I have to say, I watched you for hours and was totally impressed!! Also, thanks to you, we now have a TON of crab bait for the beach this weekend!! It’s our girls’ first time out on the ocean fishing and the huge bag of fish made our day! Your setup was killer, “you’re killing’ it!” was my understatement of the year. Watching you not have to drop an anchor / not have to move the kayak once was quite impressive. Thank you again and good luck on your adventures!!!
East coast anglers use a Rapala Shad Rap as a diver. They remove the back hook and tie a leader on. I just read that the tribes netted Shad in Lake Washington. In two years I won't have to make a trip south to catch them.
Ever thought of doing some videos on panfish (perch, crappie) in spring and summer months? How to locate them, etc. I’d love to hear your knowledge. Tons of content out there but it all seems to be in other parts of the country and may or may not be relevant here. Awesome content keep it up!
Yes killing it and making it look sooooo easy! Your going to turn us all into shad fisherman next! Lol Thanks for helping that family out as well, an all around feel good time :)
The benefits the spot lock offers are pretty awesome. Especially with rope anchoring being inherently more dangerous on a kayak. I might have to start thinking of ways to outfit my Sportsman 120 PDL with the Minn Kota.
Wow, what fanatastic action you had. My Mom gave me a National Geographic Society book when I was thirteen for Xmas called the Wondrous World of Fishes. It seems that back in1965 American Shad was a very popular food fish on the East Coast. There is a short article about how to properly fillet a shad. It appears that they zipper the fillet similar to zippering walleyes to remove most of the bone. I can photo the article and send it to you if you like. I love pickled Herring. I wonder what shad taste like pickled. After all, they are a herring.
I've never had shad picked but I like pickled herring. No one has tried to develop a commercial fishery on the Columbia for shad so the demand must not be there anymore
I used to live out there and you could not pay me enough to eat a fish out of the Willamette or Columbia rivers. They have insane amounts of agro chem runoff going into them, especially the Willamette.
We caught 90 Shad in the same spot in one day about 3 years ago…4ft leader and 4ft dropper..green grub….take a can of tuna open it up and soak your grubs in it…
Another helpful hint. See if you can find a transparent pink grub. We often change colors when bite is off.. plus if they aren't biting change your dropper lengh.
They taste good but pretty damn honey for sure. I did try frying the skeins and believe not or not dang tasty. Also canned a few and Its decent but smells like cat food when you open the jar. Enjoy and tight lines!
Thanks man. I was interested in anchoring up on some of those lanes and wondering if it was kayak appropriate. I can see it now! Consider anchor fishing for “anything else” in that spot?? Wink wink.
IMHO....the only thing good about Shad is they are fun to catch and you can turn them into crab!!! 👍👍👍 Good Karma to you for helping the family with some crab bait!!! 👍👍
Great video! I love all the details you share. I am embarrassed to admit I have never tried shad fishing. Every year I think about it but I just never get around to trying it. How long does your battery last when holding position like that? You said current was around 1.x mph. How long could you stay out there (or how many miles can you do on a full charge)? How well does that kayak pedal (if you stay too long)?
Thanks for all the info, You share. I barely bought my first kayak. I'm thinking to invest on a fish finder. Do you have any? Suggestions on what brand is the best option. Thanks
@@spiltmilt yeah we seem to have inconsistent bites in Oregon City at times, but we’re not sure whether it’s a tide thing effecting the current, or just shifting travel lanes. Also, what do you make of the shad numbers being so low going over Bonneville still?
Yeah the Willie seems to have a dip in current mid-day that coincides with a slow bite. I think they are just late on the Columbia. Fishing below Bonneville is insane right now
@@spiltmilt so you are pretty close to the bottom when trolling? I'm here on the American trying to troll from a bridge using your same method. Some kids here catching on just the grub jig with a split shot on like 4lb line. I haven't got eem yet lol

Shad, like ducks, is all about being on the X. You certainly were that day!

The boat next to me that had almost no fish was using divers.

Heading out tomorrow to try for Shad out of the Hobie for the first time. I had to watch this to get pumped up!
You lived up to your production company name in this one!
You’re amazing Tyler. I’ve learned so much from you. Best fishing channel on TH-cam!
So awesome you’re killing it, while tossing the fish back in! I love it, can’t wait to get my Autopilot 136 on the water again!

Another Great video..Waiting on the next!
I love your experiments. Thanks for doing them
So much action shad fishing. great vid
The plain grub is a killer in that area, just casting from the bank it kills fish, but the dodger looks like a fun way to fish too!

Epic video! We fished today there and did good also! Your videos are killer man
“I am killing it!” As he mic drops....sorry, fish drops 😆
Alright. This is so rad.
No anchor on my kayak. Was just trying to figure out how I’d plan this today
Awesome. Thanks for sharing

I get such a kick out of watching your videos! I don’t have the anchor lock system on my Hobie. Would it work trolling? I suspect so but curious.
You can definitely troll.

Are Shad good table fare? We have a good Shad fishery here in CA, but I’ve never fished for them.
Some people like to can or smoke them. I never did develop a taste for them.
A gentle lift/flutter-back action seems to out-fish just letting it sit in the rod holder, for me.
I am killing it **drops shad**

I was drawing about 6 amps per hour to spot lock there. I have a 100 Ah battery so would have 15-18 hours of battery at that draw
@@spiltmilt Wow! That is way better than I had been anticipating. I assumed you were pulling more current than that. Once again great video!
Thanks for all the info, You share.

Suggestions on what brand is the best option. Thanks
Humminbird Helix or Garmin Striker are the best options
Great video! What time of year was this? Thinking about going out Sunday, but it might be too early? Thanks!
Late May. Might be a bit early with the high cold water this year
@@spiltmilt Thanks! Going to give the boat a shake down run Sunday and will give it a go to see what happens.
Very cool Tyler. Do you think the tide effects the shad bite at all?
It certainly does on the lower Columbia and Multnomah Channel. Less so in the Oregon City area of the Willamette where I was at
@@spiltmilt yeah we seem to have inconsistent bites in Oregon City at times, but we’re not sure whether it’s a tide thing effecting the current, or just shifting travel lanes. Also, what do you make of the shad numbers being so low going over Bonneville still?

I can see after watching you switch sides with the rods why you use 1 left hand and 1 right hand retrieve.
I hear they are great crab bait.
The best crab bait.
They have a lot of fish oil in them, that is why they are so great.
😹😹I AM KILLING IT😹😹
What's a dropper
A dropper is a weight tied off of a piece of monofilament weaker than your mainline. Its typically tied on a three way swivel or sliding weight rig.

@@spiltmilt you never get a tangled with the weight line and the dodger?
This is anchor fishing so you don't cast it. So no tangles
Nice job....👍
I thought that you could only Legally fish one rod in the river In Oregon.
U thought wrong.
@@spiltmilt just for shade
So jealous,I want to give you thumbs down, great video👍🏾👎🏾🤣.
