Hi guys, my name is Hugo, I am just an average guy who loves using Linux. I am not claiming to be the most knowledgeable Linux user in the world, I just want to share my stories with Linux (and some times other related topics like open source and self-hosting ). I hope my findings, failures, success and learnings can inspire/encourage more and more people to start trying out Linux.
hyprland on nVidia: wayland window manager for gamers
Spoiler alert: Hyprland shows promise with minimal flickering and impressive gaming performance, challenging the traditional X11 environments. But does it outshine the stability and compatibility of X11 for hardcore gamers? Join me as we uncover the answers in this in-depth exploration.

All regular user/gamer day-to-day software can be installed from their app store. Didn't find llvm, git, qemu, neovim though
I can't wait for the new video about the state of Nvidia + Hyprland + NixOS, especially in terms of daily usage and your workflow!
I've been using this exact setup for around 8 months now, and I can confidently say that it's kinda bad. For context: - GTX 1070 - i5 9400F - 16 GB of DDR4 - Using NixOS unstable branch (rolling-release branch) in my flake (have tried running stable as well) - Proprietary Nvidia drivers (tried both the latest release and the stable release) Here are some issues I've encountered: 1. Shit breaks, and it breaks all the time. Well, sometimes it doesn't work in the first place. Every update is a gamble. Will it break? What will be the issue this time? Is it a NixOS issue? A Hyprland issue? A Wayland issue? An Nvidia issue? Some combination of the above? The worst part is that you're just left there waiting until the next commit which, hopefully, will fix your issue, which is different every time. Sure, you could roll back to the stable commit if you're using overlays, but it doesn't always work and it's a pain the in the ass. 2. The gaming performance is atrocious. Awful input delay and constant flickering issues. 3. Random miscellaneous issues, e.g. flickering, stuttering, input delay, crashes, etc. I installed XFCE alongside Hyprland a few weeks ago for gaming purposes, but over the last few days I've been using XFCE exclusively, and I've had no issues doing anything. NONE. You could give Hyprland a try, sure. But I have, and I'm a bit underwhelmed to say the least.
@@minecraftpufferfish9066 So the main problem was basically how GTX 1070 worked on Hyprland(Wayland)?
@@sher1x165 that main problem was basically that I constantly experienced problems and didn't know what exactly caused them. I am currenly using this exact setup, but I have tweaked some environment variables and everything seems to work decently, but not as well as KDE on Wayland.
@@minecraftpufferfish9066 so now you're using Hyprland again?

Hi I saw in one of your videos benchmarking Assassin's Creed Origins in CachyOS. Could you please share how you were able to play this game and make ubisoft connect work in CachyOS?
The reason we use it is if something breaks we can actually do something for it. And thats learning works!
Thank you very much! So useful for me!
why there isn't NixOS on a benchmark list? 🫠
KDE Plasma cannot support dual-monitor workstations. It forgets the settings for the secondary desktop with every reboot.
This video is VERY useful! Knowing the problems someone can have after installing the OS and how to fix them with little effort is always better than trying out for yourself when you don't have much experience to begin with (in my case, with Linux in general).
The answer to video title - yes, objectively. As someone who prefers VSync, it caused me a lot of trouble on windows. Because for some reason whenever there's an artificial limit to framerate such as VSync, the GPU's frequency stays low. Seemingly because AMD driver on windows tries to "guess" whenever you're gaming or not. So when it sees low GPU utilization (such as with a framerate limiter) it doesn't let card accelerate which brought me stutter on windows. Uncapping FPS in the game fixes this issue. But it's just nonsense in my opinion. Linux has no issues with VSync and utilizes GPU properly.
Thanks for making this video bro😊
This channel has the linux gaming facts I crave.
I can't believe Wayland is finally fixed, i'm using it right now, Steam and everything are perfect, better than X11 in some ways. I never thought I would see the day
Haha, me too
@@MumblingHugo hey buddy , i was going to sleep but search about this and found your video. I will surely see this in morning But can you help me i am trying to run hyprland on nvidia but its using intel integrated card and even i can share screen in google meet Too much problem tried every possible solution Please help me out brother I am using ARCH
Also, I don't like Calamares installer. The original openSUSE installer that few noobs complain about haves its logic as Yast itself is. Once you learn from the source, you never regret it.
Question is: do you want the impossible with a standardized and main stream like Windows or do you want to gradually tinkering, step by step and starting from (in this case) openSUSE Tumbleweed? The best choice never comes for newbies. Even the sequences on what do you need to install first is crucial. That's why I will always discourage people to chose these distro instead of the main independent ones. Wanna have the chameleon side? Go pure, go openSUSE. Wanna stay Debian? Go Debian 12 and above even if also Mint is a smart solution and more time saver, there is no shame in that. And so on. Tendentiously having the fully independent distro is something that build in your mind the IT education. The order and logic for any configuration system. Reading, learning and giving yourself the right time for your personal learning curve is a must. Linux isn't for newbies that "never have time to learn".
