It's such a pity that he fucked up one of Hawkwind's greatest tracks with his stifling ego. Drum solos have no p[lace in any Hawkwind song. This abortion was rightly greeted with boos and howls of indignation at every concert on the tour. People actually walked out, me amongst them [though most of us returned] when he did this. The man had no sense of what Hawkwind were/are about and he couldn't even come up with an original solo just re-hashed his Cream thrash. He was of course soon ousted but he had the gall to tour Italy as a Hawkwind outshoot. Twat.
I wish ginger would have stayed for another couple of albums with hawkwind....easily their best drummer....but ginger is known for kicking off with everybody....
@Spaceshiptechnician ginger had more feeling than all other hawkwind drummers put together...nobody puts the fills in the levitation material that ginger did.... name another hawkwind drummer who's half as good as ginger....and we'll have a laugh.... the only other hawkwind drummer who wasn't a 'basic' timekeeper.... is richard chadwick....
@@volpeverde6441 Well let's start with Terry Ollis - not my favourite Hawk drummer but had more feeling for the music as he was a founder member, then Simon King - not technically gifted but he was the drummer who provided the base, along with Lemmy, upon which Brock and Turner built the sound. Then there was the amazing Martin Griffin in the late 70s and early 80s. So baker put in some fills on Levitation. And? Have you heard Simon King's drum part for the Levitation album? Those of us who have would opt for King every day. As for 'tribal rhythms' well Richard Chadwick has that down pat as any Hawk fan knows.
@Spaceshiptechnician I've seen hawkwind with baker/griffin/powell/deamer/thompson/chadwick....my two favourites are BAKER and CHADWICK.....also simon king fitted the band very well....
From Keith Jones Christian session drummer Cornwall. Sorry to hear about Ginger, a top musician and drummer. A bass player friend of mine, Harvey Bainbridge, worked with him many years ago now, he will be missed from the drumming world. God Bless, no more tears and no more pain - that's the way God planned it. Psalm 23 (K.J.)
from "Saga of Hawkwind" - Ginger having trouble with Hawkwind bassist Harvey: "Jack Bruce was the only other bass player to argue with me like this and he was a GIANT!" Ginger then gets sacked for arguing for Jack Bruce to replace Hawkwind's Harvey. Then Ginger puts out to the press: “The worst bass player in the world sacks the best drummer in the world!"
Ginger was already taking more money than the rest of the band, as a drummer he was brilliant with Hawkwind but as a team player...... I'd rather have Harvey on my team. I mean who wants a seven minute drum solo with a belly full of mushrooms anyway?
@@shellovski Uh Cream fans? Their gigs in the 60s had a ton of acidheads and shrooms lovers. I both love Hawkwind and Cream which I listened to both on psychedelics. Both provide different vibes to your trip. ;) But I do agree that Ginger Baker wasn't the best drummer for Hawkwind. The same with Bill Bruford with Gong.
When you listen to bonham bushy Mitchell moon etc you can hear Ginger in the way they are playing .They couldn’t be as the rolling thunder Baker but they at least tried and did pretty good!
Remember this drum solo from Lewisham in 1980 the pain still lingers . Think i can remember Dave trying to shut him up and stop him. Otherwise a great tour
I Was at the Wolverhampton gig,,, and I thought wow, lets have Ginger Baker doing his solo,,, after all, its amazing that hes in this band in the first place,,, The funny thing is,,,, that Ginger laughed about getting the sack later,, Ginger said The worlds worst Bass Player has just sacked the worlds best drummer,,, hes got it spot on there......
Ginger was far to good for Hawkwind, epecially this rabble sound, the album is good though with him, sacking Ginger lol Brock got rid of everybody who stood in his way
I saw Hawkwind twice on the Levitation tour and had to endure Baker's solo twice, SO boring. It was funny when bass player Harvey Bainbridge walked onstage in the middle of the solo and started playing along, you could see that Bkaer was p**sed off, no wonder he tried to sack Bainbridge lol !!
Well Jack Bruce back in the days of "Graham Bond Organization" did the same thing during his drum solo when he played bass during that time. It must have gave in a reminder of those terrible days when Harvey did the same. Ginger's drum solo would not have been boring if this was Cream perfoming since they were known for being incredible musicians and expert in improvisation and extensions of their music. But this is Hawkwind, yes their music was pretty much long yes but had plenty of psychedelic and space rock freak outs as oppose to "long individual solos".
+Nick Cox Bringing Jack in would have been too much for Hawkwind to handle. Especially since Ginger and him were one of the best rhythm sections of all time and Hawkwind aren't exactly what I call "extremely technical musicians". It would be so hilarious seeing Lemmy on bass with Ginger, both with super bad tempers and funny as hell seeing them arguing. XD
+Lenin Luna not disputing how good Bruce and Baker are, they tighter than a nuns....well u know what. At time where Ginger was struggling to find work I find it strange he's trying to dictate band members, Watch the documentary beware Mr Baker it's awesome. Lemmy would, he us God lol
I feel this encore was fucked from the start. Dave & Huw are really not on it when they drop Brainstorm, to the point that the chord sequence is just plain wrong. The drum solo is far too long whilst at the same time really good (technically) however from the audiences point of view, somewhat boring?
Honestly dont think you could ever have a Ginger Baker solo that was too long - if you were in the audience you would understand i think. I saw Ginger do a set at Glastonbury in 1981 it was amazing and def not boring! I think it was Ginger Bakers Nuts - to be honest i only remember him being on stage and i didnt want it to end - i was 22 and the beat entered your body and became part of you - i wasnt even stoned. Turn it up as loud as you can and listen again! Amazing!
Problem was - Ginger Baker was (is) a superb musician and whatever you might think about Hawkwind, virtuosity just wasn't their strong point. It was a bad mismatch - like sticking a classical musician in the sex pistols or something. I saw this line up live, too - and the 'true' Hawkwind fans hated Baker, whilst at least 30% of the audience were, like me, only there because Baker was on drums. When I saw them he was so drunk on Bacardi and Stoned on marajuana he literally couldn't walk. He had to be carried onstage by two roadies. I thought "oh no, he's blown it, he's going to be crap". He wasn't, he was fantastic - and a lot of the anger from the Hawkwind fans I'm sure was because, even out of his box, he was clearly musically way beyond anyone else's league on the stage - and it showed.
Baker was an incredibly nasty man and total egomaniac. For him to put this appallingly boring solo in the middle of one of Hawkwind's iconic tracks was staggering. He had no understanding of Hawkwind's past although Dave Brock was an established musician contemporary to early Cream, he had no idea about hardcore Hawkwind fans and was contemptuous of Hawkwind's music. During the tour many fans walked out or booed for the entire drum solo. When he left the cheers of joy and sighs of relief were deafening. Good riddance to bad rubbish
Approx 7 mins of drum blistering from Mr. Baker RIP passed this day 2019 ... but his music and spirit lives on .. forever !
Saw him at Cream farewell appearance at Madison Square Garden in '69. 20 minute drum solo! (or at least it felt like it. ;) )

