My grandparents are buried at Glen Haven Memorial Park in Kagel Canyon and after watching this video it reminded me of that place. Dying grass, uneven grave markers and a very unkempt appearance. It's also the only cemetery I know of that is totally open with no gates, walls or fences.

This shows why I really hate flat grave markers. Even in well kept cemeteries (which this is clearly not) they tend to settle and sink into the ground. And they suffer from the elements, being walked on and lawn mowers rolling over them. And of course, they are simply boring.
Where my family is buried all I have to do is go into the office and ask them to raise the head stones. Check and see if they do that if you know anyone who has had to settle for one.
Great vids and I find myself captivated on who you'll call out next! While Oliver Hardy did die of cardiac arrest (heart attack), in the years working up to his passing, he had nearly doubled in weight until his doctor told him "Lose the weight now or lose your life." So he search the Hollywood crowd and found a doctor who promised a radical treatment and in the first two months, he lost nearly 200 lbs....and that's when his heart basically said "I can't handle this anymore."
During my time working in the studios, I lived near Valhalla and visited from time to time. It wasn't so badly kept in the early 2000s. I remember how beautiful the ceiling of the Portal of the Folded Wings was, and thinking that was a very sad name for it. It always makes me think of every brave soul who did what we consider now a very basic, every day thing - traveling by air - and perhaps lost their lives while doing it. That shrine is devoted to all of them.

In the city I live there is the oldest cemetery in town, which is abandoned. Most cemeteries are poorly kept up as they have run out of space, no way to make money. Being buried is slowly going to be a thing of the past..sad, as there is so much history at a cemetery. I love learning about the lives of the ones buried.
Arthur, my daughter and I are huge fans and as Afro-Indigenous people,we especially appreciate how you always include people of color in your tours: many of whom have been overlooked.
@@60toodles It's more complicated than that, isn't it? You are non-optionally required to pay into a maintenance fund, which will supposedly support the upkeep of the cemetery in perpetuity. At least that was how it worked with my mother at a big, for profit cemetery. So no, I shouldn't HAVE to also do maintenance myself. Although I will, if needed, when I visit. But what if I don't live nearby? My father is buried several states away. If his grave gets overgrown, is it my fault for not flying out regularly to trim the grass or brush dirt off his stone? If part of the "sales pitch" is that the grave will be maintained using the money all of the families of the interred have paid for that purpose, the fault lies with the cemetery, not the families (and for older burials, it is less likely there even is any immediate family in a position to do grave maintenance).
Sad to see cemeteries in such sad shape. As much as I'm certain these families paid for their loved ones' final resting places, this is a shame to have conditions such as these.

I really get interested in cemeteries. Your videos are very well done. The information about those who are not often mentioned is a really wonderful thing you do. They should be remembered too, as they make important contributions to how the audience sees the end product. Of course, the actors and actresses get the most attention, but where would they be without the muscians, make-up artists, and all the other people who contribute their talent to the industry. So, I subscribed because your videos were done with such taste.
Sad. The fact you had to dig up the gravestone of that poor woman. A trailblazer just forgotten. I didn't see flowers on any gravestones. Are they not allowed? The people that own the cemetery should be ashamed. Total disrespect.
retrobebop61 Im sure that they allow flowers. The cemeteries here have VERY STRICT RULES on what you can place on the graves and people LOVE TO STEAL STUFF TOO.
I grow up in Los Angeles area and never visited these historical cemeteries!! Very interesting! My parents house is not far from.Inglewood Park Cemetery and Holy Cross up the hill on Slauson! i was scared Dracula would wake up and come walking down Slauson and Crenshaw!!

