The Problem With GD Game Remakes

  • We need to talk about these Geometry Dash 2.2 levels.
    While you may be impressed by levels that remake games like Mario Kart, Terraria, or Five Nights at Freddy’s in GD, the trend of remaking outside games in Geometry Dash has many problems with it, could lead to major legal issues for creators and RobTop, and might leave the game’s community forever changed. This video uncovers why this is an issue and what you can do about it yourself.
    Please keep in mind that these are strictly my own opinions, and be respectful when discussing the levels and creators in this video.

    The funny thing is how simple the solution to this is - don't associate the level with existing IP. Theres nothing wrong with recreating games as far as mechanics go, infact thats the most impressive part of these types of levels and are usually not controlled legally. These recreations dont need to be 1 to 1 recreations to succeed. Like the mario kart level could have been given its own unique theme and graphics and been an original karting level, then there would be no problems. Same with fnaf, if the guy made his own assets (and characters/setting for that matter) instead of ripping straight from a preexisting game, it would be far more impressive and no longer a legal minefield. But they just can't resist the extra attention that they'll get by associating their level with a big IP, and it ultimately makes things worse for everyone.

    i dont think you can just tell people to not remake a game in geometry dash.. the (in my opinion) point of making these levels is trying to push the boundaries of making levels, or atleast going into that direction.. the creativity comes from trying to translate the game's mechanics into geometry dash triggers (im pretty sure theres still a big difficulty in managing to get that work). popularity is also a common motivation for some creators to try and make the best things possible
    ignoring the legal stuff, something like the fnaf remake, terraria etc. is actually really cool, even if it didnt take too much effort to build. i still find it insane how people did that in just 2 weeks

    • @GDCreatorSchool
      @GDCreatorSchool  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +16

      It is perfectly possible to push the boundaries of making levels by making your own original minigame in GD; Serponge and Spu7nix are two examples of that.

    • @steechy
      @steechy 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      @@GDCreatorSchool I never really meant that *only* game remakes can push the boundaries, every type of level can. I'm just saying that remakes of the game can do it just as well as own original games can. Of course, original games are cool as heck and i love playing/watching them, and are way more impressive if done right, but i don't think game remakes should be downplayed just because they lack creativeness in game design

    • @GDCreatorSchool
      @GDCreatorSchool  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

      Should a level that copies a preexisting game in every way get the same attention as a fully original level?

    • @steechy
      @steechy 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +14

      @@GDCreatorSchool It depends on what the game remaked is. Let's say, hypothetically, a DOOM remake was made in geometry dash which uses very complex trigger setups, techniques, algorithms and whatnot, which havent been present in any original levels before. Of course, that level does deserve attention, as these new algorithms etc. are open-sourced and everyone can take a look at these and use them, therefore also opening up the abilities for new original games to come out on geometry dash

    • @steechy
      @steechy 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      @@GDCreatorSchool If it's just a normal game remake without anything notable in it, well, then it shouldn't get that much attention than an entire original game that doesnt use anything new. Still, finishing a game remake in geometry dash helps people improve at minigames alot and will probably end up most of the time with the creator making their own minigames in the future

  • @kannolotl
    @kannolotl 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +25

    Not quite sure I understand why game remakes are being regarded as plagarism in 2:32. Plagarism means to take somebody's ideas and passing them off as one's own, but remakes in *any* medium are.. you know, remakes! Nobody is really thinking that "Night Plus II" was YaYmsc's original idea, I don't think.

    • @GDCreatorSchool
      @GDCreatorSchool  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      Good point, the phrasing there can be a bit contentious depending on how you view it. I see the idea of completely remaking a game in GD as plagiarism because nothing original is added to the concept; even if you credit the original it is still a bad thing. You would still get in trouble in school if you copy-pasted an entire essay from an online article, even if you gave credit to the original author.

