This is a nice workaround, but fact is this critical bug has been present for too long and is too severe for a subscription product to simply respond by correcting it in the next LR release. Very disappointed in Adobe.

I totally agree with you. How long have Adobe been at this? This should not have happened in the first place. Very amateurish on the part of Adobe and like you say, we pay a subscription to Adobe and they should jump on this straight away and not leave us to suffer their mistakes.

My experience has been that if i open PS first, then try to send an image to PS, after several minutes, Lightroom will display a message that it is unable to open PS (regular version and beta), however after dismissing that message, the image does indeed open in PS. It does take several minutes. images have always opened if you wait long enough. Not sure if your method is faster, seems like it might be a little faster, but does involve more steps. Guess it will depend on your patience which way to go.

I'm using the latest versions of LR and PS on a M1 Mac Mini. After trying to open the file in PS by right-clicking in LR and having it fail as in this video, I immediately drag the file from LR to the PS icon in the taskbar. It opens quickly. A while later, as I'm working on the file in PS, I always get a message from LR that it could not open the file in PS. 🙂

My work-a-round was to downgrade Photoshop Beta to version 24.7. I did not have to fix my Lightroom version.

My workaround on my Windows 11 system is to wait one minute for an error message then click OK. Lightroom then makes a second try, this time creating a new TIF and successfully launching Ps with that file open. No need to synchronize. Works best when I need a cup of coffee. 😂

I just saw this video and had not realized that there is an issue, so I tried it. As of 8/18/23 10:55 am eastern time, I do not have this problem. I use the shortcut CMD E on a Mac and am running PS v24.7.0. and LR Classic v12.4. So hopefully the problem has been fixed and the workaround is no longer necessary. But thanks very much for publishing the workaround.
A few minutes later. I just updated LR to v12.5 and tried again and while the transfer to PS works perfectly, when I close PS a window opens asking if I want to save the changes even though no changes have been made. So maybe there is now another bug needing fixing.

  • @edwardme2
    @edwardme2 ปีที่แล้ว

So glad to hear it's not just my Lightroom/Photoshop doing this. But my workaround is much less convoluted. I export it to a filter, such as one of the Topaz filters, which converts it to a Tif. I don't have do anything in the filter & the tif is automatically added to my original LR folder. I then drag it into PS finish there & save it. The saved version remains in LR, no synchronization necessary.

When I do I get a warning that Photoshop was unable to open original file and editing will not be possible. At that point Photoshop DOES open with the original file and editing is then possible. This all takes about one minute.

Thank you for highlighting this - I never once thought that it could be a bug in LRC / PS (I mean - how could it be, especially with such an old and common task as "Edit in"?). I agree with other comments made about how disappointing this is - Adobe's whole game is software, and Creative Cloud is (in my opinion) super expensive, so one definitely wouldn't (shouldn't?) expect this. Also as others have commented, if you wait long enough 😠LRC will eventually realise that there is an error ("can't launch" - even though PS is already open!?) - click OK - wait longer - and then it works. VERY frustrating and an additive time-waster. Once again, thank you for posting this - at least I now know that there is an actual problem!

Hello Anthony, it still works the way you are used to do normally, but you have to be patient. After you send your picture to Photoshop, it starts and then - nothing happened, as you said. Bute after roundabout 2 min, pops a sign in Lightroom, it says approximately (i only know the german popup) there is no Photoshop 2024. After you confirm the message, the normal process (creating a TIFF-File etc.) starts and youre Photo is opened in Photoshop ready to work with. It is still a bug, but i think your workaround needs the same time to get the result. Greetings from Germany

I could load my photos from lightroom to Beta no problem. Then today when i tried to use the gererated fill I got a prompt saying you need the new version of beta for this function to work. Here we go again. I updated the beta and hey ho the files dont open from lightroom to beta. I think PS messed it up big time. I dont think its a lightroom issue. Even easier way that works for me on M1 iMac. When exporting click the catalog and stack options and also add opening which ever version of Photoshop you want to use as action to be done after Export. Save this as export preset. Then you can right click an image and choose to export with that preset. Opens in Photoshop and is then stacked with original on exit, no need to synchronise. As file already in LR you may need to read metadata from disc to get things like edit time updated. If you are editing several files in same version of Photoshop in one session you can use keyboard shortcut to Export with Previous. Doesn’t help with special cases like selecting several files to open at layers, but helps me. I can send PSD files to Photoshop with standard edit in so easy to send a file back for extra editing.

