I prefer Harris too, he was more calm and polite, just like Dumbledore is supposed to be. But I have to say that the first time I saw Gambon, in the role, I didn't realize he was a different actor, since I didn't knew about Harris' death.
when you hire a famous tattoo artist, do you tell them what to do? Or do you foolishly trust them to make all the right decisions? This is why Gamdon could've been better, why Game of Thrones fell off in later seasons, why The Hobbit wasn't as good as LOTR -- as people ride on the coattails of their prior successes, no one is brave enough to distrust the quality of their work.
@@TT-rq3so but the director really does set the mood of a scene. Mike Newell, the director of goblet of fire was honestly miscast as a director. He directed Gambon to play the character this way because it fit HIS interpretation of the story. And I'm sure there was push back from Michael Gambon and all involved, but they had to pick their battles. Because Mike Newell wanted the dragon to burn down the forbidden forest.
RIP Richard Harris (October 1, 1930 - October 25, 2002), aged 72 And RIP Sir Michael Gambon (October 19, 1940 - September 27, 2023), aged 82 You both will be remembered as legends.
Richard Harris was a legend. He played Dumbledore’s character EXACTLY as it was described in the book and almost as if JK Rowling had Harris in mind when she sketched the character. His rendition was more Wise, calm, peaceful, smooth gentle and soft spoken compared to his replacement. It’s sad that he couldn’t play the role till the end Of the franchise.
Only good fight in the series. Where they actually feel like they are using a variety of crazy spells. All other fights are basically red bolts vs green bolts
@@michaelbarger3665FINALLY someone said it. Richard Harris as Dumbledore is so much of a perfect cast, most people can't possibly imagine. He. Is. Magnificent. Anyone who claims otherwise has no idea about not just the franchise but the art of cinema itself
They seemed like two sides to the same coin that is Dumbledore. But we only see Michael's side because we see it through Harry's eyes, and by the third book/movie Harry is closer and more important to Dumbledore than any other student.
i actually think they both suited the intensity of the films they each acted in. harries played dumbledore as a cuddly and warm old man, just like harry saw him as a younger boy. when the story progresses and subsequently gets much darker and grown up and we find out more about dumbledore’s sad and sometimes questionable past, ours, as well as harry’s, perception of him changes. along with harry we realize that he’s just a man who’s trying his very best, and not this perfect, otherwordly being. michael gambon’s much harsher portrayal fits this new dumbledore who’s no longer just a cozy magic santa claus. that being said, i do agree that richard harries was perfectly cast looks wise since he literally looks just like dumbledore is described in the books!
I liked both. Harris portrayed the calm and wise grandpa figure that Harry relied to as a young, enthousiastic boy as he was when entering Hogwarts But Gambon put energy and life into this figure and portrayed him a bit more like a tragic figure, his masterpiece being the ending of Half-Blood Prince
Yeah, maybe, but in the books, Dumbledore remained the same character with the same characteristics , even if the plot got tougher. I would have loved to see Harris' interpretation of Dumbledore on HBP
Exactly, it may be only my impression but Dumbledore started to have a bigger role from the third film until the HBP. I just can't see Harris portraying in these movies cause he was already pretty old and didn't have the energy required to be Dumbledore... just my opinion
Richard Harris had the character and cadence of Dumbledore's voice. He always sounds as if he came right off the page, as if JK Rowling had him in mind when writing the part. Additionally, no one, but he, can go from gentle, and soft, to SILENCE! with such unforgettable tenor.
Yes I agree, he was the better actor for an exciting movie. However, I think that very fact made Harris a better Dumbledore, but maybe a less exciting actor.
Harris portrayed the dumbledore you would imagine in the books. Soft, quiet, calm and tender. In my honest opinion, he was a little slow moving to portray “one of the greatest wizards of all” Richard Harris wouldn’t have been the same to watch in the battles, or physical scenes such as horcrux hunting. They both mean a lot to me in the Harry Potter world, and they both had their own unique talents that made them both great in their own ways. If you could take the best from both actors and make one... oh lawd
I'd have loved to have seen Richard Harris as Dumbledore in the sequels especially in the duel against Voldemort just because I think it'd be very interesting to see the difference. Of course we cant know how the Character would have developed with Harris as the Actor but it would be interesting nonetheless.
I think Richard Harris was the ultimate Dumbledore. He really embodied wise and kind while at the same time radiating power. And his beard/hair was legendary. Gambon really improved as the films went on, maybe except in the Goblet of Fire, but that was on the director. His performances in Order, Half and both Deathly Hallows films were excellent.
