In this episode, Jason and Vin take the wheel of the brand-new 2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5 N, the world's first electric hot-hatch. With its Giugiaro-inspired retro looks and 641-hp dual-motor powertrain, the first electric N product is fast and beautiful.
But is it something that true automotive enthusiasts could live with? Is it time for an electric hot-hatch? And more important, do Hyundais' gimmicky modes detract from the car's overall appeal?
What's perhaps most surprising is how the guys feel about N e-Shift, a sound- and g-force simulation of a traditional ICE powertrain. You'll have to watch to understand.
Make sure to stay tuned for Jason's trademark drifting and sliding around the famed Laguna Seca racetrack - with unfiltered observations and a couple laughs. - ยานยนต์และพาหนะ
Welcome to 1RUN, our newest experimental car-review show. In this show, veteran automotive journalist Jason Cammisa teams up with Ex-Hoonigan Internet personality Vin Anatra to review the newest and latest cars from the true enthusiast perspective. Like it? Love it? (Hate it?) Let us know, we'd love your feedback.
Idea is very good and will work but the mic and sounds are off which i think will be fixed in the next episode of RUN1 pretty good show for reviews. Good luck on the future
Along with the dash side camera. A lot of glare on the lens and reflections.
🤩🙏❤️🫶😍
Not surprised, Vins launch vid did great!
I agree with prior comments around microphone positioning and camera angles. I think a lot of your viewers see Cammisa + Hagerty and now associate that combo with movie level production videos so I could see that hurting this experimental run. I think that if the level of production goes up to match your other videos and if they do a brief walk around of the car before the drive - this could be a successful series of videos. Best of luck and thank you for continuing to invest in the industry and enthusiasts.
If Jason Cammisa reviewed a phonebook from 1950, it would make for a great video. I never miss a chance to watch anything this guy does. Him reviewing cars is just icing on the cake for me.
But if you're having Jason review something from 1950, maybe an XK120. Or does Derek own the old-car franchise?
What if we got Jason Cammisa and Carlos Lago to do a video together? Would the internet explode from a thinner/more chill clone reviewing a car with himself?
Adding Vin and the hooligans (see what I did there) will watch. I agree with your comment.
Now I want the video of him reviewing a phonebook
His body of work should be a part of the curriculum of every single journalism school.
As Vin said, “They had to work a lot harder at making a performance enthusiast car than any other brand has to work.” They definitely over delivered.
how they over delivered?, it is a SUV sized vehicle, with 2.5 tons of weight with the driver inside, no manual gearbox, no engine and a laughable range, when driven at a decent pace; slower on the Ring than hot hatches with more than half the power...aka, a car for posers not for drivers!
Please tell me how they over delivered with enthusiast drivers in mind, because I see zero proof of that. In fact I see quite the opposite, this being the perfect poser vehicle.
@@eugenuxRecorded 7m45s on the Nürburgring in an SUV stock car.
Unlike tycan and plaid, this is the only EV that can be driven on a track with cast iron brakes without expensive carbon ceramic brakes.
It is also the only EV that can run more than two laps of the Nürburgring thanks to its powerful cooling performance for the motor and battery.
Do you need further explanation?
@@eugenux You're completely missing the point of the car. The car is meant to be a fun, trackable car that accepts the possibility of an EV-only future. You can do whatever you want with this thing, who cares if it doesn't have a big engine and if its not the fastest thing on the road (even though it'll still beat >95% of street cars). The point is that it's fun, and realistically it is everything that an enthusiast would want, just using EV tech.
@@eugenux Imagine that the technologies listed above are included in 6 instead of 5.
It will be a complete game changer in the EV era.
Hyundai has broken the limits that were thought to be impossible in EVs unless expensive materials were used.
@@eugenuxI see what you're saying, but funny how the Cayenne Turbo GT and Urus Performante also fit the same description. Have you see n the range for 600+hp v8s?
