I would love to be able to do what you do. I live within the Red River Valley (Red River of the North.) The soil here is entirely dark brown clay since this is the ancient glacial lake bed of Lake Agassiz. I have no idea how deep the clay layer is here in the Valley.
Any indigenous artifacts would long since have been buried in layer after layer of mud by the frequent flooding the valley is (in)famous for before turning back into clay. What's worse is that the clay is so sticky & dense that it would be impossible to use your techniques to search for anything.
There are practically no natural stone formations, besides stones or boulders deposited by glaciers, in this part of the country. What on Earth would they even have used as raw materials for points in this region? Would they have had to trade for it from people far removed from this region or perhaps resorted to using bone?
That's an awesome find. So rare, and to find it in a fire pit of all places.

You can preserve the charcoal by heating bees wax up and brushing it onto the charcoal. It dries clear and holds the charcoal together well. I'm sure it would help the bow peice also.

Awesome! Was walking at a park here in Iowa along the Des Moines River, camping and hiking area and 1 burial mound along the trails that they keep up. And there was a fire pit that started to get eroded out of one of the hiking trails, a nice clump of fire cracked rock!