Harris portrayed Dumbledore from the books very well but we can't deny, Gambon's Dumbledore portrayal in the movies got style ;) (I can't imagine Harris duelling Voldemort with the same intensity as Gambon in OOTP movie)
I don’t know how people didn’t notice the change. The moment I saw the new Dumbledore, I noticed the difference immediately. Completely different vibes. First actor was more soft spoken while the newer one was a little more energetic. Plus they look different lol
Right so many people saying they didnt notice until seeing richard harris death in the news, i noticed in the first scene with dumbledore in prisoner of azkaban it was different. richard harris was much more similar to the novel portrayal of dumbledore and michael gambon was more aggressive and energetic, but both did good!
Dumbledore in the books was always calm in every situation, he never raised his voice or panicked even when everything was seemingly going wrong, Harris portrays this perfectly however Gambon's version of the character is less reassuring.
I 100% prefer Richard Harris but it's not like Gambon is bad but Richard Harris just had the essence of the charachter more even for only 2 movies. I really wished Richard had been here for the whole series as it would have been amazing to see his version get serious in OOTP :O
I dont think that Harris would have been able for the action scenes with Dumbledore in the later movies. And Harris Dumbledore doesnt strike me to be one to duel with anyone while Gambdon really stole the role and made him come to life more.. Harris gets the thumbs up for the look and similarity to the book. But gambdon gets the thumps up for making this character more interesting and unpredictable. Both amazing actors. And both give great versions of a huge character
Considering the situation he was in, I thought Gambon did a good job replacing Harris. Even though Harris was more accurate, I admire Gambon for putting his own spin to the role instead of trying to copy Harris.
@@JeanDeLaCroix_ it matters what was on the script. If the actors wanted their own way, the movies would be 5-6 hours long, to cope with all the points books had, even I hate there were so many scenes cut, but they did add some boring parts, replacing. And I wouldn't mind 8 hrs!
@@ahmedayaat2727 I'm not talking about that, I'm talking about the fact that Dumbledore's character is neither consistent with Harris' version nor with the version in the books, Gambon is extremely aggressive and contrasts with the calm and collected character in Rowling's book
Gambon was supposed to play a damn character that was already written in books. He’s not supposed to put his own damn spin on. He’s supposed to play a character. He ruined the character.
I don’t blame Gambon for being so harsh in the movie like I’m that scene in the Goblet of fire. That wasn’t his choice. He was most likely instructed by the producer to be harsh. I think Gambon is the best Dumbledore.
The blame goes both sides but I would put more blame towards Michael Gambon because he actually did not read any of the books. To me, that seems really lazy. A lot of the actors in Game of Thrones had read the books to get into character and match the personality. The only person that did not read the book surprisingly and I have a hard time believing it, was Peter Dinklage.
@@kgunitkeese17 he acted as the scripts had instructed him to act. The film's plots differ a bit from the books cuz u cant cram a huge book into a two hour movie. He had no choice but to act as he was directed and as how it is stated in the plot. And im pretty sure the cast had read the HP series before doing the movies, thats sort of the norm of the actors who take upon movies influenced by a book.
@@catguy4996 even if he had not read the books, he had acted as instructed by the scripts and as directed by the directors. I think he did a great job, he brought out the strong fierce element of dumboldore. Yeah, where the book states him to be calm, he was not but its not his fault its the fault of the script writers. His calm element can also be seen in many scenes, such as right before he died etc.
I know I'm late but it was Gambon who insisted to the director that they give him freedom (as if he knew the character of Dumbledore very well) and that they allowed him to play some scenes as he wanted. I'm not saying I prefer Harris either. I honestly can't choose between the two. Harris seems calm and kind like Dumbledore should be but he doesn't seem very powerful. I really can't see Harris doing better that Gambon in some of the action scenes like that duel with Voldemort in OoTP.
Honestly i liked Gambon more as Dumbledore, he just seemed more badass and i loved his performance especially in HBP and DH Part 2. They both are wonderful actors though!
Now come on! Obviously he made Dumbledore more badass...just look at the material he was acting out! Dumbledore becomes absurdly more badass in the 4-6th movies (and books)
But dumbledore was not the baddass, aggressive person! He was calm and gentle and only showed how powerful he was when it was needed. Not by knocking out Harry when he could just ask the question calmly and simply.
@@arpitaghosh-mitra2341 I liked the scene you refer to. I can't believe in a man who is always calm and gentle. The actor or director wanted to show (unlike the book, obviously, but thanks god they have artistic liberty in the movies) he was scared for Harry and worried in general when he asked for the goblet of fire. The whole performance of Gambon, bringing agitation and anxiety in his character makes Dumbledore more moving and admirable smh. Even wise and powerfull men have weaknesses especially when they get old. He made the character credible in my imagination. But ofc if you seek in the movies a very faithful adaptation of the book I understand this scene in particular and the whole Gambon's performance was disturbing
I definitely preferred Richard Harris over Michael Gambon. I thought that both did a good job, but Harris's portrayal of Dumbledore was how I envisioned the character from the books.
