    The relaxed tone of this really helps.
    I'm been building a rack to support 4x 20g tanks. 2 qt, 2 hospitals. So I'm researching diseases as much as I can in preparation.
    There are some scary vids/threads out there. Ich, Velvet, Brook, Flukes... I started to wonder why I'm even getting into this.
    Your video, with it's calming tone, sets me at ease.
    I would subscribe, but I already did that months ago!

    Thanks so much for this and all your awesome videos! I have known SO many people that will not quarantine anything in their (sometimes VERY expensive) tanks. I know the reason why is because they can't wait to see their new fish/coral/invert etc. in the tank. My.goodness patience is such a virtue in this hobby!

    Just a suggestion for a future video, but I think it would be kind of neat if you did a long video (like an hour long or something like that) of just a camera set up watching the full frontal view of the 400g. It would be a nice way for your viewers to be able to enjoy the tank especially if they had a smart tv or something to where they can just have it play in the background of their living room. It would be a simple video to make, and it would only just take time. Thanks for all the great videos! Can't wait to see more updates!

    I just want to point out something, when you are pulling a gallon of water out of your tank, have a couple gallons mixed up first and shut off your auto top-off. You pull a gallon or 3 out of the system with your ato going, it's going to pump 3 gallons of fresh water into your tank.

    • @melevsreef

    Another thing I would add is to have some pre-made saltwater on standby to replace what is taken out so they don't get ATO water being dumped into the tank

    • @melevsreef
      @melevsreef  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, for this process you'd need to have about 3-gallons of extra saltwater on hand to replenish the system to avoid affecting salinity of your reef.

    Great product review. I've used it once before and had no issues. Only thing that can be an issue is having to use 2 gallons of tank water every time. With your tank being as large as it is and all tied in together, not so much an issue but for someone with a smaller setup it could be more significant.

    Hi there, what about bigger fishes (palm size). How do you put them in a 'peace-maker' box? I'm asking because bigger fishes tend to get stress in confine areas where they cant swim easily. Any ideas?

    • @melevsreef
      @melevsreef  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mervyn Lau I tend to buy small fish because I love to watch them grow over time. I know one person used eggcrate (lighting diffuser) to make a big cage to hang in their tank, but the fish died anyway. I'd imagine the white cage stressed the fish out, but that's merely a guess. A bigger peacemaker could be a solution if the tank had the space for it.

    is this advice only for fish brought home from the store? or also for SHIPPED fish? i thought drip acclimation is bad for shipped fish?

    • @melevsreef
      @melevsreef  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can use it for all new fish arrivals, local or shipped. I always use it with every new purchase, since 2011. Drip acclimation (well, mine is more like a steady trickle) is fine if you have oxygen and heat. A small bubbling airstone and heater in the bucket will keep the water more stable. Add some Prime to that water to lock up ammonia since the pH will rise with the added oxygen.

    • @melevsreef
      @melevsreef  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      mitch stanley It won't die in the tank unless the water parameters get out of whack. But it would be wise to plan ahead for a nice upgrade. The purple tang I have was in a 280g system that I bought used, and over the past 12.5 years she has had to be moved due to tank leaks: She was in the 280g for six years, then a 100g vat for 7 months, then a 400g for a year, then a 215g for 18 months, and now back in a 400g. :) Just know that tangs love to swim and a 38g is very small. If the fish is tiny now, enjoy. But plan ahead for a 6' long tank or larger.

    my clowns recently got white chalk stuff on the side of its body and around mouth. I have watch your video do you think it will cure my fish if I catch them and put them in a quarantine tank and add safety stop. I don't want to loose them.

    • @melevsreef
      @melevsreef  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Safety Stop is a preventative to remove external parasites, not a medication/cure for fish disease. You will need to determine what your fish have, and then a suitable approach to help them recover.

