Hi John, I have a Gt2544 Cub lawn tractor. I have the spindles out for a bearing change. In the past, when i have changed tapered berings on trailer axles, I tighten the castle nut and then back it off a quarter of a turn. On the mower spindle, when I insert the bearing to the race and install the seal, the bearing can slide back and forth about 3/16 of an inch. Does that sound right? Thanks for your help.
Yes thats my question also. Tapered bearings have preload.
The preload is set by a spacer and a shims between the cones. The nuts are then tightened to their torque, which I do not know the value on off hand.
Many automotive applications you tighten to "zero clearance" then back off until the unit "spins free" and a cotter key or locking tab is applied. The bearings in this spindle are not set that way.
John, great video. I have one question; I have an older LT 1018 and I can't seem to be able to remove the bearing cups (races) from the spindle housing and I don't want to damage the inner housing. How did you remove yours?
I used the press in our garage/shop to both remove and install the bearings on this one. You can also use an air hammer or a punch and hammer with the spindle held in a vice. They can be tight and it's important to drive evenly to keep the races / cups straight in the bores.
Did you replace your race ?
Yes
Always best practice to replace cup and cones as pairs
Was the preload correct when U tightened both nuts?
On two of the three spindles for this deck we're good when tightened. The third needed a shim.
@@JB_Service_Co. Cup shim or spacer shim. Too tight or too lose? I have NEW hub when tightened blade bolt you could move blade was floppy. Spacer must be too long.

When the spindle bolt was tight the bearing was excessively tight, so the spacer needed lengthened. Therefore the shims were used. If yours is loose, you'll need to trim your spacer. It requires less than one may think to change the preload.
Which way do you install the black plastic/rubber bearing seal? It is hard to tell from the parts manual.
Install with the seal lip and spring to the inside. The "pressure" will help hold the seal against the shaft and keep the grease inside.