Richard Harris forever! I remember a Gambon's interview where he stated that he had never read a single page of Rowling's books nor meant to do it later on. This is why he has literally nothing to do with the Dumbledore of the books. Harris, like Gambon, didn't like that role, nevertheless he read the books, that's why he is so close to Rowling's character. I can't help wondering how beautiful the following films would have been with Richard Harris.
@@lydiasulovska I agree, and I find it very unprofessional not to read about your character. I think that should be the first step before starting filming; besides, all the other members of the cast learned how to play their role through the books.
Well, just my opinion....I think it's alright to not read the character you will be playing since the directors will be the one to manage each of every actor's role....just my opinion tho
I like both, but Richard Harris, at least to me, was exactly how I envisioned Dumbledore in the books; a wise, soft-spoken man with great power that could be used if necessary.
Agree 100% first Dumbledore was more calm, humble, and appeared more calculated. Also looked a little more like Dumbledore from the books. The voices were a big difference also. Sad the 2nd Dumbledore passed though, praying they both are in Heaven 🙌🏾
Harris is honestly the most underrated Harry Potter actor ever. Everyone talks about the trio, Maggie Smith and Alan Rickman but everyone just forgets about Richard Harris in the first two movies. He perfectly managed to bring the Dumbledore from the book into the big screen and he really gives you this calm and relaxing vibe. We got to thank his granddaughter for forcing him in. I really like Michael Gambon as well. I especially loved his performance in Half-Blood Prince and Deathly Hallows: Part 2 but Harris is Dumbledore.
You refrence the book, but have you actually read them? In the goblet of fire after cedric is killed and Harry escapes back to hogwarts he is lifted onto hos feet by a pair of strong arms and is amazed when he realizes its Dumbledore! And in the half blood prince Dumbledore jumps into water and swims with a «perfect breast stroke»! And more times than two! The line «with the agility of a much younger man» is used to describe Dumbledore! Gambon embodied Dumbledores physical attributes! Harris was way to frail and weak! You called Harris Kind and gentle! I agree, but can you imagine him «white- faced and furious» As he is described in the books when he stuns Barty Crouch jr or when he enters the fight in the ministry of magic Gambon was definetly my favorite Dumbledore!
Richards Dumbledore was more fitting to me, I’m not bashing Michel Gambon at all, but Gambon didn’t really fit as Dumbledore. 10 minutes into the 3rd film, and I was missing Harris already
same feeling here, it was so obvious i remembered looking up why he wasn’t in 3rd film when i was 12 and he had passed away. very sad because he was so epic in The Count of Monte Cristo as well, these youngsters don’t understand acting skills and probably have never even seen the movies harris has been in. total legend
True, but we never got to see Harris do anything because Dumbledore doesn’t do anything until the goblet of fire anyways, but the issue for me with Gambon was that it diluted the scenes where he was actually angry by coming off that way throughout the film. Not all Gambon’s fault of course, some blame also has to go to the director.
@@ajax201000 Well yes, that's what I said. Gambon was indeed very good in the Half blood Prince, however that scene where he asked Harry about his relationships was completely ridiculous.
@@markwhitaker574 I Know what you mean. But I think this harsher style goes hand in hand with the movie style of the HP series that gets darker by each film. And Dumbledore plays a more important role with each movie.
"Happiness can be found even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light" - Albus Dumbledore🕯️✨ Rest in peace Sir Michael Gambon, you'll be dearly remembered ❤😢
The thing is, they played two very different versions of dumbeldore and (in my opinion) were both perfect fit for the version they played. I can't imagine Harris's Dumbeldore doing cool spells fighting Voldemort in "Order of the Pheonix", and I can't imagine Gambon's Dumbeldore explaining to Harry what happened with Quirrl and Flamel at the end of "The Philosopher's Stone". So can you even compare them? They were both good in their own ways.
Harris had that air of infinite wisdom about him and the discreet, twinkle in his eye, which is why I prefered him. Gambon brought the quirkiness of Dumbledore to life a bit better though and he definitely grew into the role towards the end.
Richard Harris really brings a lot of warmth to that role. It would've fit so well because Rita Skeeter's revelations later on would've been a devastating shock. RIP, he'll always be my Dumbledore.
