THE IMPOSING DOMED STRUCTURE seen at the beginning of this episode is called the "Portal of the Folded Wings", a shrine to aviation. The small scale Space Shuttle is a memorial for those that died both on the Challenger and the Columbia.
The shrine is a 75-foot-tall structure of marble, mosaic, and sculpted figures and is the burial site for fifteen pioneers of aviation. It was dedicated in 1953 by aviation enthusiasts who wanted a final resting place for pilots, mechanics, and other pioneers of flight.
Dedicated to the honored dead of American aviation on the 50th anniversary of powered flight, December 17, 1953, by Lieutenant General Ira C. Eaker USAF (retired). Beneath the memorial tablets in this sacred portal rest the cremated remains of famous flyers who contributed so much to the history and development of aviation.
    THOSE BURIED THERE:
Bertrand Blanchard Acosta (1895-1954), co-pilot with Admiral Richard Byrd in 1927
Jimmie Angel (1899-1956), discoverer of Angel Falls - his ashes were later removed and scattered over the falls.
Walter Richard Brookins (1889-1953), flew for the Wright brothers
Mark Mitchell Campbell (1897-1963), stunt pilot and aircraft designer
John Franklin Bruce Carruthers (1889-1960), Chaplain of the Portal of the Folded Wings and air historian. His epitaph reads: "At the grave, when my warfare is ended. Though no flowers emblazon the sod. May a prayer mark the good I intended. Leaving all decoration to God."
Warren Samuel Eaton (1891-1966), Colonel and early pilot who built airplanes for Lincoln Beachy
Winfield Bertrum Kinner (1882-1957), a.k.a. Bert Kinner, built "Kinner" airplanes. Amelia Earhart flew a Kinner.
Augustus Roy Knabenshue (1876-1960), balloon and dirigible pilot who flew in the Dominguez Air Meet in 1910 and manager of the Wright brothers exhibition team, the "Wright Fliers."
John Bevins Moisant (1868-1910), won the Statue of Liberty Race in 1910; first to carry a passenger across the English Channel.
Matilde Moisant (1878-1964), the second licensed female pilot in the United States in 1911
Elizabeth Lippincott McQueen (1878-1958), one of Los Angeles's first female pilots
James Floyd Smith (1884-1956), test pilot and instructor for Glenn Martin and manufacturer of parachutes. He built and flew his own plane in 1912 and invented the free-type manually operated parachute for the Army in 1918.
Hilder Florentina Smith (1890-1977), aerial acrobat and parachute jumper. She was married to James Floyd Smith.
Carl Browne Squier (1893-1967), World War I aviator, barnstormer, test pilot, and salesman. As Vice President of Lockheed Aircraft he sold Charles and Anne Lindbergh their Sirius airplane in 1931.
Charles Edward Taylor (1868-1956), machinist for the Wright brothers who helped design and build the first engine for the Wright Flyer flown at Kitty Hawk.

    THIS STORY:
The Blackburn Cult, officially the Divine Order of the Royal Arms of the Great Eleven, or the Great Eleven Club, was a new religious movement started in 1922 by American woman May Otis Blackburn. She started the group on Bunker Hill in Downtown Los Angeles, California, and later formed a retreat in the Southern California Simi Valley.

I was in one but here's how it worked. They used the Bible and taught from it but behind the scenes, they were abusing the finances. One of the ministers confronted them and they put him out so he posted a letter on the internet. I read it and decided to leave. I wasn't going to bring people to church to be cheated.

This is a truly gruesome story but thank you for sharing it. The depths human nature can sink to in the name of religion or in the pursuit of financial gain is beyond belief. Poor Willa I hope she is resting in peace in heaven as for the others involved in her death I’m sure they are keeping themselves warm in the other place. You have a wonderful way of narrating these stories and very respectful , thank you again.

Fascinating story indeed! All this took place within the Jazz Age of the Roaring 20's. She and her daughter are dressed in the jaunty flapper styles, even her mother looked stylish as an old lady. I'm sure she was a frump, though, when the she died in 1951 and looks even worse today. To be such a featureless place, that aviation monument is gorgeous as are all things built in the 1920's!

I think the domed structure in the cemetery is the building the light twin Dale Black was a passenger in, struck in 1969. He was 19. The two flying pilots died. Dale had an incredible NDE he reviled in his book “Flight to Heaven”. He was interviewed and tells the story of this in TH-cam videos.

The cemetery has an entrance called the Portal of the Folded Wings Shrine to Aviation that is the final resting place for aviation pioneers-barnstormers, daredevils and sundry architects of aviation. The shuttle is a model of the famous space shuttle the Challenger. Someone may have already provided this info but thought I would pass it along just in case.

Thanks for the tour. Sadly people will believe what they want to and for that I feel sorry for them. That evil woman will get her punishment at some stage. Keep up the interesting tours.

It's sad that people fall for these types of cults. I can't imagine believing in this so much that I would agree to be boiled alive. Seems like these cults always end badly and always promise eternity and riches. You would think people would not follow these crazy crooks. Interesting how the mother, father and the so called Rev died 10 years apart. 31, 41, 51. To the average person walking in the cemetery you would never know she was evil since she does have that Rev listed.

cults have been around, and they seem to repeat the same "sale" mantra. they will be here, as long as there are sheep to follow. so it goes on, more stories to baffle the mind to come, I am sure!

I find your social history very interesting Ron . Have you ever been to to the U.K my favourite cementery has to be Highgate in London it has amazing Tombs and many famous people including poets...

    • @FacesoftheForgotten

Yes I will include Highgate -everybody suggests that -I’ve seen it online, although I probably won’t spend a lot of time there, it’s a tourist destination, but we will cover it.
I have lots of other interesting places I think to see there. Not that highgate isnt interesting, just stuff off the beaten path is what I like!!

I live on the Space Coast, right up next to Cape Canaveral... and we don't even have a baby shuttle in a cemetery. That's so oddly random.

  • @Bulbachar

Space shuttle has the names Columbia and Challenger on them. As most will remember, both were destroyed. Wonder if anyone is buried there from either one?

According to Find A Grave, there are no disaster victims there, it's only a memorial.

    • @Bulbachar
      @Bulbachar 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@yvellebradley2502 There would be a burned body left. Look up Cosmonaut, Vladimir Komarov. He knew he was probably going to die and requested an open casket. Be warned, photo might be disturbing. Story behind it is sad.
