    Good morning from central Georgia! 35° down here this morning so an appropriate video to start the day. I would DEFINITELY watch the Indy Farm Yule Log!

    When I was a kid, I remember double barreled wood stoves exploding in popularity across Idaho in the seventies. I still use one today. On the 11th burning season of mine now. Best way to run 'em is get rid of the little damper they come with. Mount a barometric damper right out the top of the barrel, especially if you got a long chimney runout.
    I use an outside air kit with mine, which is a 3" pipe running from outside to right above the feed door. I use a bit of folded sheet metal that widens out to a slit about an inch across and as wide as the feed door. This way you aren't running your chimney like a vacuum, sucking cold air into every gap in your building and dropping efficency. You are feeding cold air directly to your stove and creating a smoke blocking air curtain so that when you open the stove, if she wants to smoke, it will try to get out the top of the feed door, but the cold air curtain that's feeding the stove will cause that smoke to roll back down and into the stove again. 2 for 1.
    Also, putting in 2 or 3 secondary burn air tubes near the ceiling of the barrel (like the modern high efficiency stoves) will make it much more efficient. You will burn a lot less wood and send a lot less smoke up the flue. Also, if you are set up for it, a lot of thermal mass around the stove will give off heat for hour after fire's out. I can leave mine out all night and only get a temperature drop of 10 degrees in 8 hours with temps in the mid teens outside.
    Good Journeys All

    Science, ha! You are funny! The barrel stove's what originally brought me to your channel, and I don't even remember why I thought I'd want to make a DIY one in the first place! Oh, and the yule log please, would watch that! The non-wearing of shades, though, feels like I'm watching a different person, haha.

    I just got one, for $200 -_-, and sadly when we bought it it didnt have enough piping to go past our roof. So ive been dealing with smoldering flames and a smoke filled house 🤦🏻‍♀️ we're off grid so its our only source of heat and i haven't been able to keep a licking fire, when i close the door it smolders out, and i cant open it otherwise ALL the smoke comes out and into my 29ft cabin. Its gets below °30 in ky area and i need this to work. I cant drill theough my roof yet (dont have the tools or knowlege to not ruin my home! Nor the money to pay someone educated in it to do it) so the piping goes out my window but it doesnt go past my roof which is why i feel the smoke doesnt eacape the piping nor a flame staying alight bc theres no air coming through the piping to keep the flame going, but the pipe isn't sealed. So it has to be the fact tha mypipe doesnt go past my roof right?

    You always leave the flue wide open?

    How often do you need to remove ashes

    • @IndyFarmLife
      @IndyFarmLife  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It really depends on how often you use it, but it's not an everyday thing for sure. I let mine go quite a while before emptying. I prefer to have more of a bed to help protect the steel. (in addition to the sand and fire bricks)

      @@donaldlalone7014 Yea, it helps protect the bottom. In most cases, the bottom doesn't even get very hot when a fire is going because of them/it.

    • @IndyFarmLife
      @IndyFarmLife  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Make sure you have good dry wood. A hot fire with dry wood shouldn't smoke. Also make sure your flue doesn't have any blockages. When you first start the fire, leave the front door open for a good while so that fire can build up and build a good hot coal base.