I just found out that it is two different Dumbledores and I am chocked. I do prefer Harris as Dumbledore because it feels like he is very similar to the book Dumbledore but Gambon also gives out the “vibes” of Dumbledore but I would say that he is a little bit too loud because -Book Dumbledore “Did you put the name in the Goblet of Fire?” Dumbledore asked CALMLY” Movie Dumbledore - “DID YOU PUT YOuR NAME IN THE GOBLeT OF FIRE????!!!!!! I love them both though !! They are both the real Dumbledore💗 Wands up for Richard Harris /* 🪄🪄🪄🪄🪄🪄🪄🪄🪄
I always thought that dumbeldore became different in the third movie his hair his nose his voice and he was jumping around not like an old man🤣🤣🤣🤣but I was little to understand so I didn’t know they changed the character and still watched the movie without care🥺 R.I.P Harriss
When i watched the film before i read the book, I always pictured Harris as Dumbledore it was hard not to, he had that wise gentle calming presence about him and after that i just imagined Gambon in the fight scenes but with Harriss look and still having that wise calm presence when talking to harry and others, R.I.P Harris i still liked your performance as Dumbledore in the first harry potter movies and i will always picture you as Dumbledore in harry potter books even the fantastic beasts books
Harris is my favorite because he gives me the warm fuzzy magical feel of a fatherly wizard. His eyes sold love and mystery. Gambon, while a great actor, was a bit too harsh of a character for my liking for the portrayal of Dumbledore. Although this may have been his instructions to have his character be this way. I just felt all the whimsical majestic draw from Harris become cold and distant with Gambon. Like he went from Santa to Jack Frost. Each time I think of Dumbledore I remember the ear wax moment of fun and folly with warm humor. The twinkle in his eye bought my heart! And Harris lives in my heart and mind when I read the books as forever my Dumbledore!
My head canon, after the diary being unleashed in the second movie. Dumbledore started his quest to find the other Horcrux earlier than he did in the books. Hence why he become more crazy and unkempt.
I totally agree with you on this. I was so sad when I heard that Richard Harris died and disappointed when I saw Michael Gambon as his replacement. It took me another three movies in the series to get used to him. At the end I found Mr Gambon more than satisfactory Dumbledore and now I think that he was pretty much as good as Richard Harris was in the first two HP movies.
I like Gambon a bit better. Harris was maybe a bit too nice; there is no darkness in his portrayal of Dumbledore. But there is clearly darkness in Dumbledore’s past and some serious regrets too. I think the more troubled-aspect of Dumbledore is very well captured by Gambon.
I prefer Michael Gambon over Harris. Dumbledore is supposed to be polite and kind. But, he never seemed like the best wizard like Dumbledore. I could not imagine Harris facing Voldemort in the ministry of magic.
Agree. Harris’s Dumbledore is far more warm and wisely portrayed. I would have loved to see HIM battle Voldemort. Not to mention the touching scene at the end of book 5 in Dumbledore’s office was horribly UNTOUCHING in the film. A completely WASTED opportunity for building Harry’s deep bond with Dumbledore and for the actors to really stretch their acting wings.
Something I’m surprised more people don’t point out is the scene in Chamber of Secrets where Dumbledore warns Harry and Ron he’ll expel them if they break the law again (in the movie, this line was given to McGonagall). In my opinion, this shows that they were already shying away from portraying Dumbledore’s tough side with Richard Harris. Which is sad, because I personally think he was more capable than people give him credit for. As for people who say they can’t picture Harris doing some of the later iconic Dumbledore scenes, that’s what makes his character so compelling in the books, he can go from his calm demeanor to fierce out of nowhere when the situation is dire. However, I never understood why they had to completely change Dumbledore’s look and wardrobe when the role was recast-I feel they could have made Gambon look much more like the book description if they had wanted to. All in all, I wish we had a separate reality where Richard Harris finished out the series so we could compare the two performances with certainty.
I believe that it all depends on the director of the film. Gambon was alright in the third film but there was so much screaming in the fourth film, I dunno why the director was ok with that. Has he read the books? Dunno. Of course the actor can suggest things to the director too, but from the interviews I have watched with Gambon I found out he has not read the HP books........
Can you imagine Richard Harris fighting Voldemort in the fifth part? ( Goblet of fire) Michael Gambon is definitely more suited for dynamic moments like this.
Regardless of the one single example, Michael Gambon gave that legendary role much more justice imo. Even that one example is most likely of symptom of film making. Directors add drama in adaptations where it shouldn't be ALL the time.
If Richard Harris had made it to the fourth movie I think the "Did you put your name in the Goblet of Fire?" Scene would have been a bit more book accurate.
As a Potterhead that got into the books AFTER the movie, Gambon gives life to the role in a way the books didn't. The books kinda made Dumbledore seem like this old Merlin-esque, Gandolf-y dude. Sir Gambon's given nuances whilst playing the character really change Dumbledore into a character we end up growing personal attachment with. I don't mean to say Richard Harris' performance was poor, but to be fair he passed away before we got to witness how great he could really be on the role. R.I.P to both of these legends. My childhood, and many others wouldn't have been so delightful without you both. Also R.I.P Helen McCrory who played Narcissa Malfoy in the Harry Potter series, and Polly Gray in Peaky Blinders. With us forevermore in spirit, and cinema.
As you said, I love them both. I like Richard Harris, but since we never got to see him in the rest of the films, I don't know if he could of pulled off a darker Dumbledore. First 2 movies he played a sweet old man. Would of been hard to see him transfer to dark.
I always thought Harris was the best! I so would have wanted to see the duel between Harris' Dumbledore and Voldemort in Order of the Phoenix.. the movies totally messed that up. In the books Dumbledore was basically wiping the floor with Voldemort while in the movie they made it out as he could barely hang on.
