I just sold my first journey, a 2009, that still ran great and gave us no issues at 300k. It became our kids car when I purchased my second one, a 2014, which I’m still driving at almost 200k with no major issues to date. I’m sad to see them go and will be on the lookout for a similar vehicle (possibly a Grand Cherokee L or Wagoneer)

I bought my 2012 dodge journey new and have 194,000 on it. Same engine, tranny, no electrical problems. I have replaced some stuff and always maintained it with a master mechanic. I know these don't have good reputations and it is not a high end car by any means, but it has been a good road car and reliable. First Dodge I ever had. Every manufacture has their rough cars, especially if it isn't their high end models. Most people don't get problems fixed right away and they don't have someone they can trust.

I have a 2012 SXT 4 cylinder, 2.4 L, front wheel drive with 156k on it. I've driven from Texas to Guatamala and back twice and it's been our daily shared short journey car inbetween hammering over the Sierra Madres . As a family we really hammer this car with dog in the back, camping gear on the roof and sometimes bikes on a rack at rear. I've had to change the thermostat and the waterpump. The rear lights went out so I had to fix the wiring with electrical tape and just a week ago a rear side window stopped opening so I'll have to fix that. It started using oil about 30k ago and so between oil changes I have to top it up with a pint or two.. I change the oil every 5k +/- and have done the transmission services on time. I think I change the anti freeze every 2 years. My wife chose the car for the leather seats and sunroof thing, I'd never owned a Dodge before always Ford, Nissan or Toyota. This has been the toughest and most reliable car I have ever owned. I guess I got lucky! I don't want to talk about the Sonic we bought...

I even tow my 18' roundabout boat with it.

2009 Dodge Journey AWD, 180k, 3rd owner, put more than the last 100k on it. I've had none of these issues. Replaced rear shocks and struts, even though we don't have a tow hitch, and rarely have used the 2 rear passenger seats. Smooth runner, fabulous in snow with the AWD, large wheels, and excellent ground clearance. I upgraded the rotors and brake pads when doing routine brake maintenance. Can achieve as high as 33 mpg on long highway trips, or as low as 18 in city winter driving, but average 22. The engine consumes a 1/4 quart of oil every two fillups, which is to be expected in this engine at this mileage. I have a code reader, and the fuel trim still reads great. No codes get kicked out. Stout, dependable, family workhorse.

Thanks for the video. I bought a 2012 Fiat Freemont which is essentially the same as the Dodge Journey but with the smaller 2.4 litre Gema engine. I started up a Facebook page and found the following main issues that kept appearing on the page. 1. The wiring loom on the rear hatch. The wires eventually fatigue and snap, causing issues with various rear hatch functions such as camera, rego plate lamp, hatch lock button, wiper, reverse light, brake lights. 2. The bluetooth module. Randomly fails and is very expensive to replace out of warranty. 3. The heater vents not functioning properly. 4. The throttle body. Its made of crappy plastic so the internal cog eventually strips and fails.

The Journey seems so hit or miss. I own a 2012 with 160k on it. Heater core and radiator had to be replaced. The 3.6 in mine had to have the cylinder head replaced which was quite common for the pentastar v6. Mine doesn't owe me a thing, it always starts and always gets me home. Every feature still works at 11 years old! The 62te transmission hasn't been touched and has been troublefree. I'd gladly buy another one.

Bought a 2013 Journey SXT from a dealership 2 years ago for $9000. Had 170,000kms on it & I've had to put $5000 worth of work into it. New transmission & passenger side half shaft @ 200,000kms, new blend doors @ 215,000kms, & all the routine maintenance (oil changes, air filters, etc). Heater isn't working correctly now so I'm going to flush the core & change the coolant. If that doesn't work & I need a new heater core ($2000 job), I'm scrapping the car. We had fantastic luck with Dodges in the past (1992, 96, & 2010 Grand Caravans), but I'll never buy another Journey

They're not that bad if you take care of it and do preventative mantinence, but some things are stupidly designed and hard to replace. Ex. Take off left wheel to get to battery, right wheel for alternator, rear struts you must take off all panels nearly, etc.

With my 09 Dodge Journey, I've found the location of the battery lends to battery failure in cold weather. My battery gets cold during nights and non driving times and drags the battery down as it's located down behind the drivers front tire, removal of the battery requires removing the drivers front tire, fender skirt and then turning the wheel all the way to the right to access the battery. Also splashing through puddles can split your battery down the side as mine did a couple of years ago and led to battery acid going everywhere!

    • @stevenleighton1947
      @stevenleighton1947 3 ปีที่แล้ว

I've never had to take the wheel off my 2012, 4 cylinder to change the battery. I've driven off road on rocky trails a lot and forded streams without problem. Maybe you are missing the plastic underbody protection that fixes to the front bumper? I's a big piece of moulded plastic that I've broken twice but it protects the battery as well as under the engine and transmission. Good luck!

