  • The Nintendo Switch OLED Model is here. And I've spent the past four days with one and have really put it to the test. Here is a no nonsense review of the OLED Switch - my thoughts, and whether you should consider upgrading to one if you already own a Switch. Is it really worth $350 ? Were mistakes made? Please Enjoy!

USB 2.0 limit is 480 Mega **BITS** per second, once you discount framing and packetization overloads, it's more like 48-50 Mega **BYTES** per second, on top of that you'll have "losses" when wrapping the ethernet packets, that will introduce their own overheads (control fields and so)... . Great channel, keep on it.

    • @TheGodOfAllThatWas

Ok... Sure... But he consistently said bytes when he meant bits. The speeds on screen are labeled Mbps so that's supposed to be bits and he said bytes, and he mentioned his internet speed is 1000 Mega Bytes but I don't think anyone offers that as an option, I'm pretty sure he means 1000 Mbps, and yes he said 480 Mega Bytes and meant Mega bits.

There's really no point here other than a correction, as the speeds given in the speed test are in megabits, not bytes like you say. So 70 odd megabits per second. In his narration he basically called it all bytes, but it makes no difference here to the message unless it was in fact 70 megabytes.

to me its not worth it at all if you already have a switch, the panel might have nice colors but its pixel layout is different and it has less subpixels so its technically less resolution than the old ones, so its an upgrade in color but a downgrade in clarity. Not worth any amount of money if you ask me. The kickstand is the only thing going for it atm. It would be much better to wait another 2 years until they are forced to released an upgraded revision due to new games not being capable of running on the current hardware.

what you're arguing is that a minor upgrade to what's supposed to be half of your switch experience justifies buying an entirely new version, despite there being no overclock/higher clock on any of the hardware, or any changes to the hardware period apart from 64GB of base storage. it's quite weak an argument and i personally don't think that it's justified paying $50 more than the og RRP lmao

Quite frankly, as much as an OLED screen is much better, I don't think it's worth it.
If you don't have a Switch yet, I still think it's better to pay cheaper on Lite (if you play first in portable mode) or on the normal model since there is no difference in games and the hardware is exactly the same.
If you already have a Switch, would you really pay $350 for a model that has exactly the same hardware as the console you already own? (And worse, if you play first in the dock you won't have any difference and if you play first in portable mode, it's no longer worth getting a Switch Lite which is cheaper and more ''portable'' since it's smaller and easier to take anywhere and have a d-pad ? ), in my opinion it's even more worthwhile to buy a Steam Deck since it's only $50 more and besides having a much more powerful hardware, it's capable of running games that the Switch doesn't can rotate. ( Aside from some games that run at 30fps on Switch that can be played at 60fps on Steam Deck like Doom Eternal not to mention games that run on Cloud on Switch but natively on Steam Deck like Control )

    • @guspaz
      @guspaz 2 ปีที่แล้ว +37

Impossible. USB-C HDMI alternate mode uses up all the USB3 pins, leaving only the USB2 ones. You simply can't do HDMI and USB3 over a USB-C cable at the same time. Not without workarounds, anyhow. They could switch to USB-C DisplayPort alt mode, since that supports using less pins if less bandwidth is required, and you can do up to 4K60 with only half the pins, leaving enough pins for full USB3 speeds. However, they would then need a DP-to-HDMI converter in the dock, increasing costs. Thunderbolt would be another workaround, but isn't practical at these pricepoints.
All that said, nothing stops them from delivering at least ~300 Mbps speeds over USB2.

Imagine how much Sony regrets not putting a little more effort i getting the Vita right, thy were a nat's hair away from getting it right, all they needed was a normal SD card slot, more first party games, I mean they have so much choice in that area, think of all the PS2 ports that would have played and look amazing on the PSV OLED screen, Dark Cloud 1&2 Vita edition anyone, not to mention ICO, Shadow of the Colossus, the Silent Hill games, a Resident
Evil games Vita collection, a GTA pack consisting of GTA 3/VC/SA would have sold like hot cakes not to mention millions of Vita's (now the NS has the tipple GTA pack coming, you watch how many it sells, mark my words, it will sell silly amounts not to mention millions of Switches just for that release), point is there was so much low-hanging fruit they could have easily ported to the Vita to sell consoles by the bucket load, not to mention all those IPs they could make new handheld orientated content for, I even heard rumours of Dreamcast games coming to the Vita, which would have been amazing, especially at the time, so much missed potential with the Vita. Still at least we have it now with CFW, thanks to having a native PS1 and PSP CPU it's perfect for playing PS1 and PSP games, especially on the OLED, you can have your whole PS1 library on the Vita, plus so many amazing PSP games in 2X native resolution, like Vice City and Liberty City Stories, both amazing games that look incredible on the OLED screen, the Vita even has a really good version of RetroArch, opening up thousands of classics that look amazing, again thanks to the OLED.
I wouldn't be surprised if Sony had another crack at it, releasing a PS4 level handheld, with the capability of playing most of its legacy library from PS1/2/3/4, as well as handheld versions of it's latest AAA titles, now that would sell gang busters if it was sone properly, remoteplay with PS5 would be amazing, another amazing feature of the VITA, that is RP with the PS4, it may have had it's control quirks, but playing the Last of us on the Vita was awsome back in the day.

