Pulled the trigger on the Uranus C pro today, been a long time coming, the videos on the subject certainly influenced my purchase. I look forward to putting down the planetary and picking up the DSO. No other camera even comes close to whats been packed into the Uranus C pro for the price. I nearly struggled between uranus C and the pro version but decided the extra few $ were well worth the effort for the additions it brings. Thanks Luke, much appreciated testing the waters!
It arrived yesterday, First light setup last night about 1/2 hour on IC 1805 only due to clouds and WOW!!!.@@lukomatico I agree I think I'm going to love it as well! Thanks for all the info you supplied!
I can not wait for my Uranus C pro! Gonna be paired with an Antlia APL-T fliter, on a new Askar 65PHQ! Thanks for the video, now I'm even more hyped!! Clear Skies!
Awesome upload as always Luke, nice job! Love my Apollo-M Max and (non-cooled) Uranus-C…Player One is making some really compelling gear at an amazing price, as you say! Thinking of grabbing an Ares M Pro and looking forward to seeing your results! Have a great weekend, bud! 🔭📸👍🏻
Thanks very much indeed bud! :-D I'm chuffed with the quality of the gear Player One are putting out, it's seriously impressive! Really think they'll do amazing over the coming years! :-) Clear skies mate!
Luke that base price of $550 'US, which is roughly £435 in UK pounds sterling, has just blown me away!? I'm 10 months into my astro-imaging journey, after years of visual astro, and I have been on the lookout for a used cooled camera, to progress from my DSLR astro-imaging, and after seeing this video, I can now afford a brand new cooled camera, which is awesome! I am eager to see how well it performs in testing Luke! If will have to be pretty had to put me off buying one, because the price is unbelievable Luke!! Thanks for showing me/everyone these amazingly priced cameras Luke!👌👍
It's pretty nuts hey Wes! I can't believe the price point it's came in at, unreal! I'm seriously looking forwards to testing this thing out on some clear nights! :-D
Great video Luke and I appreciate how you test these in both Sharpcap and NINA. I'll have to say I'm very tempted to get the Uranus-C Pro color camera. I have an ASI 2600MM pro but wow, this is a simply amazing little camera for the money. Looking forward to first light tests.
Dang that new Uranus c looks awesome! I started with the zwo 585mc and for an extra 150 and you get cooled and that Tilt plate that seems like a super good value! And the carbon fiber is beautiful
Now that cooled 533 looks very nice. As you know I have the Saturn M which I love. That ares may well be on my list this Xmas. Looking forward to your results. Clear skies mate.
Luke, that price on the Uranus is unbelievable. I have been looking around for a camera to buy and I think I may have just found it! I will be waiting in anticipation for your tests under the sky!
That's awesome to hear mate! - I think you'll be impressed if you do go that route :-) It's a beautiful camera from what I've seen so far! (brief tests in-between clouds lol!)
Hey mate! - no tilt to speak of really, even when used on my RASA 11 :-) it's probably just luck of the draw though, many cameras do need tilt adjustment from all manufacturers. Clear skies!
Great overview! Thinking about going mono and pair the Ares-M Pro with a Samyang. How's the cooling on that camera? What's the delta temp you've achieved?
Hi Luko. Thanks for the video. BTW, have you already received the new Player One Neptune 664c? Looks a pretty interesting option. Wondering if we can do DSO with this sensor as well
Hey there my friend! - no new P1 cams incoming to my address as far as I know! I'll maybe have to make a request for review haha! :-D Clear skies mate!
Hey Luke, awesome review mate👍 Very detailed and informative. I tell ya mate, if I wasn’t tied into the ZWO brand, I’d be buying one of these😀 They look incredible Luke, will be interested to see some images from these cameras! Keep up the great work mate! Player One are lucky to have you review their gear in a thorough and honest review 😀 Clear skies mate!
Hey Simon mate! - Hope you're doing well! :-D I totally understand the feeling aye, the ASIAIR is a lovely system to use - superb bit of kit! I'd love to see something to compete with the ASIAIR come from another manufacturer, but supporting everything rather than just one brand you know? It'd be a top-seller! Clear skies to you too bud!
True Scott, haha! - I did it too, but I'll admit to missing the ASIAIR ease-of-use every now and then LOL! :-D (I don't miss being tied solely to team red though!)
