  • When it comes to Thai traditions and culture nothing is more mysterious or spectacular than the annual pilgrimage up Khao Khitchakut mountain in Chanthaburi Province. The good news is that this can be added to the list of possible Pattaya excursions, a long day trip that will show you another side to Thailand, a more spiritual and mysterious side than most tourists get to see.
    Between February and April every year, 24 hours a day, for two months a million people hike up the mountain to pay reverence to Buddhist monuments and relics and...well I'm not quite sure what else tbh. The Khao Khitchakut experience has taken on a life and importance of it's own amongst the Thai people over a period of hundreds of years.
    In this video I show you the beauty, the mystery and the fun on this genuine Thai Stairway to heaven!

      Yes, apparently it goes back hundreds of years…I have no idea, I guess discovering that the Naga’s head was discovered in June 2020 left me a bit cynical 😂. It is immensely enjoyable either way and their enthusiasm is a large part of what makes it that way.

    Yes Karl, they certainly don't mind a loudspeaker in Thailand do they? You did well to have that conversation with the three monks over that racket! I hope Danny's wishes came true. Haha Buddha not caring about the accuracy of the coin throwing...I was expecting to see John sitting in that chair with the carrying poles.

    • @karlsthailand

    Enjoyable as ever. Didn’t have a clue where it was so looked it up. Not really familiar with that area.
    Wish the National Parks / Government would act and reinstate corridors between the mountain/parks to help wildlife migrate and thrive in different areas.

    • @karlsthailand
      @karlsthailand  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Well as I'm sure you know they did exactly that with Khao Yai NP and Thap Lan NP but yes, there's a huge amount of forest in that area, mainly protected but no doubt corridors could and should be rerstored. Cheers

    fascinating, that a location with such mass appeal doesn't appear to be any noticeable mishaps. no stumbled step, ending up on the ground with a tear in the knee of trousers. such a popular place in the west surely would have periodic first aid stations with skilled people on standby. maybe with that many monks present, they have contingencies covered.

    • @karlsthailand
      @karlsthailand  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes, I hate it when people are over-protected and they definitely believe that they are protected by the righteousness of their journey. Cheers

    Are these trucks driving on the right-hand side of the road?

    • @karlsthailand
      @karlsthailand  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes Steve, if you watch that section again you’ll see that they use both sides of the road. As a team they have worked out which lines are the safest and help them maintain momentum on the way up. Unfortunately the was a fatal accident this year…driver trying to give his passengers a thrill, but honestly, it’s steeper than is conveyed camera and they need protocols to keep everything moving 24 hours a day for two months.

      Unfortunately someone died this year when one of the pickup trucks turned over just a couple of days before we went up. As for the hiking section…I have no idea. It’s not that tough and there are plenty of people around at least. Cheers