Motortrend was a fool to lose Jason.
You're absolutely right! Camisa is my absolute favorite auto journalist and the nerdiest of nerds. I don't know Vin before this but I hope they do some more of these. Really good chemistry.
Who was that other guy he worked with at Motortrend? Is he still with them? They made a great duo imo - really miss those old episodes.
@@sk8rboy509 You're talking about Largos Carlo.

As a grown ass man who still makes drifting rev limiter noises with my shopping trolley I can say fake noise can be cool af
My 4yo son is convinced I can drift like Ken Block at Costco. 😂
It's a gimmick.
@@hugolafhugolaf yes it is, but that doesn't mean we can't enjoy it.
@@hugolafhugolaf I thought it was just a gimmick too, until I realized that people judge speed by those sounds, which makes it functional. Ok, a functional gimmick if you will. With capital fun
If I don’t drift the shopping cart, with the appropriate noises, my 2 year old daughter gives me the side eye of disappointment. She is my spirit animal.
Ioniq 5 owner here. That constant beeping is the lane departure warning set to alert. Whoever let you borrow it for the video, set it to alert you when you drift towards either side of the road. They wanted to make sure you stay inside the lanes.
I would enjoy this format better if it had more elements of a traditional car review where we get to see the car, the interior, under the hood, etc.
Yea, if they at least would show some B-Roll while they're talking about things like the diffuser and bumpers. Or the seats. Or that cool feature, the rear wiper.
The interior under the hood is boring. Looks were a little under represented
@@meest03 I think the point with that was how the regular Ioniq 5 doesn't actually have a rear wiper, although being a hatchback, so it was a joke as being "cool"
I feel like it deff needs a portion of the video outside of the vehicle and them checking it out. B roll also welcome! Enjoyed the pair tho, lots of driving experience between them. Doesn't need the full on 1 take format.
Under the hood 😂😂
A battery pack…. Under the car.
This is a pairing I DID NOT expect. But I am all about it. Cammisa and Vin? Thumbs up!
I don't deserve it! But I want it.
I love my Ioniq 5! Can’t imagine how much more this thing drives. Hyundai isn’t messing around
I was not expecting to see Vin here, but it’s a welcome surprise.
RIP Ken and Hoonigan. What an era.
I still wish they made this at about 5/8 or 3/4 scale, but I'm glad they over-delivered on the "fun" quotient.
Now if they could take this car's skateboard and throw the NVision 74 body on top, it would be worth the money in my eyes.
Oooooo now THAT is an idea
Then people will complain there’s not enough back seat space and storage space. You can’t win.
@@JohnLee-db9zt I wish you weren't right. 😥
The big question then would be, are you okay with 5/8 or 3/4 the range?
@@oldred9122 For me, personally? 5/8 of the range and 5/8 of the weight at 3/4 of the price would be a win.
Then again, I'm the type of weirdo with Honda S660 near the top of his "ideal daily" list, so I _know_ I'm not representative of the "average American" car buyer.
Jason and Vin never would have thought but it actually works they are a great team
They look like brothers to me.
So good.
Ridiculous chemistry
I spoke to Albert Beerman at Goodwood about my i20N and this. He said I should love this as I love my little i20N
the suspension might be as harsh in both but the SUV is more than 2x the weight of your i20 hot hatch.

@MrDonkrypton I'm glad I'm not the only one seeing these mid 2000's "luxury designs being recycled. Badly, might I add.
This is kind of a strange crossover but extremely welcome. I have been watching Jason and Vin for years and years and they definitely have very strong (sometimes unpopular) opinions on cars, so its great to see them review something together! Cant wait for more of these to come!
And there will still be snobby people saying it's "still a Hyundai" and "Cost too much for a Hyundai". They have zero idea of the level of detail that Hyundai went to develop this car. It is an exellent attempt from the underdog. Bravo.