@@ScottDavies True, I’m untying the knot with my obsey rig, taking off ASIAIR and fitting the Mele quiter 3 and will be running it with Nina, hopefully a video to follow soon!😀 Haven’t got the spare cash though to change cameras😀
Interesting looking cameras, great overview Luke ! maybe it could make an interesting video on how to adjust the sensor tilt (if necessary) You mentioned it somewhere in a live stream, but it was a bit hard to follow
Thanks Siegfried! - A tilt adjustment video could be great someday yeah! Probably a bit of a pain to setup though as I'd have to deliberately sabotage one of my cameras LOL!
Wow a cooled imx585! 2.9 micron pixels and the sensor is super clean even non-cooled. This would be a great replacement for imx183 based camera (so far). Also the full well is very deep too! Well done Player One! This thing will fly off the shelves! Now we just need a cooled imx715 or even better imx511 wink-wink 🙂 Excellent unboxing Luke as always! Clear Skies!
In NINA, the Aberration Inspector shows the adjustments needed for each corner of the sensor, but with the way the tilt adapter was installed here, the adjustment screws are not actually in line with the sensor corners. I wonder how this would actually work at the end. Great video, as always.
Hey mate! - I would suppose it won't matter in the end, someone may have tilt in a corner which aberration inspector would be useful for, but someone else may have tilt across a flat edge which aberration inspector wouldn't be so good for - swings and roundabouts I guess! :-D (you've always got the option to use the 3-point tilter too, like a normal system)
Hey Luke, thanks for reviewing these cameras for us! I used to have a 533MC Pro and loved it but ended up selling it. I now have the ZWO 585 and don't mind it, but want to upgrade to cooled again. Do you think the Uranus C can compete with the IMX533 sensor from Player One? Which would be the better buy? Thanks
Hey there mate! That's a good question, and honestly I think that the 585 can indeed compete with the 533, but they aren't cameras that I personally view as being in direct competition with one another - such differing spec in terms of spectrum sensitivity and pixel size that it would be an apples to oranges comparison I'd say. All that aside, the cooled 585 from Player One has been a dream so far, loving it. Cheers! :-)
These cameras look really great. The sensor size on the Uranus was a little too small for what I want, but the Artemis looks really really promising... and tempting. Player One Astronomy is really turning out to be a great contender in the market.
Cheers mate! - If you're in the market for a OSC then I'd personally choose the Uranus-C Pro over the Artemis-C Pro myself as I just don't like amp-glow and the imx 294 can be difficult to calibrate, but that's just me! :-D I'm glad to see so many nice offerings now from Player One though, it's awesome!
Hi Luke - thanks for the video, very informative and led me to get the Uranus-C Pro. Camera and contents are great, camera drive installed fine but the only issue I am currently facing is I cannot get anything to run with the device port, be it ZWO EAF, EFW or guidescope - have everything running through EQ8-R Pro hub and not had any previous issues so not sure if you also encountered this during your trial?
Hey mate! So glad to hear you've got your camera up and running 👍👍 Re: the issue with the device port, I would say try another cable if at all possible - I had a similar issue once and couldn't figure it out, but changed the cable just as a hunch and sure enough, sorted! 👍
Hi Luke - yeah I ended up replacing the cables but also found it was a length of cable issue. From the PC through the EQ8 mount USB hub and then to the camera resulted in disconnects - replaced with afew shorter cables and now all working as expected! @@lukomatico
I'm liking the Uranus C pro good price & love the carbon fibre livery to, makes a change from seeing red everywhere lol. Does the camera still fit inside the hard case with the rear facing tilt plate? Can't wait to see what it can do mate clear skies!!
Absolutely agree mate! they look bloomin' superb! RE: fitting in the case with the 4p tilter, you know that's a really good question and one I can't immediately test haha - I've got them both mounted on the scopes! Gut feeling is probably still fits, but maybe a squeeze! Clear skies mate
Thanks for doing this video! As i've commented on a previous one, I too just took ownership of the Ares-C Pro. Finally had one night (albeit windy) to test it out. As I'm new to these cameras, how important is offset? I set my offset to 50 and a single 300s sub came out amazing. Looking forward to sinking hours on a target. I also did a tilt analysis with ASTAP and out of the box, bolted on (without that extra tilt plate) it was 13% tilted, and the square was pretty right. Which is impressive straight out of the box. One thing i struggled with is focusing, so used to DSLR live view and zooming in. Are you able to do a video with one of these cameras on how you not only focus, but do then finer tilt adjustments?