Oil pump high pressure silenoid failed and I had to replace oil pump. I change oil every 5000 miles with synthetic oil. I tig welded in my own transmission pan drain plug and change the trans fluid every year, first trans filter change was at 50000, second at a 100,000. I have changed the coolant now 3 times and the thermost once. I lost rear heat a few years ago and had to back flush rear heater core. Now have 150,000 miles and I bought it with 200 miles on it. I bought a used 2017 SE, cheap version,, in late summer in 2017 from a Dodge dealership. with 3,100 miles, yes 3100 miles, they had over 10 of these cars and probably used it for service rentals. I paid a total of $15,321 out the door, they wanted to charge me $15,900, I walked out the door got in my car and was driving down the street when the manger call me back and agreed upon my original price. I laughed when the salesman told me the were big sellers, yeah right you got 10 sitting on the lot. I have over 38,000 miles with no problems so far, I plan to replace the battery during the summer as it is a hassel to replace and I don't want to have problems when least expected. I use synthetic motor oil, changed the spark plugs at 30,000, and air filters every 20 000. To me, some of Dodge's recommended service intervals are spaced out way too long.

Well......some of the Journeys manufactured in 2012 and from 2013 onwards have some Fiat components that are not as reliable as the Dodge components. You have to check your oil because very high oil consumption is the norm. Infact there is a class action lawsuit in process right now against Dodge for this very problem. You can Google that.

Should of also said if fob battery dead or missing hold fob to start button and journey will start and drive. If journey is dead and you want to put in neutral to roll, inside of box between seats is a little opening to put screwdriver to allow stifter to move. The wiring harness inside of rubber boot on rear hatch hinge, wire tend to break due to twisting screwing up all door locks and security.

just reached 400,000 kms on my 2013, none of those problems just normal things like tires battery(which is in a stupid area)and just today the windshield wiper spray nozzles which are made of plastic became brittle and broke due to engine heat, ordered them online took five minutes to replace for 20 bucks, ive had an 1982 dodge omni with 300,000 on it, 85 caravan with 340,000 on it, 1994 caravan over 400,000, 1990 shadow over 320,000 on it,2003 srt4 with 120,000(it was t boned and written off ) 2004 caravan over 400,000 and now the journey, all with absolutely no problems except normal wear and tear, I do miss the size of the minivans though, cant fit in the suv what i fit in the vans :( ( and still have my dads 57 custom royal )

That's actually about right. It's popular to bash Chrysler quality these days. The chances of major problems in any modern cars, whether Toyota or Dodge, in the first 150k miles is tiny. People like you usually don't comment just to praise a certain car when it works as expected, because it's taken as granted. But the rare few who had problems will whine loudly, making it look common when it's actually not, their voices amplified by bandwagon jumpers who think bashing Chrysler quality without ever having owned the model, puts them into the cool crowd.
Although , having owned the model, and changed the battery on it, I wonder what kind of sadist decided to put it down there...

Have a 2016 R/T only hut 75k and there has been a slow drain battery/charging system issue since the 4th day drove off the lot.
Dealer said they never found any problems every time it dies.
Always tell us we 'left something on'
Which is BS because it has run down protection - if you leave anything on, it turns off after about 15 munutes.
I've read a ton of other people have the same issue.
Nothing more aggravating than coming out to start up and getting the first 'key not found' warning, then, nothing but clunks and silence. For no reason.

2009 Journey. Currently at just over 200,000KM, bought from original owner at 85,000KM when about 7 years old. Ran extremely well until the cooling system has crapped the bed. Radiator at 175,000KM (was expecting this, had an 08 Avenger with same 3.5 engine that did the same thing). Coolant bottle cracked at 200,000 km, causing the coolant to leak out. At 205,000km just had the heater tubes disintegrate causing all the coolant to come out while on the highway while my wife was driving who panicked, constant smell now of coolant burning even after repair. Blend door actuator now going, and it flaps like crazy when the engine is warm, shut off and turned back on. Had to pull the fuses for the horn as the TIPM is malfunctioning and making the horn randomly go off, especially after 11pm at about 190,000 KM. Door locks randomly won't work. Got some major rust forming on passenger rear fender. Battery was replaced at about 150,000KM and will never, EVER buy a car where it's in the fender well ever again. Random rear O2 sensor errors over the winter seem to have gone away now that it has warmed up, but this thing has lots of gremlins now. If it's anything like my Avenger that I bought basically as new (30,000KM), after about 250,000 KM I can expect the AC to fail, the EGR to start having problems and injectors to start dying. It's end of life now and if I put any more money outside of scheduled maintenance into it I will be trading it in. It was great till it became so unreliable - the worst thing a car can be is unreliable.