I must say that I loved them both equally. I know the "Did you put your name in the Goblet of Fire" line was very ridiculous, but I have to believe that was a director mistake and not Gambon's fault. Also, another pet peeve of mine. Why didn't Harry just say, "Screw you guys, i'm not doin it! What were they gonna do, throw him in Azkaban?
I don't remember if it's actually stated in the book or not, but the Goblet of Fire is supposed to be this strong, magical entity and its decision is binding. I believe there would have been bad physical repercussions if Harry didn't actually take part in the tournament -- so there was indeed no other choice than to participate, even Dumbledore didn't seem to have a solution how to get out of this powerful magical contract.
Meh, I was expecting a thorough analysis, still, Harris is 1000 better than Gambon, the latter never demonstrated wisdom, calm and understanding like Harris did. When I read, I imagine him.
I always found Gabmon problematic as Dumbledore. The fact that he didn't read the books before taking on his role annoys me. Almost every actor should read the books, so that they know as much about their character as possible. Gabmon was clearly too stubborn. And Dumbledore is *not* supposed to be constantly shouting and booming, even at the students! Gabmon made Dumbledore very far out of character.
As much as I like Harris' portrayal matching the Dumbledore in the books, I don't think his portrayal would've translated as well on the big screen once the story became more hostile. I just can't imagine Harris doing that awesome dueling scene against Voldemort, nor having the aggressive energy to majestically wave the Fiendfyre against the Inferi in the cave, nor making the same stylish escape with Fawkes when the Ministry tried to take him to Azkaban. "Ah I thought we'd hit this little snag. You're under the delusionary impression that I'm going to -- what was the phrase -- come quietly? I have no intention of going to Azkaban". ** You may not like him, but you can't deny Gambon's got style!
I only watched the movies, imo if it wasnt for Dumbledores loud personality, I would not have been hooked for parts of the story. I cant imagine him being calm at all times and have stuff under control, a lot of the conflict made only worked because of his reaction in the movie.
So glad to have Harry Potter videos back. I prefer Gambon actually and I feel like Goblet of Fire movie was so far off from the book that Dumbledore’s performance didn’t make much difference
Today we morn both and one must remember to not pity the dead pity the living and above all else those who live without love. An age has closed and we must learn to live by his words
Lol. These scenes were instructed by the Director, recorded in several takes and edited to suit the Director or Producer's satisfaction..The actor can actually do the scene "calmly" if instructed.
100% agree. I was very sad to see the new Dumbledore hopping around filled with energy. When reading the books, I always pictured Dumbledore to be so old and slow that he'd doze off sometimes. The fact that he was such a powerful wizard was meant to be the ironic thing about him: just like master Yoda.
Yeah harris was perfect as dumbledore. He represented the old age and kindness widened and everything dumbledore stood for. Dumbledore is supposed to show his old age but then show he’s powerful and still able to put up a good fight.
I was shocked how much different they are in the way of portraying Dumbledor. Micheal's Dumbledor was kinda aggressive and furious whereas the real vibes of Dumbledor was only given by Richard Harris. RIP
I preferred Harris. A lot of people say he's too nice, too quiet and too frail to have played in the later movies, but I disagree. I felt his quietness, his politeness, was just quiet confidence. He's the most powerful existing wizard in the world - he has nothing to prove by being rowdy and loud. When Harris was around, I really felt that Hogwartz was safe.
I loved Harris for the first two films! He had the calm and wise old wizard nailed down! Gambon, I feel did well for the third film - bringing a kind of bumblebee attitude to the character which I liked. Who knows what Harris was doing in the fourth film, he was terrible! But he pulled it back together a bit for 5 and then really nailed the role in 6-8. I love both, but I personally think Gambon was better as he was able to display all aspects of Dumbledore: the fierce to the calm to the wise. Harris never really came across as fierce or even remotely someone who Voldemort feared. Thats just my opinion though.
I honestly agree with you. Harris really didn't pull off the more threatening aspect of Dumbledore compared to Gambon. That being said though Gambon's Dumbledore had some very unneeded angst in him. Particularly in Goblet of Fire and Order of the Phoenix
I meannnn if we're gonna make a meme out of Gambon's "Gobletta Fiyaaaa", you might as well also go after Ralph Fiennes' silly "Hwabaloo wanna banana!" when he tries to kill Harry in the forest. Voldemort is not only supposed to be portrayed as the Dark Lord, but also is an incredibly skilled wizard who would never mispronounce "Avada Kedavra" -- unless he *really* was craving bananas 😆
I do myself prefer Mr. Gambon over Mr. Harris but I do think they both played their parts well in the movies that they did appear in. One was the typical old Headmaster who was lighthearted and the other was more intense and the movies required both of them to be that way so I think it did workout. When I see Dumbledore in Crimes of Grindelwald I do see a younger Gambon there but other than that also the Dumbledore who has dueled Grindelwald and won and is known to be the greatest sorcerer, for me only Gambon is the one but a more wise, calm, collected Headmaster is definitely Richard Harris. Also in this video Dumbledore is shown to be acting not calm but that can't say Gambon didn't play his character well, perhaps it was what he was asked to do. One thing however I do not like is that in the movies Grindelwald tells Voldemort that the elder wand is with Dumbledore in his grave which according to the books didn't happen and Voldemort killed him because he refused to tell him. I don't think Grindelwald would have betrayed Dumbledore like that specially since he was older now, he had had time to think about everything and had gained more perspective. Also, the movies made Ron look like an idiot that everyone kept questioning whether Hermione should have ended up with him, when Hermione and Ron were clearly meant to be. I do love the Harry Potter movies but they could have taken a few things into consideration.