Wikipedia says he died 4 days later , one day after her funeral, he was only 54 and 8 years younger than her, guess he was stressed out over her death , but she had lung cancer and it was not sudden. She had been married before him but she was his 1st and only wife, he was a Sound guy on Jack Benny Show which she worked on where they met

I live in Yakima Washington. Never heard of anyone having the name Yakima as a first name. Have seen it as a last name in the opening credits of Gone with the Wind.
Hollywood Graveyard thank you so much for these videos. Particularly highlighting the forgotten Silent Era stars and other lesser lights. I will never get to the USA but this is so good.
You comments about their unkept graves most have hit a nerve. While visiting on Saturday afternoon, and following this video, I noticed the perimeter of the graves are weedwacked regularly. BTW, it was so easy to follow along and see them for myself. Thank you!
Yakima was the stunt double in the "Burning of Atlanta" scene from Gone with the Wind. He doubled for Clark Gable. that was a live shot that could only be done one.
It's so sad that these amazing and wonderful famous actors and singers Graves are just grown over 😢 just goes to show you no matter who you are we all end up the same way.
If my loved ones grave looked like these, there would be hell to pay. I got after Forest Lawn Cemetery in RIchmond VA about some of my loved ones graves and they fixed things IMMEDIATELY. Unfortunately a lot of these stars families may have died so there is no one to ensure that the graves are kept up.
This was done years ago, I hope that they have restored the grounds which are in deplorable condition. At the very least let volunteers spread some Weed and Seed. This hurts my heart. I appreciate your videos. You are an excellent narrator and film maker. Thank you for remembering those souls in such an informative and non exploitive manner.
Thank you very much for the great work.It make you think all those people, some of them very known, and famous,celebritys,..at the end all of us,rich and poor we going to the same place. Is fair..

I didn't know that Gail Russell rested here. She was such a presence in her films. Too bad her life was so sad and tragic. Another actress you should include in a future video - I mean, come on, it's the LEAST you can do - is the great Symona Boniface. She is one of the most under-appreciated straight women in film - let alone The Three Stooges. That's right, she was the recipient of many pies in the face - which she took with grace and dignity, but her most famous line is probably "You DISGRACEFUL vagabonds!!!" which, when people realize who you are talking about, will recite automatically. Let's not forget her contributions.
I believe that Symona Boniface's most famous line is "Young man, you act as though the sword of damocles is hanging over your head". And Moe replies "Lady, you must be psychic".
+Jason Stewart : I was wondering the exact same thing! This absolutely angers me. How abhorrently disrespectful. That doesn’t even take into account the exorbitant fees they charge for the plot, the vault, the opening and closing of the grave and the headstone itself. If my family were buried there, I would be looking through the purchase contracts and see if maintaining the cemetery was included in the ‘services’. If it were, I would be calling a lawyer. No way I wouldn’t sue them civilly for the money it would take to cover reinterment and the legal fees needed for the action. That’s absolutely inexcusable the disrespectful way they’re treating that cemetery! Shameful. Just shameful.
It's fitting that Arthur Q. Bryan's final resting place is called Valhalla, since his most famous performance as Elmer Fudd was in "What's Opera, Doc?", a parody of Wagner's Ring Cycle.
I guess I find it sad that no more family around to visits most these grave sites, so sad that you had to dig and clear the stone. I'm very impressed on your research and presentation of all your cemetery tours. I wish every grave had a button that you could push to give a short clip like you do for these people. Everyone life is interesting I feel. Everyone whom walked this planet has a story. You do great work.

Of course, the actors and actresses get the most attention, but where would they be without the muscians, make-up artists, and all the other people who contribute their talent to the industry. So, I subscribed because your videos were done with such taste.
i will forever support Hollywood graveyard best you tube channel ever
Run down, drab looking cemetery. Excellent episode, though. TY🌹
I really enjoy your video's. I Like how informative they are. Keep up the good work!!
Thank you Pamela!
If you haven’t seen Stan and Ollie, I highly recommend watching it. It’s phenomenal!!
I just happened to come upon these videos and can’t stop watching them... LOVE THEM.. WELL put TOGETHER.