Missing the best CachyOS
I put it in another video, have you seen th-cam.com/video/d5fpAOMxrrQ/w-d-xo.html
offtopic but what's the best linux distro for gaming on amd? i tried endeavouros and it had lots of issues for me
Gaming for me on AMD GPU was fine when I had one before, but in general my issue with AMD is that it needs additional tinkering for obs studio, I'd probably go with either nobara or PikaOS, as they both have optimization for AMD GPU
Hey bro please check out Aurora d1x ublue its so good😭 but note rpm ostree is slow, only use if you absolutely need something u can't get through other pkgs ,i use flatpaks and have a container with bazzite and it just works i have the DEV version of Auroroa on Plasma 6🫠 please review bro trust
As system76 devs are around here, here is an idea: i think some people (me included) would like to test the alpha/beta and report some bugs if found, but are more everyday users than pros. Maybe a section on GitHub, or a Video on how to: install and use latest version (as stated in the pinned comment) and how and where to report bugs would be beneficial. On the other hand: maybe thats exactly what you don't want as it could potentially create more overhead than actual benefit? Either way: happy bughunt!
Driver 555 fixes all flickering on wayland, I am running hyprland as daily driver and also have KDEplasma installed for gaming with HDR, I have both installed at least until HDR on hyprland, running on arch btw Edit: I have no issues switching between hyprland and plasma
And what about using gamescope?
I'm using the same setup now on endeavour, no flickering found
@@julioau gamescope right now is broken under 555, it crashes when games detect certain inputs, Nvidia made a comment on one of the forums, I don't remember if it was on nvidia page but it was from one of the official Nvidia accounts quote: 'we broke gamescope with an oversight on the 555 build, but it will be fix for 560 stable', so you either deal with wayland flickering 550 driver or deal with no working gamescope for 555 driver, pick your poison
@@korigun I have an Nvidia GPU that supports 555, but for some reason, Optimus makes everything work all the time, no issues at all and I can verify that it's running things on the Nvidia GPU instead of the Intel one... Though that behaviour makes no sense to me, Optimus should only complicate things further... Anyways, on another note I recently uninstalled the driver and I'm getting 7+ hours of battery life on an i7 7500U and a 42Wh battery, which I find impressive :D
This was an awesome overall loook at hyprlands current state. When it comes to day to day use I dont really notice a difference between hyprland, gnome, and kde.
Great info, I ran into some issues as well on my single nvidia desktop. I'll check it out again in some time, it seems very promising.
Thanks for these tests
It's really interesting. I recently installed Sway on my laptop running OpenSUSE with an Nvidia GPU to see if I'll get a better experience gaming on Wayland. I look like it's a "Yes" compared to my default DE - KDE. But I still experienced glitches while playing games (still an issue on Wayland + Nvidia driver). I hope to see the next driver 555.xx on OpenSUSE soon. If possible, can you do benchmarks on Sway vs. Hyprland vs. another DE on Wayland?
I've been trying 555 on hyprland in endeavor this week, no flickering anymore but some minor issues when switching between hyprland and plasma
@MumblingHugo thank you for your answer. 😃
great video I am thinking of going fully Linux gaming with friends is the only thing that holds me back. Even if there is a 5% loss in performance I will switch
It depends on what games you want to play with your friends, I had no issues playing last epoch recently, Linux was loading new maps faster on my PC compared to theirs on Windows
minecraft java on linux work faster than on windows
i highly suggest make a video about nvidia 555.xx drivers, it solves a lot of issues in Linux desktop enviroments.
I'm thinking the same thing because I already have the setup with Endeavour OS, but I need to see how long it will take me to go through the major fix list, and how to make the comparison visible enough for people to understand. Probably doing it this weekend and see if I can catch the trend.
Really didn't expect gnome to win considering how bloated it is. Maybe window managers excell on ram limited systems...
Me neither, I was surprised when the numbers were out, but I think hyprland will pass x11 gnome very soon
I wonder why hypr is slower than gnome. I would've thought it would be lighter.
I was surprised when the numbers were out, but I think hyprland will pass x11 gnome very soon
GNOME is just the bigger project therefore more optimizations which means more FPS in games since more people try them in GNOME as compared to Hyprland.
