    Make sure to also add the popdev:master staging repository, as the version of COSMIC in the release repositories is typically much older than the ones we're working on. It will fix all of the issues you reported here.
    sudo apt-manage add popdev:master
    sudo apt update
    sudo apt dist-upgrade

    Thank you, MH! I believe the COSMIC devs will get it right, but it's going to take some time. They're probably still ~2 months away from an alpha release.

      Yes I think they are planning to release it on 24.10 or something, I made the video because in the presentation they mentioned wanting people to test on gaming

    Great info, I ran into some issues as well on my single nvidia desktop. I'll check it out again in some time, it seems very promising.

    This is really early alpha. I'm not sure if it is even cooked enough to compare their design of the desktop metaphor to other DEs yet.
    I'm sure they will get the technicalities perfect down the line but I'm more excited to see how they approach making a new desktop distinction from Gnome and KDE.
    Hoping for the best of both worlds. The pretty polished intuitive design of Gnome with the pragmatism of KDE.
    Make video of your opinions on their design and approach once it is more cooked.

      Right right, I started working on this video because in the system76 presentation, their CEO mentioned that they wanted people to test gaming on it, I'll try it again once it's fully out

      It's because the video was recorded with an older build of COSMIC. OBS and other issues are resolved in the current development builds.

    I don't get the wayland hype. I did not see what were your impressions, you talked about the bugs, but what does cosmic bring to the table? What makes it different, the UI only?

      Hmm is my title too click baity? Maybe "a quick look" is better than "first impression" to fit my content? I was just checking the status of the alpha version. Sorry for tricking you to click on this.

      Wayland is just better bro, it would take years if we wait for it to be perfect. I'm using Gnome-Wayland on my Laptop with Ryzen 5 4600H and Dual GPU (Integrated and GTX 1650). It feels so much better than X11.

    • @MumblingHugo

    • @VektrumSimulacrum

      It's less about what it brings to the table and more about System76 not having to deal with the Gnome team's BS. They have a reputation for being a PITA to work with. As far as Wayland goes it's newer and more secure than x11 since x11 has been pretty much dead in the water for years at this point.

    The random second display you keep getting is the same issue I had. From my research it is something to do with Nvidia GPU and using their proprietary driver. Using the open source driver you shouldn't get the ghost monitor but also performance will suffer(for now).
    Edit: You can disable them with xrandr on X11.
    xrandr --output Unknown-1 --off
    You should possible be able to do it with ddcutil apparently but I don't know how.

    • @MumblingHugo

      I see, thanks for the suggestions, I don't see the display in x11, I shall give it a try anyways

    To get rid off the second and nonesxistant (unknown) display, I uninstalled and reinstalled the Nvidia drivers.

      @@MumblingHugo yes it did for me, but I can't say for certain it will work for you (but it likely will as it fixed it for me so still give it a shot). Just delete the driver, and restart, then reinstall (instructions on their website somewhere) and then restart. That fixed it for me.

  • @jimjam4real
    @jimjam4real 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Flickering with NVIDIA and Wayland will, within the next few months or so, very likely cease to be a problem. NVIDIA's 555 proprietary drivers have finally exposed a new API, allowing for explicit sync directly with the hardware, and when implemented into the desktops as it is with Xwayland currently, should help to remove the vast majority of visual bugs experienced without it. It's already merged into KDE and Gnome, and are idle in the code until their next releases.

    • @MumblingHugo
      @MumblingHugo  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Oh that's good to know, the flicker issue is the only thing that stopped me from using Wayland now

      @@MumblingHugo wlroots is going to take a while as we only recently had the major release of 0.17, and is targeting 0.18, so Sway and anything else using it will take some time, but the major desktops and Hyprland both seem to be implementing it relatively quickly :)
