I gotta admit when I first started watching this show I actually felt bad for the way Sheldon always laid into Howard and his profession. But then I came to realise what an absolute jerk Howard was and saw how he actually deserved it. Difference is, Howard knew what a jerk he was but Sheldon didn't realise when he was being a jerk.. Makes Howard the bigger jerk.
Sheldon is kinda tragic when you realize that his inability to understand people and his natural 5 year old mentality make him suffer so much when his morals and the way he cares about others just doesn't match.
You can tell Howard remembered the slideshow incident the moment Bernie was saying the C3P-Wee Herman was 10 years ago. The look on his face shows he's regretting something.

Sheldon reluctantly respects and hates the engineering PhD professor who humbled abd challenged him without giving special treatment for being a gifted genius. At the end Sheldon is grateful to that professor for challenging him and pushing him out his comfort zone. Howard ask why does he not respect him for being an engineer. Sheldon response he just doesn’t like his character. To further explain. Sheldon doesn’t like the kind of crude humor Howard uses. When Howard makes fun of Sheldon. Sheldon is no good at insults . Sheldon. uses the most obvious ones like Howard’s lack of a PhD how he settled for a masters. While everyone else except Penny has a PhD. It’s a follow up in this particular episode. Everyone can easily take a shot at Sheldon character. Sheldon sucks at insulting back he uses the most obvious ones.

Howard reaches the absolute pinnacle of their field and accomplishes something they all dreamed of as children, and until the end of the series Sheldon can't process not being the most accomplished so tries to degrade and demean Howard instead to make himself feel better.

While Howard made that space toilet which doesn't work, crashes Mars Rover and hadn't done anything significant till his space travel Whether you like Sheldon or not, he did solid research in his field since the beginning. It's just that it was in String Theory which was a dead end because you couldn't confirm his work experimentally. But in real life, this dynamic doesn't make sense. No one mocks an engineer for a lack of PhD. And they make more money than us 😂. And Princeton, from what I've heard is still a great school. There is an MIT-Caltech rivalry in real life though so there's that. I think the writers of the show wanted to show this really childish dynamics where everyone is mocking and belittling everyone else.