Solid point, people should judge the quality of the car based on, surprise! The quality. If you have looked inside the trunk of a BMW lately everything has been commoditized and there really isn't a huge difference between brands. Once all these cars are forced into electrification there is going to be even less difference between the different brands.
Hyundai has literally been winning Car of the Year awards all around the world, and even World Car of the Year awards. But these people still think it's the 90s Hyundai.
A lot of us know the Hyundai from the 90s, when they made literal pieces of poop. It's taking a lot to change that image.
I wish this was one of the more professionally produced videos, especially for such a unique car.
This is the first EV that car people actually seem to want.
I want one really badly!
This feels like a niche car within a niche product group rather than something that has mass appeal to the general public.
@@S8ER Yeah, just like any extreme SUV/hot hatch? What is the relevance of your comment?
@@TheCarLovingSwede you said this is the first EV that car people actually want. You could argue the statement is wrong for every hot hatch/extreme SUV as well. The looks of this are polarizing and it’s an EV so I don’t believe it has mass appeal as your statement implies. It’s not really that deep of a comment.
@@TheCarLovingSwedeAs someone who has owned two hot hatches. I can say this vehicle does not appeal to me. It’s far too expensive and far too heavy. The appeal of hot hatches is that they are fun, lightweight and affordable. I don’t want a heavy SUV/ Crossover. Regardless of how fast it is.
@vr6gls well this really isn't in the "hot hatch" category, it is more in the "hyper hatch" category as the industry has dubbed it. So more like an A45 AMG or RS3 than it is a Golf R competitor. With those vehicles in mind the price doesn't seem as out of whack if you are in that market of hatchback.
This is a great combination. Two true car enthusiasts talking and doing car stuff.
I really like this team up. I hope we see more of these 2 together reviewing
When a car makes you smile and you watching other people drive it.
I love the format of two car enthusiasts discussing the vehicle to review it, but I did miss them walking around it, opening it up and discussing more about other aspects of the car.
This thing looks like an absolute HOOT. The idea of a rev limiter making it more engaging is a neat piece of design. This is the first EV that I’ve actually gone “yeah. I’d like a piece of that”. Also is it me or do you get some Lancia Delta vibes with the design?
just 3 times bigger lol
@@TheEV6GT and only a whole 1000kgs heavier. Sheer sportiness there.
To me it looks like an enlarged Omni GLH.
15:19 I can’t lie, the aviation fan in me kinda loves this. Its sounded like a turbojet experience a compression stall but went back to chugging
LOL I love how much fun they’re having with all the silly modes. Also love how Hyundai is just allowing us to have fun with this car by simulating the sounds by pairing it with how an ICE car actually shifts and moves hahahaha. I feel like it’s more of an ICE simulator, and despite being gimmicky, looks so fun when you see these guys go at it.
Their reaction to the jet “shifting” was hilarious!
It was cool to see Vin with Jason on Hagerty 🤘🔥
I can feel how much genuine fun you guys are having with this thing. Thanks for making me grin.
I love Jason and his reviews. I own a 2023 Elantra N and also love it. The UI in the Elantra N is barely okay for conveying the meanings and impacts of the settings changes, and managing your drive modes. Once you have your setups for regular driving, you barely have to touch it again. With all the extra functions and settings of the Ioniq 5 N Hyundai should provide a bluetooth connection to a PC or tablet that have better descriptions and/or videos. Then you can be the "guy with a laptop next to him" from all the movies.
Then Zack from The Smoking Tire mentioned sound and performance "packs". I know BMW would sue, but what if you could add the sound of an E30 M3, the same shift points, and torque curve. Then swap between "your cars". I would add my entire previous collection if possible. And some dream cars.
If they could make it sound line an Lexus LFA, I wouldn't care that it's an EV
All automakers wanting to deliver fun EVs to enthusiasts must absolutely take notes. If we can improve battery technology to create lighter EVs (solid state battery technology, anyone?), and improve overall charging infrastructure, I bet the future of fun cars will be very bright.