I Love Both Of them Personally but Gambon's Dumbledore was my Favorite and the One I associate Dumbledore More than Harris!!! RIP Sir Richard Harris!!!!
i think exacly the same. the first dumbledore was how he was in the books. while the new one was harsh and completely different than the actual dumbledore. thet messed up dumbledore sooo much in the movies
Harris was perfect for the younger and less troublesome films. I wonder how his character would have played amongst the darker tones?? It is perhaps slightly unfair to choose the example highlighted as an acting decision, when it was probably more likely a director's choice to emphasize the controversy, where infact a more aggressive Dumbledore alerts the audience and the character to the controversy and danger that Harry is about to face
Harris' Dumledore lacked the wittiness of Dumbledore, he was too serious. But he was better than Gambon in Goblet of Fire. But, Gambon in Half-Blood Prince and Deathly Hallows was absolutely perfect, better than Harris
Meaning no disrespect to Harris, but I thought his Dumbledore was good at being calm but not calculating. The books describe Dumbledore as having an energy to him that made Harry never think of him as an old man. I got tons of old man vibes from Harris. I never for once doubted he was a stiff breeze away from being returned to the retirement home. Gambon did convey Dumbledore's power and energy, even if he botched the calm part at times.
I just rewatched the whole mobies. That scene was controversial. But I just cannot put Harris face when Dumbledore fights Voldemort. I think Harris was very good at 1 & 2, but 3 to 7, Gambon was perfect. Both were awesome in their respective chapter.
Gambon wasn't perfect for majority of the movies imo. Not only did he add a lot of unnecessary angst to the character I'm also not keen on his clothing either. Too much grey. Prefer Harris's more colourful wizard robes in the first two movies
bro do you even know who richard harris is as an actor? you’re speaking of a legend, that would sell any scene he was in. better go watch some of Harris’ other work. you might learn something

I prefer Harris too, he was more calm and polite, just like Dumbledore is supposed to be. But I have to say that the first time I saw Gambon, in the role, I didn't realize he was a different actor, since I didn't knew about Harris' death.
Neither did I.
@@angelaherman272 so I wasn't the only one 😂 good to know
Dumbledore was witty and funny in books,Harris was cold! Not something I prefer.Plus gambon trumps over Harris with great commanding voice he has

The way Gambon acted was totally on the director. He could've acted more calmly, couldn't he?
when you hire a famous tattoo artist, do you tell them what to do?

RIP Richard Harris (October 1, 1930 - October 25, 2002), aged 72
And
RIP Sir Michael Gambon (October 19, 1940 - September 27, 2023), aged 82
You both will be remembered as legends.
Albus Dumbledore
It was always obvious to me that's why it didnt feel the same after 2 for me
Richard Harris was a legend. He played Dumbledore’s character EXACTLY as it was described in the book and almost as if JK Rowling had Harris in mind when she sketched the character. His rendition was more Wise, calm, peaceful, smooth gentle and soft spoken compared to his replacement. It’s sad that he couldn’t play the role till the end Of the franchise.
total legend, i don’t think the younger generation really realizes how good richard harris really was and how much better he was as dumbledore
nah, it was boring seeing dumbledore like that. major movie improvement with gambon
But Gambons fight with Voldemort
Only good fight in the series. Where they actually feel like they are using a variety of crazy spells. All other fights are basically red bolts vs green bolts
@@michaelbarger3665FINALLY someone said it. Richard Harris as Dumbledore is so much of a perfect cast, most people can't possibly imagine. He. Is. Magnificent. Anyone who claims otherwise has no idea about not just the franchise but the art of cinema itself
Harris is who I imagine now when reading the books, he was perfect!
He was such a sweetheart
I personally prefer Michael because he showed more flaws and it made him more realistic to me. But I do get what everyone else be sayin
Yes, same
They seemed like two sides to the same coin that is Dumbledore. But we only see Michael's side because we see it through Harry's eyes, and by the third book/movie Harry is closer and more important to Dumbledore than any other student.
