Hilariously, I always struggle to smell butterscotch in malt whiskies. I’ve even intentionally tasted butterscotch candies, but I still struggle to find it!
Thanks for the love and encouragement! And yeah, I'm loving the dedicated space for recording. Should make content easier to produce. I think you need to make one of these kits and compare it to the one Andrew has! Slàinte, my friends!
Shopped Amazon. Sticker shock. Checked TH-cam and found you. So glad I did!!! Seriously helpful advice for a newbie Bourbon drinker. New to the adult version of drinking anyway!!!!!
Yay! The algorithm was in our favor! Glad you found the channel and that the video was helpful! Keep coming back for more content. Hope I can help you find new bottles to try. Join us on Tuesday evenings for the Live show! Cheers! 🥃
Thanks so much! It's really easy and inexpensive to do and the scents can be "refreshed" after a while. Appreciate you watching and supporting the channel, my friend! 🥃
Great job Lee Ann , I’m sure there are plenty enthusiasts like myself, who loose our ability to recognise that fragrance/smell. So this will be a great exercise to do, reinvigorating our passion to search for that little bit extra. Slainte my friend.
Thank you!!! I'm so happy you are going to give it a try! Let me know how it turns out. Be sure to find an aroma that you have trouble with and include it. I know honey won't be a problem! LOL Be well my friend and thank you SO much for all the support! Slàinte Y'all! 🥃🐊
Brilliant video🙂 I have considering doing something similar several times, but never really imagined I could put together something that would actually work. You definitely rekindled that thought!
Go for it, Ray! It takes more time to gather the ingredients than it does to put together but so worth it! Let me know how yours turns out and what specific aroma do you have trouble identifying. Cheers, friend!
Hi Lee Ann, thanks so much for this great idea! I am going to put together a blind nosing kit for my partner by first raiding the kitchen and also ordering some essential oil kits and mixing some up to make it interesting! Some aromas I am not good at detecting are orchard fruits. What is really interesting is that I didn’t really know what chocolate smells like (I know what it tastes like) until I started nosing whisky and been told to look out for it!
Wonderful! I'm so happy this video was helpful to you. Candles are a great source for Orchard Fruit scents so visit the candle aisle and start sniffing. You can also get wax melts that are scented to put in your kit. Pour a dram that is known to have those flavors (Compass Box Orchard House is a great one) and smell the dram, then smell those scents and try to make the connection. It's amazing how you'll start to pick it out in the future. Let me know how it goes! Cheers! 🥃
This video is EXACTLY what I needed Lee Ann!! I am 7 weeks, trying to get my taste and smell back. I have been buying food like fig newtons and black licorice but DANG, your kit is way better. Thank you so much and will be working on this over the weekend! You are a blessing to this awesome Whisky Community! Cheers!🥃
Yay!!! Glad you like it Bobby. And I REALLY hope you can use it to get your smeller back in working order. UGH! Keep at it and let me know how your kit turns out. Appreciate all your support friend! You have THE best smile in all our whisky community - for sure! Cheers! 🥃🐊
Great video, have wanted a kit like this for a while. Im already thinking about what I can dig out of the spice drawer to make one now. Thanks for sharing your tips and resources 🥃
Awesome video Lee! I know it may not seem like it but I struggle a lot with my nosing and tasting notes. Having a kit like this would help train me to be better at recognizing and articulating what I find in whiskies. I’ve looked at nosing sets in the past but wasn’t willing to invest that much on something I wasn’t sure about. I may have to try this myself.
Thank you George! We can all use a little help with fine tuning our noses. I think it also depends on overall exposure through our lives to certain aromas. So it stands to reason that more things we smell, the more we can make those connections. Cheers, my friend!
I love this video! Great idea, and generous service to us other whisky folk 😎🙏 definitely going to make my own at some point. I always have problems naming some of the things I smell... could be on the tip of my tongue, so familiar, yet can't quite name it. Thanks, Lee Ann 😊
Awesome! Thank you, James!!! Please post your kit once you are done and tag me! I want to know what other scents you come up with. You know whisky and food so we will all be in for a treat! Slainte, my friend! 🥃
Woohoo! This makes me so happy! Peat is a tricky one if you don't have access to it. (I lifted a piece from Kilchoman to bring back home - ssshhhhh - don't tell anyone!) One route you can go is to use peat moss from the garden store. It's similar to the earthy aroma you are wanting to pull from peat. Hope that helps and let me know how the kit turns out! Slàinte Y'all! 🥃🐊
Before you mentioned it, I was thinking about the masterclass at Glengoyne: I did it in February 2019 and it was fun! I still have some of the 200ml I blended on that day...
Oh, can we both go back to Glengoyne and do that class over again?!?!? That was such a fabulous experience. How'd you do on the aroma test? I still have a little bit of my 200ml blend as well! Cheers, Andrew! 🥃
@@ScotchontheBayou That would be great, wouldn't it? As far as I can remember I got about 70% on the test: second best of the group on the day. Not good enough to 'turn pro', but not bad...
Hi Lee Ann. Haven’t got quite like your box but I like looking at the bakery section in the supermarket and buy different essences, oils, spices etc then put them in a tall wooden box that I have. There is so many good things to buy in the bakery section along with nuts, dried fruits coco etc. Also trying different sorts of teas find all helps with finding flavours. Interesting and enjoyable video Lee Ann. slàinte
Great idea!! That's a perfect place to find so many of the aromas we get from whisky. And I love the tea idea, too. I'm kind of a purest and prefer regular tea but can see how the flavored teas would be perfect for learning aromas. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and supporting the channel! Cheers!
@@ScotchontheBayou what a great ide Lee Anne. I’m off to order the bottles. One tea bag I’m going to look out for is Lapsong Souchon. Heard loads of people refer to it in tastings but as an avowed coffee drinker I’ve no idea what it smells like 😉
Humans taste only five (5) things. Humans can distinguish ~32,000 aromas! Most of what we ascribe to "taste" is actually the aroma. When we try to use our nose to figure things out like what's in a dram, we are going to be challenged a bit. Why? Because we evolved to stand upright and primarily use vision to survive. The majority of our brain is organized around learning from our vision. By contrast, things like dogs are low to the ground; most of their brain is organized around learning from what they smell. Dogs would make excellent sommeliers if they could hold a glass! You can train your nose. But don't expect miracles. Like in sports, some folks just excel at a given endeavor. Same with this effort. If you cannot master it, just order a dram you like and be content with what your nose and mouth finds satisfactory. Have a Blessed Day!
Is there a particular aroma you have trouble identifying in whisky? Let me know in the comments below.