After the deinstallation of the beta version I had the problem described in the video: Photoshop starts but don't load any pictures. I then downgraded Photoshop via the creative cloud app to an older version, and then reinstalled the actual version: problem solved, everything works fine since then.
I think this is the problem using a beta version of a software, there is always a risk that something doesn't work as expected. Therefore it's called beta. And because Photoshop and Lightroom are very connected, this can cause problems. My tipp on this is: leave the beta for test purposes with professionals and use the official series version instead. There is no bug and it works fine.

Not sure many understand that beta software is not release ready software. Beta is used to gain customer feedback on proposed features, and to help find bugs before the product is released. In this case the interface between LR and PS release and beta products requires changes to fix the issue. Sounds like Adobe have decided to change LR rather than PS to fix the issue "when both LR and PS are released". Note released, not beta.

I find the transfer from LR Classic to PS works fine. And with the latest versions on an M1 MacBook Pro. But I don’t have the PS Beta installed. Might the issue be with having the Beta version? You can never complain about a Beta version not working right, because it’s Beta and you’re testing it for Adobe, at your risk.
An issue I do find with PS is that sometimes all the UXP extensions I’ve installed go missing. Or they reappear but as floating panels and not docked where I had them. Apparently that is a known and very annoying PS bug.
Thanks for all your great tips.

I found this issue 3 or 4 months ago and had to revert to my previous version of PS to resolve it which was frustrating. The Adobe TS guy told me then it was a PS issue with the latest version and they were aware of the issue. Whether in LR or PS, this is yet one more example of Adobe being unresponsive to resolve critical issues. For a subscription based product it is really frustrating to have to wait until they get around to fixing an issue they created. Adobe, please send me a feedback form.

Right click on image in LRC, click Edit In-> Open as smart object in photoshop. It will then open the image in photoshop, you can then choose to convert smart object back to a regular layer.

didn't work for me either. That was my workaround a week or so ago but that just stopped. I suspect it is because Beta and even the Neural filters etc., are processed in the cloud and once you are there Adobe can and does change things on your installation of the program.

I had the same or similar problem, "edit in" Photoshop 2023" not working in LR; combing internet sites for possible answer(s) yesterday, I came to Reddit and in one conversation a fellow said he'd re-installed Photoshop and the problem vanished. So, I tried that, and…YES, back to normal. With different versions, beta, etc., I'm not surprised that a problem would crop up somewhere; hopefully this helps someone here.

It's been my experience when PS opens up just as you demonstrated - if you wait a minute or 2 - you'll eventually get an error message in LR saying it couldn't open up PS 2023. Acknowledge that error message and your image will open up in PS.

  • @richam05

A faster workaround works on Mac (don't know about PC). In the export dialog, check "Add to this Catalog" in the Export Location section, and select ""Show in Finder" from the After Export Menu in the Post-processing section. Save as a new user preset. This leaves a finder window open with the new file selected. Right click and select "open with" and scroll down to the PS version desired. No need to sync the folder later -- it's already there.
I even set up a new rename protocol to add "PSBeta" (or identifying suffix of your choice) to the file name. The protocol is set up by choosing the "Edit..." menu item under the "Rename To:" menu in the File Naming section. After the protocol is set up, choose it under under the "Rename To:" and check the box. This opens the file in PS with the new file name and allows the "Save" function to work normally.

It opens fine into Photoshop beta. When you make a selection in PS, you don't right click into the selection? How about Delete and Fill? I only ask since I only use LR on a rare occasion. The RAW or .nef files I have in LRC open OK into PS v24.7 but not those that have been edited. These same RAW files won't open into PS beta however.

What I have seen is that it does not export the NEF. However I save a tif in LR by exporting. Then send the tif file to open in PS. After 2 minutes, it gives a message cannot open the file because it cannot find PS. Click okay and voila it opens the same in PS. Rest if the steps as you mentioned stay relevant. Also while I have PS Beta installed I cannot access the same or change to it on the preference tab. Weird.

I like my workaround better. I click edit in photoshop 3 separate times and go get a shot of bourbon...it doesn't matter which one but while we wait for lightroom's next wonky upgrade I've been using Basil Haydin's. When I come back it says that photoshop could not be opened successfully. I just click out of the notices and magically in the upper left corner of lighroom it says that image is being prepared for photoshop and voila everything is great until I've round-tripped several photos and forget how much I love/hate adobe.

Great! I have had this issue and thought I was doing something wrong. I am new to LR and have another question. Is there a way that I can save the LR changes in a file and not create a new file each time I go to PS? If I visit PS twice, I end up with 4 files - raw file, LR file (from doing denoise), two TIFF files from my PS edits. Like I said, I am new to LR, so I'm probably not doing something correct.Thanks.
