In his time, Michelangelli was considered a "pianist's pianist", the epitome of both technique and musical taste. This scherzo is a great example of why. He played the most complex passages with such aplob and equanimity, never any drama, always seeming to be in complete control. Add to that a fabulous touch and pedal usage to gain the most beautiful sounds. Thank God these videos were saved and made available so we can apprecite and enjoy his playing always.

Being one of my favorite pieces of piano literature, I've heard countless interpretations of this true gem. I never realized how much more I would have enjoyed this interpretation over others, but I will never be able to accept so superficially any other pianist's rendition since hearing Michelangeli's performance. Understanding Chopin's playing style, performance tendencies, and the embodiment of his most personal gifts of passionate and soulful singing-like musical expression, all interwoven into his compositions so intimately; I believe this rendition is as accurate to Chopin's own creation in how it was meant to be recreated. The tempo never rushed and always balanced to the particular passage, the subtlety in dynamic expressions, the illusion of metric asymmetry through use of rubato while blending syncopations with steady pulses of the beat, and the technical control to play with what others would feel restrained by, yet Michelangeli gives freedom to the atmosphere of this musical story. There are too few pianists in this world that will play quite as passionate with clarity, but instead seem to choose technical demonstrations to showcase their talents, while sacrificing the true substance of a composer's spirit contained in their works.

You mention microphones? and this is a monoaural recording of 1962 when stereo sound was not yet available, at least here in Italy. Think of what it would
      be today!
I keep asking myself why nobody ever mentions:
      1. The quality of the instrument (in this case a super Steinway&Sons).
      2. A close to perfection and stable aural equal temperament tuning
(no electronic tuning devices were available in the sixties).
      What do you say?

A great performance which is not over-pedalled and shows a wider dynamic range than the majority of pianists who simply barnstorm through this piece with an unrelieved fortissimo. In my opinion this playing is therefore closer to Chopin's original conception of the work. It is a great pity that Michelangeli is no longer with us; where is his like to-day?

  • @MXDelfos

Compared to other pianists, his immaculate technique tended to be more or less idiosyncratic (like Gould's) and that's why many consider Michelangeli cold and detached. In this performance, note the staccato in the first notes. Sound very mechanical, as if the pianist feared to be too emotional. But he lets the music speak; within his perfect clarity, he lets Chopin speak. ABM was a very special class of showman, IMHO; perhaps like Godowski. Those were Uber piano gods. What a performance!

+Michael Sulman 100% agree with this; Michelangeli plays this with his usual machine-line precision and dryness, and it's an impressive technical achievement, but Martha Argerich really brings it to life in what I'd have to say is the benchmark recording of this fine work.

+Simon Durrant I think she plays it too fast. She hits all the notes but you miss half of them when you listen to her. I love her but except for the rare piece that's my criticism of her always. I've played this piece since I was 12. This is the performance that made me want to play it. As for Michelangeli, his technique is as textbook as it comes. There's a reason why they all turned to him when they had crises.

Argerich is too bombastic. Generally speaking, his Chopin is usually that way. Too passionate, if that can be a downside.

@fredericfranc The recording published by PA091594862 is the same I propose in video format (1962): to realize it, you can simply compare the "F" played by ABM at 0:41 (my recording) and at 0:32 (PA091594862 recording)! Moreover, listening to them for about two/three times in a row, you can understand how the two video propose the same audio track...

the sound of Michelangeli is SUBLIME... for me he's comparable to Horowitz or Rubinstein interpretation