Yooooo VIn at Hagerty is so awesome please do more with him, his enthusiasm for cars is infectious
Hey I totally love this show! Vin is awesome and I must confess, just recently stumbled across Jason. Both of them are awesome content creators. Im excited to see what they come up with together!
Everyone else reviewing the new land cruiser this morning and as a person who still doesn't like EV's, this is where I want to be. Jason can be doing a video on a 2001 Caravan and I'll still watch (and love) the entire thing.
Bring back head to head with Jason and Vin
I picked mine up last week. I think it’s going to take me a few more weeks to understand how all the modes work😊
Keep doing this stuff, guys. Great matchup. Really enjoyed the deep dive and conversation on usable modes and features. This is like a podcast that should accompany a video review that would have otherwise been too long if it included everything you wanted to discuss. Big thumbs up!
good for you vin i’ve been watching all your new videos congrats on getting on hagerty!
Very happy to see you two together, big fan ! keep it up !
The crossover / mash up we didn't know we needed. It makes sense, Vin likes old cars and VWs, so does Jason. I've been following these guys closely until I saw Vin comment on one of Jason's post and thought "Of course these guys knows each other, they have similar taste.."
Instead of endlessly chasing the magic of Top Gear these production companies need to embrace great pairings like these two
Love the fact that Jason is talking about UX in car software and promoting a better experience for users. You know your lingo 👏
The combination of hosts I didn’t know I needed! So excited to see more!
A collab of two of my follows I never would have thought of, but am so glad to have found.
Looking forward to more Cammisa and Vin content.
The world's best electric car👍
1Run, I loved it. More please. Jason and Vin work well together. Impressed with the Ioniq5 N.
Hagerty just keeps on changing the game, it's so awesome! From Carmudgeon with Cammisa and Heifen, revelations, ICONS, ultimate drag race, know it all, etc. All beautifully done, in-depth and hilarious. You've got the great Henry Catchpole, Larry Chen, Jay Leno, to name a few. And now Vin and Jason, which I totally love! Just the best❤🏆👌 Thanks!
Great indepth review guys!!!
So I'm an MEJ and want to drive a good sounding ICE with a manual as long as I can. But admittedly if I had to drive an electric, maybe for a daily, this car does sound like it will be the most exciting and engaging EV to drive.
Two of my favorite TH-camrs. Definitely want to see more of this series
It's Friday, Cammisa and Hagerty dropped a video. Mashing the like button, closing the office door, and kicking up my feet! Cheers!
I absolutely love that they are trying. Most companies tout EVs as silent commuter cars. They saw a thing they are being encouraged to do by regulations and thought about the enthusiast. They made a really good effort and listened to all the people whining on the Internet about the soulless nature of EVs. Bravo Hyundai. Bravo!
What an interesting and well done vehicle! Hyundai is doing some great work to bridge the gap between car enthusiasts of all types. Absolutely love this thing!
Love this! My two "go-to's" for car content on TH-cam in one show? Yes please!!!!
Love this combo!
OMG that supersonic upshift is, obv soo gimmicky, but sooo cool!!! hahaha
34:43 Jason had me at 'I'd rather (have) a car that's interesting. I would rather have a Miata.' He's right you know. And with proper suspension and exhaust you've got one of the best cars you can buy.
This is one of my favorite videos on youtube ever. Two of my favorite car people ever. Thank you.
I would have never thought of these two working so well together. Please keep this show going. Great watch
N stands for Namyang, a city in Korea where Hyundai's R&D center is located.
Really? Because they have said it stands for Nürburgring. They are based there. They have a taxi service there.
Love it! I am a fan of both Jason and Vin and together they are great!
Well that's a pairing I didn't see coming, but it works really well. Hope to see more of Jason and Vin together
Hmm. I'm somehow not seeing the chemistry in this one. Jason's solo videos are much more enjoyable.
