Waldner"s level of anticipation, blocking, placing... His ability to adapt to the moments of the game... You can see how he changed to put pressure on Liu with his backhand on the 3rd set when Liu was trying to corner him in there... It"s unbelievable how he counter attacks as well... No words, just GOAT.

I would like to add some background information behind this game:
      1. In year 2000, ITTF decided to change the ball size from 38mm to 40mm. This brought a huge change to the game, especially the decreasing of the ball speed and spin. The biggest weapons of Liu were attacking speed, and serving spin. Therefore, the ball size changing totally ruined Liu's play style. If you check old video before the ball size changing, Waldner was really hard to win Liu even once.
      2. In year 2000, another big thing happened on Liu. Liu got detected using Doping by mistake. This was a huge shock to him, and he tried very hard to finally prove that it was a wrong detection. However, during the appeal period, Liu couldn't join normal training anymore.
I think it was a miracle for Liu to get 3rd place in 2000 olympic games. No question that both of Waldner and Liu are legendary players in TT history, and they are competitors with each other.

@@biyu19850822 That's not the whole story.During Waldner's time the Chinese didn't play in non Grand slam tournaments to keep the Europeans unfamiliar with their style.Kong Linghui was one of the first players to play in Europe but he didn't play 3rd ball attack at all.According to Liu by the 2000 Olympics Waldner learned how to read his serves.Once Waldner figured Liu's serves out it was game over for Liu.The change to 40mm didn't hurt Liu so much cause he never played with spin;short pips do not produce much spin.On the contrary,it made his backhand side less vulnerable.Liu was a one trick pony. That's why the Chinese steered away from his style coping the shakehand game of the Europeans with Kong Linghui,Zhang Zike and co.

@@dickn.ormous1064 So it took Waldner 5 years and dozens of matches being destroyed by prime Liu to only figure out how to return none-prime Liu's serve? Great achievement no doubt about it :)

    • @dickn.ormous1064

@@sanyasyniushkevych1868 Liu didn't have a prime as his style was solely based on his serve and return of serve, his rally skills were always subpar.Besides,in 2000 he was only 24.He simply had a very limited style and couldn't adapt once Waldner improved his return. It didn't take Waldner dozens of matches to beat him. From '92 to '99 they only played 5 times.Their head to head is 5-4.Beating a much younger player is not a small feat.