    • @kannolotl
      @kannolotl 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      @@GDCreatorSchool Right, but I don't think that comparison works for videogames -- especially ones with an editor. The fact that it's made in a (even still relatively) much more primitive engine is the main focus point. Much like a CPU that runs Minecraft in Minecraft, a Linux emulator in Scratch, or a calculator in Mario Maker.
      I absolutely agree that Night Plus II seems much more complicated than it really is, but you can't say that because that's true for one remake level, that it's true for *every* remake level (fallacy of composition to anyone curious out there :P). By assuming that, you dismiss any high-quality remake of much more complicated games -- 3d games like Minecraft, an inevitable remake of doom, or even remakes of games with different physics and mechanics like Celeste, basically any example that's more complicated than a handful of remade sprites, backgrounds, and a simple algorithm. Also, you absolutely have to come up with ideas to implement systems in remakes, etc etc but I want to have a real and good conversation so I'm not going to bore you :)

    • @GDCreatorSchool
      @GDCreatorSchool  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I never said that Night Plus II being less complicated extends to all other game recreations - in fact I mention two other recreations in the video which require far more effort than it! I also mentioned that technically impressive work is why I like older remakes as well. I’m not fully anti-game-remake or anything, if you watch the video.

Apps like scratch have a bunch of Mario remakes and none of them have been copyrighted. Why can't we appreciate things and have fun? "You might be in trouble if blah blah." It's Geometry Dash. If worst comes to worst the level is deleted. Done and done. The only money being made is not by people making the game remakes but by the creator of the "game engine." If Rob gets sued it'll look real stupid. I know that copyright stuff might hit me square in the face and absolutely destroy my argument but like I said, you can just delete the level. Think about it, we have FNAF in gd, we hace Terraria bossfights in gd, we have tons of other video game remakes in gd. If Rob didn't get sued before he sure as hell isn't getting sued now. Also bringing up the point of "they could sue" makes it more likely to happen because more people know about it, it gets more traction, and the company sees it and potentially does it.

    This is why I like the Getting over it style levels. It's a genre rather than copying the original game art- the only thing not original is that there are no checkpoints, it's usually jank and you have to climb. That's a creative approach
    The fnaf remake seems like it could be the Woodkid situation again, which is completely fair, and it probably won't get rated. It's a shame because if there wasn't as much copied art it would still look fine and could probably get epic- the strategy of fnaf is still a concept unexplored in gd until now. At the moment I don't think it should be rated though, and neither should the mario level. They should stay as cool minigames and nothing more

    • @UpToSpeed0
      @UpToSpeed0 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Even if night plus had original art assets, it's still just making a worse version of the game with nothing new added onto it. Sure it would be much more impressive, but that defense doesn't hold up because of how most of the AI and controls were trivialized by a few triggers.
      Also, considering that it's based off of a fan recreation of the original FNAF+ that was specifically taken down by the creator of the FNAF franchise, there is an astronomically low chance that it would ever be rated, as I assume Robtop would prefer not to get into any trouble.

    In accordance with the new policies of the game itself, it says:
    "You agree that you will not, under any circumstances:
    Make available through the Service any material or information that infringes any copyright, trademark, patent, trade secret, right of privacy, right of publicity, or other right of any person or entity or that impersonates any other person"
    And also below:
    "RobTop assumes no responsibility for the conduct of any user submitting any User Content, and assumes no responsibility for monitoring the Service for inappropriate content or conduct. We do not, and cannot, pre-screen or monitor all User Content. Your use of the Service is at your own risk. By using the Service, you may be exposed to User Content that is offensive, indecent or otherwise not in line with your expectations. You bear all risks associated with the use of any User Content available in connection with the Service. At our discretion, our representatives or technology may monitor and/or record your interaction with the Service or communications (including without limitation chat text) when you are using the Service"
    Interpreting this and since every player has accepted the new policies of the game. RobTop could not legally be sued and instead the one who will be sued will be the creator of the level itself. RobTop will probably only be responsible for warning the player, deleting the level, or even contacting the player depending on the severity of the violation and how strongly they decide to sue. But well, sometimes it is different, maybe it is impossible to contact the player, and in that case I think that RobTop would have problems.