      I had this fish for about 8 or 9 years. This is the first time anything has happen but here recently I bought so maroon clowns . My big female clown didn't like them she kept fighting with them. But they died . it is a white then film on her. I been treating her with garlic so maybe that will clear her up

    Should I use this for CUC or will they be fine without it to go in the main tank?? Should the CUC be put in QT after the use of this product?? I am new to this hobby so excuse me for any silly questions here.

    Hi, I have small yellow tang and blue tang coming from germany. Its about 7-9 hours for it to get delivered to me. Is it safe to open the bag up and drip acclimate? Or should i leave the bag closed get the fish up to temperature and then add them to First part? Would appreciate your input on this

    • @steez5769
      @steez5769 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would acclimate them to the temperature first In closed bag then slowly drip acclimate. Less shock means less stress.

    • @OA1998.
      @OA1998. 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@steez5769 but then the fish will be sitting in high levels of ammonia. I put a small hole in the bags just enough for the drip tube to enter and then over the course of 30 minutes i drip acclimated them checked salinity and temperature and then put them in my tank. All fish are healthy and well.

    Can it be used for fresh water?

    • @melevsreef
      @melevsreef  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. From their website: Safety Stop is a simple and effective way to help protect your Saltwater and Freshwater aquarium fish from serious unwanted disease outbreaks caused by external parasites, and bacterial and fungal infections. New fish are often the source of infectious diseases that can wipeout an entire aquarium. Be proactive and give your fish a Safety Stop bath to significantly lower the risk of introducing deadly diseases. Protect your investment!!!

    hey, i just lost all my fish to ich and was wondering if it was okay to raise the temp to 32 degrees to completly kill it would this work. AND if so, would it effect the snails and crabs i have in hte tank right now and even the good bacteria in the tank.

    • @melevsreef
      @melevsreef  9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +SaltwaterTankTv That would be nearly 90° F, which is much too hot for the main display. If you want to eliminate Ich in your display tank, leave it fallow (fishless) at least 6 weeks, if not longer. All new fish should be placed in quarantine for observation for three weeks, to make sure they are healthy. You can use Safety Stop as soon as they arrive, then move them to QT for a few weeks and train them to eat the foods you offer.

    Will this work for scaleless fish like puffers or do I need to continue with standard quarantine procedures for them? Also, if it does work for puffers, do I need to use 2 packets if I use deeper water for a larger fish? Ex 2 gallons==2 packets?

    • @melevsreef
      @melevsreef  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Skullthrax Orphan Slayer I don't know the answer to the first question. You can contact BlueLifeUSA directly on their site to confirm that query. To the second question, yes you can mix up larger batches as long as each packet is added to one gallon of water to have enough solution for larger fish baths.

      This method is what I've been using exclusively for over two years. I still like a QT, but usually I use that for new coral arrivals. I'm going to be building a new one this spring, and a new video will be released about it thereafter.
      The fact is I've done QT for most of my reefing and have lost fish in QT. I know it's the right way to go, but I've lost fish that way. I've not lost any fish using Safety Stop, nor have I seen any kind of fish disease explosion in my reef after adding new fish. Over the past year, I lost the CBB that never ate a morsel of food and I tried everything for four days. And I lost a tiny tang that got sucked up against the penductor about a month after it was in my reef. The rest of the fish that have gone through Safety Stop did well, including gobies, anthias, tangs, wrasses and clowns.
      So while it is always recommended to use QT, my results have been impressive. Most refuse to set up a QT or simply don't have the space to commit to it. They can definitely use Safety Stop and improve their luck. It's the least they can do instead of just acclimating and dropping a fish into their tank. When I saw Safety Stop in 2012 at MACNA, I was so happy to see there was finally something on the market for the majority of people that needed to do more. So this is why I put up the video, showing how easy it is.

    Will not work against ICH already attached to a fish. You don't always see ICH because it likes to go for the gills. So using this won't stop that. If you go right to your display tank after this you will still infect that tank!
