What do they look like in fall?
Nothing too spectacular but they do turn reddish before the leaves fall off
Thank you for sharing, I’m growing avocados and citrus in ga and I brought it inside my garage and the leaves are turning yellow I guess my garage is very dark. Thank you
Does it require 2 different plants for pollination?
@@melonbythesea yes, these do need a different variety for pollination
I have Collins and North pawpaw trees that are fruiting well, but the squirrels are destroying all the fruit. How do you keep them away? Thank you so much!
@@woodenhill6314 So far the squirrels don't seem interested in the pawpaws although they love apples and peaches and everything else... Maybe that's the secret?! You might try putting out a bird feeder. That will keep the squirrels occupied all day long, possibly sparing your fruit. The people next door have feeding stations and that might help us as well since they eat bird seed and corn all day long
My garage stays 65-75° during the winter. Outside gets down to 15° sometimes at night & up to 60° during the day. Would keeping them alive with grow lights in my situation be best? St George, Utah zone 8b Tip of the Mojave Desert. Sincerely, Matthew
@@MatthewsFabrication that's a good question... I'm not sure if figs would drop their leaves and go dormant if it doesn't get cold... If not then grow lights would work great! Basically treat it like a citrus tree for the winter
What state! did the boxes come from!
@@nightrunner1456 Michigan, although this particular place is no longer open unfortunately
It’s pronounced an-eese not anus🤣
Very cool! I got into grafting and propagating fruit trees a few years ago. Working on multi-variety stone fruit trees and well and muti-variety Pears and of course Apples. Still early in the process. The addiction is real lol! Thanks for sharing.
@@whaleonitduster3402 The addiction is definitely very real! We just had our first apple from these grafts, a Cox Orange Pippin, so I can only imagine once the tree really gets going
Looking good!
Nice which state are you in? Im in Texas wondering if theyll hold up to summer sun
We're in NY about an hour south of Buffalo
Could you go over the proper way to cut these back?
That's a great idea! I'll try to film that video this weekend
I am in Zone 5B and all of my fig trees in containers still have their leaves. It is scheduled to get down to 17 degrees this weekend. Should I bring the trees in even though their leave are still green and have not fallen off?
@@LennyPiazza-kh7dr I probably would just to be safe .. you could put them back out once it's not as cold during the day
@@captiveroots3037 Thanks. That is what I figured also.
Wow. I'm amazed to see that your seedling trees are that big and no fruitbuds. Really interesting.
I know! I'm hoping that I just missed them somehow so I'll definitely check once the leaves drop
did you have a humidifier running in the basement?
Nope, just the dehumidifier. It stays about 20-30% humidity in winter... Not great for the plants but needed for the basement
@@captiveroots3037 I'm planning to put the citrus trees in the basement this winter after watched your video. Is a dehumidifier necessary?
@stanl8187 not for the trees... It's actually not great for them to be super dry but we need one in our basement. If you don't already use one the trees definitely don't need it
What a beautiful collection. I had no clue pawpaw could grow in NY. Im glad to find your channel! Thanks
@@LoganShelton-rh3lp they grow amazingly well here!
Great information thanks
Wow very cool!! pretty trees and fruit!
do they take a long time to ripen compared to your other peppers?
@@OsirusHandle They definitely do... For us they're a September into October crop whereas most peppers start ripening mid August
@captiveroots3037 thanks!