    Taking ideas from other games is okay. But trying to do a 1:1 recreation of it is just too much. We literally used to be more creative and know how to tackle our limitations. But I think making 2d games seems a little too simple now but was praised because not many people do so.

    I am currently working on a story island game based off of RPG games, sure it’s creative but I was also working on a longer super Mario 64 game, seeing this video with you saying that “it’s not taking that much effort” really hurts me. I know nothing about triggers and it needs 3D collisions and raycasting. I know you need to be creative but these projects are also pretty creative as you can add in stuff that isn’t originally there, sure copying is bad but the creators also worked really hard on their versions

    • @GDCreatorSchool
      @GDCreatorSchool  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I stated that they collectively don’t take *as much* effort *as people think*, and I also give examples of high effort remakes in the video. Furthermore, the chance to add stuff that isn’t originally there doesn’t mean people actually do that or that they are necessarily creative in that sense. Please rewatch the parts where I make these points and discuss what you can do to make your game remakes more generally accepted, and best of luck on your projects.

    I feel like you're blaming the wrong people, it's not necessarily the community's fault, but rather the developer's. RobTop is the one who keeps providing the community tools that make it easier and easier to just make an entirely different game inside of Geometry Dash, and is actively encouraging it by rating and featuring said levels. Furthermore, the fact that there are more tools to make "remake levels" just undermines the impressive levels the community previously produced.
    With that being said, I think calling these games "unoriginal" or "unimpressive" is just straight up wrong. While it has a different creative process than traditional levels, the effort is still there. People have to learn how to use new tools and an absolutely horrendous editor, all while trying to keep as close to the source material as possible. They don't have to bother much on assets or brainstorming, but they instead have to invest that time and effort into making the thing work as intended. And frankly, even though they are "rip-offs" of pre-existing games, a lot of them end up having more thought put into them than some of the more recent popular levels (although this could be a preference thing).

    not really related to copyright but... having tools to make something that used to be hard easyer is a topic that gets hated on literally every community and i wonder why.
    skilled creators will make better stuff than what we had before and worse creators will make what used to be best of the best more average. do people not want worse creators to make as good of a things as best creators in past because it takes less effort or something? not like thats a problem because the peak gets ingresed even more with more tools and skill still will be important.

    I think the bigger problem with 2.2 levels is that most of them are pretty bad, but that's to be expected since the updates barely been out long enough to make a level. I don't think it will be until late 2024 when creators get their mind around all the new features and create actually good levels.

    another problem with remakes is why even play them? Like 99% of them are just objectively worse versions of the original work. As cool/impressive as stella infection is for example, I'd rather just actually fight astrum deus in terraria than play a janky version of it in geometry dash. Most people play geometry dash to play geometry dash, not a worse version of another game that they've already played.

    A lot of interesting points here. I agree it's a lot easier, in some circumstances, to make a game remake now. It's unimpressive if somebody takes an old flash game platform level and just pastes it into GD. However, if someone were to remake a game like Baba is You or SSR, it would take a lot of impressive work with GD triggers, even with the help of 2.2, and be much more difficult than creating an average epic-rated platform level IMO. Of course copyright is a whole nother can of worms.

      I said I’m not a lawyer for a reason - copyright is a complex issue and there is a lot of nuance to it. Nintendo and other places still take down fan games made with no express purpose of profit, for example, and I also don’t know how much “fair use” may apply as it depends on a judge’s interpretation of how “transformative” a work is.

      Even if you're not doing it for profit, it can still get DMCA'd if it looks remotely identical and/or you had no permission from the author to make a copy of sort (it's a legal issue, and quite bullshit since it disables people who love the game(s) to make cool stuff)). Though, copyright is a large can of worms in of itself so it'll depend if companies/devs actually care if game recreation in GD is actually a problem to them.