100% agree. His solo stuff is interesting and compelling. Here, it seemed he would get interrupted when getting into his analysis.
The way my jaw DROPPED at the supersonic backfire oh my god
It's fake
This should've had b-roll of the car, both static and driving interspersed throughout the video, or at the very least multiple cabin shots of the presenters. The flow between Jason Camissa and Vin Anatra is fantastic, and I hope we get to see more of this!
Definitely need one of Jason’s classic videos for this car! 💯
Honestly, I want to hate it. I really do. BUT Hyundai, specifically the N division, is absolutely crushing it. The i30n, Elantra N and the late Veloster N absolutely RULE.
Evolution sound was base on sequential gear. If you've heard the TCR Class sound, you'll agree with me.
Just listen to the sound of the Hyundai TCR in Nürburgling .
If someone says he don't like that sound, he don't know about seqeuential gear box.
Not sequential you mean "straight cut" as in the whining high pitched sound is caused by a motorsports transmission having a straight cut tooth profile for maximum strength, rather than the helical profile of a normal road car.
Because each gear tooth hits it's neighbours mating tooth across it's full width at one moment, this produces a very specific set of nodal frequencies, whereas the helical teeth profile slides together the teeth in a long smooth action. That means less noise (quieter in absolute terms) but also a more white noise because the fundamental mating frequency is less dominant. It also means less absolute strength, perhaps counter intuitively, as you might immagine smacking the whole tooth together is worse than gently sliding them together, but with the straight cut profile, the entire width of the profile is always carrying the load, whereas a helical profile causes a point load, and hence high stress/deformation zone as the teeth first meet and eventually part.......
OK. I like this already, only 10 minutes in. I like and respect both of these guys, and they make a good pair. Hooray for a legit new review.
This was so much fun they bounced off each other really well, the whole video was entraining, and I now know Hyundai can make a fun electric suv. I want more of this.
"Vin Anatra" has to be the coolest name since Frank Sinatra.
N의 총알을 이제 한발 쏜것이다.
I love my Elantra N and seeing this makes me want to make this my very next car. Hyundai is nailing it with the N division...
This is great, keep them coming!

N is because they were tuned for the Nurburgring, not because it comes after M
N stands for both Namyang which is a division in South Korea and the birthplace of the N brand, and the Nürburgring racetrack.
It’s actually not the Nurburgring, it’s for Namyang which is where Hyundai develops its performance cars.
Nope. Namyang, where Hyundai's R&D center is.
@griffins750 If you pay attention, it is 2 N stack on top of each other. So, it stands for both Nurburgring and Namyang.
@@merrichoang6858 they’ve been lying to us all along!!! It’s really “NN” 💀💀💀
13:59 I think the reason they are simulating the Elantra N, is due to the fact that they can extensively test and replicate the feelings and noises of an Elantra N. But I do agree that they will eventually do OTA updates to incorporate more noises. Start with what you know.

Kill me if you want but I think this is closest to reinventing Lancia Delta Integrale in last 20 years. It has performance in wrong shape and is giant killer on a road.
Love seeing Vin here! Awesome collab! His thinking of being in 90s/2000s cars mirrors mine. People complain about interiors and I’ve never cared coming from an evo lol

I agree with most of viewers, more pictures of the car please, more beauty shots maybe. The guys' comments are just gold.
JV team bringing us good content here! I have a '22 SEL RWD, and I cannot wait to try the N and the rear wiper!
These two are perfect together. The reaction to the "Supersonic" afterburner sound effect is priceless. If there was a bit of post-production b-reel around the ongoing conversation, that would be great (like showing the 21" forged wheels, brakes, triangle CHMSL, etc). Really well done here.
What I am amazed by is the progression of EV cars and trucks/SUV's over the last 3 years. And based off this review...manufacturers are finally listening to thier driving audience on what they want in an EV. This will cause other manufacturers to up thier game.
