AA Mini Maglite "Nitize" LED upgrade install and comparison

- I must have 1/2 a dozen of these old Maglight mini AA flash lights that I've acquired over the years. I figured I'd attempt to bring them up to 21st century specs. The results were OK. No major improvements, but for $6.99 Not a total waste of money.
l have one for over 20 years and still works and now l will make the upgrade thanks very much for this video you make really helpful

Thanks for the video, I was wracking my brain trying to work out why my upgrade kit wasn't working. Turns out i had lost the little tab. Luckily I had a knockoff maglite laying around and harvested the piece from that one.
I have had my maglite for about 25 years , so good to keep it going :)
Your video really helped me a lot. I had tried the conversion without any instructions and the LED wouldn’t illuminate. Your video mentioned the very small metal tab (and I could see its orientation on your video). I discovered that the tab had fallen out of the plastic holder when I disassembled the MagLite. Luckily I found the missing tab atop my kitchen counter. I strongly recommend to others to make sure you do the conversion over a work surface where you’ll be able to find the tab should it fall out like mine did.
After the conversion, I found that I like the color of the light beam. It offers better contrast. As far as brightness, it’s very similar to the cheapo blue, red or black Harbor Freight LED flashlights that the store gives away on promotions.
I will likely keep my other MagLite stock with the incandescent bulb.
What part falls out exactly? Is it a Nite Ize part? Can you somehow glue or fix it to prevent it falling out? This seems like a very, very poor design.
Thank you for the video! After having so many white LED lights I kinda miss the old school yellow light from bulbs. I picked up 2 mini maglites from a thrift store for $1 each, I think I'll keep them original
Great upgrades. I have one but it didn't come with the push button. I carry it on my belt with my leatherman. They are tough lights mines been dropped from 30 feet and survived and with the upgrade I noticed a lot longer battery life too. I don't know if you know this but you can completely unscrew the top and set the light upright in it and use it to light up a room like a candle.
I wish incadesent was still popular because I just like them for some reason.
Yeah I still carry a classic Mini Mag-lite in my pocket everyday. The yellow glow of a good incandescent flashlight is just comforting to me.

I like this option better then a 100 lumens, longer battery life and much brighter then original
I just converted my old Mini Mag to LED this morning, and added some Eneloop Pro batteries, to extend the life. I’m happy with the brighter bulb, my only complaint is that the push button readily accepts water, and you basically have to use it once you’ve converted to LED. If they add a sealed button I’d sure have considered paying a few more bucks for it
You don't need to use the push button bottom - I use the original one with the LED and it works great.

They really are a decent upgrade. They won't blind you, but they extend battery life a lot and put out a nice white light.
I upgraded my old army flashlight with the Maglite D cell LED, now it has 250 Lumen.

you can put it together,. just don't lose the thing comes out at the bottom, put it back like the little petal peace facing towards the batteries, put in two bats and then you can place back the thing says "DO NOT REMOVE"
The adjustable beem doesn't seem to work anymore, it will just turn off the light when you turn the top piece.

I got just the same Maglite as you got in this vid and rather modify and use the mag for another 30 years instead of replace it.
I like yours vid best sow far.
One thing people wrote about in some of the other commentsections is that det bulb cap is not screwed all the way on sow the Mag looses some of it's water tightness.
What is your experience on this ?
I'm about a year into this upgrade and I haven't had any issues with it so far.
I honestly do not know if I like the LED version or the conventional one. In relation to MAGLITE, what always enchanted me was a little of the charm they always had with the traditional lamp. LED ... yes. But only high power LED if possible. And this is not the case. I have 5 different MAGLITES and I like them all. But I never thought about switching to LED. Only if I see some LEDs that convince me seriously.
I did one of these upgrades to my old Maglite and the push button switch lasted a total of about 1 month before breaking other than that yes it's substantially brighter than the original but not even close to the Maglite LED version there's no comparison
My button is OK, but you are correct. I genuine LED mini-mag is brighter by a long shot. Still its a cheap upgrade to the older ones folks have floating around the house.

Can you tell us how you got into the package !!! you said its very hard to get into ,,, did you have to use a SAW or drilling equipment

30 lumens is good for as inspection light and everyday use.
Great upgrade! Is this Nite ize version works with AA size Ni-Mh rechargeable 1,2V battery or only works with ordinary 1,5V batteries? I'm thinking about a same upgrade, and I have a bunch of Ni-Mh's and wondering that will they works with the Nite ize LED or not. Thank You for your answer!
How does putting a LED bulb squeeze more life out of the torch !!!! confused if the old bulb is working why would putting a LED in squeeze more life out of it !!!!!!!!!!!!!
The battery does last a lot longer with the LED upgrade.

I've actually thrown one away because of that issue. it can be a real pain to get them out. You can try drilling into the old battery to get a good grip.
Wow you have one Mag lite in every room in the house your must have 10 then !!!! why dont you just have one in the kitchen draw like I do !!!!!!

Hate to throw out a functioning flashlight. My bulbs went out on my old minimag, and the new LED flashlights are so much better which makes it harder to throw money after old, not as good devices to keep them going. That old incandescent bulb sure is weak but there is something to be said about it being a warmer color. But investing in incandescent or LED and still only getting 30 lumens is lame. There appear to be problems with the Nitize conversion with regards to water tightness and the viability of the bulb making contacts and the conversion now costs over $11 on Amazon which make it less appealing. And a new mini maglite with 127 lumens in $27 which is a bit expensive. Maglite did a horrible job keeping up with the move to LED bulbs. Maybe time to go with a different brand.

Never never rely on a AAA or AA MAGLIGHT!
Relied on maglite 2aa for 15 yrs never had a problem just need to check the batteries condition now and then

Maglights are just terrible in general. The beam patterns led or not are just trash. The reflector and front lens are of course the culprit, 🙄🙄
