    Yes, mistake with the gravy, I must have grabbed an old packet. I normally use "Simply Organic" Vegetarian Brown Gravy

    I think I’d be far more inclined to add a spice mixture rather than any kind of fake gravy. There are wonderful products at a lot of Asian or Indian markets. Enjoying the videos!

    I just found your channel and it’s been a great guide since I’m plant based (aside from honey) and have always tried to eat healthy on trail. I actually make something almost identical with tvp beef chunks and vegan gravy instead. Never thought to add cranberries or beets though! I like adding dehydrated green beans to mine too :) I always feel like the odd woman out when I’m around people eating Ramen bombs and snickers for dinner :)

      I do romanticize the days of snickers for dinner and twizzlers for dessert :) TVP has become impossible to find and online prices are high. I found and ordered a 5 pound bag online yesterday!

      I used to get my tvp (along with almost every other dried good under the sun) in the bulk section of grocery stores. Right now with covid they closed that all down... but that was the cheapest way for me for years and I can't wait for those bins to reopen. Same with spices.. had to actually go down the spice aisle the other day and couldn't believe that is the "norm" for pricing!

    question, if this is a vegan meal, how can you use turkey gravy? I have checked many tyimes, and all turkey gravies I have seen, including the dried instant, have some turkey base to them. There are vegan "turkey like" gravies, is that what you were actually using?

    • @PaultheBackpacker
      @PaultheBackpacker  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Without going back and listening to the video cuz it's an old one and I don't really remember what I said, I probably just call it turkey gravy but it's just a basic brown gravy.

    Hello Paul; do you have a video on your favorite warm socks and baselayers? Do you prefer synthetics, bamboo, cotton, hemp, or something else?

    • @PaultheBackpacker
      @PaultheBackpacker  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think they are mentioned here th-cam.com/video/LRdbvHoYYO4/w-d-xo.html But a couple things to remember....I am definitely in the budget backer demographic. So my winter layers are extremely budget, and when it is really cold I tend to do more layering of "fall" clothes rather than bring truly winter clothes. The other thing is that it is just simply getting warmer around here in the winter so I have not felt the need to invest in layers that would be the least worn clothes. This year the coldest temp I went out in was only 13 degrees. Last year it was in the 20s. It got colder than that, but that was just coincidence for the weekends I picked. They are all synthetic, all old or free :) I still have some polypropylene shirts I use from 25 years ago in great shape and really warm. Can't even give some suggestions since it's' not something I keep up with....however, if I had some money saved up the base layers I would try would come from kora.net/ and the easy pick for basic base layers would be something from Smartwool. In winter I do hike in Darn tough socks. Those have been great for during the day, and at night. Once i had to throw my puffy around my feet after I got into the sleeping bag, but as soon as they warmed up teh socks were enough for the rest of the night.

    Hi Paul! How much water do you add to your meals? And how long do you soak them for?

    • @PaultheBackpacker
      @PaultheBackpacker  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Funny you ask that question because I always think before I have one that I should measure and time it and I never do :) For breakfast things that are oatmeal based I don't soak. I eat it right away. I am happier with the chewier, gritty texture. For the dinners I usually add more water than what most would consider necessary to make it soupy just to get more water into me. On cooler days or doing shorter mileage days I may make it the "regular" thickness. Time wise for dinners, mashed potatoes are super quick in minutes, if there is TVP add another 10 mins. The chia pudding I make I usually soak it for about 20 minutes, but have done less, and have left it for much longer.
      So not a very good detailed answer!
      Always recommend making it home first, add less water than you think you will need, and keep adding more till you get the desired consistency. I Have just gotten to the point of knowing how much I like based on the level of food in my container. I do not ever take anything that requires more that twenty minutes (they can be soaked for more than 20, but do not require it). I know some people put water in certain things and then hike with their food soaking.

    • @PaultheBackpacker
      @PaultheBackpacker  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      About 100 my per cup! If you Are using for exercise and replacing salt, depending on the person it would be ok. But just to drink...ick. some research out there on the more salt you eat in your normal day-to-day life, more salt you end up needing when exercising. Eat less salt in normal every day food, and you don't need much salt to be replaced when you exercise :-)

    • @PaultheBackpacker
      @PaultheBackpacker  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Don't think it exists. All require cooking. I know people dehydrate refried beans, and you can also buy them dehydrated.

  • @triggersplace
    @triggersplace 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Just wanted to ask how much water you add. Do you make it thick or soupy? Thanks.

    • @PaultheBackpacker
      @PaultheBackpacker  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I never have a good answer for that question! All depends on how I feel that particular day :-) a lot of times in the summer if it's been really hot and I've been sweating I'll add more water whether it's a breakfast or a dinner. If it's winter I'll definitely use less water only because nobody really wants a cold soupy meal in the winter but if it's thicker can kind of look past the temperature of it.

      Thanks Paul! BTW, I really appreciate these videos. As a vegan and aspiring WFPB person, I’ve cringe over the “What I Eat in a day” videos of some of my favorite Thru Hikers, and then I found your channel and you’ve got it all ready figured out. @@cbasura2860 I agree with your comment about the "What I eat in a day" videos. It's not just all about calories and carbs...although, I am guilty of "advertising" the carbs and calories in my videos! it's more of a hook hoping to get folks who are not considering nutrition to stick around and watch!

    Ok very informative but all the fake gravy uses some sort of animal products (ie fat, protein, etc). If you use a gravy pack please use mushroom gravy. But check the label first
