This THAILAND ADVENTURE Nearly Finished Me!

  • I’ve seen a lot of Thailand and this is one of its best hikes. Phu Langka National Park in Bueng Kan and Nakhon Phanom Provinces in North East Thailand, has become a green tourism hub recently with the opening of two hikes associated by locals with some ancient legends.
    The standard hikes are challenging enough but not many know that there is another, longer route from the National Park Headquarters that takes you across a lonely and vast plateau to the more visited side of the mountain.
    I take this longer route and find it much more challenging than on my previous visits.
    Here's a playlist of my popular videos about Thailand in the 80's and 90's

    Amazing hike! Can’t imagine you doing it by yourself if you got injured. I know you have the gps but always better to hike with a buddy. Take care Karl - you’re one of my favorites. This hike sets you apart from all others. Especially at your age. Ha!

    I have much respect for traversing this terrain solo Karl. Kahtoola microspikes would have been the ticket for that terrain. Light, packable, easy on and off, especially without a walking stick to tripod your bodyweight. Outstanding effort and resiliency to adversity. I wish I was there with you. I am still stuck here in the states but training six days a week to be ready.

    • @karlsthailand
      @karlsthailand  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes, sometimes recording everything means that you can’t navigate the terrain as efficiently as you might have otherwise. I’ve never used micro-spikes but like the sound of them. In all honesty Thailand isn’t the best place to buy kit once it becomes specialised. Happy New Year

    i'm just correlating your happiness to see people again with the terrain you encountered. when areas were overgrown and marked paths were not clear, i was concluding they are not frequented often. so, there was a very good reason for your reaction. In being up for this adventure, you had just gone where few have dared to explore.

    • @karlsthailand
      @karlsthailand  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The thing was that I had hiked this trail twice before, once alone and then later with two others. What made this instance different was the fact that because of the time of year there were areas where the terrain was very slippery and in places overgrown which made it harder to follow (I had to rely on my gps in places)d. Also I was carrying more weight in the form of video equipment and especially water. Last but not least there was absolutely nobody around until I got to the side of the mountain where the tourist destinations are (my next video), I'd also had to do a detour of probably 2km right at the start. It certainly did feel good to see other people. Cheers

    That almost finished me when we did it last time mate........ in the dry season. The conditions here look a tad challenging old chap, and even more of a challenge doing it solo!! Slip sliding away. I bet you enjoyed the first beer after that one.

    • @karlsthailand
      @karlsthailand  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It was definitely tougher and there were times when I thought back to that time we went there with John. The trail was a lot more overgrown, I was so happy to have the gps with the trail loaded and of course the wet, slippery rock. I remember commenting when we hiked it together that it would be a nightmare if wet and I never realised how right I was. Happy New Year

      They look very nice but I have no idea of their availability in Thailand, it can be pretty limited here. Also I'm on the fence about goretex and similar footware here. They're fine until the top over and get wet and then they take forever to dry. I definitely prefer lighter footwear to boots and the hiking shoes I currently wear do have a waterproof membrane...whic is kinf of pointless as anything over 4 inches of water and they top out lol. Also NOTHING was going to grip on some of that wet rock, it was crazy, worse than ice.

      It was the only option apart from turning around which had it own obstacles lol. It was definitely dodgy though as the wood was very dry and probably quite brittle. Cheers

    That was one treacherous hike Karl. If you don't see _any_ locals at all, be extra precarious 🙂

      For sure Serge. Tbh I think the trail was officially closed. I was turned back when I started the hike and commenced with an easier trail but a kilometre or so in I saw a sign to the summit so I decided to go the the summit as planned by the new trail…which joined onto the trail I originally had planned a couple of kilometres later. I wasn’t in the mood to turn back. Happy New Year

    Be very careful if you are on your own in some of those remote parks, I was in Hat Yai and there was this 7 level waterfall heard reports of foreigners who went to the top and got killed. There are warning signs of strong currents but in Thai, I got to L3 but called it quits because I remember a steep slope up sideways and was slippery, why take the risk? I thought, no one is here to help me and it could be fatal, driver was in carpark clueless and would probably just take off if you didn't return. Your personal safety should be #1 priority.

      Yes, some of those hikes can be pretty dodgy. I had done this one before but without the slippery rock everywhere. Happy New Year!
