I just wanted to tell you that I am enjoying your channel and have learned a great deal from you. I enjoy tinkering with my old outboard and performing required maintenance. I will be attempting lower unit seal replacement this winter. 30 year old Johnson, original seals. Not leaking (no milky fluid in the lower unit- just think it is due because the seals I can see look dry rotted). Keep up the great work, I am sure your channel and endeavors will be successful. Paul in Pensacola, FL
Hi Keith. after seeing this fluid, mine didn't look that bad. I'm glad I found your channel. It has helped me have the confidence that I can handle regular maintenance and address problems as they show up. Pretty sure I know where mine is leaking and have the fix already. I want to get on the water this weekend with the family. Plan is to get it on the water and then check the fluid to make sure it is fixed. Otherwise, I will figure out where the leak is. I already changed the thermostats and the impeller. I was super excited to see how clean everything was when I pulled the lower unit, and the job was way easier than I expected.
Yeap, I was listening. As you guys very well said it's much easier and cheaper to find a lower unit in good shape than trying to fix one getting water and leaking oil. I guess that watching the color of the milky oil is enough to find out this big problem. Thanks for the great tip! Your videos are very valuable, Keith. Thank you very much! BTW... Let me clarify your other comment, please. I know that Ivshould send you a private email but this TH-cam channel may serve better for anyone interested in knowing what country is my country and where is located. I'm not from Brazil, which is quite a big country located in South America that used to belong to Portugal, but from a much smaller country located in Europe and named Spain. My country is located next to Portugal, France and Great Britain so you can get a better picture. My country was the one that sent the ships that discovered North America first in 1492. Spain ruled both north and south America. The north was named New Spain and the south was named Peru. Spain duscovered and rulled all the way from the Alantic to the Pacifc Oceans and all the way north to south from Alaska to southern Peru now named Argentina and Chile in the following years. The Philippines where discovered also by my country when a ship at the command of this guy named Juan Sebastián Elcano (he and most of his sailors being from my region near southern France) circunavigated the globe some 5 centuries ago finishing a terrible journey in 1522. Only 17 sailors arrived and most of them were from my region which name is Basque Region. Another reminder... Contrary to polpular believe taught in too many schools in the USA, Magallanes did not make it. He did not make the first trip around the globe. He was born in Portugal but he was already a Spaniard before he started the trip. He was sent by Spain to travel towards Asia sailing west with a good number of ships, although he did not made it back because he died before he had made less than half the trip around the globe. When I went to Texas I was shocked to find out what was taught in schools in the US erasing everything concerning my country. I wonder why the history should he erased. No wonder nobody there knows where Spain is located! Both Portugal and Spain, ruled the Americas for three to four centuries. The main coasts around the world were ruled by the king of Spain and Portugal Felipe II, who was for a few years king of England and Ireland from his marriage to the queen Mary I. This same king named in English Philip the second, his son Philip the third and grandson Philip the fourth, were kings of Spain and Portugal during eight decades in the XVI and XVII centuries, until Spain and Portugal separated again in 1668. The king Charles III of Spain (Carlos III) through this guy from my city named Gardoqui, helped George Washington in the independence of the 13 colonies. My great great grandfather, 7 generations before and named José Jaudenes working in Pensilvania for Gardoqui, helped your country in the following years. My great great grandma was his wife named Matilda Stoughton. Their beautiful portraits, painted in USA by a famous English painter, are now at this NYC museum but stayed in Spain with my family for more than a century intil sent back to the US. Let me go on... Both north and south America were ruled by Spain for more than four centuries, from thevfirst arrival in 1492 until in 1898 the U.S. declared war against Spain resulting in Spain loosing the last possessions, Cuba and Puerto Rico at the Caribbean, and the Philippines and the isles of Guam located between Hawaii and the Philippines in the Pacifc. Spain started loosing the rule of the lands west from the Mississippi river given from Spain to France which in turn sold them to the USA for peanuts, when Napoleon took charge of Spain and Portugal from 1808 to 1812. Spain lost most north and south America provinces between 1808 starting with the Napoleonic wars to 1898 in the war against USA.

@@OutboardDad Thanks a lot for your kind words, Keith. Since I retired I've been getting a lot of interest about all kind of subjects that I didn't care about when I was concentrated in my job. I have learnt many things that I had no idea about but I find myself more ignorant the more I learn because everything is too complex as soon as I scratch the surface of the subjects. I also have found out that many things that I was taught either at school when I was a child or at the university were wrong. It seems to me that I have been fooled on purpose and now I try to think by myself like I did when when I was very little before I started being "educated". Going back to our beloved outboard I must tell you that yesterday I spent more than six hours working with my four Mercury 5hp engines non stop. I had to clean carburators, tanks, on/off switch and hoses because all four motors tend to quit working anytime from a few minutes to a couple of hours after cleaning both main jets and slow speed jets. I arrived to the conclusion that the gasolines that we have here in Europe containing up to 10% of ethanol and 3% of methanol is very harmful for these small engines. I'm now thinking about removing all alcohol from my gasoline. Alcohol turns into vinegar developing aceto bachteria after exactly what happens if you leave opened for a couple of weeks any bottle of wine, which has the same proportion of ethanol than our "new" ecological gasolines. My plan is to add plenty of water, let's say 10% of water, and let the alcohol be mixed with the water because alcohol is avid for water. The next step is taking only the gasoline and discharging the water and alcohol mixture. I've found out that alcohol has much less calorific power than gasoline but adds octane rating to the gasoline now that lead tetra etil is firbidden in Europe for other uses than an airplane. I had bought an additive for fuel that is supposed to fight the fungus and bacteria growing but it didn't work. Next step is buy 5 liters of gasoline add 0.5 liters of plain water mix everything and let it rest for one day or three until I see that I have 1 liter of clear water plus alcohol at the bottom and 4.5 liters of blue gasoline on top. This way my fuel would be only 10% more expensive but alcohol free. Do you fancy the experiment?
@@OutboardDad Two days ago I cleaned 4 carburators, tanks, on/off switch and hoses, and all 4 motors were runing fine. One of them failed shortly afterwards and I had to clean the jets one more time. Today I went to check them again and all of them are running alright. I have decided to use only gasoline without alcohol from now on. Mercury says not to use gasoline with alcohol and in case of having no other option to remove all gasoline after using the outboard. There is no gasoline without alcohol available in my country, except for small aircrafts, so I will need to remove the alcohol mixed with the fuel. I bought 5 liters of colored in blue gasoline, with 98 octane rating, and added 0.5 liters of water. Now I have 5.5 liters of gasoline plus water. The idea is that the alcohol will abandon the gasoline and become mixed with the water because it is well known that alcohol is always "thirsty" or avid for water. I hope to be able to remove 1 full liter of transparent liquid (0.5 liters of alcohol and 0.5 liters of the added water) in a couple of days. The rest should be 4.5 liters of blue gasoline without alcohol, with a bit more caloric power and a bit less octane rating than before. Fingers crossed!