Go Ginger!! Nobody did Tribal Rhythms like him...
much underated band featuring the worlds greatest drummer. Nice tune.
Only people who understand true tribal rythmn and it's effects on the earth would understand ... all others are still sleeping
dancers in althzimers remeber swan lake through practise and muscle memory and self dedication to perform
Saw Hawkwind early 70's so missed Ginger but saw Lemmy and Stacia!
Love Ginger!
RIP Ginger
I wish ginger would have stayed for another couple of albums with hawkwind....easily their best drummer....but ginger is known for kicking off with everybody....
The worst drummer Hawkwind ever had by a long streak. He had no feeling for their music at all.

Brutal. LOL. I can image Brock seething backstage and screaming "Can someone get that Twat off the kit?" LOL
Yeah, now everyone else is screaming the same thing about you and the keyboard.

Historical but bizarre. I detect a certain aggression from the audience!!
oh my god it is still going on............ I agree with God Kill

Good drum solo (if you like drum solos) but would have been tempted to do some random synth noises over the top...
Ginger attacked Jack Bruce more than once for playing during his drum solo....
random synth noises....?
ginger would probably bite a chunk out of your throat...
Had Del or DikMik still been in the band at that time they certainly WOULD have drowned out this travesty with audio generator and synth sounds.
I think the last sound was poor old Ginger disappearing up his own behind!

Poor ginger joined a little too late. His drumming would have brought a great dynamic to the band in the late seventies.
It would have caused their demise in very short order. Thank christ the others kicked the arse out.
Why didnt Ginger stay with Hawkwind ?
Because he was sacked for being an arsehole who didn't understand their music, attitudes or spirit as this solo proves so vividly.
Ginger was far to good for Hawkwind, epecially this rabble sound, the album is good though with him, sacking Ginger lol Brock got rid of everybody who stood in his way
Too high the level of ginger baker in confrontation to the hawking ensemble

you are a grade A prick. you know nothing about music
crummy days! i can see why the audiance got fed up with that, very good and all, but 2/3rds of the encore were taken up by the bollocks drum solo!
Not sure if true but heard Ginger Baker wanted to sack Harvey Bainbridge n bring in Jack Bruce!!!! Dave Brock wasn't having it n Ginger left.
summat like that....