Update for anyone worried about the condition of Valhalla, I visited ti yesterday, and there has been a lot of work done there. Looks good now, stones are (mostly) no longer buried, grass looks nice, place is maintained. Still some work to be done, but is night and day better than it was 6 years ago.
Good to hear.
crazy fact about Bea Benaderet she buried with her second husband who died of a heart attack at her funeral
Jessica Audsley REALLY?
Wikipedia says he died 4 days later , one day after her funeral, he was only 54 and 8 years younger than her, guess he was stressed out over her death , but she had lung cancer and it was not sudden. She had been married before him but she was his 1st and only wife, he was a Sound guy on Jack Benny Show which she worked on where they met
So, glad you cleaned Nellie's grave. May she rest in Peace.
I just can say thank you for I've learned a lot from your videos! I hope I can visit those places myself soon. If I'm fortunate, I´ll be living in LA next year. A big hello from Venezuela! Keep up the good work!
R.I.P 🌹 Leigh Harline (when you wish upon a star). 👈🏻love this song! There was a lot of Beautiful actresses back in the day!
The research of this channel is unmatched. Great job!! Just gained a subscriber.
It's like I can't get enough of Bea Benederic when I'm watching Burns And Allen, Beverly Hillbillies or Petticoat Junction or the Flintstones or a Warner Brothers cartoon she was so great
I live in Yakima Washington. Never heard of anyone having the name Yakima as a first name. Have seen it as a last name in the opening credits of Gone with the Wind.
Man, this cemetery is in terrible shape.
Thank you for the upload Arthur.
Watching + enjoying from NSW, Australia.
Thank you for your very informative video on who and their own contribution to the music and film makers of the past... so interesting😊👍
It's so sad that these amazing and wonderful famous actors and singers Graves are just grown over 😢 just goes to show you no matter who you are we all end up the same way.
Thank you for bringing this video for me to enjoy which I did.
Yet I must say the cemetery grounds are in such sad state.
Oliver Hardy died just down the street in his Mother-in-Laws home. He had suffered a severe stroke at his wife sold their home and moved him there.
Love your video's! Im from the Netherlands so hopefully 1 day i can visit myself. Thank you for uploading this!
Thank you Liza...hello from LA!
I love your vlogs,so interesting I can’t stop watching them,I appreciate all the time and information you put in,excellent
Do you offer tours? If not you should. I love these videos... So classy and informative. I can watch them over and over.
I offer private tours to some Patreon supporters.
The cemetery is in crappy shape... Its upsetting to see these graves in bad shape...
Thank you very much for the great work.It make you think all those people, some of them very known, and famous,celebritys,..at the end all of us,rich and poor we going to the same place. Is fair..
Another well done, quality video.
Seeing the resting places, seems to make me closer in knowing them. Odd but seems like. Thanks AD.
Loved Your video and I hope You'll do one at Holy Cross in Culver City.
Woodlawn in Santa Monica is interesting, and plenty haunted, if that's your thing. Paul Henreid rests there.
Very Beautifull, i love your Präsentation and the Story from the Stars and Co Stars from Hollywood and other- in Germany we präsent only Curd Jürgens,Fritz Lang and
Oskar Werner exzellent old Movie Stars from Österreich and Germany !
Thanks Auther I love to walk with you in your tours in the cemeterys
Bea Benaderet was originally supposed to be Ethel Mertz on I love lucy. She even made a guest appearance on the show
What a damn shame , the condition of this place. Is it the owners don't care or is this some public funding issue?
By far the most neglected cemetery in the Hollywood Graveyard series.
The condition of this cemetery is truly sad.
Seeing the cemetery in that condition hurts my heart. I hope the renovations you talked about have been followed through.
It's fitting that Arthur Q. Bryan's final resting place is called Valhalla, since his most famous performance as Elmer Fudd was in "What's Opera, Doc?", a parody of Wagner's Ring Cycle.
Loved bea she was amazing
I guess I find it sad that no more family around to visits most these grave sites, so sad that you had to dig and clear the stone. I'm very impressed on your research and presentation of all your cemetery tours. I wish every grave had a button that you could push to give a short clip like you do for these people. Everyone life is interesting I feel. Everyone whom walked this planet has a story. You do great work.
I like your hat and glasses. its a cool look!
😢😢😢😢😢😢😢 we miss all the celebrities
Geez caretakers of Valhalla, PRESERVE THIS MEMORIAL GROUNDS THIS INSTANT.
I just noticed on Madame Sul-Te-Wan's marker that she was from here in Louisville, KY. Thanks for the extra edu-ma-cation on that fact. :)
