Thankyou for this video. I’ve seen others that talk about having/using wire trays etc and I was worried that I didn’t have that equipment! This is easy and something I can readily do so I’m off to harvest mine now 🙂. Again, Thankyou.
Hi great video! I'm about to harvest and dry my garlic today! Is your garage an open garage or closed? I'm wondering if I should dry them in my storage room or my open car port. Is free flowing air important for drying garlic? It's my first year of harvesting. Thank you.
Just a normal garage that is closed most of the day. I usually open the doors once I get home in the evening for a couple of hours. Always seems to work great! Thank you for watching our video!
We do too! It's such a fantastic crop to grow. We never really grew onions or garlic until one year when we tried them in a container on our balcony garden in Buffalo, and we've been hooked ever since.
Ty for this video . We started growing Garlic about four years ago and it’s my absolute favourite thing to grow. Are you located in southern Ontario? I was just wondering if you’d be willing to sell me one of those beautiful amazing heritage garlic bulbs. I do love a good story too , And that is absolutely amazing that garlic was growing in that area 100 years ago. Thought it wouldn’t hurt to ask lol
There is another option: Grow Garlic as a Perennial, harvesting some of the sprouts as Spring Garlic as well as the Scapes. In the Fall, I find it cheaper and less work to buy my Garlic Bulbs at the local Farmer's Market and save my own crop for Spring when a fresh sprout is a tasty treat. German Purple overwinters well here in Maine.
@@gentleillusion I just let them naturalize, giving them a couple of weedings if they need it, and a bit of fertilizer to keep them thriving. I guess you can mulch them as well, bit they seem to do just fine au naturel. I also grow leeks and chives as a perennial. I start harvesting the Chives first, then the Leeks then Garlic until the Summer solstice, when the Leeks and Garlic put-out Scapes. When the Chves have finished blooming and before they go to seed, I mow them to a few inches of the ground, and by the time the Garlic and Leek Scapes are done, I can begin harvesting Chives again..
I think you could have gone a little longer before harvesting. I harvest when the three lower leaves are yellow. Then you will have 4 layers of parchment and extra growth time. Or another indicator is when the scapes stand up straight.
Thank you for such an informative video.
You're welcome! This was a fun one to make!

WOW, 120 year old garlic, well done.
Thank you! It's a cool heirloom, which we love! Tasty too

Very informative, thank you!
I'm glad you enjoyed it; thank you for watching! Garlic is so rewarding to grow!
How's the flavour on that german purple ? I planted Egyptian white, White porcelain and Tuscan.
It's delicious: very rich, and a little nutty. So much better than store bought!
after refrigerating how long can you keep them in a open air baggies
I store them in a box in the basement until March or so, then peel and freeze. Never tried the fridge
Waiting patiently for my garlic crop. Man i love garlic.

We're about 45 minutes south of Buffalo in NY... I would happily give you a bulb if not for issues with plants over the border...
Good information. Thanks
I'm glad you found it helpful! We can't wait to harvest in a few weeks.
Nice video thank you
Glad you enjoyed it! We just harvested this year's garlic a couple of weeks ago.

Do you cover it in the winter so the soil doesn't get wet, or do you leave it open to the elements?

I just plant the cloves in October and they come up each spring. Super easy crop to grow!

I don't harvest them, except if I need cloves to increase my garden, otherwise, I leave them be, even easier.
I'll have to try that with a few this year, just for fun. Thank you for the idea!
would you sell me one of your plantable springville garlic bulbs? I live in Canada and we love Garlic here.
I wish I could, but I can't ship any plant material to Canada unfortunately.

We probably could have gone a bit longer, but I also wanted to get our fall crops in. Fall around here is very unpredictable!