@@Wobble2007 Sony did a horrible job supporting the Vita with first party titles. It was a good JRPG machine but not much else. In the long run it worked out for the best since they put everything into the PS4.
Count on the next major Switch update, whenever it happens, to bring performance up to the PS4 level. This is reasonable given where Apple SoCs already were back in 2018 and that Nvidia will be able to make something at least as performant with a cut down Orin SoC.

@@KoolAidManOG Given that the current NS is already pretty close to a base XB1/PS4, especially in docked mode, the NV Tegra X1 was and still is no slouch, it is a full fat Maxwell GPU with 256 cores don't forget, the next NS will quite likely use the latest Nvidia Tegra based SoC, which uses an Ampere or the Ampere-Next based GPU with 2048 CUDA or more cores, meaning the Switch2 will be far more capable than even the PS4 Pro, obviously it won't be in PS5 territory, but it will be capable of 4K for one thing, in docked mode that is, I'd imagine Nintendo will approach the Switch 2 slightly differently though, separating the specs between the dock and console, I.E having a second GPU in the dock capable of 4K, perhaps some type of custom SLI chip with DLSS capability to help out pushing 4K @ a stable 60 FPS, could also just be they design the dock similarly to a USB-C external GPU, putting a Tegra with fewer cores and RAM in the handheld console, and one with many more cores and RAM in the dock. This way they can also offer a cheaper Switch 2 Lite sans the dock. Who knows though really, it's just speculation, but fun to ponder.

@@Wobble2007 Nintendo won't do such thing. Why? Because of the cost of the hardware and all the technical hurdles they would need to jump. Nintendo is very cost-aware company. Today's level of performance for handheld systems that is at reasonable cost is something like Steam Deck which is what I would call "pretty close to PS4". In 2-3 years it might double and of course if they stick with NV then DLSS would be used extensively on such system so we might actually see quite high resolutions on such console. Given Nintendo cost-awareness I would rather expect them to make 1080p handheld, 1440p tops, give it ~2TFLOPs and call it a day. Why? No competition and no need to make it any faster.

Nice breakdown of the OLED model. I have no plans to get one at this time. My 1st gen switch is just fine. The screen burn in is something that is a concern as I use mine 98% in handheld and have tons of hours over the 3.5+ years now that I have had it. I’ll be watching for any burn in reports down the road. Zero issues with burn in for a regular IPS type LCD panel. I’ve been very happy with the switch over all and is my only gaming system. Sure I’ve replaced the battery after about 2 year but also redid the thermal paste while it was apart with arctic silver 5. Have a 1TB micro sd card. Both analog sticks have been replaced and also have clear joy con shells with a D-pad now on the left one instead of buttons. Yes Nintendo people do want a D-pad left joy con! The mini dock for the stock dock guts, also much easier to take with you vs the huge hunk of plastic that is the stock dock. My AC adapter went bad but a cheap replacement fix. I’m happy with the switch. Sure Xbox X/S or PS 5 power would be awesome! but not realistic for ~$300 system. They do exist but are in the $2.5K+ range, with like 30 minutes of battery life at 100% graphics. Overall I’m quite happy Nintendo 👍

I play equally on tv and in handheld. I really appreciate the sleeker design, it feels less like a flimsy toy now. People are viewing it like a $350 upgrade but it was never meant for current switch owners to buy as a replacement, same way as when they released the xbox one S or ps4 slim you aren't meant to view the smaller form factor as a $300 upgrade. It's a $50 upgrade for people already in the market for a switch, and atleast for me, the better screen size and quality along with the increased memory is worth that alone. The more robust and sleeker dock+switch cases and the increased battery life over my launch switch are nice bonuses.