Please don't call it an Alpha, because the alpha wasn't released yet! pre-alpha at best
Sure, changed the title
Make sure to also add the popdev:master staging repository, as the version of COSMIC in the release repositories is typically much older than the ones we're working on. It will fix all of the issues you reported here. sudo apt-manage add popdev:master sudo apt update sudo apt dist-upgrade
Thanks, will try it
Pinning this comment, for others as reference
You've done your homework. I'm getting all the exact same issues. Especially freezing while playing videos.
nvidia 555 and cosmic explicit sync soon?
It already did and it fixed all the issues.
I've tried it on arch, not sure what's their plan to pull it in the popos repo
Have you tried Aerospace? They use something similar to i3wm
Sigh, I want to, but our company really doesn't like homebrew on the company machine, it will mess up with the dev settings, resulting in lots of restrictions in picking up applications, I'll setup homebrew in the home dir when having some time. Thanks for the suggestions.
@@MumblingHugo you can also build it locally, that is what I do too
it looked like heroic had the LEAST fiddling of them all
Maybe, but for me lutris is the easiest to migrate all the save files to new distribution
so heroic is better than bottles and lutris?
That would be your call, I'm just presenting how to use each one
To get rid off the second and nonesxistant (unknown) display, I uninstalled and reinstalled the Nvidia drivers.
Did it solve the issue once and for all?
@@MumblingHugo yes it did for me, but I can't say for certain it will work for you (but it likely will as it fixed it for me so still give it a shot). Just delete the driver, and restart, then reinstall (instructions on their website somewhere) and then restart. That fixed it for me.
Nice, thanks for that
I think it would be interesting to try switching her to Linux and making similar video about it :)
I did try but failed, these are the things I've successfully made her stick to, I had videos making my father use Linux, he's been on it for 2 years now, no more windows since then
This is really early alpha. I'm not sure if it is even cooked enough to compare their design of the desktop metaphor to other DEs yet. I'm sure they will get the technicalities perfect down the line but I'm more excited to see how they approach making a new desktop distinction from Gnome and KDE. Hoping for the best of both worlds. The pretty polished intuitive design of Gnome with the pragmatism of KDE. Make video of your opinions on their design and approach once it is more cooked.
Right right, I started working on this video because in the system76 presentation, their CEO mentioned that they wanted people to test gaming on it, I'll try it again once it's fully out
It's because the video was recorded with an older build of COSMIC. OBS and other issues are resolved in the current development builds.
im glad youre back to windows 11
why?
Thank you for going through the trouble to actually test the performance! I assumed when they were talking about performance they meant the desktop was snappier
Agreed, that should be a better interpretation
@@MumblingHugo No, you did a good job, everybody just talks about how fast it is with no proof of that. I may install it anyway because I'm looking for an Arch distro that has an easy install process
The random second display you keep getting is the same issue I had. From my research it is something to do with Nvidia GPU and using their proprietary driver. Using the open source driver you shouldn't get the ghost monitor but also performance will suffer(for now). Edit: You can disable them with xrandr on X11. xrandr --output Unknown-1 --off You should possible be able to do it with ddcutil apparently but I don't know how.
I see, thanks for the suggestions, I don't see the display in x11, I shall give it a try anyways
Flickering with NVIDIA and Wayland will, within the next few months or so, very likely cease to be a problem. NVIDIA's 555 proprietary drivers have finally exposed a new API, allowing for explicit sync directly with the hardware, and when implemented into the desktops as it is with Xwayland currently, should help to remove the vast majority of visual bugs experienced without it. It's already merged into KDE and Gnome, and are idle in the code until their next releases.
Oh that's good to know, the flicker issue is the only thing that stopped me from using Wayland now
@@MumblingHugo wlroots is going to take a while as we only recently had the major release of 0.17, and is targeting 0.18, so Sway and anything else using it will take some time, but the major desktops and Hyprland both seem to be implementing it relatively quickly :)
I don't get the wayland hype. I did not see what were your impressions, you talked about the bugs, but what does cosmic bring to the table? What makes it different, the UI only?
Hmm is my title too click baity? Maybe "a quick look" is better than "first impression" to fit my content? I was just checking the status of the alpha version. Sorry for tricking you to click on this.
@@MumblingHugo They have the same meaning :D Don't worry Hugo, still liked the video, even took a look at what cosmic is :)
Wayland is just better bro, it would take years if we wait for it to be perfect. I'm using Gnome-Wayland on my Laptop with Ryzen 5 4600H and Dual GPU (Integrated and GTX 1650). It feels so much better than X11.
I shall give it a try, thanks for suggesting
It's less about what it brings to the table and more about System76 not having to deal with the Gnome team's BS. They have a reputation for being a PITA to work with. As far as Wayland goes it's newer and more secure than x11 since x11 has been pretty much dead in the water for years at this point.
