Held off getting a 360 camera because of complaints dealing with the footage but when the X3 came out I decided to try it and so glad I did. It is a fantastic camera and It more than makes up for any limitations with its versatility and ease of use. I stopped buying GP at 9 and I think GP is getting left behind.
I have never used the GoPro Max but I can tell you our camera man for conventions has used the insta360 x3 and it has been amazing. If he left it running for a long time it did get hot and it shut down once on us. However, all the 360 footage came out great that he put on his personal channel. I am glad I watched this video because I will hold off on getting the GoPro Max 360 for myself.
As a Max user the only thing I want is the tracking feature that Insta have in their edit tools. The rest is mostly just marketing fluff that you will use once. Nice comparison video.

I have both the Insta360 X3 and the GoPro Max. I 100% agree the app is way better on the Insta360. And I'm going to keep using the Insta360 over the GoPro because of this reason. Let me explain: I started recording my hour-long cycling rides recently. When extracting the Insta360 videos to a 1080p format, I can utilize the AUTOMATIC tracking feature that tries to keep the camera facing the forward traveling direction which is what I want. The Insta360 does this very nicely although not perfect. Today when I tried doing something similar with the GoPro, extracting a 1080p video from the 360 footage, it didn't work. I couldn't find any automatic tracking feature. Both the Android app and the Windows app couldn't really do what I wanted to do. The best thing it can offer me that can make it work is the OverCapture feature. BUT I would have to review all 50 minute footage and manually track it the entire time. This to me is the deal-breaker. What if I had a 2 hour video to export? I don't want to manually track all 2 hours. With that said. Software is everything. You can have the best hardware but if the software isn't helping to make things intuitive and help me to create content easily then it's not very useful. Until GoPro can catch up to all the software features and neat-tricks that Insta360 is giving me, I'm sticking with the Insta360 family. TL;DR I much rather stick with Insta360 because of software superiority in editing and exporting.
I have only encountered one other GoPro MAX user, and my own MAX is used almost entirely in Hero mode. For me the advantage of the MAX is battery life. For my application 360 cameras are kind pointless. I am scratching my head though why you'd bother comparing a three year old device to a brand new one.
It's clear: Insta 360 is years ahead of GoPro. 360 cameras are the future of action cameras. I will be returning my GP12 and switching to Insta 360. Because apart from a few nice words and very vague hints from N. D. Woodman, Gopro has nothing concrete in hand. Who knows if they're even still working on a Max 2 when they've fallen so far behind Chinese engineering.
Hoping I didn’t make the wrong choice. I bought the max during one of the recent sales for directly from GoPro for $340 (I have their membership). Could not find an x3 that cheap. Also got a case and lens covers.
I have the same result as you except for the color preference. I prefer the x3 color quality, it has the feel and impression i have with the old GoPro against other competitor back in the days. Looks like GoPro has a very tough competitor now. If I were to buy a 360cam now, no doubt it would be the x3. Thanks for the review.
It’s 2024, and I chose the GoPro Hero MAX, and price was the reason: I found a new sealed one at 310€, and in comparison with the X3 that I couldn’t get for less that 420€, it was a deal breaker. Also, another reason is that I also have a GoPro Hero 10, so some accessories like bite mount, magnetic clip and selfie sticks are directly compatible, so I didn’t want to sell those for less than half price and buy new Insta360 accessories at full price. I kinda saved more than 110€ with this thinking, and for me it matters, since I am a beginner to 360 cameras. Thanks for the good comparison!
Erasing selfies stick - GoPro does a better job, but I give both cameras 1 point. Stabilization - GoPro holds better stabilized video, but I give a point to Insta camera. Low light - GoPro have a much brighter image in low light, but I give point to Insta camera. Ease of use for the app - bla bla bla, but I definitely give a point to Insta camera. What a review :D
I have a GoPro Hero 9 and Insta360 X3. I agree X3 is fragile (the lenses!!), and you can’t let it fall or you fall with it. But my main concern with it is the lighting. I film a lot at sunset. The X3 is pretty bad and that’s so disappointing. How does the GoPro 360 do? I also feel like my GoPro takes higher quality and easier to see video of my son wakeboarding etc with me in the boat. The x3 I couldnt make out it was him really. I don’t know how to improve that. I was considering getting the Insta360 next level up but I’m afraid I will ruin the lense(s) - my current one has a small crack. I wish we could replace those. I like GoPro I haven’t needed to replace anything yet but I have their plan in case I do someday.
I could be wrong but Insta360 sells a backpack mount for Skiing that extending with a carbon fibre rod above the back of the subject. This creates a 3rd person view and looks great as you don’t have to worry about using the selfie stick
You can mess with the stitching a bit in the software. You can pick the frame you want to "Calibrate" on and usually it will get the stitching perfect for that frame. Its a bit harder when things move around because you literally cannot stitch anything where the near and far objects are both on that line because you cannot fix the parallax and you need to pick which one gets split up. In general, the x3 and even original x did a really good job with this. Also, you use totally different software if that isnt good enough. Each lens outputs the video into a seperate file that you can do whatever you want with. The desktop app also allows you to export a version with no stitching where you can use adobe premiere. So, basically, this is as good as it is going to get. I rarely even mess with its stitching as its pretty good.
Do you prefer shooting in the vivid color profile or log and then color grading on the x3 for skiing? Also curious if you change any of the settings on the X3🤔
Hi, I usually shoot everything in the vivid color profile. I'm not a big fan of log color profiles on this kind of cameras - the heavy compression may lead to a loss of image data. Yes, I usually apply some color grading - but not in this case - for the comparison I simply used unedited video footage
Insta never has had a log that is remotely usable. Not sure why, but log usually is simply a less processed output. Their log is messed up beyond fixing and it has been that way for every camera they release with it. It doesnt matter if you have a LUT for it, 100% of the time, it looks worse than standard, which is crazy. If they had a mode that simply did zero sharpening, i would be thrilled, but you cannot get that either. People that are clueless recommend using log, because they know what it is supposed to be, but they dont get that log doesnt exactly work with insta. I think they just copied gopro and didnt understand what log actually meant.
Funny, I'm actually experiencing ALOT of reliability issues with my x3 barely starts up and always crashes. Sent it back they send the mother board was damaged? My gopro on the other has is flawless
I'm very interested in the Insta360 X3, but not at all in selfies of myself. Though I love the 360 effect, I only ever see demoes of that effect here with selfies of the person making the video. Is it possible to get something close to that, but without having to always see the person making the video? I don't mean single-lens mode, but using both lenses for 360, but somehow keeping out myself, at least to some extent. I just want to capture the area around me- in front, behind, above, below, etc, but not of me! 🙂Thank you!
I rarely am in my 360 shots. The easy way to do it is just hold the camera on a stick over your head. I have a ballcap on and you cannot see me, you just see the top of my ball cap if you look straight down. Its like you are carrying the stick a bit behind you and over your shoulder, so your carry hand is down. Sort of like you are carrying a flag pole. This also looks pretty non intrusive and people are relaxed and natural. You can walk all over and get great 360 shots and not have your self in any shot and see in all directions. Most people never even realize I am holding the camera, because you can see in all directions fine.