I honestly prefer Gambon, felt more strong and more capable of being the badass he is supposed to be. Harris was just too... sweet.

Harris is Dumbledore. Sorry Sir Harris, you will be remembered ever so fondly for these bloody movies. And The Count of Monte Cristo.
It looks like Voldemort actually destroyed one of Dumbledore's horcrux as well.
I will always remember him as Abraham because my parents had that series growing up xD
Lol this is a little overdue, but that was a funny comment. Wonder if he kept his backup Dumbledore in a chest like Moody
Gladiator.
Unforgiven's English Bob was awesome too!!
i actually think they both suited the intensity of the films they each acted in. harries played dumbledore as a cuddly and warm old man, just like harry saw him as a younger boy. when the story progresses and subsequently gets much darker and grown up and we find out more about dumbledore’s sad and sometimes questionable past, ours, as well as harry’s, perception of him changes. along with harry we realize that he’s just a man who’s trying his very best, and not this perfect, otherwordly being. michael gambon’s much harsher portrayal fits this new dumbledore who’s no longer just a cozy magic santa claus.
that being said, i do agree that richard harries was perfectly cast looks wise since he literally looks just like dumbledore is described in the books!
Nah
You said it absolutely perfectly what I was thinking! Thank you! You’re absolutely right.
Summed up Brilliantly
I liked both.
Harris portrayed the calm and wise grandpa figure that Harry relied to as a young, enthousiastic boy as he was when entering Hogwarts
But Gambon put energy and life into this figure and portrayed him a bit more like a tragic figure, his masterpiece being the ending of Half-Blood Prince
Yeah, maybe, but in the books, Dumbledore remained the same character with the same characteristics , even if the plot got tougher. I would have loved to see Harris' interpretation of Dumbledore on HBP
I enjoyed both of them, didn't catch the 3 or 4 movies but I really miss Alan Rickman...who can forget that voice ...
Accurate
Exactly, it may be only my impression but Dumbledore started to have a bigger role from the third film until the HBP. I just can't see Harris portraying in these movies cause he was already pretty old and didn't have the energy required to be Dumbledore... just my opinion
yuppp definitely
Richard Harris had the character and cadence of Dumbledore's voice. He always sounds as if he came right off the page, as if JK Rowling had him in mind when writing the part. Additionally, no one, but he, can go from gentle, and soft, to SILENCE! with such unforgettable tenor.
finally someone recognizes the legendary skills of richard harris. too many people acting like they couldn’t see him doing the fight scenes…please.
i personally like both. they both seem so kind and wise. i don’t see a problem with either of them!! both did an amazing job playing dumbledore :)
Yes me too
Thanks for saying that Pear.
Gambon was a more aggressive and badass Dumbledore
yeah I agree
Ikr
Yes I agree, he was the better actor for an exciting movie. However, I think that very fact made Harris a better Dumbledore, but maybe a less exciting actor.
Ye but Harris could probably of killed him
Harris portrayed the dumbledore you would imagine in the books. Soft, quiet, calm and tender. In my honest opinion, he was a little slow moving to portray “one of the greatest wizards of all”
Richard Harris wouldn’t have been the same to watch in the battles, or physical scenes such as horcrux hunting.
They both mean a lot to me in the Harry Potter world, and they both had their own unique talents that made them both great in their own ways. If you could take the best from both actors and make one... oh lawd
Due to his performance in "The Half Blood Prince", I have to go with Gambon. You make a good case for Harris, but Gambon owned in HBP.
Constable 1976 exactly I loved Harris better but gambon in hbp was amazing
That was his redemption-movie, for sure. But imo he can't touch Harris.
Harris sounds more of an old person
@@aeuo1088 Maybe. But he just is way more accurate anyway.
@@Fnelrbnef So? Accuracy doesn't always mean better
His performances in Order, Half and both Deathly Hallows films were excellent.
i think his best performance was in half blood prince
Harris portrayed Dumbledore from the books very well but we can't deny, Gambon's Dumbledore portrayal in the movies got style ;) (I can't imagine Harris duelling Voldemort with the same intensity as Gambon in OOTP movie)

@@nightmare4568 k
Dumbledore in the books was always calm in every situation, he never raised his voice or panicked even when everything was seemingly going wrong, Harris portrays this perfectly however Gambon's version of the character is less reassuring.
I 100% prefer Richard Harris but it's not like Gambon is bad but Richard Harris just had the essence of the charachter more even for only 2 movies.
I really wished Richard had been here for the whole series as it would have been amazing to see his version get serious in OOTP :O
It has more to do with the direction than the actor itself, the director took some liberties in the later films.
i knoww!!!!!
Well he could habe copied the book's character instead...
Bur he didn't write it. He was playing a role written by someone else. There wasn't a need for him adding his personal touch.
@@AW-si9he Micheal Gabmon did not read the HP books before taking on the role. This is partly why he didn't play it well
@@catguy4996 even if he had not read the books, he had acted as instructed by the scripts and as directed by the directors.