Thanks so much for watching Damien! Really glad you've had the opportunity to test out the Ares, that's excellent news! Regarding offset, as long as things aren't clipping on your histogram then don't worry about it too much mate! Glad that your tilt is pretty low, that should be easy enough to fix with iterative movements and testing! :-) On the note of focusing, if you don't have an electronic auto focuser then investing in a bahtinov mask is a superb way to make sure you nail focus every time 👍 Using one is simple - Slew to a bright star, put the mask on the scope, start a live exposure loop and make the necessary adjustments on your scope focus wheel to align the diffraction spikes. Hope that makes sense!
@@lukomatico hey. Yes that's what I currently do. I'm just finding it really finicky. Previously I could 'zoom in' on live view with APT with DSLR. But this doesn't seem to be an option with the player one cam. Also, in sharpcap, the camera appears 3 times as player one cam 1 then 2 etc. I always choose 1. Not sure why it appears so much. 🤷♂️
@@DamienBoath hey mate! It sounds like the problem could be that you're using the ascom drivers rather than the native release, check the P1 site for the latest ones 👍
Holy WOW! Both cameras. However, as I mentioned before, I am in the market to upgrade my ZWO 1600 mono camera and this ARES is extremely promising. Thank you for the review, Luke.
Thank you for watching and giving your support Pat! :-D These cameras look like an incredible value proposition I think, I feel very lucky to be testing them!
These look like fantastic cameras, really looking forward to seeing the images these produce. I love the carbon/red colour scheme, if the IMX571 cameras came in that colour scheme I don't think I could help myself as they would be a perfect match for my Stellamira 90 ED's.
Look like nice cameras. The 533 is similar in price to ZWO's offering but I see the Player One has extras like the bigger Full Well depth, more RAM, higher fps etc so would suggest it's better value for money than the ZWO 533. And I am with you, life is too short to have to worry about amp glow :)
Cant wait to see how the cooled Uranus compares to the non cooled one. (hopefully it makes no difference so I don't need to spend more on the cooled one :P )
Do you have a comparison of image quality between the uranus cooled dso camera and the planetary camera? I saw your earlier video on the un-cooled one and was extremely curious because if I can save several hundred dollars by not getting the heatsink and get still very good results I'd prefer to do that and upgrade to a cooled camera down the line.
Potentially mate! It's not really much shinier than any of the standard 'shiny anodised' astro cams so I think it'll probably not be an issue, but never say never with a RASA lol! they are veeeeery finicky beasts! Cheers for watching mate!
Totally agree mate! - it's at the right price where people will be able to seriously decide between a modified dslr or going down the cooled OSC route in a very similar price bracket!
Great video Luke, and really nice cameras…I would have thought the 4 point tilter adapter should have the adjuster screws aligned with the 4 corners of the sensor and not the 4 sides, as you have instructed…. as it’s the corners that should be adjusted…..🤔🤔
Cheers mate! :-D I guess you'd only adjust the corners if only the corners themselves had tilt though, what about it if it's flat across the sides or top! I appreciate you watching my friend! Clear skies :-)
@@lukomatico then you adjust 2 corners, normally that is how tilt adjusters work it’s always the corners that should be adjusted not the flat sides You could also say what if one corner was out with tilt how would you adjust that with your method ?? You would have to adjust two screws also so same issue
It's as long as it is short! For some tilt problems you'd be better off with corner mounted, for other tilt problems you'd be better off with side-mounted :-D
Hi Luke. I'm a little late here, but I was looking for a cooled camera with a pixel size less than 3.0um and found the Uranus-C Pro. I'm afraid I'm immersed in the ZWO ecosystem right now, so I'd have to make some adjustments. Physically, would I need to buy anything other than I already have, i.e., could I use the ZWO spacer/filter drawer setup I have with this camera? (I realize the ASIAir can't control it so I'd have to have something else to control it.)