Where you located I would like to purchase some

Does this flower smell..??
Not really... If anything it's a slight pollen type smell but nothing noticeable
@captiveroots3037 thanks a lot for your info..🙏
u don't slice for smoking what drying temp
@@scottjones4888 I didn't this time but it's not a bad idea just to get more surface area .. I set the smoker to 200-250. It's not incredibly accurate but it's close enough to do a pretty good job.
@@captiveroots3037 what temp for dehydrator
Will the plant re-grow it's leaves after dropping them? I have the same problem
@@robertszabo4479 oh yeah, it's a common occurrence for certain citrus trees. They'll grow back either over winter or once they get back outside
Great vid and info! Thanks!!❤
Your trees are beautiful. I am on the eastern end of Long Island. I have a lot of small trees that have been growing under shade cloth, and about ten trees that are over six feet and flowered this year. My problem is that the large trees, which are grown without protection now for two years, really got beaten up from the sun/wind combo. Have you ever experienced anything like that? I think I'm going to have to come up with some type of wind break or get them some shade.
@@mikecf1 Thank you for the kind words! Your larger trees should be fine with sun, especially once they are a couple years old. I bet wind is the issue, because of their large leaves they can get beat up on especially windy days.
Loving your videos. Thank you for sharing
How far did you plant your seedling next to the fence? I'm new to pawpaw and i'm thinking of planting behind the fence to block some winds
@@2muchfun190 I would give them about 4-5 feet from the fence, and 6-8 feet between trees.
@@captiveroots3037 Thanks!!
Very nice 👏🏻💪🏻👌🏻
Fabulous video. We bought a home in 2020 and in spring/summer 2024 tried to incorporate mainly perennials and expand our beds quite a bit. My wife and I started working from home in the past year or two, so we appreciate taking our breaks while admiring the bees and doing a little bit of work at a time. I have been especially interested in lupines and baptisia. You did an excellent breakdown and I hope you don't mind me saying you also have an excellent speaking voice and style of presenting. I may let you know how the plants go in the coming year!
@@cosmoblack2852 Thank you! I would definitely be interested in hearing how the plants do!
in the Dominican republic its used in many dishes its called aji gustoso
@@brishellrodriguez I definitely have to grow it again and give it better growing conditions!
👍
Got me first fig tree in June, it's just a baby. I was going to over winter outside but now I'm thinking the garage. It's heated but only to 35-40. Is that to cold?
That should be fine depending on variety... As long as it's above freezing I would think it would be ok, but definitely check the cold hardiness of the variety
@captiveroots3037 i don't know the variety however it is a sucker from a fig that currently grows in SE Michigan.
@@DawnieGTheBeekeeper it should be fine in the garage... Most figs can survive down to 20 degrees or so and your garage would be well above that
Thank you!
Thanks , I just cut off my only fruit bud branch 😢 while I was trying to transplant the tree. Been wondering for a week what were those fat buds. Now I know😮
@@starinthesky1520 I've definitely been there ... Good news is these trees almost always bud out and flower a year or two before the fruit actually sticks, so you likely didn't delay any harvest in the future
@@captiveroots3037 thanks I feel better 😀 I was told that paw paw trees from suckers will not fruit, so I was excited to see she is making 2 different buds, that's how I got here to see your nice video 😍
How did they turn out? Did you ever get around to doing a followup video?
I left them outside in the winter and they all died, unfortunately. So that was a learning experience for sure
@@captiveroots3037 oof! Do you have an idea of what happened? Do you think it got too cold or perhaps did they dry out?
@@GrahamSEdwards definitely too cold... All the pots froze solid over the winter but they were definitely still moist with all the snow and the freeze/thaw cycles... It was a real bummer!
I bought 3 today. Do you support these or tie them up?
@@CalisthenicTraining I just let them sprawl for the most part, although I have seen people use metal wire to support the canes and keep them more upright
I love the taste, more sour than Aji Amarello and at the same time less spicy and not so tropical smell than Habannero .I admit that I have probably found a favorite that I would love to have fresh with a regular snack .
Can i just plant one of it or no?
You'll need at least two different varieties for pollination but you could plant 2 in 1 hole if space is an issue
what planting distance do you recommend?
I put them in clumps about a foot apart to begin with, but pretty soon after they become a giant mass of plants and fill the entire area in. It doesn't affect productivity to crowd these. In fact they produce like crazy!
@@captiveroots3037 Good to know. I'm ordering 3 fall gold raspberries tomoorow :)

My absolute favourite type of raspberry so sweet
I live in toronto im wondering if i can keep my fig tree in the basement cold room in complete darkness for the winter ?
@@byzon123 probably would be perfect depending on how cold it gets. Our root cellar room gets down to the low 40s and it's perfect
@@captiveroots3037 doesn’t get no where near freezing just stays cool all winter And being in complete darkest wont harm it ? Thanks for you reply
@byzon123 complete darkness is fine, because it will drop all of its leaves during winter. That sounds like a perfect spot for it! Cool is good so that it doesn't wake up early and start to leaf out in the dark. That's no good but only happens if it's too warm in late winter/early spring
I think grow lights are typically only needed if you're solely growing indoors. That 6000k natural white shop LED is great for vegetative growth not so much for flowering. I only grow seedlings indoors to protect them from pests then they go outdoors. I don't need the red spectrum.
I'm trying to develop a new pawpaw variety with superior fruit. How many pawpaw seedlings, do you suppose, are needed before I have a 50% chance of successfully developing a new variety with superior fruit? 100 seedlings, 1000, 10k, or more? I'm starting with seeds that were cross pollinated from cultivars with superior fruit themselves in an attempt to help the odds.
That's a great question! To be honest I'm not sure because most of our trees are grafted, but all of the fruit I've purchased from people growing select seedlings has been pretty good. I would say you have a much better chance with pawpaw than something like apples, where there's so much variance from the parent plant
@@captiveroots3037 thanks so much:)