Now two Dumbledores met in heaven
Richard Harris (1930-2002)
Michael Gambon (1940-2023)
But ofc if you seek in the movies a very faithful adaptation of the book I understand this scene in particular and the whole Gambon's performance was disturbing
u can be badass without showing your emotions tho..just saying..to me people that are calm and cool are badass
And in the duel of oop (5th movie)

I loved Richard Harris’ portrayal of the wise & powerful Dumbledore tempered by his gentleness & kindness!!
I definitely preferred Richard Harris over Michael Gambon. I thought that both did a good job, but Harris's portrayal of Dumbledore was how I envisioned the character from the books.
Same.
Harris Dumbledore looks like he would be the head of the orthodox church
Richard Harris forever! I remember a Gambon's interview where he stated that he had never read a single page of Rowling's books nor meant to do it later on. This is why he has literally nothing to do with the Dumbledore of the books. Harris, like Gambon, didn't like that role, nevertheless he read the books, that's why he is so close to Rowling's character. I can't help wondering how beautiful the following films would have been with Richard Harris.
Ik. I think he should read it bc he could be better Dumbledore
@@lydiasulovska I agree, and I find it very unprofessional not to read about your character. I think that should be the first step before starting filming; besides, all the other members of the cast learned how to play their role through the books.
Richard Harris did NOT read any Harry Potter book.
@@alix8647 i agree
Well, just my opinion....I think it's alright to not read the character you will be playing since the directors will be the one to manage each of every actor's role....just my opinion tho

I agree, but can you imagine him «white- faced and furious» As he is described in the books when he stuns Barty Crouch jr or when he enters the fight in the ministry of magic
Gambon was definetly my favorite Dumbledore!

Gambon for me, I liked my Dumbledore a bit more mobile, energetic. Harris was good too, but... Gambon all the way for me.
@@thesnackbandit well partially Gambon's fault as he refused to read the books and failed to get to know and understand Dumbledore.

Exactly, Harris was more light hearted and calm but gambon fits the dark persona well
But sadly no one understands that😒 that stupid director of goblet of fire 😡
Harris had that air of infinite wisdom about him and the discreet, twinkle in his eye, which is why I prefered him. Gambon brought the quirkiness of Dumbledore to life a bit better though and he definitely grew into the role towards the end.

And Harris lives in my heart and mind when I read the books as forever my Dumbledore!
nailed it! total legend, to even compare Harris to Gambon is honestly kind of insulting lol. not even a close contest
Just come here after hearing the death of Michael Gambon RIP
You're right, definitely a symptom of film making and not the actor per se. Gambon was great, but I definitely do still prefer Harris.
If Richard Harris had made it to the fourth movie I think the "Did you put your name in the Goblet of Fire?" Scene would have been a bit more book accurate.
Harris was the Perfect role to play as dumbledore❤️❤️
So yes, I prefer The original actor then the second actor!
Rest In Peace Richard Harris (1930-2002)/Michael Gambon (1940-2023)
Now both of them are unfortunately gone
That's probably because you havn't seen much of Harris movies besided HP.. . He was and is a more versatile actor than gambon.
I get it, I do. But he didn't put his name in the goblet. A bit of Snape's veritaserum would make that clear.
My biggest issue is that Gambon's Dumbledore stopped wearing his trademark half-moon glasses from order of the phoenix and forward.
Meh, I was expecting a thorough analysis, still, Harris is 1000 better than Gambon, the latter never demonstrated wisdom, calm and understanding like Harris did. When I read, I imagine him.
exactly, and Haris' voice was really calming. Too bad he passed away :(. RIP
@@rizkiwhizki absolutely, he really was Dumbledore, stupid death getting in the way :@
I always found Gabmon problematic as Dumbledore.
I totally agree with you. Harris will always be the real Dumbledore, the one that we read and breathe in the books.

Lol. These scenes were instructed by the Director, recorded in several takes and edited to suit the Director or Producer's satisfaction..The actor can actually do the scene "calmly" if instructed.
A lot of people didn’t even notice the actor change lol, I think as the movies got darker the character adapting with it made sense
I’m one of those lol
I really would have loved to see Richard Harris’s Dumbledore duel Voldemort.
Such a beautiful thumb nail, such wisdom. Lmao
I dont think the movies should be a copy paste of the books, Gambon is Iconic as all hell, extremely good acting.
When I firsted watched goblet of fire he was so mean to Harry I jumped when he shouted
I love Gambons look for Dumbledore but I love the way Harris carried the role much more
Meaning no disrespect to Harris, but I thought his Dumbledore was good at being calm but not calculating.
In the books its more like Harris's Dumbledor. "Did you throw your name in the Goblet of fire?" - Dumbledore asked CALMLY
Richard Harris is my favourite because he gave me a accurate impression of the character I love