Destruction of GoPro? I bought the Insta360 x3 and it was one of the worst investments I’ve made. It’s baffling how almost no reviewer is talking about how terrible and grainy the image quality is in anything other than blazing sunlight (and even then, edges of things look noisy and unstable). The color science is clearly better on the GoPro Max and even though the GoPro technically has a lower maximum bitrate, it still manages to look way better somehow. I sold the X3 less than 24 hours later after purchase
Huge fan of the comparison! I went with the GPM and I feel like many others I have been a GoPro owner for awhile. I have their subscription and plenty of mounts for helmets etc that already fit. Would have been a little bit of a pain to relearn an application and buy mounts for a new Camera. Your input was all very helpful for sure though!
Question - the Insta360 is much taller. If mounted on a helmet, it appears to be much more difficult to avoid having it hit by a ski lift protective bar, compared to the GoPro. Is that a concern?

Honestly I like my Max more, since with its small screen plus it size and square size makes it more friendly when you have a 3Kg case Drone on your Backpack, I aint rich, I just like buying camera Gear when I can to get into Creator Content Bussiness! Honestly, you dont need the best in terms of Hardware, a 360 camera is already a game changer for video and vacations! Mine was a little overpriced, but for now is a little more cheaper!
I have recently bought a GoPro Max, but the software is absolutely useless... Player, Studio, Quik, whatever it is or was called, it doesn't work. At least not on photos. Is there any software that can open a 360 photo??
The resolution comparison as well as others are a bit disingenuous. The gopro was obviously zoomed much further than the insta360. A bit suspicious honestly there is zero reason to zoom/crop the GoPro more
Gopro may release a new 360 camera. The max is very old at this point, so its obvious the insta will be better in most categories. These 2 companies tend to leap frog each other, but gopro not updating this thing for so long may indicate they are done with 360 as insta only exists because gopro has stopped being competitive in the 360 area. I hope gopro releases some 360 stuff. Nobody has an 8k 360 twin one inch camera that can shoot 30fps video, so that is clearly what everyone is waiting for. I think you cant really make that camera in a small form factor though, so its going to be interesting to see who does what. The insta twin one inch 360 is a solid step up in quality, but it has issues with no waterproofing, low battery life, terrible screen and it takes forever to swap battery or sd card given its modular design just gets in the way. If gopro released a twin one inch 360 camera, it would not have those issues and would be the clear favorite. The modular design of insta would be great if they released the vr180 module for it, but they never did, so it really adds no benefit.
I disagree with the portability result. All u need for x3 is a lens cap and its good to go. Also, it has better size than gopro because it is smaller, go pro is wide enough, x3 fits in your pocket.
on audio quality you forgot to mention the noise cancelling! in wind as most extreme sports involve speed you can actually hear clearer on the x3 over the max, true in quiet the max sounds better but yeah thats not what its gonna get used for xD
Very nice comparison of these two cameras. I agree with most of your assessment. However, the one area where I disagree strongly is your assessment of low light performance. I believe the Max is a clear winner in this category. I just spent the last two days comparing an Insta 360 X3 with my three year old GoPro Max. I found that the X3 performance in low light was poor and seemed to contain much more noise. Although you didn't mention the fact that the X3 has a built in HDR option, a great feature under some conditions such as bright sunlight, I did find that one should never activate this mode in low to moderate light conditions. Even in standard mode my X3 performed poorly compared to my older GoPro Max indoors in dim light. In very low light conditions, the HDR video was totally unusable.
From every video comparison side by side you can clearly see that the Insta X3 is much better than Gopro Max, but almost every youtuber says the opposite. My opinion is that they all get paid from GoPro. I can't understand how you can say that image quality is better on GoPro Max. Insta X3 is the clear winner in basically every context.