Having purchased one on launch day, it's honestly a really nice system. Internals aside, almost everything has been upgraded, and playing games in handheld mode look amazing. Basically, like every reviewer that went out and bought 4 of these on launch day has said, if you have a regular switch that's still functioning perfectly, or even a switch lite, there's really no need to upgrade to the OLED model.
If you DON'T have a switch or switch lite, and you want the docking feature, then you can either get the switch OLED, or get a regular switch if you don't really care about the upgraded screen and put that extra $50 on a pro controller and/or some extra accessories for it. Really just depends on how much you're going to play in handheld mode, cause if you're mostly using it in docked mode, then save yourself the money and get a regular switch.
However, if you're like me, and your switch isn't doing so hot, then it could be a decent opportunity to trade your old switch in and get the OLED model. My switch's fan was sounding like an electric toothbrush after 3 years, so I either had to get a new one, or fix the fan. If you're willing to trade in your current switch for the OLED model, you'll practically be getting it for $100 after trading it in, which isn't a bad deal imo.

    • @Joshinken
      @Joshinken 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Fixing the joycon drift would be easy, and its not “improved parts”. The metal part on the back of the analog sticks slowly bends with usage, and that is the primary cause of the drift, as the components inside no longer make proper contact. The fix if you’re experiencing joycon drift is to shove a thin piece of plastic between the stick and the hull. The fix nintendo should implement is to just add a bit more plastic to tbe mould, though i suspect they would have problems in assembly due to low tolerances.
The only way better parts can fix joycon drift is if they seriously increase the thickness of metal plate on the analog sticks, for which there isn’t enough room inside the joycons.

When I got the OLED I hadn't intended to, my original due to bad design on nvidia/nintendo part heat (it has been in the open, not in a cabinet) created the typical nvidia shield tablet corner/heat vent cracks, and I was starting to hit a rate where I knew it I was going to have issues. I grabbed the OLED, transferred my account, and when I had the chance before selling the tablet piece alone to a friend as he wanted to work on it, I compared things as you did. Sure the OLED pops, that stand is as every bit as amazing as you said too, it's a nice premium solid device... but what caught me as much as the screen, the SOUND. Those are not only improved quality speakers, but improved quality placement (direction) of them too. Side by side I fired up the same came and wow, the old Switch oddly sounded muffled compared with the smaller earlier downward facing speakers. The larger ones, maybe better quality(?) but facing forward made the audio cleaner, clearer, and louder, it was a huge difference. If you're someone to play this in hand or on stand, you will notice and largely appreciate the enhanced quality.

Ultimately I might off a few bucks and it's really $15 total. But I can assure you, your not paying for $50 with of "upgrades". Seeing how the LCD systems are flying off the shelf at $300. I can guarantee you if they priced this "new" system at $300 they would still be making a profit... But why do that when they have people willing to spend another $350 for the same tech.
The only thing that's "full of bullshit" is your financial skills if you ask me, if you want to buy a polished turd by all means I won't stop you, bc that's exactly what Nintendo is trying to sell you.

@@Andy-hi9do of course production wise is gonna be cheaper. everybody knows that companies don’t spent shit on selling expensive things. but the only fair way possible to see upgrades in their production cost prices is when you’re the one implementing the upgrades. of course the technology is going to be cheaper for nintendo, but average people is not going to buy an oled screen and better joysticks to replace them themselves. maybe you have experience on modding or building things from scratch, but average switch users are not going to upgrade their switches themselves to an oled even if nintendo sell the parts at a low production price. maybe you and me yes idk, i’ve nodded consoles before and for what i’m
reading maybe you too, but for the physical quality of life upgrades like, not having to buy an extra sd card in some cases, or not having to buy a damn lan adapter, not having to buy some case with a better kickstand cuz the og switch one sucks, and sorry if i’m repeating but these accessories are not easily available at a bulk/cheap price. this switch is clearly a move to give the people who don’t own a switch the chance of a better switch at a not so of a bs price

As long as people buy it there is no reason for Nintendo to lower the prices. If you ask me, I wouldn't pay more than $150 for the hardware.
However, what people tend to forget is that Nintendo isn't a charity, even when they market themself as the "good child friendly console" compared to Sony and Microsoft.

The price depends on the demand and not the sum of components.
For example even if they sell Metroid Dread at $100 the demand would still be high.
It's the power of the brand over a consumer self-respect.

Supply and demand. The Switch has sold almost 90 million units and the OLED is going to get it over 100 million.

@@user-dm9fx9qn8c because some consumers have self-respect and different tastes in games thus different opinion ))) But the power of Nintendo brand is still high they could sell their Switch at the price of the top iPhone and most consumers would defend that decision.

I've had some issues with my joy cons (Red/Blue version of the OLED) have an instance where the thumbstick wouldn't move over to make a selection, and also seemed to have connectivity issue when changing the set up. Had a notice pop up to change the grip order. Have them out for repair. Hopefully fixes the issues.