I've got a 2011 Dodge Journey Mainstreet, just turned 101000 thousand miles, the only problem was the right front wheel bearing, and that was an easy fix as long as you use a wheel puller, they come from the factory with no grease fitting points, it's a closed system, I replaced it with one that I can put grease into, simple fix if you know a little about working on cars. I've been doing my own brakes since I was sixteen. Drum brakes, pain in the but!!! one more thing, the rear window wiper works when it feels a mind to...LOL!!!

LOL I replaced throttle body recently for like $500 usd- not too bad. Also I find that my heater works great but my AC isn’t that strong. My key fob works fantastic- my battery is strong- 100100 miles on it-I love my dodge. I prefer to drive a heavier car- this drives like a 4 cylinder...For the price I love it- windshield wipers are kinda weird on mine the fluid is clogged. My 2003 jeep fares better with the “little things” but I appreciate the modernity/space/design/mpg/simplicity of the vehicle! I’m happy and saved a lot of money ...after reading comments it definitely isn’t the most durable vehicle but the truth is some of us aren’t willing to go with a civic and need a cheaper/bigger car. If your check engine light comes on get it sorted right away with this car or you’ll be stuck in the middle of the street! :D

Windshield wipers flash on and off. Gages go up and down. Security light on and off. Dings every time it does it. Ive done all the rest tricks I've found googling the issue. They'd work for awhile. The other day it stopped and then started back up. Again.
Also having the issue with the heat. Passenger side cold driver side warm. Other then that I love it.

I had 2012. It was the worst vehicle I ever owned. Period. I spent more in fixing all the problems than I did making payments. After 2 and half years I traded it. In a one year span, heater core failed, thermostat failed, water pump failed, head gasket failed, and radiator failed. It ran hot all the time no matter what got replaced. And I'm pretty sure towards the end, the transmission was going. First generation and hopefully the last. Anyone who over owned one these should be compensated for pain and suffering.

2014 R/T with 135k and non of these problems was expecting to see other issues. For me it's 1 - front brakes, not sure what is up with them but they never worked well from new. Something where the caliper pieces are not sliding well even when new and lubed IDK but this thing eats rotors, pads wear funny and everything in between. 2 - wheel hubs, replaced every one, and need to do the front again. 3 - rear dif seal passenger side. It gets cooked by the exhaust it will go out. 4 nav system, needed some update after just a few k miles and dodge was like nope we don't do that. 5 - tranny pan leak, I think they just use some sealant from factory, it will fail eventually. All said and done though I like this car and hopefully i can keep it going for many more thousand miles without too much hassle. The engine is great, the awd system is pretty decent, with a decent set of tires the journey feels very balanced and capable in the snow. It's much lighter than other vehicles in it's class and smaller making it much more nimble and quicker for starts and stops. We also have a 19 chevy traverse and it feels like a boat compared to the journey, good bit more space inside though. I'd buy another journey

Buying a 2010 dodge journey. 2 years ago placed a new battery and alternator on it. Just got done replacing tires brakes n such. Oh lets get to fun part. Be a few weeks before i can get it towed to see what is going on. I left state drive 5 hours there and back home no issues. im sitting at stop light after school and getting paperowrk done for a new job. And where speedometer is smoke started to appear oh yeah. So i got off road and no turn signals or head lights. Well after letting vehicle calm down. I still have emergency flashers even thgh you couldnt hear it inside. So i took 3 mile trip home. My son came out got headlights again and we still had break lights rear lights and when energency was on u could see the flashing. Well when we tried regular turn signal or even wiper blades nothing. I also noticed dash board was not dimming up and down since it was vetting dusk by this time. Next day still have inside power at 10 am but click click and wont turn over. 4 pm after i get back home from bus dead as a doornail the vehicle. Hope this be covered by warranty.

I have a 2018 Dodge Journey. Was advised not to get one because my father had one and had nothing but issues with it. Bought it with 5 miles on it 5 years ago. While it’s done the job there have been a couple little hiccups since.
    1) Not an issue, but can be, but annoying to me. Who thought it was a good idea to put the battery in the wheel well of this thing?!? YOU NEED TO BE FIRED!
    2) Electrical issues are INSANE. Radio doesn’t always work, BT doesn’t always sync and for whatever reason my license plate lights go out way more frequently than they should.
    3) The backup camera has managed to already have a distorted view that makes even a blind person have to squint.
    4) The car randomly blew a coolant line. So I replaced it no issues after getting a new one. THEN the thermostat housing cracked somehow and had to replace that.
    5) An issue that just occurred within the last week, one of the pulleys went out.
While they aren’t major issues, for the most part, they are slightly annoying but also expected. Car now has 80k miles on it and is driven in Illinois’ bipolar weather. All in all though, it hasn’t been terrible and has been reliable up until this point.