Hey Greg! - I'm sorry about the late reply to this, I missed the comment initially! You could absolutely use all the same ZWO spacers/filterdrawer etc that you have right now with the Player One Uranus-C Pro :-) No problem at all, in fact I'm doing that on one of my own rigs right now! Hope that helps!
@@lukomatico Thanks so much for the reply and the advice, Luke! I appreciate it and will have to think about possibly trying this out! Looks like you've had excellent results with this brand of camera.
I just picked up this camera after playing with your data and debating for some time. First light was last night. I’m processing now, but not sure that I’m doing bias frames correctly. How short should they be for this camera? I’ve read mixed opinions and nothing specific to this camera. Thanks in advance.
Hey there mate! Re: bias, generally speaking for both these cameras they're quite tolerant of settings/parameters for bias, like most CMOS cameras though I'd recommend not going below around 50ms for exposure 👍 I hope the videos/data were useful! Cheers 👍
@@lukomatico Thank you! That helps a lot. I have watched your videos for quite some time since re-entering the hobby. Things really changed a lot in the 12 years between. Your channel is one of about 3 I make sure to look for new content and I’ve learned a lot from you and I appreciate the data shares.
Hey there mate! - I couldn't say for sure as I've never had an ACS, but my gut feeling is that it should be a standard 12v DC 5.5x2.1 connector for both yeah. Cheers!
God I want the Ares-M so bad. How good is the Player One online store shipping to Europe? The only retailer I see in Spain is a little more expensive than the ASI option and doesn't have the bundle with the filter wheel.
Thanks so much for watching mate!! - RE: shipping, i've had import duty to pay but it's never been much! always works absolutely fine & faster than expected with tracking end-to-end! :-) Clear skies!
I can also confirm ordering direct was straight forward. Bought the Uranus C early this year. Arrived inside 2 weeks & duties where about £40 I think. If I'm wrong I'll correct this message but I'm in Mauritius at the moment, with the camera!....
Hey Luke, could you please post the actual size of the new Uranus C Pro camera, specifically the length? I would like to check the clearance of my Nexstar Evolution mount before ordering. Neither the official Player One website nor the retailer sites state the exact dimensions.
Hey there mate! - I've just measured it, from faceplate to the rear of the cam it's 85mm - you'll also have to allow for the USB/power connectors on top of that :-) Hope that helps!
I just did the plate swap on mine and I noticed that the 3 point plate has a small foam ring under it surrounding the sensor area that the 4 point plate does not have. My guess is this stays on the 3 point plate (I did not try to pull it off, but it feels like it is glued in place) and I just thought it was odd that one plate has it and the other doesn't. Do you have any idea what it is for?
Hey mate! I think the 3 point tilter uses a foam gasket to prevent light leaks at large tilt angles so that's what it probably is, I'm not sure about the 4p tilter having any foam though, I can't remember if mine has it or not! Sorry! Good luck for some clear skies mate 👍
This is going to sound stupid but how the heck did you connect the Artemis to the filter wheel? The 36mm filter wheel has holes that are 62mm apart and the cam has holes 53mm apart. They don't match. And there's no freaking manuals on their site!
Best shot would be to send P1 a message on their Facebook page, they seem quite active on there - probably someone with the same cam/wheel will see it and be able to help too 🙏 Good luck and sorry I couldn't be more useful mate!
I have shot some of the same targets with my Uranus-C uncooled camera and compared them to Luke's images. I haven't seen much difference. I honestly think the newer sensors need cooling much less than previous sensors. Take that with a grain of salt, though. I live in Canada and nights are cooler here, in general. Winter nights are much cooler. In a hot setting, like the American Mojave, it might be different.
@@lukomatico yeah darks seemed to fix that issue, it looked like bunched up blue walking noise but only happened in the blue channel, after I added darks it went away just weird that it never happened before and never happened on the uncooled Uranus c, so I made a dark library so I wouldn’t have to worry about it, just confused as to why it happened only thing different was the camera and filter drawer the uncooled never showed that with or without any calibration frames but picture quality I’m amazed should have switched to a cooled camera a longer time ago
Just received my Uranus C, your video has helped me assemble it ready to go. Thanks.

Thanks so much for watching Pete! :-D They really do look swish don't they mate!