I have now drowned my third X2, will go for the inferior GoPro because i don't see the shitty design of the battery closing is fixed on X3... For windsurfing Insta360 can not handle my abuse🤷 I will miss the Insta app and software....
Nice video, this comment is about GoPro as a company My experiences with GoPro have been super negative. I won’t ever buy another. Issues have been connecting to app issues, videos not showing up on app when it connects, splitting videos that are longer than 7 mins or jumping into slow motion by itself. They always lie about shipping times. Won’t ever buy another GoPro it’s crap and their customer Service department in the Philippines is useless. I returned my GoPro 11 and the GoPro 8 will be my last ever. Not to mention they lied about the free year of GoPro subscription as they would not extend my current subscription for another year after I bought a go pro 11. They are the worst company.😅 I joined the Insta X3 Family and loving it so far!

The chromatic aberration effect on the 2 labels hurt my eyes ;()
Gopro max power buttons stiffens up in the cold ... I have missed many shots because of this problem .

both cameras are not optimal to wear on the helmet - and yes, you do have to bend down to avoid hitting the bar.

If gopro released a twin one inch 360 camera, it would not have those issues and would be the clear favorite. The modular design of insta would be great if they released the vr180 module for it, but they never did, so it really adds no benefit.
I disagree with the portability result. All u need for x3 is a lens cap and its good to go. Also, it has better size than gopro because it is smaller, go pro is wide enough, x3 fits in your pocket.
Crazy how people are comparing a 4 year old camera to a one year old camera. Just to show how good GoPro cameras are.
on audio quality you forgot to mention the noise cancelling! in wind as most extreme sports involve speed you can actually hear clearer on the x3 over the max, true in quiet the max sounds better but yeah thats not what its gonna get used for xD

Very nice comparison of these two cameras. I agree with most of your assessment. However, the one area where I disagree strongly is your assessment of low light performance. I believe the Max is a clear winner in this category. I just spent the last two days comparing an Insta 360 X3 with my three year old GoPro Max. I found that the X3 performance in low light was poor and seemed to contain much more noise. Although you didn't mention the fact that the X3 has a built in HDR option, a great feature under some conditions such as bright sunlight, I did find that one should never activate this mode in low to moderate light conditions. Even in standard mode my X3 performed poorly compared to my older GoPro Max indoors in dim light. In very low light conditions, the HDR video was totally unusable.

From every video comparison side by side you can clearly see that the Insta X3 is much better than Gopro Max, but almost every youtuber says the opposite. My opinion is that they all get paid from GoPro. I can't understand how you can say that image quality is better on GoPro Max. Insta X3 is the clear winner in basically every context.
I have now drowned my third X2, will go for the inferior GoPro because i don't see the shitty design of the battery closing is fixed on X3... For windsurfing Insta360 can not handle my abuse🤷 I will miss the Insta app and software....

My experiences with GoPro have been super negative. I won’t ever buy another. Issues have been connecting to app issues, videos not showing up on app when it connects, splitting videos that are longer than 7 mins or jumping into slow motion by itself. They always lie about shipping times. Won’t ever buy another GoPro it’s crap and their customer Service department in the Philippines is useless. I returned my GoPro 11 and the GoPro 8 will be my last ever. Not to mention they lied about the free year of GoPro subscription as they would not extend my current subscription for another year after I bought a go pro 11. They are the worst company.😅 I joined the Insta X3 Family and loving it so far!
Maybe you don’t know how to use the Camera in the app I have no problems at all with the app. Downloading my video or pictures.

Really nice video. I own a GoPro2, 3, 8, 9 and two GoPro Max. I never had any issues with them but since I was going to get rid of the 8 and 9 and get the 11, I might try the Insta360 X3. Why not.
