    Watch out for scams y'all!! Don't pay anyone until you have physically seen the place

      In NY just assume that EVERY Craigslist listing is a scam. You have to reverse look up every picture, hire private detectives.

    I spent like four months looking for an apartment in Montréal online and didn’t end up finding one until I drove around for two days, called every number I saw, and finally found a great one! Wasn’t listed online and has some of the cheapest two bedroom rent I’ve seen in the city. Definitely go outside and call, best method.

    • @margaretmouka5552
      @margaretmouka5552 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Meagan Collins but i dont get it why wont they list them online?

    • @Old_meg
      @Old_meg 5 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      Margaret Mouka well like Jo mentioned some will be listed and some won’t, my apartment is owned by a company who owns dozens of buildings so they might list that they have spaces available online, but won’t put each individual apartment. Also in a city like Montréal we have a lot of older people who own buildings so sometimes they just like the old fashioned way :)

      I am from a landlord family, so I'll tell you why people don't list: They're old! My parents own a real estate portfolio of rental properties and they're both over 80. They only learned how to use a smart phone a few years ago. And once my mom called me up ranting about my brother because he was out of state and she needed to list her property on Craigslist. She really believed you needed to be in town to do this. So, guess what. For her, a sign on the front lawn or a flyer stapled to a kiosk at a student union is IT. Yes, it makes life inconvenient for searchers. But my mom has paid off all her properties and she still can't wrap her 80 year old mind around the crazy rental market, so her rents are dirt cheap.

    • @josheydubs
      @josheydubs 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      What city does she list her properties in? That's always a factor. Hot spots like NYC or LA are expensive because people always move there compared to cheaper cities like Chicago.

    Use those legs! You are so right! Internet searches were mostly trash when I lived in L.A. I found a beautiful 1 BR apartment just by pounding the pavement! I lived there from 2007-2015, $850 a month, and my landlord never went up on my rent! I miss that apartment sometimes! ☺️

    I found a one bedroom with parking near off of Wilton blvd close to where it runs into Beverly Blvd. It was 1400 a month! Plus I get an extra 100 off a month because I made a deal with the management company that I would sweep the hallways once a week, and mop the hallways once a month. (It's only a two story building with 9 units.) So I really only pay 1300 a month. I definitely lucked out. I was talking to a property manager at my air bnb and he showed it to me before it got listed. I've been in LA 14 months.

      Let’s grow up and please stop using the word “Gentrification” of which was made up to LITERALLY Be Even more Racist in Los Angeles if you’re CAUCASIAN-cuz Immediately You’re/I’m Judged by the color of MY SKIN- “Whitey ova der he’s rich- why he living een mi y mi amigos hood? YEA THIS IS TRUE. Warning: (AS MUCH AS I ♥️ LA) ......IF YOU’RE NOT “brown” you’ll be discriminated against alongside the blacks(African Americans) and together the whites and blacks are open targets for COMPLETE Racial Discrimination. I was born in LA - left at age 5 - came back for wonderful summers with my Croatian and Eastern European family then moved to three different cities in 3 diff states and 2 countries and when I finally came back it was so sad to be considered a “HIPSTER” -- Not cuz of my clothes I HATE HIPSTERS BUT I WAS / am considered a Hipster cuz Drumroll 🥁 PLEEEEASE! “Im -GASP- Caucasian!!! Or “White” which is (JUMP on DA BANDWAGON) SO Like, omg... Racist omg! To me now, like omg. I’m white and I LIVE IN BOYLE HEIGHTS AND IF ANYONE WANNA Hear some true disgusting DISCRIMINATION Hate speech just come to any Latino (most of LA now) neighborhood and you’ll get what I have got. But it’s MY CITY TOO. Oh and it’s AWESOME Just one last part… How are the Vikings have completely forgotten that it was us eastern European as well as the Japanese - Irish -Italians and Jews who BUILT BOYLE HEIGHTS AND LINCOLN HTS which is now 97.3% guess what…? LATIIIIINO!!!! THATS Why the homes here are lasting 120-130 years! Us Eastern European peeps build our SH@T sturdy and not like some shanty shack- therefore THE FIRST “GENTRIFICATION” was WHEN THE LATINOS PUSHED MY FOREFATHERS AND MOTHER OUT OF OUR OWN HOME HERE!!! There’s some TRUE TRUTH FOR YOU ALL! So ignorant ppl are!

    I moved to LA from London 6 months ago, because I knew I'd be looking when I arrived I checked craigslist and apartments.com EVERY day for months prior to my move so I knew the market and what was a good deal and what was coming and going from the sites. When I landed I had shortlisted two apartments that were available, saw the first one took it on the spot, I love place AND it's rent-controlled - a bit of luck but also I was well informed. Another tip is to be prepared, have a folder with everything needed, copy of ID, paystubs, reference letters etc etc, hard copy and google docs.

    Great advice Jo! There are also facebook groups where people are posting listings and sublet situations all the time, and it gives a good sense of what kind of person lived there before you or what kinds of people you might be living with. Plus sometimes building managers like when other people bring their friends in as roommates, since they feel like their current tenants can vouch for them. :)

    The rental situation is similar in Vancouver -- sometimes walking around and cold calling is the best thing you can do!
    That thing about fridges not being included is shocking, though!!! Like, how is it a complete kitchen without a fridge???

    Have you considered Midcity? It's a great area---central--and north of the 10 freeway. A lot of people are moving in. I used to live in the Miracle Mile. But it got a little too hip, hot and douchey. And the parking situation, as you probably know, is a zombie apocalypse. So, I bought a property, just a bit south of the area. Midcity lets me still be in trendy Miracle Mile and WEHO. But it also lets me be in downtown or Venice in just 20 minutes...because Washington and Adams are less used streets. Parking is pretty good and apartments tend to be bigger, with a period feel. Also, the area is mostly rent control. This is because housing stock is mostly from the 1920's. Check it out!

    Another tip is try to move during "off peak" seasons (ex. winter- people are less likely to move because it is too cold), you can usually get some kind of a move in discount or the rent is just cheaper. Also, moving companies might be a bit cheaper as well.

    Craigslist has lots of listings, but I don’t like to use them because they don’t have reviews. That’s a good way to see if a building has some kind of infestation. You can’t always tell by viewing the apartment.

    Another tip. Apartments in LA flip fast! It’s nice to look ahead of time but more often then not a month is more time then building managers care to wait to fill a space. Every apartment I’ve found in LA I literally found the week before or week of my move! No joke!