Thanx for re-view. Just to confirm, as not mentioned. You need to have your own 12V Power Supply, to use the Cooling Function? Supply not provided?
That's right mate! you have to supply 12v dc, power supply not included :-)
Agreed Logan haha! Life really is too short to be wasting it on calibration issues lol! :-D Clear skies my friend!
Cant wait to see how the cooled Uranus compares to the non cooled one. (hopefully it makes no difference so I don't need to spend more on the cooled one :P )
Haha! :-D I hear you mate, I'll hopefully soon get some clear skies and be able to really test it!
Love the thumbnail 😂
Haha!! - Thanks so much mate :-D
Hi mate, the cooled cam is better slightly due to being able to keep itself chilled, but it's not better by a huge margin :-)
Hey Luke, don’t you think the glossy carbon gelcoat housing could cause some diffractions/halos/reflections in a hyperstar/rasa configuration?
Potentially mate! It's not really much shinier than any of the standard 'shiny anodised' astro cams so I think it'll probably not be an issue, but never say never with a RASA lol! they are veeeeery finicky beasts! Cheers for watching mate!
I think this is the first cooled 585 camera on the market. At that price.. I bet that unlocks cooled camera's for a lot of people.
@@lukomatico then you adjust 2 corners, normally that is how tilt adjusters work it’s always the corners that should be adjusted not the flat sides
You could also say what if one corner was out with tilt how would you adjust that with your method ??
You would have to adjust two screws also so same issue
It's as long as it is short! For some tilt problems you'd be better off with corner mounted, for other tilt problems you'd be better off with side-mounted :-D
@@lukomatico yes, I guess so, keep up the good work 👍🏻
Thank you mate! You too 👍👍
Re: bias, generally speaking for both these cameras they're quite tolerant of settings/parameters for bias, like most CMOS cameras though I'd recommend not going below around 50ms for exposure 👍
I hope the videos/data were useful!
The price of the Uranus-C Pro is ridiculous! I haven't even had first light on my Uranus-C yet...and now you've got me eyeballing the Pro! 😅
It's pretty crazy priced hey! :-D Really looks like an awesome camera! Thanks for watching mate!
Is the 12V plug for the cooled camera the same size as for the ACS for the planetary cameras?
Perfect, thanks!!!
Are there threads on the inside of that 1 1/4" nose piece so a person can attach a UV/IR cut filter?
Yes indeed! :-)
Ordered it IMX585 is amazing!
Superb mate!! :-D huge congratulations!!
Thanks Luke now I want to spend money again..... LOL
🤣🤣🤣
I'm so sorry mate, haha!! :-D
This is going to sound stupid but how the heck did you connect the Artemis to the filter wheel? The 36mm filter wheel has holes that are 62mm apart and the cam has holes 53mm apart. They don't match. And there's no freaking manuals on their site!
I've got the filter wheel connected via the male to male connector myself mate, I didn't bother going for the bolted connection at the moment!
Best shot would be to send P1 a message on their Facebook page, they seem quite active on there - probably someone with the same cam/wheel will see it and be able to help too 🙏
Good luck and sorry I couldn't be more useful mate!
Would love to see a head to head performance comparison of the cooled/uncooled Uranus-C cameras on a warm night!
That'd be cool yeah!! with my RASA it's kinda a pain in the butt to swap cameras though haha!
Thanks for watching mate!
In a hot setting, like the American Mojave, it might be different.
they look to good to use :P
Haha!! :-D they look darn good!
Just got a test run of mine and there is a weird artifact like things in only the blue channel been trying to figure out what it could be
Could be moonlight or reflections in many cases! Can be so many things really, sorry I can't be more help
Glad to hear you've got it sorted mate, and also I'm happy that you're enjoying the cooled dedicated camera life! :-D
What offset do you use the Uranus at?
50 IIRC mate! :-)
At this price point anyone should be able to afford this hobby. Now, someone should come out wa workaround to use them with asiair.
It's a pretty amazing value camera for sure!! I was shocked when I saw the pricing!
yea it is hard to beat camera. too bad it is really hard to buy from turkey and turkish economy is suck.
Sorry to hear that mate! - buying direct from China works ok for me but I guess it's different over here!
Clear skies my friend!
